Hey good folks! I really hope you like this tutorial video where I go through how I crafted some pretty amazing looking fantasy style trees. I had a blast making this and I hope that comes through! Stay safe and lots of love! 💙💛💙🤘
From a model railroader the secret to seafoam trees (per the Supertrees instructions) is a dilute matte medium soak (7:1 water:MM). It lends them a lot of suppleness and also allows you to reshape them a little bit if needed.
What cute little trees! That's always the problem, with gaming trees; real trees are often around 100' (30.5m) tall. In D&D terms, that's 20" (51cm) tall. Whilst gaming, we'd not be able to see anything on the table. That said, yours are very majestic, and look rad as heck. Super nice
Yeah I agree, but that's usually the case, we often need to compromise between scale, functionality and visual aesthetic. Thanks for the nice comment! 👍
A good tip for making bendable vines for hanging from tree branches: coat lengths of cotton, jute, or butchers twine with brown silicone and then roll in loose coco coir til covered. Let dry completely and wear gloves bc its very messy! I think they make perfect wild grape vines. I've made many backgrounds for reptile tanks using this and they hold up very well
Awesome looking trees! I really like how relatively simple these are yet how good they look, most tree tutorials I’ve seen are really complicated..... great work Leif!
Nice of you to stay to the end man! Yeah It was kind of exciting! And I will be adding more to make it look proper forest-like! Thanks for the comment and the support! 🤘
I recently broke my arm so RUclips has been my best friend during the recovery. I can not wait to try creating some scatter terrain for my home games now that I've found such an amazing guide 😍
Thank you so much! Yeah it's a bit fragile for sure but if you find some more runny latex then I am fairly certain you could coat them to give them some flex! 😃 Sentiment regarding terrain...agreed! 🤣
I use green floral foam (not the wet stuff) and seal it with mod podge and sometime a spray. Ya they’re fragile but as you said,I ain’t letting people throw em around. People talk like their gamers are dipshits I’m sorry
Thank you so much 😀 Yeah trees can take a while but I am going to do some simpler ones also which still actually adds to my forest terrain! Thank you very much for the nice comment! 🤘
This is something I've been meaning to try and haven't yet, but watching the process as you go through it makes it seem really fun! Really awesome to see what they end up as.
Thank you very much! Yeah you can almost never go wrong with trees both in making them but also their use of the gaming table! Go for it I say and have fun! 👍
Ended up here from 52 Miniatures channel.. you have some of the best terrain tutorials and end results out of all the RUclips videos I've seen. These trees in particular are fantastic. Really enjoying your content
Welcome Kyle! Ah I assume it was one of Alex's collab videos or such? Thank you so much for saying so, that makes me very happy to hear! 👍😊 I plan on focusing a bit more on terrain going forwards! Thanks again for this super nice comment! 👍💙💛💙
Those were some kick-ass seafoam and coconut fiber trees, Leif! You have definitely perfected the art of talking to yourself! But that is a big part of the charm of Deva & Dice!
Awesome! Now these are the trees I've been looking for. Big and majestic. One thing, I saw another guy cut up a green scotch pad to use as a base for the leaves and he then covered it with the green turf. That would probably be sturdier and not as fragile as the seafoam trees. Might give it a try sometime. But great trees and great video!
That's good to hear Brian! Yeah I used some polyfiber from Woodland Scenics in my Birch tree and I have to say that I really like how durable those trees came out. I think I will revisit at least one or a few more tree builds in the future! Thanks for the nice comment! 👍😊
Haha! Sorry 100ID B! I can only devote so much time to the channel at the moment so my uploads might be a bit slower than ideal but I try! 🤣 Thank you so much for the nice comment! Happy you like the trees! 👍
@@DevsDice No problem Leif. Totally understand when life gets in the way of your hobbies! I really appreciate all the time and effort you put in to these. Best wishes from the US!
Gives me an idea to create one that has most of the trunk rooted down but then one portion opened like a magic portal to another side where your party can adventure and fight evil forces. Very nice!
Top notch trees! The foil layer is really smart, nice touch using that!! For a substitute instead of the sea foam trees. I have been using rope twine basicly making trees from that but of much smaller scale (mostly aspen type trees) but it may work in a pinch if your running low on those.
Cheers man! Yeah I will get more out as they are completed. Unfortunately I am unable to craft terrain in any other capacity than hobby! But perhaps one day! Who knows? 😊
Wow ! It's just amazing ! This tutorial is exactly what I was looking for, thank you very much 😄 Next step : adding some roots emerging from the ground (like small arches)... it would add another dimension to the gigantism of the trees 😄
I picked up a realistic tree kit years ago which contained the seafoam tree armatures and they suggested you soak them in matte medium to strengthen them. The kit was more for use on a model railroad terrain sets, but you could probably do the same thing for gaming terrain.
That's awesome! I will need to test that out as soon as I get some more seafoam trees! Also I think I want one of those boxes because mine came a bit flattened since they were in a A4-size plastic wrapping. Thanks for the tip John!!! 👍
They look absolutely fantastic, except for the fact that moss tends to grow on the north side of trees in the northern hemisphere. They like the dark humid environment of northern facing surfaces. 🤘

Awesome trees! I could definitely see them used in a diorama of Luke & Yoda on Dagobah, or Mirkwood Forest with dwarves on the ground and spiders in the trees.
Lovely. And very enjoyable video to watch. The end result looks a lot like an oak! I think some minor improvements could be to have one or two smaller dead parts of the tree (like a dead branch), since old oaks will often have those. And then it would also make sense to have an (or a couple of) old dead branch(es) that at some point came off be lying on the ground. Not that it has to be super realistic like that. But that is the image that comes to my mind when thinking about old oaks. In any case, very pretty trees.
Thank you so much Torvid! There are always improvements to be made and I really like the idea about dead branches! Will have to try to keep than in mind if I do new tree-videos! Thanks for the nice comment! 👍💙💛💙
Thank you Anecron1! I actually tend to agree a bit, I would have wanted the same area covered but exactly like you say it might be laid on too thick here and there. Good feedback! Will try to remember that if I do some more in the future! 👍
@@DevsDice I understand why you say the moss is a bit thick, but it looks very much like the trees where I live in the Pacific Northwest of the US, which are literally covered in moss :) Edit for clarity.

Yeah I suppose that could work as well. I guess it all depends on how much control one had of the dimensions. But for instance on the "off-shoot" branch, that kind of would give the modular branch a "lip" to slide into?
@@DevsDice okay so imagine that the off shoot branch has a male end... tooth pick that will slide into a small coffee straw... the main branch of the tree. Yeah thinking about making a video about some simple and more durable trees that can still add some flavor to my tabletop. Like I said in the video, these are delicate and yeah should be handled with some care. :)
Stunning! I was wondering if you had to recreate something similar but with a snowy theme, at what point would you add the snow flock? right at the end I assume?
Hey Grigør Pyrok! Yeah as a base I would add it to the end but that being said. It depends. If you are looking into making really frozen, then I would potentially let it influence me in the painting stages i.e. introduce some blues and colder colors. But as a base, yeah snow flock at the end. 👍
@@DevsDice alright thank you very much! One last thing, in your other video about forest scatter terrain you use about 12-14 inches long aluminum wires to then twist in half and start modeling the trees... how long are they in this one to make it in that big of a scale? I was about to start making some terrain for my wargaming group and I will for sure use this vid as inspiration
I think the largest one ended up being something like 14-16 inches. That being said, it depends entirely how you use the length i.e. how many twists and turns you do. Hope that gives you some sort of direction! 👍

So I used 3mm and 1mm aluminum wire. Very important that it's aluminum because I have tried working with steel wiring and it IS impossible, well isch. Hope that solves the issue, if not then ping me again and I shall see what I can do to help! 👍

Your Twin brother brings a lot to your intros, is Leaf going to be joining Leif more often?.
Ha-ha-ha... Damn you Nate 🤣😜
@@DevsDice Is this Leaf or Leif?
Hahaha! Leaf us alone! 🤣
What size wire? I bought what I thought you sad said and one wire is too thick almost to work with
So I used 3mm and 1mm aluminum wire. Very important that it's aluminum because I have tried working with steel wiring and it IS impossible, well isch. Hope that solves the issue, if not then ping me again and I shall see what I can do to help! 👍
PIZZAKARTONG!! Turf collector 2000! :D!
Hahaha! So true Ted! 😂
Cool...
Thanks Larry! 👍😊
What music do you use at the end of your vids?
It's great right? Niklas Johansson - Call of the North! 👍😉
@@DevsDice thank you mate, much appreciated, (love the content man!❤️)
I want to make some massive trees for my Wookie Wargaming Board does this still work well for much bigger scale? :D
I think so yes! That being said, the sea foam is fairly brittle! 👍😅
