When my son was in high school (years ago), his favourite subject was Philosophy and Culture. It opened his eyes to endless possibilities. The private school would invite influential public figures like the National Soccer Coach, Business tycoons to share their journeys, books they read etc. That changed my son’s outlook in life in so many ways. The access and exposure derived from great private schools is priceless.

A chartered school would be more like an equivalent of what we used to call Model C schools. At the beginning of our new regime, previously whites only schools which are still state funded were opened to all the other population groups. Since white people's education was always funded more than for other groups, their education was better than ours. So when things changed most Africans were able to take their children to those schools which are affordable than the private schools and they offer good education.

Great topic around private schools in South Africa. It's evident that the diverse landscape of education options plays a crucial role in meeting the varied needs of families, with private schools offering autonomy, specialized curricula, and often greater resources, while public schools remain a vital avenue for providing accessible education to a broader spectrum of students.

Religion is also out of our public schools, unfortunately. The contrast between Public and Private schooling in South Africa is astronomical. The only Public schools that are on par and sometimes better than Private Schools are the former "Whites Only" Afrikaans schools.
The rest of the public schooling will be a hit or miss for most. I went to a public school and the pattern is simple, if you're smart you'll always make it, if you're average to below average you may not make it...Where as in Private schools if you're average, they can push you hard to at least "Above Average" or at least just Average at worst.

There is not such a thing as a 'Whites only' public school in SA. There are a few Afrikaans single medium schools in SA and because there are more non White Afrikaans home language learners in SA than White Afrikaans learners, you will find that these schools are completely multi-racial. There are however a few Afrikaner private schools in SA, as there are Indian schools, Jewish schools and Muslim schools.

I think we need to be careful when we say something is affordable here in South Africa in comparison to the United States of America. You need to factor in the exchange rate. Because private school in South Africa is actually very expensive for South Africans, & not really affordable. This type of language makes it even more expensive & very exclusionary because Americans & Europeans who settle here accept these high prices, driving them even further up.

@@simangelelekhuleni6467 Which Eastern Cape? because I live there stop spreading lies. You think kids in 2023 will accept corporal punishment when there wasn't any by the time we finished Grade 12 in 2004. Rural Eastern Cape still has pit toilets and other infrastructure challenges but don't spread lies about corporal punishment. Kids have phones, don't be so ignorant and aloof, even in rural parts of the province kids have phones and South African kids don't shy away from knowing and telling you their rights and this generation in particular has no allegiance to the thinking of their parents when it comes to their rights. There is simply no need to lie to be part of a conversation. I have nothing to do with the education sector but casting aspersions on a sector that already has so much to deal with so that you appear like you know something is just an illustration of intellectual dwarfism. What I hate about lies is that they tend to catch fire and stick better than the truth.

we only been free for at least 20 years, the remnants and impact that apartheid had are still visible within our society. the wealth gap between black and white is worse as black people who are majority in the country still doesnt have economic freedom...its realy sad and disapointing that South Africans especialy those who where directly and ramnants of apartheid are still leaving with the pain and the loss......a 40 year old can still remember it like it was yesterday. its ohk when u dont share the pain but dont insult people cos its not like they are refusing but everyday scenarios keep on reminding them.....am the first in my family to go to university (am greatful). My parents could not cos the oppotunity was not there. and thats only on education. so please be respectful when talking about the struggle..we come far as a country and we are still trying.
