  • Welcome back to the Metal Detecting NYC channel. In this vlog series, join me on a metal treasure hunt in Prospect Park, Brooklyn. Many consider this to be the prime spot for metal detection in New York City. Fortunately, I struck gold and unearthed a plethora of coins, intriguing metal objects, and even stumbled upon something truly unusual towards the end of the video. I'll walk you through my metal hunting equipment, share the tools settings, and reveal the key indicators that led me to valuable finds buried beneath the ground. Don't forget to leave a comment below and subscribe to my channel.

Hi, my name is Merrill Kazanjian. New York City is an amazing place to go metal detecting. We have lots of parks, colonial history and great beaches for beach detecting. I have gone to all five boroughs of New York City To Metal Detect and beyond. I also currently own 22 metal detectors. I want to have the best and I want to help you choose the best as well. Hey Merrill, You might want to check if that 1914 wheat has a D mintmark. If it does, that's your find of the day!!! In the rough condition it still could be a $100 wheat cent! Your last item is a cane handle.

Plain and simple, we need a small coil for the D2. Even the 9" coil is too big for trashy city parks. Too many objects under the coil at one time, throws the VDI numbers off. I've been detecting "by ear" for years, I don't put much faith in VDI numbers. Recommendations, SLOW DOWN, overlap your coil sweeps at least 50%, and slow your walking pace once you hit a "hot spot". I've found more silver coins by going slow and listening for the week/deep signals (over 200 last year alone). Keep up the good work Merrill.

I've never had the remote on the shaft. Hunt by sound and only rarely look at I'd. No disc, no notch and I can call most targets. It might help that I played the trombone. 😁

After watching this, your idea might be workable with the X-Terra Pro I'm going to order in a couple weeks. Crank up the discrimination, and turn the iron volume to off.
I'm 62, and have been detecting off and on for close to 50 years. My old standby detector is Fisher 1260. I love that thing. It hits targets really deep.
My wife is wanting to learn. She has a Garrett Freedom Ace I found her in a pawn shop for $50 almost 14 years ago. We both think it's time to treat ourselves to a new detector, and have almost finalized our decision on the Minelab X-Terra Pro after watching many videos, and reading forums. The biggest reason for that choice is that they're waterproof for our trips to the beach, they seem pretty deep, and buying 2 of them will be very easy on the budget.
We've started watching your videos instead of regular tv shows during and after supper. Keep up the great tips videos!

I have the DEUS II, if you have an open area where you are looking for deep targets, I set mine with Descrim at 45 (nickels being 62) and sensitive at 99 or whatever is stable as high as possible… and hunt and listen for any positive sounding targets and check the numbers… DEUS II gives incredibly accurate numbers at depth, but all machines are fallible when targets are far away… then I dig almost anything that sounds good but you can barely pick up… you might be surprised 😯

Another great video Merrill, I too am just learning the Deus 2, at first I was a little frustrated with trying to understand it but after 2 months I have no regrets. Its an incredible machine that works like no other detector out there. The more you learn its language and harmonics the more successull you get. Most times via sound not target id it will tell me when there is an aluminum bottle cap versus a coin, you dont really need to look at the screen. My Legend has been gathering dust in the corner, so sad. Keep those vids coming and perhaps you could do one on determining iron, iron falsing and iron masking as there are some various tools at your disposal to remedy all these issues.

Merrill, you eluded to my technique at the end of the video. I set my disc. low and I set my 2nd tone vol. mid range so I barely hear it, then i set my nickel range high. Then my 4th tone is set just above my 2nd tone which allows me to decide whether or not to dig it. My 5th tone again is set high. This is like using audio discrimination! One last thing, i set my nickel range to (62) so the tone i hear for nickels only comes in at 62...this teaches my ears to the nickel sound and i can pick out a nickel at 61 or 63 also and very few pull tabs. Thanks for the video which helps us to find those deep signals!!!

Audio response feature has been around a while on high end detectors. On my old Whites XLT it was called modulation and was an on/off selection. I would turn it off on old non polluted sites where I was wanting to dig everything.

So instead of notching out so much which puts a lot of strain on the processing will limit your depth and also give you a lot of clipped signals you should set it to a three tone setting, set your first two-tone brakes to cover the range that you have notched out lower the volume and the tone pitch to where it's a low Mumble barely noticeable that way your processor can put full power into depth and processing targets vs. what you do or don't have notched. The processor of scrambling to quickly group those numbers into a range of either notched or unnotched and you'll notice by the audio that it is straining. The less you notch the better your processor will work. Used tone brakes and tone pitches to your advantage

That rounded "guilded" thing to me looks just like the screw on knob that sits atop my camping lanterns. It holds the top dome on top which in turn holds the globe on that protects the lite. The hole on the one end is threaded to screw on to the skinny screw that is threaded up through the light. Being that youre in the woods...if it is, my guess is someone had a llantern in there with them while fishing & the light went out so they took it apart to try to get it to run & lost the srew on part.

That's what I want to hear, the deeper the target, the fainter the sound. Now I wish I hadn't sold the Deus II, dammit!!

I’d love to do that trick with audio response but I have crippling tinnitus and if I don’t play it loud enough I’ll miss it

The y looks like a splitter for a hose and the first thing looks like a pin bottom comes off maybe?

Curious about something. Why not use full tones so you can tell the difference between a wheat penny and a silver dime?

Great tip on the audio response. I normally run mine at 3 but we’ll be playing with it after this . Keep digging

Two tones would be a smart choice for the low audio

I find 3 a good setting. Very good at being able to judge a deep vs shallow target with a three setting. I've also tried using 5, but will save it for an area where targets are sparse. It not only amplifies the deep targets, but also the junk.

is it better to notch them out, or just mute the numbers you don't want?

Try the Double Score , don't have to configure so much crap...it's a killer ,not sure how they set it up, but it's great, separates like a beast,
