Thanks for the very informative and well done tutorial! It made doing this repair pretty straight forward. My '01 only has 52,750 miles so I guess it "aged out". I had 18-20 gal still in the tank, so we didn't drain the tank and used two large floor jacks to support and lower it. The hardest part of the job was getting the filler neck and vent tube hoses off the filler neck tubes. We lubed all the hoses and hose barbs with ATF and it all went back together very smooth. My (salt free) truck is truly clean and rust free, so I'm sure we had an easier go of it. The details you provided made the difference, thanks again!

Great video! I did mine about 5 months ago. 162,000 miles, 2001 4.6L. Just to add to this while the tank is out. I also, did replace all the hoses as well, as they were all pretty crusty.

Did this job on my 02 f150 yesterday. your idea of using tie down straps made the job much easier! I used my dirt bike style cinch type straps (not ratcheting style) to lower and raise and it really helped since the tank was 3/4 full. replaced pump motor with Bosch 69128 for $90.

My only comment: Has anyone noticed in this video (as well as others) that the circular plate at the top of the pump that sits on top of the tank was rust-proof stainless steel on the old original pump. Now the replacement pumps use just a yellow zinc coating which will likely rust badly probably to the point of failing especially for those in the salt belt......another example of how difficult it's become to find quality replacement parts.
I did notice that also. Parts get cheaper made but continue to cost more.
This is the best video I’ve seen. Very concise, and nice and slow for easy comprehension. Very good points to clean everything up before total disassembly. I would recommend replacing all hoses while you have the tank down too. Ratcheting straps were a nice idea. The jack stands seemed to be in the way. Over all it is a very well done video. Gasoline actually floats on water, it is lighter in weight than water by almost 2 pounds/gallon. Nice details to safety also. Gasoline volume to volume is said to be 10 times more explosive than TNT. Of course, in liquid form, it is at its safest phase. Good job man!

Your video helped me out today on my 2001 SuperCrew. Previous owner had changed everything under the sun at their Ford dealer attempting to solve a randomly occurring no-start issue (Who knows how much money they threw down the drain...) Everything that is, except for the fuel pump/sender... which I got to discover. Luckily my pump was intermittent, so I had the luxury of getting it down under 1/4 tank before committing to drop the tank. Overall the job only took me about 4 hours of total wrench time; had to take a break in the middle of the job because O'Reilly pulled the extended cab version of the pump (too tall for a crew cab tank) and I had to go exchange it. For anyone watching this in the future:
The pressure and return lines are 3/8" and 5/16" if you're in need of fuel line disconnect tools and don't know what size to get. I recommend just getting a good set of the angled plastic versions in a multi-pack. If you're watching this video, you're also mechanically inclined enough to find use for them in the future.

@@InsaneOil You're welcome. Update: I did not have to change the pump. It was moisture/ice in fuel rails. Would not send voltage to pump. Cleared out, starts everytime. But still, I'll remember!

Excellent video with super clear narrative. I envy your lack of rust. My pump is ok (probably not the original), but my tank has a pinhole leak at the seam. I can't put more that a 1/4 in it without smelling vapors and seeing the wetness on the tank. No drips ... yet. Not environmentally responsible to continue to use it this way. Again, I appreciate the quality of your video. It has increased my confidence that I will not be in over my head.

Just FYI extended cab trucks and single cab trucks can be done taking off bed. Crew cab truck your going to have to drop tank because fuel pump is under cab. Just found out the hard way.
Same homie, literally just spent 3 hours battling bed bolts. Got it off and said I'm going in the h Ouse and drinking beer. I'll drop the tank tomorrow. I was to pissed to even give a fuck lol
I heard you can at least access some of the hoses from the top which makes it easier than the bottom. What was your experience?
if you have a four door, you cannot access the fuel pump buy removing the bed. it is under the cab. On my extended cab f 150 it is under the bed.

Also if you can cut hole through bed of truck directly over pump then you don't have to remove tank ,can't do it on a crew cab cause fuel pump is under back seat.

Only 115k? lol Mines got 286k and I doubt the tank has ever been removed mind you my truck sat in a rock quarry most of its life in South Dakota so imagine what I am gonna see in the tank when I pull it down. I know the filter was clogged with dirt. Anyway very informative love how you went above and beyond for the video unlike other guys who show only half the work and say is a tutorial.

I bought the one that O'Reilly Auto Parts had in stock. I did minimal research into the various brands.

I heard you can you loosen the tank straps and lower just the front of the tank and you can remove the fuel pump unit without removing the entire tank? Not positive though! I will probably remove my bed to access the pump...just seems easier as I have no bed liner!

I have not heard of the "loosen the straps" method but it could be possible that it would work. FYI on the "bed removal" method...if you have a crew cab (as shown in the video), the "bed removal" method does not work because it does not give you enough access to the tank, since the fuel pump actually sits underneath the back seat.

I see in video you had a hard time getting one of the fuel lines off. would be nice if you showed how you got that one off as I am having same problem. I even squirted PB blaster on it and am using the special tool. please advise?
I recall that it took a long time and I kept messing with it trying different fuel line disconnect tool sizes. Eventually it went. I cut out a bunch of video footage of me just messing with it.
It is so much easier to access the gas tank by removing the truck bed. It is held on by either six or eight bolts depending on model. With the bed removed you have full and easy access to all the tank connections including the sending unit, hoses, vents and sensors. Plus you can stay off the floor. I just completed a gas tank change myself and the bed removal method is the way to go.
Agreed. The bed removal process is typically a little easier, however, with the Crew Cab on this model the bed removal process doesn't actually give you access to the fuel pump.

Hello, What a great video. So my vehicle is the same as this one, with 125 K on it. However my problem is that the gas gauge indicator needle (on the dash) seems to only go up to half now, although it will go down as the fuel level drops. It looks like you replaced all of the float with the fuel pump. Do you think this would work for fixing my problem. Seems like the same procedure.
I would say it would. It is still a gamble because we are technically throwing a new sending unit at it rather than checking the wires and cluster to make sure it is not that, but most likely the float is the problem. So if you replace the sending unit, then yes, that should fix the float problem. I replaced mine on my ranger and it is a good approximation now, but I notice that for a 20 gallon tank, I am still a little above half a tank when I should have consumed 12 gallons. So I still don't trust the float to give the indicator gauge the accurate amount of fuel remaining, but it is a good approximation. I am just saying fixing it may still give you a problem because sometimes they can get hung up when you install them.

I revisited you video, and found out that the problem was my cluster. I literally have to tap my clusters window, and the gauge goes back to reading correctly. Obviously it's a solder joint issue. Thanks again.

What are the symptoms? or why do you think it is the fuel pump?
@@InsaneOil.....it idles when I drive it. It'll go go go, then all of a sudden it will start to die out then kick back again and start moving, but it repeats that process. So I stopped driving it, and gonna buy parts to eventually fix it. It May be a sensor? Or the fuel pump module(I'm hoping), because that thing looks rough under the truck.
And this beeping sound kept coming on.
@@ThePreachingOfHisWord Might be worth having a reputable mechanic take it for a drive and give you an assessment. Could be as simple as the fuel filter getting clogged.

I was told I had a bad one way valve on my fuel pump... so my fuel lines are not staying pressured and are bleeding back to my tank. do I need to replace the whole fuel pump or is there just a certain part I have to replace?
When my friend and I did this about 9 years ago on my 2001, we also replaced all the fuel hoses, even along the frame, because they were just disintegrating in our hands.
I agree with your methods. It probably would have been better if I switched out all the lines also.
you can just tilt the bed over on the right side loosen all the bed mounting bolts and take the left bolts out then remove the fuel neck screws and just jack the bed up on the left side. It is the easiest way! there are 6 bed mounting bolts you only need to remove 3 on the left side.

Hi: When you installed the tank straps, does the strap flange at the bolt bottom out against the frame. I ask because I'm using aftermarket straps that upon final tightening with the tank firmly against the frame, the strap flange is about 3/4" shy of the frame. I was wondering if the OEM straps did the same thing?
Are you referring to 4:01 in the video where the strap is touching the frame?
No. 4:01 shows the skid plate bolts. I was referring to 20:00. I just acquired an F150 like yours. The tank has a slow leak because the straps had badly corroded/disintegrated and the tank was resting on the skid plate (previous owner ignored recall notice on straps). I bought a new Dorman tank and two fuel tank straps but the strap bolts cannot be tightened to the point that they touch the frame. There ends up being a 3/4" gap between the strap flange and frame. I checked other brands and they spec the same dimensions. In your video starting at 20:00, I see a gap and was wondering if you had the same problem?

BTW, judging by the snow, you must see a lot of road salt. What's your secret to controlling rust? your skid plate, tank and straps look original and in great shape. Thanks again for the photos!
@@johnd.5480 I have several secrets. 1. I spray the underside of my vehicle every time I wash it. 2. I typically park in a garage which minimizes the exposure to weather. and 3. I have the exact same truck. You cannot replace the fuel pump by removing the bed. The fuel pump lies on top of the tank below the back seat of the cab. I know this because I just took the bed off my truck 2 days ago and the fuel pump is not exposed.
Correct. The limitation with the crew cab body style is that the fuel pump sits under the cab. The fuel pump is accessible under the bed on other body styles of the same year.
Good video. Only thing I’ve noticed is you cannot change the pump with the bed off on the crew cabs. The fuel pump sits under the cab and there is not enough room to pull it out unless you drop the tank. Still a great video
Agreed. The bed-off method is not suitable for this particular body style.
Ya lots of fun . This is a job that takes some time . Can be frustrating getting the lines off (Fuel) Use ratchet straps (will be safer when lowering ) Make sure you have more than 1 set of release tools. I had to replace my tank as 1 of my tank straps broke free from the truck frame mount and tore the filler tube out of the tank. My fuel pump was still good (I replaced it along with all the hoses so I put all new) If your replacing your tank make sure you put new tank to frame cushion material on the tank ( I used Blue Skin used in the building industry ) 1 day to remove 1 day to reinstall everything don't rush it take your time.

It's much better for the fuel pump if the key is turned to "on" and you hear a hum sound.
I just followed the repair specifications.
you cannot remove the bed on a SuperCrew and expect to reach the fuel pump as the fuel tank on a SuperCrew is partly underneath the cab due to the cab being longer than a standard cab. If you remove the bed you're going to figure out that you still cannot reach the fuel pump. You still have to take the fuel tank down.
Agreed. Although bed removal does work with many pickups, this specific model of F150 is not a good candidate for that process.
How the heck did you get the fuel filler tube out of the gas cap area so easy?!? Yes, I removed the bolts. Just not enough play to get it out of that neck.
I don't remember off of the top of my head, but if you are struggling I assume there may have been some behind the scenes off camera troubles on my end.

where is the fuel filter on the 2013 f150 xlt? Is it in the fuel pump and how do I know if the fuel pump is in the fuel tank? Cant find the filter next to the frame.
Sheri Culkin According to what I have read, the fuel pump is part of the fuel pump assembly inside the tank. Not a serviceable part unless you are replacing the entire pump assembly.

I would safely assume that this would work on a f 250 2005 as well,yes? My fuel pump works ok but sending unit not jiving on gauge. and i have prob's fueling as well .Save me some head aches

I removed the filler neck, but when I try to get a line in there to syphon, I am having trouble hitting any fuel?
I'm just trying to drain the tank. Any ideas? Thank you!
Drop the tank with the current fuel level. It is near impossible to do any decent type of job syphoning it out because of all the junk inside the tank that keeps the fuel from sloshing around. Just know that it is heavy. Use straps to help support it.
Going through the fuel door won't work because there's an anti-siphon cage at the end of the main full pipe.
I was able to siphon all but about a half gallon by disconnecting the smaller 3/4" vent hose at the tank (the smaller hose coming off the filler pipe).
Also, the Ford manual says to remove the rear vent valve (push down and turn CCW). I was unable to turn mine because of rust build up; but once I got the tank on the floor, I was able to clean out 're rust under the flange and remove and reuse it.

Eldrich Pangan I dont think so.. I just took my bed off and the pump itself (on the 4 full sized doors model XLT FX4 CREW CAB 2002) sits right below the driver side rear passenger side..
Looks like a lot of work.
