Really honest and fair review. Your point on Cynthis not being wicked enough- her being wicked is actually from the perspective of the political spinning and manipulation by the Wizard. Hopefully when you see the second part, it will all click into place. Thanks for a great review though! Interesting to hear from someone not into broadway etc
Well no there was a key line/scene from the original play that was missing. The scene was a class on witches through history what makes a good witch and a bad witch. Bad witches wear hats, are scary and they fly on brooms, good use wands, are friendly and use bubbles/transport This scene would have really helped define how groundbreaking Defying Gravity is.
always good to hear when people who claim not to be in a movie's demographic are able to enjoy and appreciate the film for what it is. i think opinions like yours are more valuable compared to people who are biased for or against it. thanks for sharing your thoughts! as for not buying that elphaba will one day be an evil witch: the story of wicked obviously differs from the wizard of oz in many ways, and one of them is how the witch is perceived by the citizens of oz vs. what she actually does, and since wicked is elphaba's pov we get to see how she gets her reputation as the wicked witch and decide for ourselves whether or not her actions/intentions make her "evil." the witch in the original wizard of oz was pretty much just there to be mean for the sake of it
Don’t worry about it ruining The Wizard of Oz. It is not based on it and is only very loosely based on the characters and connections. Just like the book Wicked, The Life & Times of The Wicked Witch of the West is very loosely based on the broadway show and this movie. That book I mentioned is extremely dark, graphic and violent, completely different than this movie/broadway play.
What a great review. Your honestly and personality is perfectly suited for this field. Awesome to find your channel! Looking forward to checking out more of your reviews...
Interesting hearing a review from someone who doesn’t know the musical and what happens. If you can’t see her playing a witch in the second movie you will be surprised as to why you can’t see her as that. I’d be interested on a reply after you see it. Glad you enjoyed the movie. I’m so used to reading things online that are negative that I’m rereading what I wrote and it’s not supposed to be negative, but it sounds negative to me, and I know it isn’t. Lol.
Good to see you enjoyed it. This movie is for musical theater lovers, but it's so good to see people who have never heard or seen the original play enjoying it too!
Wicked part 2 is going to enable people to see how amazing the story is. Part one has been fantastic. I’ve seen the musical so many times on the stage. I’ve seen the film three times now and I’m so glad I have. I keep listening to the soundtrack. I am a wicked mad. I’m 61 years old and I’m not ashamed to say it. The girls did amazing absolutely amazing. I’m so proud of them and they should be proud of them themselves too. The music was fantastic. I just knew Stephen Schwartz was not going to let his amazing musical be ruined.
The whole point of Wicked is that the original Wizard of Oz painted the wrong picture of The Wicked Witch of the West. Think of the original movie as one person's distorted interpretation of events. Wicked offers a different interpretation.
There is still gonna be part 2 which will REALLY showcase how she becomes fully bitter and wicked. Part 1 was mainly just backstory and how she got branded as the wicked witch
What can one say about the direction of today's film industry when the top three money-making films are sequels and prequels??? it doesn't look good to me.
In the second part, it is DARK! Like she fully becomes evil in part 2. My favorite song in the whole musical is in part 2 and it’s where she becomes wicked and it’s such an amazing powerhouse of a somg
Ohhhh interesting, actually i have a system I use off camera to get me to these numbers. Maybe I should do video on it. This was for Wicked. Wicked Story 5/10 Acting 8/10 Cinematography 8/10 Writing / dialogue 6/10 Editing 7/10 Sound design / music 8/10 Ending 6/10 Effectiveness 7/10 True to its genre ( horror, comedy, etc. ) 9/10 Rewatch ability 6/10 Bonus: +2 for terrific signing Total: 72/100
So, I get where you are coming from with Elphaba, but she actually isnt supposed to be a witch the way the Wizard of Oz portrays her. The point of the Wicked show is that the people dont like her because she is different or "othered" and the people need an enemy. The book is political and so it mirrors the themes of are people born wicked or do they have wickedness thrust upon them? The show has a lot to do with odds stacked against someone who is different until she's is kind of like, fine if they want different, then that's what they get.
I think the whole idea is ridiculous. Makes no sense. Why does Hollywood put these idiotic spins on the classics. This movie resonates with the college educated and Ariana Grande people. The character of the wicked witch is lost. Don’t get it. Everything in this movie is all computerized graphics. Not real. It is a liberal spin on the beloved Wizard of Oz. Leave the Wizard of Oz alone let it be. Hollywood make your original musicals like they did in that era. Your smart!!!!!!! Try it.
@ It’s the authors spin on the Wizard of Oz a beloved movie which is the story of Dorothy passed out during the storm and dreamt the whole thing and along comes this guy with a book trying to get in the psyche of two fictional characters and sell it to the liberals and turn into a war on diversity etc etc. Leave the Wizard of Oz alone. Make up your own fictional stores.

I appreciate that 😀
I love grandae

Thank you for keeping an open mind and letting the film speak for itself.

It was very good 🤓
A witch is suppose to be mean for the sake of it. Witches are evil.
she's not supposed to be nasty in the future, the story is about how ordinary, good characters are villainised -- it's ironic

The Broadway show is based on the book, not the other way around.

This is more of a retelling than a prequel - Dorothy arrives in Part 2 which gets pretty - dark.
Heck yes.

This movie was almost ALL practical sets, which is incredibly impressive and made it 100x better.

If you haven't seen John Chu's in the Heights I highly recommend it, he is very good at filming musicals.
Yes i have heard great things!
There is still gonna be part 2 which will REALLY showcase how she becomes fully bitter and wicked. Part 1 was mainly just backstory and how she got branded as the wicked witch
I'm very excited about it.
I'm glad you warmed up to it. 🙂 I think you're gonna appreciate WICKED: PART TWO (2025), as well.
The play is fantastic. Give it a try.
2:27 Small spoiler here - that's the whole idea. A big part of the plot, Elphaba is a sorry excuse for a witch, that's what makes her a tragic figure.
What can one say about the direction of today's film industry when the top three money-making films are sequels and prequels??? it doesn't look good to me.
Just saw it.
Loved it.

No Good Deed
@ YES
I'm PUMPED
I was worried it would ruin the wizard of oz for me but now I am so excited
I very much enjoyed it!
2.40hours? Nope.
I found it was a great film if you take a nap in the middle, worked out perfect.
It doesn't feel like 2hrs tho,it's so goood
Good review! But, how did you come up with 72? Not 71. Not 73. 72. 😅 I would have watched another 5 minutes to see just how you broke it down.
Ohhhh interesting, actually i have a system I use off camera to get me to these numbers. Maybe I should do video on it. This was for Wicked.

Well it’s a broadway and a book before that. Not Hollywood’s spin

What did I Ariana do to you ?
Honestly nothing, just being a hater lol
@@TheMovieDive😂
Ariana Grande the Queen of Pop.
2.5 hours to get to Defying Gravity? Nah.
Its rubbish, they paid you to say this, how much.
Bator
Time for the musical to disappear again.
...are you ok?
I have seen. It’s awful
