I’m a huge fan of the musical, I’ve seen it 6 times in the Westend. This film has been a lonnngggg time coming so I’m extremely excited to see this tomorrow morning 💚
I haven’t seen the stage show. Is the movie choreography similar to the stage choreography? It seemed very hip hop inspired for the ensemble numbers. It felt a little off or forced to me for a Stephen Schwartz musical.
I haven’t felt this way about a movie in years - it absolutely blew my mind. It’s incredible how much they brought this story to life - it exceeded all my expectations. I want to see it a couple more times before it’s out of the theater because it really does feel like you are transported to this new world - it’s that kind of movie!
I really feel like most of the complaints about this film fall into one of three types - 1) People who knew nothing about it going in and just don't understand it or dislike it because this ain't their genre 2) People who didn't even watch it but just want to hate on it anyway, so they are repeating the negative things they've read online somewhere as a form of trolling or 3) Desperately nitpicking it apart because they trashed it ahead of release - and now they don't want to admit they were wrong.
I've been cautiously optimistic about this film since the beginning, but seeing that film critics and diehard fans are both raving about this makes me so hyped!!!! I seriously can't wait to see this over the weekend 💚💝
I watched in last night IMAX Sydey! No seats vacant! As someone who is a fan of the musical theatre and the books, the movie is incredible. I was glad it was divided in 2 parts. Sooooo many storylines added that are not in the musical
I think there’s an equally plausible interpretation that the storylines aren’t so much new as they are further developed than the stage version. But I think part 2 may add subplot, but that’s just my guess …
Love it so much more after second viewing!! Ariana sold it as Galinda/Glinda stealing every scene she’s in! Cynthia Arivo brought depth and her performance amazing!! Deserves all the praise!!
The train is NOT cgi, they actually built that along with most of the set. If you google it there’s bts clips showing the train on set. The director said it weighed 16 tons, It was even brought to Paris during the Olympics as part of the promo for the movie.
Love it!! Was surprised how much I enjoyed Ariana Grande’s performance and ate her scenes! Cynthia Erivo amazing as as Elphaba and that showstopper Defying Gravity did not disappoint! Can’t wait for part 2!!
Saw the play about 25-20 years ago. Didn’t remember much about it . This movie is epic in every way. It’s funny to see online reviewers get all upset about a movie they were not going to see anyways😂😂😂
At my screening, the audience cheered and clapped after each musical number. I loved it and so did most of the audience. On the way out, I heard a few men grumbling that they didn’t know that there would be singing. Some people didn’t know that this was based on a musical. And then a few people were upset that this was Part One. They were mad when they saw “To Be Continued…”
If I got a nickel every time I heard a guy say "I wasn't excited to see it but Wicked surprised me," I'd have at least two dollars. 😄 Glad you enjoyed this! I am so curious if you caught on to some foreshadowing involving certain characters. The book is super dark and not for everyone (drugs and sex are involved). The musical really turned the story to suite mainstream.
As a newbie, I was surprised and happy with the music and the themes introduced, and really look forward to seeing Part 2 to see how dark this thing can get.
Saw it with my partner and our eldest daughter. I was a huge fan of the book but havent managed yet to see the stage play . I tried to walk away maturely but to be honest, I didn’t really understand you. You say “it’s not that Cynthia doesn’t deserve it“ but then you go on and on and on about Ariana deserving it. Why don’t both ladies get the emphasis for a deserving an Oscar? Why are you more impressed by Ariana exactly and what did she have that Cynthia didn’t in her role?
I was only a second-hand fan, but was extremely impressed. Both of the leads were great. As to the side plot, apparently the later books by Baum went a lot darker and more political. Then that got worked into Maguire's re-contextualization of the Witch of the West which is likewise a lot darker than the play or movie. I felt like there was a good balance.
Well, shoot, I already read the book a few months back and seen the movie last night as it's as close to experiencing the musical itself. 😅 But to be fair, I'll bee seeing this once in a while even the day before Part 2.
@@AustinBurke The book is not bad it is very different. It has themes of oppressive governments, infidelity, forbidden romance and dealing with consequences of actions. The stage musical and the movie take aspects or concepts of book but does not follow the story in the book. It was a wise decision for longevity and profitability pf the stage show to change the book story and have the musical be more in line with the 1939 musical everyone knows.
Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande aced their performances as Elphie and Glinda, the score and songs are phenomenal, and the Emerald City has never looked better than it does here. Defying Gravity was and is already a great number as the Act I finale to the beloved broadway musical (seen last 2017), but it took on a whole new level in this film. Director John Chu has remained faithful to the Broadway musical while adding new dimensions and depth, at least emotionally if not narratively, to the characters and their stories. Love it. 🥰
Never been a fan of the Wicked stage show. Since its release, I’ve always thought the score, with the exception of a couple of numbers, to be second rate Schwartz. After spending a fortune to take my family to see it here in the real Oz, I thought the stage show was vacuous and bloated. When they announced that the film was coming, the world could hear my eyes rolling. But then they announced the cast and I had to have strong words with myself. As a massive Cynthia Erivo fan and with Jonathan Bailey being in the elite group of my fantasy husbands, I thought I’d wait it out before judging. The trailers actually started making me excited. So yesterday the day came. I sprayed myself with my Calvin Klein’s “Defy” (see what I did there?) in honour of the occasion and trotted off to the cinema like any self-respecting late middle aged single gay tragic theatre male. Well, I ADORED it. Yes, I still find some of the music bleh (technical term) but others I now appreciate. The production and costume design were mind blowing, cinematography stunning and overall direction done with such love and care to both the stage version and the original Wizard of Oz (something I don’t think the stage production does as well). The entire cast is wonderful. Jonathan can do no wrong and Ariana is hilarious. But Cynthia is a goddess. The tiniest of gestures conveys so much. Her depth of spirit is truly astonishing. She is the beating heart of this film. I cannot wait to see it again and I'm glad you are now a fan, Austin. Love it when it wins over the straight boys.
I really liked it but I don't think it's some incredible movie. Feels like they introduced a lot of stuff int he first half that they don't come back to until way later.
@@isaac.edwards If I AM seething, it's over what has happened to our white women. Yes, the reason why there’s a lot of world building is because they tried to include things from the book, called wicked, and from the musical, the musical the pretty long musical is well. They had to make room for a lot of the story. Plus, they wanted the first part to end with defying gravity because that’s where the musicals first intermission is. Also, I don’t think you seem to understand the metaphor about the animals they were treating the animals like they were slaves and that’s what the Wizard of Oz one of the animals to be.
I really hope that Ariana and Cynthia each win an oscar for their performances (one in 2025 and one in 2026) essentially for each movie because I haven't even watched the movie yet but they both clearly deserve it.
Word is the studio will submit Cynthia as lead actress and Ariana as supporting hoping that 1) they won't cancel each other out and 2) that both of them can win in their categories.
Right wing YT creators had been trashing this unreleased movie for months now. If this movie happens to be good (I still have my doubts), these people would act like nothing happened and move to the next thing to pre-hate.
Austin, I don’t think you should have fleshed out the Wizard’s character, followed with, “it’s ok, it’s not a spoiler. Everyone knows the story.” NO! Everyone doesn’t! There’s 1 or 2 generations of Americans and lots of people overseas who know nothing of the story, and you spoiled that facet of the movie for them.
The story's over 100 years old -- how long must one wait before talking about it publicly isn't a spoiler? Flipside: this is an imagined prequel to the original books -- shouldn't it be on audiences to know the source material or at least be aware that there may be references to the original source material in any derivative?
It seems This Jon chu dude is real deal, crazy rich Asian was more hype than substance but I am hearing all good things about wicked let see how good it is
The book is a... choice. It's much harder hitting on social commentary on class and exploitation and power and dictatorship, and also is very much a soap opera, the origins of Elphaba from the beginning of the movie is probably the only part of that that's left of the book, but in the book it's stuff like that many times over. Thing is, it's written pretty poorly. I skimmed through the most of the book after reading about a third and waiting to be sucked in - I give books a chance because some of them have some time going, or are not my cup of tea and I need to do a job on be on the same wave. But this one is bad, I think that Steven Schwartz and Winnie Holzman did a wonderful job extracting the core of what's interesting there, even though I've always wanted the musical to be more hard hitting on social stuff like class and xenophobia. Seems like the movie does more with this, so I'm glad
This is exactly how I feel about this book and the musical. Wicked was the book that helped me realize that no, I really don't have to finish every book I begin reading.
They said this is a faithful adaptation. I dont see it yet reaching a billion dollars but Universal is going to be fine. As for awards, thank goodness Avenue Q didnt have a movie adaptation. Just kidding!

Oh I get it, all of us should try to understand the much “ understood” wicked witch of the west because after all , she was about to kill 4 people where each victim gets to watch her murder each one in front of the other with Dorothy dying last having to endure watching the witch kill her three friends who were trying to help her. After all that’s what you do when the wizard asked Dorothy to bring him her broom so she could go home. If the wizard was a true wizard he wouldn’t need the broom. Then we find out Dorothy had the power to go home all along with the ruby slippers. The slippers Witch of the west craved for their power. The slippers were put on Dorothy’s feet so witch of the west wouldn’t gain the power of the slippers to do evil things with its power. Dorothy never asks for the slippers. Wicked has that hollyweird slant that the perpetrators need to understand the murderous intent of the witch. They didn’t like the witch because she had a green face or was black. It was her deeds that made her wicked. Big plot hole here. Wicked was performed well but the story is BS. That’s why I can’t like this film. If it doesn’t ring true I don’t like it.
Please...movies like this exist for one reason....for white women to attend so that they can feel hip and enlightened...it takes a really open-minded person to overlook the fact that you're paying for the privilege of looking at one of the planet's ugliest human beings....I really do believe that liberal white women are the source of just about EVERYTHING that is wrong in the West...
It will go over this in the next movie. The Wicked story shows that how the original Wizard of Oz played out is deceptive. Everyone in Oz only hated the witch because they were fed lies and they believed them. At some point, the wicked witch decided she would have to play along with the narrative that was being told about her, but it was never about trying to kill 4 people. It’s much more nuanced than that in the Broadway musical. Also, the deal with the slippers is not about wanting the power. There is a much more personal connection to the slippers if you pay close attention to the first movie.

But I also respect everyone else is loving this and getting something out of it, like the musical fans
Are you serious?? Btw, every character in this has been played by people of varying races on Broadway. Also, Elphaba is literally a metaphor for discrimination (as well as the entire subplot of talking animals being discriminated against). Maybe wicked is not the story for you lol

Anyways. Have a good one. I don't mean to come off hostile. Its best to quit while I'm behind.
Us who have seen the Broadway musical looking down on you newbies like: “Pathetic” 😂😂😂
Hey now. I’m just a busy guy with a busy life haha. I didn’t avoid it for the sake of avoiding it! Lol
@ your “busy” life does not concern the great and powerful OZ. Your disrespect is a major transgression. Pray he does not smite you
@@AustinBurke tell it to the Wizard you criminal!! Pray he doesn’t smite you for your transgressions
@@AustinBurke you will have to explain that to the great and powerful Oz.
My housemate and I went to see Wicked yesterday and it was amazing! After the movie he said Cynthia was great but Ariana CARRIED the movie
another closeted gay guy coming out
Better not tell your mom, she’ll be upset.
The train was not CGI. 16 ton train built for the movie.
Go listen to what I said again
I didn’t say that
The Wizard of Oz is amazing. Watch that over and over instead.
Nah done that already, this is my new obsession
This sounds so unimaginative.
I saw this evening. It was absolute shit. I got my money back.

I guess we officially found the most overrated movie of the year. Last year it was Barbie, now this year it’s Wicked Part One.
I never like using the word overrated, but I sort of agree with Barbie as I wasn’t huge on it myself. I respect that everyone else got something out of it tho. I’m not excited for Wicked myself but I already know how I feel about the musical, and that’s that I’m not big on it. So maybe I’ll end up agreeing with you there too. But gonna have to wait and see. But I also respect everyone else is loving this and getting something out of it, like the musical fans
Wicked is amazing, I didn’t love Barbie either but wicked appeals to a lot more people I think
You people are so miserable
2 very different movies. Wicked has much more universal appeal than Barbie.
Have you watch this movie ? Dummy
I don't get this movie it's nothing like the wizard of oz it's like watching The way life is in LA Hollywood I don't like it
DEI casting? No thanks.
DEI? Didn't know that mattered when casting green people and goats.
Oh no! The fantasy land of “Oz” where there are flying monkeys and talking goats doesn’t have an all white cast. Whatever will I do!
Are you serious?? Btw, every character in this has been played by people of varying races on Broadway. Also, Elphaba is literally a metaphor for discrimination (as well as the entire subplot of talking animals being discriminated against). Maybe wicked is not the story for you lol
@@GrinningLikeaDelicateJamesDean The Wizard of Oz is not a story of "discrimination"! This movie is just exploitation of a familiar mythos for left wing propaganda. Seriously? A wheelchair witch?
I would say my favorite musical of the decade is Joker 2.
