Six Color Desert Effectiveness

- In this video I test the effectiveness of 6 color desert camouflage. This pattern was designed for an arid and desert environment, however in this video I test the patterns effectiveness in a woodland environment in the late fall and early winter.

This video shows that camouflage is primarily behavior, rather then color:
1. Do not make any noise.
2. Hide behind tall grass, reet, bushes or trees.
3. Stay low as possible.
4. Do not move.
Which Brent demostrated perfectly.
Chocolate chip is my absolute favorite desert pattern. Fun fact: it was developed in 1962 but it didn't enter US military service until 1981 same year as the woodland bdu's and originally it was considered for Israeli forces not US, but as luck would have it, it went to us. Unfortunately it phased out because it proved to be effective only in the American Southwest it was just too harsh for Middle Eastern desert's. Still an all around great camo though it's a very unique pattern plus it looks freaking cool, the next time you take a trip to West Texas you should make a video showing it's effectiveness in the actual desert.
In SoCal the brush up in our hills and canyons had to be where they developed this pattern. 100% works there.
Tri-Color is best for Iraq
Six Color is best for the Southwest and Mexico
M81/ERDL is best for Western/Eastern Europe and the Jungles of Southeast Asia
Tiger Stripe is Best for Southeast Asia
Mulitcam is best for a frat-after party when everything is covered in vomit
ACU is good for the moon or your grandmother's couch and nothing else
You know where the Brits got the word "khaki" don't you? It's the word for the color of "dirt" in one of the [many] Indian dialects from the time of the Raj...
Actually choc chip was phased out because it was expen$ive to print, what with 6 colors, 3 of which were barely different after a few trips thru the wash cycle. Instead of cutting it down to 4 useful colors, the U.S. went overboard & we ended up w/ 3 brown cammies. They in turn were phased out because they shine like raccoon eyes in the IR band; so instead of just specifying a different set of dyes that played nice w/ NVDs, .gov spent *billion$* on the whole wretched ACU debacle... but at least UCP actually works in the IR bands, even if it's hopeless in the actual optical wavelengths that constitute 80% of the real world use.
Chocolate Chips were found to be very effective in the Persian Plateau, unfortunately all the uniforms were twill, rendering them to hot. I still don't know why they didn't print up some NYCO ripstop instead of spending billions on multicam
That Chocolate Chip Camo actually works in a forest environment I'm impressed.
Little known fact: chocolate chip pattern works excellently in cookie factories
Perfect, now we know what to use when Nabisco or Keebler want to start shit
Chocolate Chip is actually a Desert Mountain Camouflage Pattern that came out in 1970 .It saw limited use in Grenada & Panama. It was widely used in Iraq and Samolia. Never would have thought it was going to work just as well in a Woodland environment.
i didn't know they stacked cookie dough that high! sorry i couldn't resist
LOL
I was thinking that it could also be khaki 2.0 because of the base color (basically khaki) and everything having a browner shade to it (the pattern, not the forest).
Its actually pretty good camo in wooded areas in spring n late fall!
We should've stuck with this instead of ACU
your damn right man
360Nomad ACU refers to the cut of the uniform, what you mean is UCP.
Chuck Norris ACUs themselves are shit. They're uncomfortable and they rip very easily.
360Nomad This sounds more like a fabric problem, not a problem with the uniform cut.
+Chuck Norris angle the chest pockets outwards and get a real collar on there then it will be great
Excellent camo for Brazilian savannahs in the dry season and also in urban settings, especially in broad daylight.
I thought the same. You think the Tri Color Desert could be a good camo for the Brazilian northeast and Savannahs?
Didn't know Brazil had savannahs! Thanks for the info!
This camo video was so good I actually went out and bought a set of 6 color desert pattern for the upcoming hunting season. I have property that looks exactly like this landscape and I was shocked to see how well you blended into the woods. I never would have thought a desert pattern would work in a wooded environment. Thanks for a great video.
Appreciate it brother, glad I could help.
Outstanding video! This camo is superb in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada, CA in the autumn. A highly underrated pattern.
Thanks for putting the time to put so many types of camouflage to the test.
Thanks for watching.
Wow! I almost can't believe my eyes. I used to have a set of chocolate chips but I got rid of them because I figured that desert pattern (or at least that's what it was intended for) couldn't be more than just a cool looking pattern. It works superbly, and the environment in your videos are very similar to mine (north Georgia). I'll definitely be picking up another set for winter. Your videos are great man they've helped me pick out my spring/summer, fall and now winter patterns. Keep up the good work. Semper fi brother.
myron666mosley666 Thanks brother, glad I could help.
What matters most is the color palette and color frequency of the pattern in relation to the environment.
Easily the most effective pattern you've tried yet for that time of year - so long as some concealment is involved; any time you get backdropped by the foliage, the pattern loses its effectiveness. Great job, bud!
I love seeing this camo get recognized it a damn good camoflauge.
wow, thats pretty good ! with the 3 color i picked you out every time ,6 color only once. even when i rewinded to look where i knew you came from it was still almost impossible to honestly tell.the other desrt pattern you did i like alot is that tropical flecktarn .
anthony kaczmarek Yeah Six color does a really good job here.
Works like a champ, had trouble finding you in all but one scene. I've always loved this pattern & in fact converted a set of bdu's into a woodland pattern by dying them a light lime green, have been told by many it is the most effective "green" pattern they have encountered.
Thanks Brent another great video. Very interesting and surprising how effective this pattern is in the woodland enviroment. I would like to see this done again but at a different time of day/ different light. The camo colors were a perfect match for the enviroment in that light. Toughest test yet. Try it a t mid day or noon.
IMO it worked better than the 3-color desert for that environment but like the 3-color desert, it really stands out in sunlight
This is awesome. Now I want to find a few sets of this pattern to add to my collection.
(Read with count Dooku voice) I've been looking forward to this.
Indeed, it just goes to show you that pick a pattern according to your environment..
Thanks again for making these vids..
We still had sets of six color DBDUs, new in the plastic, in my old NG unit's supply cage as late as 2013.
Nice
Works well with dead, dry vegetation i thought,..Great one Brent !!!
Awesome video. Good training!
Chocolate chip is good for attachment of ghillie material for ghillie suit your bottom layer looking like dirt rocks and pebbles lying prone , I used to in fall and winter sometimes with a woodland top , 100% Cotton or 50/50 cotton/ nylon. Great gear 👍
nice piece of camouflage, interesting comment section about the camouflage and its history and interesting stories on where camouflage patterns blend in the most. i wanted to hit the like button, but couldn't find it.....
Super effective here, i didnt suspect it lol.
Awesome video.
This makes me want to go and get a pair today.
Also great Vids Brent. You have a new Subscriber,
micheal collard Thanks man, welcome aboard.
Came across your videos while I was looking at different camo patterns that may play well in the "cross-timbers/hill country" area of Texas that I live in... and brother, ya sold me on chocolate chip!
The 3 color stood out a bit too much for my liking, and as much as I love M-81 woodland... it sticks out like a sore thumb in the dry grass and brush of the Corps Of Engineers land I'll be hunting. Lot of rocky, rolling hills out there with nothing but dry grass and stubby scrub brush for intermittent concealment.
The 6 color chocolate chip though? Seems like it's gonna do the job as well as I could ask it!
Perfectly demonstrated as well!! A lot of thought NEEDS to be given to WHERE and HOW you're concealing yourself, and you showed that amazingly!
Gunny I really Love that patern,
Awesome video Gunny
Thanks for the video! Just watching now in 2021!
Been thinking about switching to desert chip. I live in Western Oklahoma and it pretty arid terrain here year round. I think you have helped sway may decision. Thanks for the video again, hope all is well with you and yours sir. GOD BLESS AMERICA 🇺🇸
Thanks brother, glad I could help.
3-9 was on there that's the best iv seen for a while no wonder my nephew said that turkeys cant see him its great stuff
Definitely getting on whole set!
really great versatile camo
It did better than I expected.
Even though its not considered cool by many outdoorsmen I use military camo patterns only. Maybe partly just for old times sake as a Vet who knows. But for Virginia, Woodland in spring summer and 6 color in late fall and winter work very well, or I mix them. Cheap and wear very well.
Cool! By the way chocolate chip cookie camouflage was original designed for rocky terrain. During Desert Storm the Military didn't have enough of 3 color desert camo so they went ahead and gave the troops the 6 color camo instead.
I am actually surprised at its effectiveness in winter woodland. However, I think this was what the Marines had in mind between seasoning two Marpat Uniforms.
6 color very cool.
Wow! This seemed to perform better than the Desert MARPAT in this environment. Maybe it's all the darker brown in the chocolate chip. I also heard that it was the same dark brown that made it less effective in the deserts of Iraq during the first Gulf War.
***** Yup, Its the dark redish brown which is what I think makes it work here.
Just like a Navy Seal Team I salute you, sir
It actually works pretty damn well
I want to see how effective this camo is in the spring/summer. I couldn't find you at all! This is definitely going in my survival pack!
Rachel Martin Its amazing in the fall/winter like you see in the video, but there would be no way that this pattern would preform in the spring/summer. The tan in the pattern is a lighter beige tan, I just can't see it being able to blend into lush vibrate green vegetation.
@@Brent0331 I want to know if you had to choose one and only one for the rest of your life for all seasons? What would it be? I believe your answer would be woodland?
How cool!!
+Fifi Fornow Thanks
....and STILL National Hide-n-seek Champion!
So excited to get this uniform I already have the ghillie net and a boonie
I don't know why, probably because it's so unique. But I really like the look of that pattern. Great video
Thanks brother, I like it too.
This pattern was designed for the South West deserts of the USA, which are rocky. That explain the hughe brown stripes and the white dots with black shade. Unfortunaly, the Middle Eastern desert are most more sandy, so the 6 color pattern was not effective. And the 6 color pattern was replace by 3 color pattern.
thank you for the informative video for the chocolate chip camo,I thought it might have some use outside of desert environments..just haven't tried it yet. thanks.
+Jon “stlinfidel” Aichs No problem, thanks for watching.
9:06 some ninja level shit
A copperhead snake has similar colors to desert camo and has no trouble hiding in a woodland environment
I can see this being a really effective camp for dove hunting.
The fact that this camo works better than marpat desert pisses me off
Ha, I certainlly agree that this is more effective than desert MARPAT in this environment, but you have to remember that both of these patterns were designed for use in the desert. This is certainly not their intended environment. I think what scores big with 6 color desert here is the color of browns it has in it.
I guess, I do agree though, the brown does add a sort of shade to it all, which I think makes it more effective in this sort of environment, unlike the marpat desert which is more oriented on light desert tans
The marpat desert works great in the area i live in... (Southeastern NM)
If you feel better, it was actually a pretty useless camo in the Middle East. It’s better fitted to the U.S.’s rocky and mountainous deserts, against the Middle East’s *sand.*
Joshua N. Ajang Maybe in the rockier regions. Generally anywhere resembling the rocky deserts here in the Southwest (where this camo was fielded) is ideal for it.
Just like the 3-color desert pattern, you stood out more when the sun was directly on you. Was still very effective though in shade and brush like the 3-color. I would like to see how these do in the summer time in heavy woodland environment. Yeah.... might not have good results but I would like to see if you could get away with it if you didnt have another uniform and were in a very diverse area.
I could only pick you out a few times... pretty effective if you ask me... wish people made molly/pals and more current type gear in this pattern.
Works well
Subscribed and liked!
Thanks
That's awesome stuff me and my little brother watched a good chunk of ur vids!
Pretty awesome I’d say.
Wonder how it would look with some green RIT.
From a distance at the end when you stated your closing part, it actually looks like a Copperhead snake pattern.
Plus the 6 color pattern tends to stand out in desert a little to much, so that's why the got rid of it and replaced it with the 3 desert color camo. Just to give u a heads up
Tho' I've never had or used this pattern... often thought it could be effective in Alaska tundra as well as alpine and sub-alpine environments. Most of it is all cotton stuff so not great for the cold, windy, drizzly, conditions (probably why I do not have any - lol). Interestingly... from the footage...it appears the flatter to the ground you get w/ it the better performance overall. What I see in transitioning lighting is a bit of issue = bright reflective to contrasting silhouette. Hope that makes sense. Another great video Brent!
Interestingly --- I think it outperformed Brit Dessert DPM... (surprised me!) It had however much of the same transitional issues, plus the flatter to ground you got the better it worked.
Thanks for watching and for the input.
Hi my names adhya i from Indonesia i like your camouflage
In a lot of these videos you’re obscuring yourself to the point where just about any clothing/gear in a natural color will be extremely effective. Obviously that’s how you would use camouflage in real life but I would like to see some more clips like 7:45 where you’re mostly “exposed” to see how well the camo breaks up the human silhouette. I think more clips of you starting in kneeling and standing positions would be good also, as once you move up from prone it’s hard to get an unbiased look at the camo in that position.
Also, I think some more poses in which you’re “watching” the camera would be good, regardless of what position you’re in. As we all know the silhouette of a human head is something the eyes lock onto pretty easily, and if you’re in a showdown in the bush you’re likely going to be watching your “target” aka the viewer. So it would be good to see how obscuring the camo is when stalking someone.
Great videos though Choco is amazing in dead foliage.
Even though the "6 color desert" was made mostly for the sandy desert of middle east countries. This military camo pattern also blends well in Southwestern United States desert areas of Arizona,Nevada,Texas,New Mexico and especially southern-east California.
Brush in the hills most def in southern cali
TheXtro101 thats where it was designed in the new mexican deserts
You mean designed for the soulthwest us and used in the wrong place aka kuwait.
TheXtro101 in desert shield the coalition thought that the Iraqi military would head into an area that has actually some features that the southwest deserts here in America, it would be remade into the 5 color desert.
Got a kil on about 4 other than that very effective. 👍🏻 fore runner of multi cam prints, just as good.
In Quantico winter, Opfor using this always blended in better than Marines in Woodland.
I still have this uniform with matching flak vest and a.l.I.c.e. pack cover
It's like where's Waldo
I've always found that this pattern blends in better if you bleach it so it fades I've even dyed a set light green that gave it more of an all around use like woodland bdu's.Keep the videos coming they're very informative can you tell us which web gear and pouches you used in this video.Thank You for your service.
Sgttdc ALICE web gear in this video. The H-harness is an aftermarket ALICE harness that I believe I picked up from Barre Army Navy.
Honestly worked better than three color did
Great video. Can you make some more videos about patroling in the woods? From greece
I have two patrol series videos on my channel, you can find them in my "military instructional videos" playlist.
six color works! It's better than three color. Three color is too bright, it day glows. six color is "invisible" when worn in the correct environment.
Wow, Brent, another cool camo video! I recently picked up a mint, used set at the local swap meet for $16, blouse and pants. They appear to be 1st. Gulf war issue and belonged to a Marine Captain according to the laundry markings inside the uniform. Both top and bottom were also my exact size; small-short. (Yes, I am part 'Hobbit' ) : ) Thanks for the post!
+art strader ha, funny stuff. Good find brother, that's a great price.
+Brent0331 lol i got my dads gulf war hand me downs, all mint condition
Hand me downs like that are awesome, though! Now all I need is a genuine (not replica) 'Chocolate Chip' boonie hat. The search continues!
art strader lol my dad has 2 so i guess i got a bit lucky there , he also has 2 helmets from desert storm, now those are really rare
+art strader Coleman's Military Surplus has boonie hats. I can't recall if they have six Color Desert but I think they do. They have a website. Go check them out!
Hopefully this doesn't have too many calories.
Pretty good camo overall, definitely one of my favorites.
I’ve heavily considered this camo type in the northwest. I live right on the state border of Idaho and Washington and there is so much open prairie and also dead/yellowing/tan foliage everywhere like this. Almost wonder if it would be smart to have an m81 set of camo as well to be able to swap between camos. Not only for setting but to have a clean pair to swap into.
I have a feeling this pattern would work better in a rocky desert environment like Utah than fall woods.
My 3 most worn and favorite camo patterns are M81 Woodland, 6 Color Desert and 3 Color Desert. Not bad for a middle aged guy still in pretty good shape. A shooter is always a shooter no matter how many years transpire. These days the bigger question would be can anyone shoot with A1/A2 irons anymore? By the looks of those Frankenstein fugly ARs with red dot optics and skinny M-Lok hand-guards it doesn't appear that way. At least you could use a quad rail and a detachable carry handle. That would be too K.I.S.S. for this new wave of shooters.
I'm sold on this as my fall pattern
Its good right! Who would have thought.
@@Brent0331 the 3 color desert pattern looked almost too bright to me, but this shocked me
@@Brent0331 by the way, what are your thoughts on Helikon Legion Forest?
Works ok. Tiger stripe beats the hell out of it. Quick tip. It is hard to judge the effectiveness of the patterns when most of your body is completely hidden from sight behind concealment thus exposing only a small part of the uniform. Great job on your part concealing yourself from view but kind of detrimental to the point of the video. Great series though and keep 'em coming.
How does it defeat the purpose of the video, in each “effectiveness test” I give you several different scenes. Each scene is different in that I expose more or less of my body to the viewer. No matter how good these patterns are they’re not ghillie suits. The human outline is EXTREEMELY recognizable to the human eye. So I vary up how much is exposed in each scene, and if the pattern wasn’t effective, it would catch your eye. Case in point, I just did desert MARPAT the other day and it’s completely ineffective in this environment. So much so, I’m not even going to upload it. It didn’t matter how much of my body was exposed, I could see exactly where I was every time. I get your point, but I’m giving you what you’re asking AND MORE…. In 9:08 I’m completely standing up!
Another example is my German snow camouflage video, I kept myself more exposed and not really using any vegetation to help break up my outline to try and show everyone how the pattern blends into the environment on its own. The end result was everyone commenting that they thought the pattern was ineffective because they knew exactly where I was right away in every scene. My intent was for everyone to see how well the pattern matched the environment, but everyone assumed because they could see me right off the bat that it was ineffective. Which is a shame because it really is a good snow pattern.
***** Sorry if I seemed like I was being hyper critical. I am enjoying the series immensely and you are giving a vast amount of examples to demonstrate each patterns strengths and weaknesses. I was only referring to the "specific" instances where by your positioning in relation to the available cover only a small piece of the BDU, i.e. a piece of the boonie or a section of the shoulder or elbow was visible. Most patterns given that kind of positioning will blend in provided you aren't moving and won't be picked up by the casual eye. For me personally it is examples like 9:08 that interest me the most i.e. how well a pattern performs when vegetation and shadow are used to break up your outline but no special preparation is taken to conceal your position. Thank you for your work and dedication on this series and I look forward to the next installment.
LefteyeRighthand
I gotcha man, I appreciate your input.
Spray some green on it and chocolate chip becomes a highly effective pattern!
It has been done (dyed lime green) and indeed it makes for a killer woodland camo
It won't blend well in my locale, but it's darn cool looking.
Hey brent, I know this is a tad odd, but could you do a UCP/ACU effectiveness test in a heavily vegitated woodland area? I'm interested to know the results. Thanks for the great content!
Thanks, but I have no plans to test UCP at the moment.
It's a little bright but it's actually not a bad camo color scheme at all.
I can see why it wouldn't work so well in plain deserts like the Middle East, I can definitely see this working very well in more hilly and more vegetative dry climates and fall weather in forests and what not. I think ima get me a pair and try it out in the Utah desert brush
It’ll probably be effective for you man, thanks for watching.
If our troops really want to disappear into the Middle Eastern desert's they should just wear coyote tan or good old fashioned khaki.
6 Color is most definitely the thinking mans retro camo.
Hello Brent0311,
I'd like to ask, where can I get DBDU in military quality.
Thanks for your answer.
Ebay is your best bet.
Would 6 color desert work in the summer time as well? Thanks.
I'm aware that TSP designed All-Terrain Tiger Stripe in response to Crye Multicam and as a candidate to replace the USAF's ABU Tiger Stripe in Desert and Arid Terrain Operations; however, I'm honestly surprised that, both, Chocolate Chip and Coffee Stain are more effective, in a woodland environment, than something that is meant to be "All Terrain."
Its a great camo for winter in tall dead grass thats for sure if you dont belive me ask the deer
Woodland during late Fall to early Spring, not much leaf growth on trees, mostly hues of earth, brown, and dead vegetation on the ground. Even the shrubs are pale, almost khaki-like in color. So it’s not so hard to figure out why that pattern works very well in such an environment.
I’m not so confident during late-Spring and through the summer though.
Here in Spain we had this camo and I liked it. But now we have a poorly modified (copy) of multicam pattern...
Handy for the Sierra Nevada area, I guess?
Chocolate chip workings in a sunny woodland in autumn but not the desert apparently. Where it was supposed too.
That pattern looks like it was designed for that AO.
Can you do a part 2 for spring summer?
Not with this pattern.
Soldier's & Marines mixed and matched Chocolate Chip with Coffee Stain .
can anyone tell me what the best gear color to go with the 6 color is?
Good Morning! what is the mark of this six colors of desert proppers or rothico or is it government
Can u do some with sleeves up? I wonder how big of a difference that makes
TankJockey38 Big, the oils on your skin shine. Sleeves are always down when you go to the field to train in the military.
How come the US Abandoned this camo for it seems effective
We're 6 color desert ever worn with black jungle boots?
