      @@MarksTestLab I just installed the 16gb timetec in my 224+. Initially I didn't push it in hard enough at the angle so it wasn't clicking when pushing in. When I booted up it didn't see the ram. I thought it was dead chip. Then I pushed it in harder and then it clicked. Now it's seeing 18gb total memory and Plex performance is a lot better as well.

      So there is no limit of 6gb of ram?
      Works with 16gb?

    I've been on the Synology NAS journey. My conclusion, such as it is, would be to buy the 4 drive units rather than the 2 drive units. Having said that one of my "main" NAS units is the 214+ with 2 x 3TB WD drives. I've also been pleased with the Toshiba N300 series drives although they are not as quiet as the WD drives. I'm also a Draytek fan.

      what do you use your nas for?

    • @markh5481
      @markh5481 5 месяцев назад

      Fundamentally for shared documensts so they don't live on a computer. I've a lot of stuff going back many decades and iyt became awkward having them on a single computer (compounded with the risk of loss).
      I don't quite go down the 3:2:1 route but I have a two drive NAS (the 214) as main storage and a single drive NAS (a 115) which housed a drive which came out of a retired WD MyCloud.
      My next purchase (when it comes) is probably one of the 4 drive Synology units to allow a bit of an evolution path. @@etcetc3800

    Although Synology officially indicates a maximum of 4Gb's of extra memory, I added an extra 16Gb's in my DS220+ :)
    Overkill for sure, but I got a good deal for it. A total of 6 to 8Gb's is probably the sweet spot for most people. Especially when you're going to run any additional apps on the NAS itself. Mine is already using around 10% of its built-in memory just sitting idle (with Plex server installed)

    Do you find the WD Red HDD drives cause any issues with compatibility? Synology is pretty set on claiming only their products are compatible but from what I've seen others seem to work without any issues, it just comes up with a yellow warning when you install them. Did you come across this as well? Also, do you know if this setup would work well with Plex?

    • @MarksTestLab
      @MarksTestLab  3 дня назад

      Yes, to be honest I had to return one of the WD Red disks as it flagged as bad. Tried a repair but no joy. The disk was replaced and has been stable ever since. Just put it down to a faulty drive. Sorry I don't know about Plex. Thanks
