- This is part of several excerpts of a live show I directed in 1979. I apologize for the horrible video. The microwave was "breathing; the show was recorded on 2'' video tape for archival purposes; then 3/4'', then to VHS, then to DVD. Yet, the excitement and muscianship of the Seldom Scene is captured at the old Birchmere in Shirlington.

I was probably there for these. Tom made me (and later my brother and sister-I'm Tom's eldest) drive him to and from the Birchmere on our learner's permits. Great music. I loved DuffEY (don't forget the "e", people!!) kissing his mando at the end of his ride. And MandoMuchacho, it was the Red Fox Inn, 4940 Fairmont Ave.,Bethesda.
I have spent many hours at the Birchmere, especially at the old location shown here. I saw the Seldom Scene probably a dozen times, and a long list of other performers. What a place that was!
The shows here were always awesome. I must have seen them here 20 times. Love it, thanks!
Outstanding! Love this band, and John Duffy, what a loss!!!
I never got to see The Scene when Duffy was still alive and your videos have given me more enjoyment than you can imagine. Thank You!
my friends and i went most every thursday during our last 3 years of high school and 3 years more. Ritual!
john's kissing his fretting hand makes this recording totally immortal
Thanks or posting this video . This was the Seldom Scene at their best! I remember going to the Birchmere regularly to see them.
Tape is awesome bluegrass..go seldom scene.1979..rj..some of us remember..I saw them live in 85.rj
A young Red Shipley MC-ing! I had the privilege of subbing for him on Stained Glass Bluegrass at WJMA in Orange a few times in the late 1990's.
Yeah! As i mentioned, this is a live show recorded back at the station for archival purposes. Problems existed in getting the signal back to WETA. Plus the 2" tape was dubbed down to 3/4'' and eventually (years later) to 1'' tape. Hopefully the spirit shines through. Dave the director
I always liked when they played non-traditional bluegrass......Theme From Exodus , House of The Rising Sun , etc. seemed like they were gonna have a good time even if you didn't. Great sound , great musicians , and Duffey was stone cold nuts. They would hammer each other in good fun......never saw a bad show. Thanks for uploading this.
This is classic footage of a legendary band! I only wish the quality was a bit better. Thanks so much for sharin' this!
What else can be said by such talented musicians that I've followed since I first met Tom, back in 1957 when he was actually playing the mandolin, and was at a friend of mines house where Tom, Mounty, and another of Tom's friends by the name of Jerry were going to jam with Tank Giles and banjo player, Douglas Teagle ,but most of all I recall Tom doing a solo, that's always been a favorite of mine, a Stanley bros. Number called: ANGEL BAND, Tom aced it of course, and a few years later, Tom was where he was valued by the hottest urban bluegrass band in the DC. Area, that was The Country Gentlemen, where they played every Thursday night, as well as the Red Fox in Bethesda, as well as a place on Rockville Pike. Always superb music & musicians second to none.
Don/t apologize, I love it! If it were not for this I would never have been able the experience the start of my favorite band of all time at the Birchmere! Thanks so much.
Thank you for your comment BanjoBoy. Remember, it was only shown once when it was broadcast live. Glad you could get through the raggedy video.

I'm glad you got to see them with Duffey. I am still a BIG Scene fan and although their sound with John is forever silenced, Lou Reid does a fantastic job and "The Scene Sound" still comes through. Lou and Fred do a great job, as does the others. Needless to say, Ben is like a rock!
This video brings it all back! Was working at Pentagon, USAF, I was in the audience during this recording. Amazing. Is a DVD available?
This was the time, the place, the sweet-spot of great American bluegrass. This was before they went to the table setup.
Duffy. What else can you say?
Gosh it's fantastic!! Never knew thie even existed!
awesome vid ! thanks so much for sharing it ! i subscribed .
Thanks mandomuchaco for your warm remarks. That's why I posted them.

Larry the Legend! (aka Mike Auldridge)
Phil Rosenthal wrote a great song (Muddy Water), but his voice is no comparison to John Starling's. He was the best!
@dsdeutsch Legends of the Potomac are playing in Berryville (Middle School) on Sat 01-08-11
thanks Deutsch! Lets get the band back together!
Not an amazing place, but they booked amazing acts. In one week I saw Richard Thompson, Jorma Kaukonen and these guys.
Mine, too.
Does anyone know the exact year The Birchmere moved to their current location in Alexandria?
