John Duffey performing The Boatman - from the Seldom Scene album - Dream Scene - John Duffey, Ben Eldridge, Dudley Connell, Ronnie Simpkins, & Fred Travers.
i play this and Wait a minute over and over again i love it my daddy played this for me and its stuck with me ever since when he passes away this will be played and itll forever mean something to me
The Seldom Scene was my first introduction to bluegrass, beyond remembering the 1 channel days of TV and Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs Show of my childhood. To say I was amazed would be putting it mildly. Wish I had gone to some festivals while he was still with us. What a voice!
Good gracious that's gorgeous. Duffey's stellar vocals--the tenor foghorn--and some beautiful dobro by Fred Travers. Straight to favorites with that gem.
Tommy Patterson I hate John Duffey. He’s an asshole and was mean to my grandpa once back in the 80’s for no reason... probably just jealous cause my grandpa grew up in EXACTLY the same area Ralph Stanley did, Big Stone Gap, Virginia.
@@justanotherloser2572 Maybe it was the other way around ' your grandpa was jealous of John because he was a great musician and successful. What did he do to your grandpa ?
At least half the listens are me...don't know how many times I've listened to this song. It isn't a hymn, but it has that feel. I can't believe how strong his voice sounded when he was so near death.
I wrote this song down in my music notes 10 years ago after hearing it on KAXE Grand Rapids MN. I was reviewing my song list today and came across this romantic ballad. I've played it ten times today. This will be played at my memorial when I pass on. RIP John.
GREAT singer and he makes the song great. What talent and to think he and Charlie Waller were both together for so long. Thank heavens the beautiful sounds they left us with can be and have been saved. Just beautiful.
...this is a wonderful compilation of John Duffy's work. I first saw the Scene at Carlisle Fest outside of Hamilton Ontario mid 70s and was hooked. Saw them again at Pinnacle Hill Fest in the Ottawa Valley, Ontario and Kissimee N.Y. This comp. brought some tears for sure and the expose by Akira was very a bit heart-wrenching. John Duffey is one-in-a-million and is sorrowfully missed...we love you...RIP
He was my hero. I loved him so much that gave my son the middle name Duffey. I actually have to avoid listening to John and the SS unless I can start bawling in privacy. Like now.... :)
It is hard to zero in on my absolute favorite you recorded, but I always come back to Boatman as my number one. Thanks for creating such beautiful music, you guys are legends!👍 Only wish I had the pleasure of seeing JD perform live.
This song was played at my son's wedding this past Friday, in memory of his uncle and my brother John Mahorney. Miss both John's so much.. The next generation is sill listening..
What a pleasure to have grown up in the Montgomery Co. Md. area around these guys. Seldom Scene, Johnson Mt. Boys, Bill Harrell, Larry Stephenson. Thursday nights at The Berchmere, Gettysburg blugrass festival. I could go on and on...... See you on the other side John .
Travers342 - Thank you so much for postign this song. This is one of my personal Favorites. Duffey was one of a kind and this song is just wonderful. Thank you thank you thank you!
Fred, I asked Randall about this song back in 95 and it's similarity to The Traveler. He said "I'd been trying to get John to sing one of mine for years. I thought the easiest way to do it was write one like he'd have written." I dunno if y'all had heard that, or noticed the similarity. I thought it a good story. He was surprised someone remembered that song.
Wasn't he something Mr. Roenthal? (or anyone else). I was at Festival, about 1969 0r 70 , when you took up guitar duties with the Scene. I had wanted that spot...Fat chance, since I had just got back from Vietnam, and was not up to speed either in my playing, or in my mind in general. I saw you coming down the rocky hill with someone, maybe Eldredge, reassuring you that you'd do just fine! And you did...big time. Hope all is well with you. Thanks for your music.
i play this and Wait a minute over and over again i love it my daddy played this for me and its stuck with me ever since when he passes away this will be played and itll forever mean something to me
This has become one of my favorite tunes of the Scene..... Never will there be another voice and talent like John Duffey.... Rest In Peace

Cant believe there are only 340 views of this tune.....There will only ever be one John Duffey and he is sorely missed by me and others I know!

I love John Duffey
Love the voice, love the song, love the band, I could sit and drink too this all night, except I don"t drink! I do love it!
You don't need to drink, just sit back, close your eyes and roll along with the song. Can't get better than this with no hangover either.
Ol John was the best..

No male voice ever resonated like this. Sorry. Nobody. John, u were a hillbilly angel.
John's been dead for 20 yrs died in 96 same yr Bill Monroe passed
The talents of those two men will never be replaced. Great musicians.
They broke the mold after them two!
I went on find a grave and he is not listed. Does anyone know where he is buried?
