Bernd, you're a DR Jedi Master. You're one with the DR Force! In comparison to you, we're just humble DR Padawans. We can learn so much from you. Love your in-depth tutorials.
Bro you're saving lives here color tab magic mask wasn't working didn't even know this one existed and is closer to resolving the issue. Thank you good sirrr 😁
Curious, why for 3D artists? How do you use it with 3d? So far I applied it only for Compositing with live action material. But maybe you have a use case I haven't thought of yet?
Haven't even watched the whole thing yet. But just by watching the intro and by knowing your channel, I know this will probably be the first proper tutorial for the magic masks. Everything else I've watched so far only used perfect stock footage that worked right out of the box (which makes the tutorials useless to me). What I need is someone showing me how to get a good mask if it doesn't work well outright. Pretty sure I will get that here (and I could really use it, as I have such a case right now at work). So, thanks in advance! ^^
Thank you. A light bulb has finally turned on for me. I have watched so many Magic Mask videos to find why I am having so many issues with losing the mask when I do anything with the clip. That Lock feature is just not highlighted anywhere and many videos encourage the clips be compounded and rendered adding lots of steps.
Brilliant because it wasn't as simple as you originally thought. A great instruction on using multiple masks to finesse a mask. Learned how to bring masks into colour page as well thanks
I'm not well versed in Davinci Resolve yet, although I have the licensed version. So I'm kind of a beginner (although I've done video-editing with Premiere and dabbled somewhat with After Effects in the past). But these were some great tips and situations to address problems, even for a beginner to understand. Some bits might have gone over my head, as they were going to fast, but they were also not the focus of the video. I do have a question though. I'm actually starting back with video editing, to do 2D to stereoscopic 3D conversion of movies that I like and don't have 3D versions of them (so generally older movies). I've found a basic tutorial on how to set that up with Depth Mask and Camera3D, which after a few tries, I finally seem to get a decent result. Although I notice there is obviously still warping going on. And depending on the scene, there isn't enough depth in the distance, as I have to use the DepthMask to focus on the main subjects. So I think I need to start cutting the main subjects out of the background, so I can apply a seperate DepthMask for the background and the main subject. Might even need a 'third layer' for some foreground elements. That way, I can get more aggressive on the depth of the background, without 'extruding' too much of the main subjects. Am I right in thinking the MagicMask is the right tool for this? As the MagicMask tool can select persons in the Color tab, is there a way to mask/seperate the main subjects from the background in the Color tab, and then use those 'seperated layers', to use in the Fusion tab? Like you do at 17:40 with the MediaOut in the Fusion tab to the Color tab, but then the opposite. Would be nice if someone could point me towards a tutorial on how to approach such a conversion with Davinci Resolve. As these are already completed movies, how do I approach the changing of each of these settings for each shot/scene, without breaking the movie into parts? Cheers
Yes, you can use the Magic Mask to create manual depth maps or sometimes to fix existing ones. Stereoscopic conversion used to be a lot of manual rotoscoping. Now with AI tools things go a bit faster but it can still get laborious. Have a look at my recent tutorials on the depth map as well.
I think that for the hair there's a way to mask it out separately and use the Frame Average node to get rid of the flickering yet still maintaining its natural motion.
Hey, Good video again, thank you. As into Fusion on a daily basis for so long, I had come to the same conclusions and - sometimes after many tests too 😆- know now that if you're slipping into adding too many substract strokes, it will fail in the end... So yes, good advices here, well done. You even gave me a couple of tips I didn't use because I'm not on the right projects for that, like using a rough MM as a solid mask sometimes, or maybe adding a point tracker for garbaging unwanted remaining areas (even when consistent, I kept on using the polygon's default KF instead of gaining time) Good continuation 👍
Excellent. Is it possible, using fusion only, to use the magic mask to create a coloured border around a person/object? I feel I have experiementet with quite a bit of combinations of matte control, alpha channels, garbage mattes etc, but to no avail.
Well you can dilate or blur a mask with a matte control (or errode/dilate node) and then use a second matte control to subtract the original matte from the larger dilated one. That will give you an edge mask for an outside edge around the masked subject.
Agh, just told me to do rotoscope manually next time... Magic mask is absolutely wonderful tool but just like the can and a fish footage. It almost impossible with moving people that is spinning around back and fourth. At least now I know how to use it properly when I need it though! (You won't believe how many tutorial I found just scribble all over the subject and call it a day)
Yeah, I guess we are all waiting for the day when AI tools "simply" extract a person and make it look perfectly right - but that's still a hard task and all those beautifull demos usually have very plain backgrounds...
hey, whenever I use the Fusion page's Magic Mask (rather than the colour page version), my render comes out without the mask (eg: if I mask a person out of a shot, the whole shot is in the render). What am I doing wrong? Alpha issue? Thanks!
Not sure how your flow looks like, usually we don't need to render the mask but apply it within the context of our composite. The mask will send out all pixels if you don't Post Mulitply (checkbox in the MagicMask settings). Also if the mask is not tracked or if you copy&pasted after tracking and lost the tracking data then it's also not working. There are a few Resolve operations like copying clips etc. that will require tracking again.
Great video! Is there a way to combine multiple magic masks in Fusion? For example, creating three separate magic masks, one for the face, one for the left arm, and one for the right arm, and combining them into one MediaOut for the color page? I learned that combing multiple masks is better than one single mask when coloring. I know how to do it on the color page but not in fusion. At the moment, I'm creating multiple outputs to send to the color page. Thanks!
Yes, you can do that and I'm actually doing it in this tutorial! Sometimes it's as simple as merging together, in other cases you might only work on the alpha channel and use a MatteControl or Channel Boolean node.
@@VFXstudy Thank you for the reply! I have to watch the videos again. I know how to send multiple rectangle masks, and magic masks to the color page using multiple outputs (I learned it by watching your tutorials), but I wanted to see if there is a way to merge multiple magic masks before sending them to the color page. It got confusing for me when you started using the garbage mask. I tried merging two magic masks, but it did not work; they turned black.
Hi VFXstudy, is there any way to trim down Magic Mask selection using power windows? It gets confused with hair sometimes. I would like to mask the hair out completely using a power window. Thanks,
Sure, in the color page you can combine both on the same node. In Fusion you can connect masks like I am doing in the video or use a matte control node afterwards to add garbage or solid masks
I don't know there are such a cool features on resolve.....but why big budget movie is cutting on AVID...and resolve is still a underdog in nle why and whats a difference between avid and resolve ....
the magic mask in fusion tracks a bird in flight better than the polygon in the planar tracker. is there any way to use the magic mask track to then Stabilize in fusion?
No, unfortunately not. It doesn't really generate movement data, only pixel data for the masks frame by frame. The "tracking" internally is probably more an operation of shifting pixels from one frame to the next while trying to estimate object boundaries. At least that's my understanding. In theory, you could of course run a tracking tool over the output of the magic mask - perhaps that works sometimes, haven't tried yet.
@@VFXstudy Thanks for the insight about pixels vs tracks with the magic mask. If you ever try tracking the mask I hope you'll share that. I'll try figuring it out myself but I'm just a davinci novice trying to lock-on my birds.
Sure, why not. You can either create different masks by adding more magic mask nodes into the flow or you can reuse the same magic mask by connecting the output to multiple other nodes.
hallo Bernd, super Video.
Can you do easy to follow tutorials ( Ideally for noobs ) on Removing Background, Blurring background, Replacing Background, Darkening or lightening background on Combat sports fighters? They tend to strike/move quick and basic magic mask will fail most of the time. It would be great if you could do tutorials magic masking on Boxers , Kick-boxers, Muay Thai fighters, MMA fighters, Lethwei fighters, Karate fighters, etc. At least in Slow motion footage if it's unachievable in real time. Thanks.
Making a tutorial on one specific content rarely makes sense. What you need to learn to extract a boxer won't be much different from extracting a person running fast in an action shot or extracting a race car. It's about learning to extract things and then apply it. It just get's harder and requires more fine tuning and more manual intervention as the footage gets more difficult. So start with something easy and work your way up. This tutorial definitely contains lots of tips that would apply to your case.
magic mask in fusion works very slow. and 2.5 fps for 3090 - it's super slow I think. I have 1.2 fps for 4k video in macbook M1 pro. But in Color tab I have 7 fps... Why it so slow in Fusion - IDK. I found it very not optimized, usually it used only 1 core of CPU and some times barely loads GPU.
I think it should use the GPU heavily and it runs quite fast on my RTX3090. Haven't really observed much difference between Fusion and Color, though I haven't done any measurements.
