I’ve only fired one Hellcat. A buddy had bought it and I helped him break it in. It shot fine and functioned fine out of the box. Only problem which affected both of us was apparently riding the slide stop lever and preventing lock-back after the last round fired. He has large hands and mine are medium sized and attributed the problem to the way we were trained and practiced grip. Worked fine with a thumbs up or revolver grip. That’s the only reason I don’t have a Hellcat. Didn’t want to change up my grip. If they were so inaccurate, they wouldn’t be selling like they do. I would bet they would have worked just as well! When I have someone who tells me there is a problem with their gun, 99.9% of the time it is NOT the gun - it's them. Today's guns are inherently accurate and they are just not shooting it with proper techniques. Anyway, I hope the guns owner asks you for a few bits of advice on how to shoot, aim and properly squeeze a trigger. Obviously - that's the issue on hand. Put a target on the wall, anywhere you feel comfortable dry firing in your house. Clear your gun and put your ammo a few rooms away. Ready the action to fire. Put your sights on target. And try to pull the trigger without disturbing the sight picture. Keep practicing till it's perfect. And then maintain it.

This is a great way to find out where the problem lies. The last time I was at the handgun range I was shooting my EDC gun and I was shooting about 7 inches high. This seemed weird as I am usually more accurate than that with this gun. Then I was shooting my CZ-52 and also hitting about 7 inches high. This told me the problem was not my EDC gun. It was me. I had been shooting rifles before that and my shoulder may have been a little weak and sore from that.
To keep your target camera in the shade, try picking up a foam core poster panel (about 20" x 30") at Dollar Tree for $1.25 and use a spring clamp to attach it to the tripod and shade the camera from the sun. Just a "Grip" technique. Those panels are handy for so many things, and cheap.

Then over compensating with the off hand grip. Making this mistake will ensure ever barn in America is safe. Now when I see this start to happen I put the gun down on a table and practice picking it up and setting my grip. I do this 5 to 10 times to limit the drill focus to a single task. Sometime you just have to stop, and review the fundamentals.

Subcompacts present real grip challenges for me as well, and I wear medium size gloves. Can't imagine how tough it is for larger hands. It's like there's not enough frame/grip to fill the space in my hands. One-handed, it FEELS fine in hand, but still shoots snappy since it's so small (PPS M2). When I take it to the range it takes me about 25 rounds before I've got a decent two-handed grip on it.

Well, this was a great way to begin a Wednesday morning; THANK YOU, Howard.
ALL of us have, on occasion, blamed that damn X . . . it’s just doesn’t shoot well. Okay, I own two Glocks (a 23C and a 36) . . . and I shoot them terribly. BUT, folks at several ranges shoot them very well. So, I am forced to conclude the problem is “the Indian, not the arrow.” As I suggested, this happens to many (all?) of us.
With my snarkiness concluded, I’ll offer a more “technical”observation. OBVIOUSLY, modern striker-polymer autoloaders (especially the micro-compacts with approximately three inch barrels) really aren’t intended to be superbly accurate. Rather, their design and manufacturing teams produced firearms with reasonable, defensively effective, accuracies at relatively short ranges, which are also light, concealable and have adequate capacities. That was the goal and LOTS of micro-compacts attain it, some marginally better than others. Not too many years ago, a 2.5 or 3 inch inch barrel Roger SP-101, Smith 19, or Smith 686 defined excellent “near-pocket carry.” Well, the precision with which they were manufactured - reflected in their cost - often provided better accuracy than today’s micro-compacts. However, imho, the really germane question is “does firearm X achieve the objectives for which it was designed?,” and the answer seems to be “yes” with many / all micro-compacts (if, of course, the “Indian” does his part well).

I wear XXL gloves and would really struggle with such a small pistol. I've shot a LCP Max and can do it decently, but I would need a heck of a lot of practice to get similar results to what I can get with my Masada or VP9. Most recently, I've been shooting a Glock 44 to practice for an upcoming competition and it's taken a lot of work to get decent accuracy with it, mostly because it's so darn small in my hand. At the end of the day, it's practice, either dry fire or getting rounds downrange that get us closer to a decent level of marksmanship with a given pistol.

This can happen I know as a counselor that when you expect something you in advertently and unknowingly caused it to happen. Shooting is more of a mind game than we would like to admit. It is not always a technical failure. And our egos will not let us i accept that we could mentally be at fault. Henry Ford said some thing like if you think you can you are right. I actually bought the trigger kit but preferred factory parts & springs. Probably just my eyes but both guns hit low with the factory sights so I went to XS Big Dots. Finally had time to check the zero on the Pro yesterday & was vertically stringing it between 15 & 20 yards. But my groups aren't really much bigger than yours here. I also realized I didn't really start to tighten my groups with the Hellcat until I got to about 500 rounds. it is not easy to shoot a handgun, compared to a long gun. You only have two points of contact on a pistol and they are both hands out in front of you. Grips size, trigger control and support hand work is very important. You have 4 points of contact with a long gun. You just have to practice more and try different things with a hand gun to get better at it. I use a 6" target from 7 to 15 yards and if i can keep them in that target I am well pleased. I am just a guy that carries for self defense for me and those around me. Try gripping more with the off hand and relaxing the main hand so you get a better trigger pull. You can buy a laser snap cap and it will show you if you are "milking" the gun. Making it go low and left, or low and right. The laser dot will come on and you will see it move. If it comes on and stays relatively steady, you are doing it right. Do not worry about where the laser dot is hitting, that is not what that is about. The grip may not fill your hand enough if it is shooting all over the place. Get a pistol with a thicker grip. Rent and Try before you buy, if you do not know anybody that will let you shoot their gun.

Howard, I think you need to teach your friend to shoot. And while we're dealing with his modifications, how'd you like the (I assume) Apex trigger? The one knock I keep hearing about the Hellcat is the trigger. How much of an improvement is the aftermarket replacement?

Truthfully, I liked the stock trigger on my Hellcat better. The aftermarket unit was slightly lighter, but it was also kind of mushy. The stock trigger had a cleaner break.

For me I must have a slim pistol as I carry IWB @ 3:30. I bought a P365, P365XL, Shield Plus with a 4" ported barrel, Kimber Micro 9, & a LCP2. The Shield shoots the best with or without a red dot. But since the dot sits over the peephole the lens fogs up FAST and causes stovepipe malfunctions from the brass bouncing off the dot back into the chamber. Removing the rear sight on the P365XL keeps the dot as far back as possible removing fogging and stovepipe malfunctions. I've also replaced the barrel with a True Precision 4.2" SS threaded barrel as I like the power of a 4" barrel and doesn't add any problems for CC. Then I bought Wilson Combat grips for both P365's & found putting the P365XL upper with my Holosun 507k on the P365 lower completely was concealable. For comfort as well as keeping the grip tight to your side I use the 2 clip Clinger holster with their comfort pad. Small, thin, lightweight, extremely accurate pistol with options for 10, 12, 14, 15, & now 17 rd. mags combining Magguts with OEM mags.

@@ronolson2024 thats good info Ron, thank you. I've heard several people mention your idea of using the P365 XL slide (longer slide) on the P365/Wilson Combat frame. I agree with you that a slightly longer barrel doesn't really affect concealability for CCW purposes, it's the grip that kills you. Since the Sig parts are modular that might indicate one could buy a P365 XL, then just order the smaller WC grip online and cobble it together.

It has been my personal experience that a lot of people who can shoot perfectly acceptably with standard or target length barreled pistols tend to struggle when they try to master the short sighting radius of a compact handgun. As it happens, that includes ME! But, long story short, the simple truth is that fault does NOT lie with the gun.

Hi Howard. Thanks for another very interesting video. Along with most of the comments, I suspected your friend had a grip problem more than an inaccurate firearm problem. Or perhaps the short barrel length caused a sight alignment problem. I’m a large guy with large hands, and I’ve found the smaller handguns just don’t fit my hands, so my grip feels awkward. I might be able to train my way through the issue eventually, but instead of changing the way I shoot for one particular handgun; I just end up carrying the one I’m most comfortable with. Instead of throwing more money at the problem with this handgun, Maybe your buddy can sell it or trade up for something that fits him better. Thanks for all you do! PS- have you tried wrapping some aluminum foil around your shot camera? Or forming a shade with foil. Yes it looks goofy but it might save you some production headaches. 👍🏻👍🏻

There are firearms that just don't shoot well for some people. This pistol may not fit the owner's hand just right, the trigger length of pull may be too long, or the sights don't catch his/her eye very well. I'm sure that the owner probably has other pistols that they shoot very well with, this just isn't one of them. I would trade this pistol in on something that is a better fit and that I could shoot well. There are ranges that rent guns and I would test out some other models to see which one is the best fit before committing to buying.

There is a lot of is X better than Y when discussing these (or really any) Firearms when it's really what works best for you. Private owners are not police departments or the military they don't need to buy something to standardize to that works best for - any - given person they should really only be concerned with what works best for them in particular.

One thing that i think hurts the micro pistols for "accuracy" is their size. Mechanical accuracy is very good. The ability of the shooter to establish a proper grip and then mate their support hand to reinforce their grip can be difficult for some shooters. With the 365 series my fingers wrap around the grip touch the other side of my hand, leaving nowhere for my support hand to touch the grip. The gun wants to twist in my hand as a result and it is difficult to get a proper trigger press as a result

Kinda seems like the problem is the owner of that Hellcat. He would be better off trading it for a compact with a fatter grip, like a subcompact Springfield XD-9 or XDM-E in 9mm or 45acp. I own a Hellcat Pro, and while I do like it, I find the square skinny grip to be less than ideal in my hand, and I tend to be less consistent with it compared to my XD-9. I much prefer the fatter grip of the XD-9 or my P320 XCompact.
