Mikael Akerfeldt told me it's his favourite Steven Wilson song. It's easy to understand why.

" Access denied" was a track I wrote for Lightbulb Sun that I absolutely loved, but everyone else hated.......according to SW!
All can be read on his site (Back Catalogue of "Recordings")

PT--GREATEST BAND EVER--HANDS DOWN THE GREATEST LIVE ACT I HAVE EVER WITNESSED IN MY 47 YEARS! I especially love this older stuff.

I'm gonna set this song as the security alarm in my house. So everytime a thief tries to break into he'll hear "AAAACCES DENIED"

This is the best example of how ppl can misunderstand "better song/worst song" with "i like it/idon't like it".

I love this song! It sounds very Beatles-esque and different to the typical PT sound (if there is such a thing!) Can't wait for the Recordings reissue so I can finally have some of this stuff on CD.

Steven Wilson was into writing "novelty songs" in the Stupid Dream/Lightbulb Sun era. Another one in the similar vein is "How is your life today" on Lightbulb Sun.

manco82 I’d say Linton Samuel Dawson was as novelty as SW has ever got lol

    Misheard lyrics all the way:
"You're kicking me with that look of shitty stain"
    "The fucker trolled a man"
    :D

I came here expecting to see people saying they think this is the worst Porcupine Tree song and was not disappointed. :P Personally, I love it; I dig a little quirkiness. Also, I'd vote for "Four Chords That Made a Million" for worst song. Not that it's bad. There is no bad Porcupine Tree song.

Ugghh. Its one of their better songs. It makes me kind of angry that people do not like this to be honest. Cute, weird and creepy.. You have to keep in mind that Steven Wilson is influenced by bands like The Cardiacs, Momus and XTC. I wish he would write more quirktastic songs. Lately he has gotten so serious.

and as a curiosity, is a tribute to the cardiacs song "fairy mary mag" of some years before

  • @CradoxXx
    @CradoxXx 12 лет назад +1

    Exactly.
    Let me quote "Pure Narcotic":
"You keep me waiting. You keep me lone in a room full of friends. You keep me hating. You keep me listening to 'The Bends'."
I don't think that's a coincidence... also, if you compare the slide guitars from the Stupid Dream / Lightbulb Sun era to the mentioned album, in my opinion you can hear the inspiration Steven has drawn from that album.

This song is so much better than 4 chords that made a million. It fits right in with how is your life today.

@3leftstotheright Order it from Burning Shed. Royal Mail is really fast and you use pay-pal to pay for it. It costs about 10 GBP for the CD.

Something about the robot-y dissonant digital atmosphere is oddly similar, especially since the only Radiohead song I can identify at most times is Paranoid Android.

Not their best song is an understatement, but it's certainly not bad.

I'm a huge PT fan as well as a huge Radiohead fan, I wouldn't compare two bands as great as those for "betterness" - just listen and enjoy what they produce for the masses :)

  • @gerbilisy

  • @YaenGamedev

A line in 'Pure narcotic': "You keep me listening to 'The Bends'". Steven Wilson refers to the album "The Bends" by Radiohead. Different song, yet same era.
Conclusion: An influence by Radiohead is actually plausible here. Just saying.

Like all good songs this song goes from playful and cute replete with lyrics referencing Thomas the tank engine and Japan to themes that heavily imply forced insemination.

@3leftstotheright I seriously doubt that because Radiohead hate prog rock with a passion.

Reminds me slightly of Offspring - when you're in prison, just the vocals of this song. This song is much better though.

Of all the comments here, nobody's gonna mention the obvious Thomas the Train reference when he mentions "the fat controller" and the music takes on a similar melody to the theme?

It doesn't matter who was first and I seriously doubt Radiohead have even heard of Porcupine Tree let alone have influenced by their music. I can recall Thom Yorke saying that Prog Rock was pathetic, Krautrock was more Punk Rock than Progressive, and Pink Floyd was too slow to be Progressive.

@3leftstotheright I can't even compare PT with Radiohead. The latter are unoriginal and terrible live. The Beatles are out of date, they are great don't get me wrong, but it's time for us to move on from them. Music has evolved so much since the Beatles were around.

Hands down their worst song. PTree is my favorite band, but I'm sorry, this shit is jarring. It honestly physically hurts to listen during the loud part- not even exaggerating.
Admittedly, most great bands have one or two songs that don't do it for me. Creep, Magic fucking Bus... that sorta thing.

    • @Eleventhearlofmars

Creep is one of radiohead's best, coming from a hardcore fan who's listened to all of their b-sides and everything
