Willie Weeks on bass. Willie has played with numerous great musicians including several Ronnie Wood albums. He's also played a lot with Clapton and I believe is still part of his current touring band. Andy Newmark and Willie Weeks are right up there with the greatest rythmn sections of all time.
I saw the New Barbarians in 1979 at the concert Keith had to do for the blind as part of his punishment for the heroin charges in Oshawa, Ontario, CA. I like these Barbarians better. But the whole Stones band also showed up and played the benefit also. Their only appearance in North America in 1979. A singular Keef experience!
I love Keith and the boys but what shouts at me is Willie Weeks. That guy showed a lot of class and laid down some really great bass guitar. Smooth but built on punch.
This was the best band of this era for this type of music. They were better than the stones...just not an arena band. But if you like rock, soul, funk and most importantly, guitars, this line up is the best of all time. Mick, Rod and Keith all stole from Ron. Ron just didn't get the brass ring, but he certainly back others who took his amazing presence and guitar shaping...his chord and attack were unequalled.
Forum LA ,'79 tour, What a show ,so different from the Stones! But that Stones Vibe was there. Billy Preston and Stevie Nicks were the guests. Place was packed ! Love this period when Wood's influence was everywhere. Ian Mclagen had a spinoff Bump Band I got to see a 'Perkins Palace in Pasadena. Got backstage. Great band both of them. Seventies Roll
My pleasure. Confusion often arises as, when the above gig was finally released on DVD, the named the band "The First Barbarians" or someting similar. The name The Barbarians was suggested by Neil Young in '79 for the band Woody was putting together to promote his new album at that time (1,2,3,4, from memory) but they couldn't use it as there was already an American band called by that name...hence The New Barbarians....
What a thrill to see this again after all these years, thank you rustncrust for uploading this, it brings back fine memories of Kilburn and the pubs in the surrounding area. The gig wasn't bad either. I taped this gig at the time with the m/c between my feet, replaying it on the milk train home in the early hours of the morning. Still got the tape.....but dare not play it anymore. Many thanks again :) Got any more!!!!!!
Gd to hear this song played live, awesum backing band with a little keith richards guitar.i had ronnie's 1st solo album,"I got my own album to do"good album.
The Shirley in question was Shirley Arnold, who worked for the Stones from the early 60's until around '73/'74 when she left The Stones to work for The Faces. Somewhere I've got a copy of a message from Ronnie to Shirley on which he's written in large capitals "Hello Shirley"...need to ask her if this was before or after "I.G.M.O.A.T.D." was released. Who knows, this may have been the inspiration for the song!
Great performance by Keith , Ronnie and the band..hard to find a better video out there of Keith doing what he does best.,.heroin addict of course during these times..but..Keith's junkie licks are sure what turned me on to the Stones.
I can see it in Willie Week’s eyes: “These cats are so messed up, WTF, these chord changes are flying all over the place”. I hope they paid him well, he is awesome.
Thanks. I thought this was Stanley Clarke, because I knew he was with them and I thought the clip was from the New Barbs tour in 79. I didn't know there was more than one bass player. I've also heard of Willie Weeks, but didn't know he was African American. Thanks.
Now I want to see moonlight Mile live! The stones used to record live hardly ever over dubbing! At least that's what I heard!? I began with painted black 66!
This the song and the song far East man where quincentennial to the music of the time! Including Steve winwood and Eric Clapton and George Harrison Jai guru Deva!
You're f****** kidding me I heard this song on Ron's first album? Was it a cover!? I love Ron Wood Mick Taylor also! Thanks Mick Taylor Excel on main Street!
I'm glad someone else is still listening to these in 2021,i've still got Ron Woods original albums, it's ironic you have to come on RUclips to get to see up and coming youngsters ,playing Blues and Rock from my generation, because we wont see them anywhere else and great music lives on
Stanley Clarke played on a number of the American shows but missed supporting Zeppelin @ the second Knebworth (UK) gig in '79 due to medical problems. His place for that one gig was taken by Phil Chen, who was playing in Rod Stewarts band at the time.
20,000 light years from home!!!! You kids never heard that s***! It's time dig in to rock Stones beetles led Zeppelin itchycoo Park! Humble pie Frampton! Climax blues band! Savoy Brown! George Harrison's All things must pass unprecedented! Good Day 2021!

Tim Godby Nathan east is the bass player with Clapton’s touring band
I think he played on Its Only Rock n Roll
It’s so raw and real I could watch and listen over and over. Amazing.
I saw the New Barbarians in 1979 at the concert Keith had to do for the blind as part of his punishment for the heroin charges in Oshawa, Ontario, CA. I like these Barbarians better. Keith & Ronnie playing some nice riffs and Ron singing ,Sounds great .
I met Willie a couple of yrs. ago in San Diego, Cali... nice guy!
Then after 40 years they released the best track on the album in my view! Plundered my soul!
I simply adore the sound of Keith Richards Les Paul Special P90´s DC.

@davidglow3 That "black", my friend is the one and only, Mr Willie Weeks, a blistering bass player!!...and yes...he's ice cool!! ;-))

Well, the title track from It's Only Rock & Roll originated from a riff Ronnie came up with!

Thanks. I thought this was Stanley Clarke, because I knew he was with them and I thought the clip was from the New Barbs tour in 79. I didn't know there was more than one bass player. I've also heard of Willie Weeks, but didn't know he was African American. Thanks.
Willie Played on George Harrison's Extra Texture tour in 74 also. Willie in 1981 replaced Tiran Porter in the Doobie Brothers.
Willie is also part of Eric Clapton's touring band

Bello 'sto pezzo rocchenblus, non lo conoscevo mica. Bello, bello. Caspita che naso ha Wood, mica ci avevo mai fatto caso: simpatico ed enorme.
