A lot of people have been having trouble with the Voronoi texture. It was recently updated and now you have to set the F1 to Distance to Edge. This will make it look like cracks. Also if you got stuck watching this tutorial or just want to see the whole node set up check out the image here. imgur.com/gallery/Jr95qlL
Great tutorial. Thanks! As a note for everyone: I learned while recreating this tutorial: To get the "crackle" look in 2.81 Voronoi node; use the "Distance to Edge" setting
Can I please ask you something. At 1:00 he selects the camera and moves it, but no matter what I try am unable to do that. I just can't seem to get that 4-arrow move icon to appear so I can move the camera like he does. Please help.
@@presidentkang1986 I had the same problem, turns out that auto-perspective is the issue and it's turned on within the preferences / navigation menu by default. Turn that off and you should be fine.
I also feel that I get better results by setting the RGB mix node to "multiply". With "mix", there are some straight lines from the voronoi texture that I can't get rid of (might be due to a recent update ?)
TO GET THIS TO WORK IN CYCLES: Just connect a Geometry node to the normal input of the normal node that controls the atmospheric glow. Connect the geo's normal output to the normal's normal input. Now it should work perfectly in Cycles. However, you'll have to do the glowing sun in a compositing program or inside Blender.
As someone who is extremely new to Blender, I found this to be a fantastic lesson with a very satisfying conclusion. All those nodes may as well be Egyptian heiroglyphics to me right now, though! You've got a new subscriber. Thanks for sharing.

This is just about the best planet creation tutorial I've seen and been looking for! Thank you so much. Your pace and general explanations about why you add a particular node is generally very helpful. One minor trouble spot for me is that I am having trouble stitching in the sun side surface glow / {Fresnel, normal, Emission} because you just drop the mix shader in between some non visible nodes and the Material output around 12-13 minutes in, so I have to go back and figure out what was done before to make the right connections. For this type of work, for EVERYONE who shares a shader video, it would be helpful if you either showed the whole node setup at the end in full screen and/or provided a link to an image of the node setup and reduced the viewport size in favor of the Shader view so more of that is visible. It's easy to lose context.... That said, I'll get this working soon and really appreciate that you shared this wonderful tutorial!
Thank you for the really nice comment! Sorry that I didn't see this until now! That is a great idea about showing the whole node tree at the end. Whenever I do really complicated material again for a tutorial I will definitely do that. I also posted a link to the full material set up in the pinned comment! Thanks again!
Just a tip! instead of the stuff you are doing from 15:36 - 15:50, just click the environment texture node and use the shortcut "ctrl+t" or "command+t" in a mac. This is a shortcut that you can use if you have the node wrangler addon enabled like he does.
Yep, F1 to Distance to Edge. Also, if you have an issue with the math node, you can simply make a moon (doesn't have atmosphere) and remove that node... skip the atmosphere nodes as well. They tend to look good, if you're running low on options.
Shading smooth is no longer 'w,' it is right click Also, there is no crackle in blender 2.9, change the vornoi settings to '4d' and 'Distance To Edge' at 9:42 the cracks will look very different in 2.9, so rather than going up, go down
On Blender 2.92, everything except the Voronoi Texture node went smoothly; it offers different options than those in your video. I'm surprised by my result. Very noob-friendly content, thanks a lot.
Just got around to trying this. Excellent tutorial. Don't know if I am as comfortable with nodes as you but definatly learnt some new tricks! Just wondering if you new, or anyone else noticed, the crackle option 7:44 is no longer an option in the Voronoi Texture? I did something different with this and it still looked good. Thank you!
Thank you very much for that tutorial! Cant say I'll remember every node but I can tweak them and reuse them for future projects. I appreciate what your doing with these tutorials.
Thank you , like every tutorial I follow I always seem to go a different way with something . I have a potato computer so I need all the help I can get
Jo nice tutorial but when I render it, the edge of the planet is like not round. It has sharp points and then straight lines. But in the normal view it is round. Anyone can help me?
Thank you for this. This is a great tutorial if one wants to just get something done. It worked. However, it provides no context for all of the nodes. At 18:52 I'd prefer that it be twice or three times longer so that I can understand WHY I'm adding nodes and which ones. After a while I kept hearing AIRPLANE in my head ("What's your vector, Victor...?"). I know, I know. I'll just learn all that as I keep doing it... Grrr.... What if...I wanted to create a...Minecraft planet? Or a Donut and Sprinkles planet?

thanks for the great tutorial. Nodes have always been a bit much for me, but with the help of tutorials like this I am getting the hang of them. One note, though., about the placement of the sun object. While it does add something to the overall look, unless your planet is set in a binary system you would not be getting that much light on the far side of the planet.
I saw that Voronoi was update so I just played with it for a min until it looked like what you had in the video. over all I am very impressed with this tutorial it gave me great results that look just like what you had at the end of the video. I had a lot of fun with this thanks for your tutorial!
Great tutorial! I use Camera Focal Lenght 15-20 mm so I don't have to scale World in Shader Editor; Mapping/Scale x, y, z = 1. In this way the sky isn't distorted in any direction.
This was incredibly helpful, thank you! The only thing I still can't get my head around is how you memorize all those nodes and their functions, connections, etc. Can't see myself using them as intuitively one day. I wonder if there's another method I should study to understand node editor better.
Since Node wrangler is on, you can just click on the texture and press ctrt+t (if I remember correctly XD) that would generate mapping and texture coordinate. Anyways, I love tutorials that are node heavy XD
