It should be noted that the introduction is mistranslated. In case you didn't realize it is NOT Adol at 0:52 to 2:20 - this is just the retelling of the legend of Demonicus. Not that it matters it is still amazing.
+Chris Pickrell I hear ya, I gotta check out Ys I and II as well - and this narrator here isn't bad, but he sounds so bored considering this epic backstory he's telling.
peaceandlovegaming "and this narrator here isn't bad, but he sounds so bored considering this epic backstory he's telling." He reminds me of announcers from late 1980s/early 1990s cartoons (including anime given the Western voiceover treatment). Because of this, he is endearing to me.
Some time ago I began to play retro games on my PSP. Much smaller screen, and without filters the games still look pretty good. About CRTs: honestly, I don't want those monitors back. I admit what you wrote, you're right, but because of CRTs I often got dizzy. Maybe it's just because the monitor was old, but you know, my experience is still a bad one. I'm personally glad we are on LCDs now.
A fellow pixel-art lover, I see :) Honestly, pixelated graphics has a certain charm, difficult to describe. Sometimes I use filters too, but most of the time I leave it raw, more nostalgic... more awesome :D Retro games forever... no DRM, no DLC, no firmware/dashboard shit. Just pure pixelated fun :D Miss those days really :(
the thing about good pixel art is that every pixel is placed where it is for a reason. a single pixel can convey a great deal of assumed detail if it's skillfully presented. when you put these edge filters on, you're just artlessly and mechanically smooshing the pixels together to create something less "blocky", and in doing so you strip the image of its deliberate composition for an senseless blob. why is "removing blockiness" more important than maintaining the character of the image?
yeah, that's another thing - lcd screens aren't great for displaying old low-resolution content. there's a lot of things a crt screen does to subtly smooth out the image while maintaining its sharpness; the game itself being designed for that display helps too. ironically it would take much higher resolutions than our lcd screens are capable of to convincingly simulate that; there are filters now to sort of fake it but you'd really have to get down to the phosphor level to do it as well.
@ADELICIOUSCAKE Terrible anime cut scenes? I don't think so. It's just that the style Hudson used is... old. Honestly, that's why I love PCE. PCE cutscenes just beautiful IMHO. Well, more like the fact they wanted to recreate a moving picture using an image editor similar to Paint :) I like how 'raw' it is.
I would say, that is because of modern gaming. I hate to admit, but after playing a game on PS3 and then move on to a retro emulator on PC, I find the image quite unpleasing, so came the filter. But as I wrote before, it usually doesn't last long 'cause it's just not THAT good, mainly because of the "blobby" and too "spherical" nature of the image. For me, using filters are more of an "adjusting my eyes to the retro feel" technique. Yeah, I know... it's just sounds plain stupid :D
i tried to play the other versions that were on snes (downloaded japanese roms) but the game play seems boring compared to this one.....kind of like the extra artwork in the inbetween scenes....too bad snes didnt have that detail My favorite game when i was a kid
the person posting this is also using an hq4x filter which makes it look all blobby and awful. on a good crt screen with an rgb-modded duo these pce cutscenes are magnificent.
Reverend Ragu so true, thats why i keep my old trusty 32" panasonic crt tv still connected and running with all my retro systems, nothing can compare the original quality of an Pc engine via rgb on the tv that was prepared for.
Ah, to be young again. Be brave, make many mistakes, go on many adventures my young friends!

Maybe it really is Adol... but Adol chooses to write himself as the red haired hero that is depicted in the games.
Or maybe it's just Ma Chao.
I always took it as "people think Adol is this golden-haired gladiator, but he's actually a red-haired youth, as you will find out."
2:30 is when the music kicks in and you feel like you're about to go on an adventure
This would have blown my mind in 1991.
The music and visuals are getting me all nostalgic, and i've never even played this game!
+Ragitsu Same here, I never even had a Turbografx-16...(although the narrator sounds a little too much like Hank Hill if you ask me ;)
+Chris Pickrell I hear ya, I gotta check out Ys I and II as well - and this narrator here isn't bad, but he sounds so bored considering this epic backstory he's telling.

I know what you mean...I'll take your word for it, since you're a little older than me, you remember those cartoon announcers better than I do ;)
Thanks for the tip, Chris! I'll check 'em out right away!
I'mma telling you! Ys music is a blast to run to!

I love the Western almost Frazetta like art style.

My god, that made me so happy!

10 years,but I agree completely!
Sure wish this was available on virtual console :(
All the graphics for that intro fit into 64 kilobytes of memory. I have text files bigger than that.
Remember when Adol already fought Demonicus before the game began and also fought Aliens?
And when he was cosplaying Ma Chao
Loooooooooooove this game, one of the first PC Engine games I've played!
music is so lovely ;~;
The voice came in and I thought it was a lets play...!
2:40 😉
