I was fortunately to be one of the few kids in the neighborhood who owned a TG16 and Turbo duo back in the day. Experiencing this back in 92 was a special moment in my video game memories. The music was what left a long lasting mark for me
I think that if you didn't experience CD games, originally back in the day, then it's hard to comprehend the impact that this game and a few others like it had on people at the time. Or a least on me and my friends. The opening cinematic was and still is amazing. The cut scene between act 1 and act 2 was unbelievable. Seeing and hearing this stuff after coming from the NES was like going from Black and white tv's to color tv's. It truly was that profound.
I don't think people today understand that seeing cutscene cinematics was a big deal back then. Most cartridge games didn't have enough storage to afford cutscenes, and if there were some, it was very limited like a still image or the in-game sprite acting out a scene. This went far and beyond any of that with CD quality music
I remember feeling a chill down my spine after unexpectedly hearing real voice on a home console game. My friend and I both knew at that moment we were experiencing the start of a new era of gaming. We still occasionally talk about that day.
Tales of Phantasia was pretty impressive. But most kids in the west wouldn’t even know about that (or Star Ocean, which had some fully voiced cutscenes.) since it was a Japan Exclusive game. A lot of American Kids would have to wait for CD Based RPGs like Ys, Dragon Slayer: Legend of Heroes and Lunar: Silver Star Story to experience anything like that.
i honestly believe it's a underrated console by having too much backlash for being ridiculously expensive,if you ignore the pricing of it,it had some of the best ports and games of the 16 bit era infact i'd say it's par with the super nintendo as my favorite console of all time.
Personally, I think this game was what set modern gaming on its way. Sure, it wasn't the rendered videos of FF7, but for '89 or whenever this came out, this was fucking epic.
Ys I&II alone completely justified the $199 console and $399 CD-ROM add-on prices in my mind. Maybe not in my dad's mind, but certainly in mine :-D Throw in some Monster Lair and bam, you've got better-than-NeoGeo economics!
Beautiful music to a legendary opening. It didn't have to do much other than to introduce the player to the fantasy world. But this intro went above and beyond.
Can someone explain to me that watching an intro from the 90 of a game give me more chills then a game made in 2023, I mean the music and cartoons are just to awesome. I remember playing this and hearing voices for the first time and I think I dropped a couple of pellets in my underwear.

It was the single most impressive video game experience I've ever witnessed because at the time it was quite common for people to just have a NES and the CD sound was incredible. This version of Ys 1 & 2 is the best of the classic versions. If you could find and buy it or have no qualms relying on "another source", it's worth a play.
@@kanagawa85 I regret it not buying it back then.. not only because I had the chance for it, but also because I was told that Ys 1 and 2 aged badly apparently and that I ate up that opinion instead of informing myself about it. I have to agree, this is everything an opening should be. It's got solid narration, a mystery, action, a cast roll, and two banging songs that work brilliantly together. Ys Chronicles tried to capture some of the magic, but I really like the narration and cast roll for adding some buildup (I also wish more movies nowadays used their intro as a cast roll) and First Step Toward Wars is not as strong an opening theme as the Theme of Adol.
