    Good job making a layout out of cardboard. Lots of people now making train layouts out of new materials, like cardboard and foam ( myself included). Making layouts out of wood baseboards is sooo last century.

    One doesn't have to go far to scrounge boxes from local traders and most are delighted to get shot of them as they take up room and have to use staff time to get rid of them. I get loads as I have people saving them for a local charity I support. Every little helps!

    What an amazing idea to convert 3 boxes into a brilliant shunting layout. Without sounding stupid, how do I work out the points on the track layout from needing to be left or right hand please?

    • @BudgetModelRailways
      @BudgetModelRailways  2 года назад +1

      Thanks. Depends whether your track comes in from the left or the right and where you want the siding. Any Rail is a free download track planner which I use. You can input your board size and then try out different track plans and it will tell you what you need. If you are buying points use Peco as they are much better for a shunting layout as they have smaller plastic parts which means less locos stalling on points

    I have two large boxes of which are 60 inch x 15 in each that'll keep me going during the winter months I was going to buy a 200cm x 70cm picnic table which folds in half but the thought of drilling holes for the wiring and gluing track onto cork sheet onto a nice looking table that cost nearly £100 put me off! I now know the cardboards got the vote! it will be lighter to store upright out of harms way of the dangerous upright hoover as well.

      @@BudgetModelRailways I went and bought the HM6000 for my class 56 and wagons heres hoping it works.. I had my shunting yard in a living room cupboard but it got semi claustrophobic and trying to fit anything into that cupboard was a job in itself ( i could feel the anger management course coming on when things got a bit tight to operate the DCC etc ) I had the elite controller on a sliding desk keyboard tray underneath the table and the electronic wiring of the points controllers modules were impossible to wire as it required knee work so it had to go! now onward with the cardboard layout and i will remove the table and all the gear and transfer it to the cardboard Idea and just store it on its end that way i can pull it out and sit it on the table i bought, with the HM6000 & HM 6010 modules on the back of the layout wall out of sight etc

    Hi, Thank you for sharing this method. I'm in the process of building a model tram layout in OO gauge and have got to the stage of thinking of a light weight baseboard. My trams, paths, road surface, granite setts & buildings are all made on printed card. My track will be card and tin foil with live overhead wire. wanting a baseboard about 5 feet x 2 feet. I may try a 3mm MDF over the boxes as I need a firm support for the poles to support the overhead. regards Paul.

      We saw an excellent than layout at the Newhaven MRC show, I was quite tempted

    • @plreeve
      @plreeve 6 лет назад

      Yes, there is something magical about a model tram running along with an overhead wire.
      Mine are OO gauge from Pete Watson, He has some lovely models in card.
      They are 4 1/2" in length, 1 1/8" width and 2 1/2" in height.
      I want to use a No switch, No electronics, start/stop system.
      This means the trams do the switching for each other.
      ruclips.net/video/7U31u7Juwlo/видео.html
      This is a N gauge layout using this switching system.
      Regards Paul.

    Another very clever idea Mike. As you may know I do tend to throw money at my model railways but I still find what you do very interesting and would never dream of criticising you. Like you I wonder why anyone would watch a video and then click the dislike button. If you don't like it then don't watch it. Clicking the like button is a positive statement while clicking the dislike is a very negative thing to do. I guess it is easy to dislike something when you can do it anonymously! ..................John

    This is a very practical way of making a baseboard. If you want to do it free you are at the mercy of the available boxes. However, if you willing to pay you can specify the size and quantity you want. Here's just one source:
    www.kitepackaging.co.uk/scp/boxes/cardboard-boxes/
    You have to buy 50 at a time, but at less than 50p each you can build a lot of boards or share with a lot of people. They're also brand new.

      I had the layout for about a year, sold it and then saw it listed on eBay about six months later, so it survived lots of transport etc. I found it to be pretty robust. Both using corrugated card and empty boxes sandwiched by card seem to work very well and of course are very light,

      Budget Model Railways Hm well maybe I’ll give it a try on my rifle case. It’s either I use the cardboard method you guys use or I use foam board. Either one will be glued down in some way, still have to figure out what’s best to glue cardboard to plastic or foam to plastic since the rifle case is made of plastic.
