Absolutely love your budget model railway and scratch built building videos. It has enabled me to make a start on the first layout since my early teens, and know I can make something nice without breaking the bank.
This was the video that I found which inspired me. I had seen some great layouts on Facebook, which rekindled my interest. Then I looked on the Hornby website and fell off the chair at the prices. Then I saw this video and thought that maybe I can have a layout after all. For the past few months I have been buzzing. I have found some great bargains and now have everything that I need to get started, having spent relatively little. I will be sharing my railway on RUclips in due course, but just wanted to say that my own efforts would never have come to fruition without Mike and Doug, Budget Model Railways and this video, for which I will be ever grateful. This channel is an inspiration to all modellers that, like myself, are complete novices on a very limited budget. I eagerly await each weekly video.
I really appreciate your encouragement for model railroaders to use their imagination. For kicks I want to specialize in building small layouts and teaching kids to do the same. Manual switching is so right for short width layouts. Thx for the ideas.
I agree, too many spend too much on their model railroad layouts. Model Railroading is about imagination and condensing: straightening out the ovals, enlarging in our minds too small platforms, extending our passenger rakes with fantasy coaches, forcing our unfortunate passengers to jump, etc. No matter how large your layout is, the modeler is forced to imagine...
I love how you re-purposed those packing material for platforms. Wow! I´ve been throwing that stuff away. I see it all the time where I work. Now I know to use that stuff for platforms. I really like that idea.
It's amazing how you achieve such great results from spending so little, man. All I have to do is sneeze while I'm browsing online retailers and well-known auctions sites on my phone, and I end up spending £200. x)
Thanks for you comments and subscribing . I agree with your comments, I felt too constrained by the conventional rules especially in the UK scene, it's like a religious order! I have a freelance Railbus to run on my N gauge layout and am working on a freelance diesel to go with it. The layout is set in a fictitious european country.
budget/ gosh, i just want a garden set..i don't know how people have massive track setup..the cost is way too much to buy by piece..how do they do it?..thanks for the video
Only just came across your RUclips video collection - great stuff, and well presented, anyone wanting a model railway that's not necessarily "fine scale", but which works and won't break the bank should subscribe. Loving it, keep up the good work! Your diesel tank on this layout is similar to one I made for my first test layout a couple of years ago, only I used an old solder wire tube for the barrel. Having said that, I've spent way more than I'm comfortable with on a smallish 00 layout because I'm wanting it to be "authentic", and having one or two good quality scale locos is fine, but recently cancelled an order for the H Class tank/Push-pull set which hadn't turned up to schedule, and then thought "Actually, I never wanted to spend that much anyway!" so I get what you're doing. I live in Hastings, so hope to catch up at a show this year some time.
Hi Paul, thanks for the comment and support. I think we probably all spend more than we intended, I have way to many diesel locos ! Sadly the hobby seems fixated with just throwing money at things which hopefully we are the counter too. We will be at Sompting , Bluebell and Pevensey shows during the year so hopefully catch up sometime
Im building mine as we speak. I am starting with 7 pcs of Kato HO straights and a point. The beginning of my 7ft x 2 ft shelf. My loco arrives from ebay tomorrow, and it looks like it has a dcc decoder in it already, so I will probably end up building a arduino DCC++ base to run it.... then ill buy some used wagons.... but Ill be back on the rails after a 35 year hiatus... I have really enjoyed your channel for these ideas.
In don't have budget to throw hundreds at model railway so this is ideal for me. Looking at buying second hand building instead of new and making other things 👍🏻👍🏻😋
Hi philip here again thanks for letting me no bout train layout iam doing what you said and making my layout now in oo scale and in n scale to .let me no if iam doing right.as I've been with train layouts for a long time now.
Really happy I found this site. So much information. This is just what I want from a model layout. Shunting yard on various different locations. Do you have a track plan layout site. ?
Like this video. Yes I do agree with enjoying model railways without the great expense. Please keep doing this sort of videos, very helpful to myself john
@@BudgetModelRailways I think have watched all your videos. I’m making comments now as have heard it helps your videos along. Also recommend your channel to others, because you deserve it. All the best
Very nice little layout for almost nothing. Sadly [as far as model trains go] I'm in Australia so everything is quite expensive. I'm building a dual test loop layout with extras which will probably be my only layout for a long time. Dual so I can have DC and DCC locos on it. I bought my DC controller for a few dollars like you did and going to use free cardboard models and print my own brick paper to save a lot of money. I've subscribed so hopefully I can see your other cost saving ideas :) Cheers guys
This is the layout I want to make to go with a main station. Is there a video that describes the track pieces and where to put them? Great little video thank you
Thanks. I never finished this and in fact there were some flaws in how the track plan would have operated. Some of my more recent videos have more info and better track plans. Hope this helps
Very cost effective, some corrugated cardboard is about 3 inch thick, handy for elevated sections, keep the tips coming, little while back i got from Poundland these cardboard pots, for plants, they handy for scenics, squash them down and paint over
Hi, thanks, glad you liked it. My latest project ' Homewood' is even cheaper. I can't believe the huge sums of money some people have available to throw at model railways, but where is the fun in that?
Diesel tank? A scene like that is perfect for a pannier tank push pull, and a Dean goods... or? a terrier living in the dog house? That's a Victorian spur if there ever was one!
Hi my name is Chris from Stoke on Trent . I used be very energetic but now have to use crutches. I saw a video on the layout under £35 and it gave me an idea. to a layout about 5ft x 2ft 5in.I am going to do a layout as a mil hospital on the front line with sidings for stores could you help me to design one I be very grateful if you could.
Hi, happy to help. Are you planning OO or 009 please? That has an impact on what you can do with your space. Best advice is keep it as simple as possible, are you planning a loop with sidings or a Shunting Layout?
@@BudgetModelRailways it's going to be shunting layout with hospital trains coming and going. And also stores being dropped off. And hoping to be in 00 Gauge and thank you for your help
If it's shunting you may want to make it narrower maybe 2ft, depends how long your arms are and if you can reach the back. 31 in would allow you to have 1st radius track and a loop. If shunting then you also need to think if you need a fiddle yard which will have an impact on your track plan and where the entry road is. If mobility is an issue, the next question is will it have a perm home or be moved around , in which case make it light as possible. 5x2.5ft will be to big/heavy to move
I no longer have it but it was approx 5ft by 9in. I am currently working on one 44in by 14in take a look at out most recent videos , hope this helps. Mike
Do you like the video aspect of the production? If you don't, I'd love to help and thereby free you to do more "railroading." Please contact me if that would be helpful. I like video editing and would like to have a very small layout myself sometime.
I, m lost for words on just how inspiring your videos are you deserve so much success in your budget model railway business, good luck to you all.
Thats very kind of you thanks for watching

So glad we could help, thanks for watching, the most important thing is to have fun
Have taken photos of this layout and going to build one as a challenge
Great video , and a great idea to help new railway enthusiasts to shop around well done
Thanks,we have loads more similar videos too
It’s a great little layout Well done

Hi thanks, it's so much easier and quicker than the conventional method.
A saving! Try your local pet shop. Bird grit is ideal for ballast... 2kg for about £1.50

I was just like that but eBay prices are so high now its cured me!
You are definitely a bargain hunter...I bought a complete OO set on a school boot sale for a fiver many years ago..

Brillant, there was a article in a 2004 edition of railway modeller about building a cylinder tank on the cheap.
I think your theme is highly interesting and worth while paying attention to. THX!

Love that corrugated engine shed!
Thanks, I also made a double one which featured in Traction magazine
Like this video. Yes I do agree with enjoying model railways without the great expense. Please keep doing this sort of videos, very helpful to myself john
Thanks for your support John glad you enjoy the videos.
I'd be interested to see if it was still possible to make for this price five years later. Ebay prices are considerably higher now.
Come over from Five Elms :) This channel is a great idea, especially when the hobby can be so expensive!
Sorry only just seen your comment, thanks for your support glad you enjoyed the videos

Great video on your “under £35 layout”. Could you possibly show it up & running with a demo of how you do the shunting, loading etc?👍
Hi, sorry but that layout is long gone, it's quite an old video. We do have lots of other shunting layout videos if that helps

Great video. however in usa we don't get to get free cardboard from shipments of appliances. the delivery people take it away
interesting video new to modeling with not much cash and think recycling is the way forward
Thanks Nick , recycling and second hand has a lot going for it.
If I may ask, how much was the rest of the track?
Really neat little layout you got going there, Just goes to show that you don't have to be a millionaire to get into model railways

Diesel tank? A scene like that is perfect for a pannier tank push pull, and a Dean goods... or? a terrier living in the dog house? That's a Victorian spur if there ever was one!
My main interest is diesels , hence the diesel tank, but of course it would work for most periods.

Sadly I never finished it, I moved onto other projects

I no longer have it but it was approx 5ft by 9in. I am currently working on one 44in by 14in take a look at out most recent videos , hope this helps. Mike
How many power feeds did you use
About three sets. However now I use insulating points so then being DC it only needs two feeds on the entry track

really liked this layout and the way you presented it now I'm to become a skip rat
Hi, thanks for the support glad you liked it. I saved a panel door from a skip today, they make great base boards.
