Can you imagine privately battling the things Norm was while doing the final stand-up on the final show of one of his all-time heroes? Norm was one of a kind, and this not only proves how funny he is, but how strong as well
Slight correction; "HIS final show, of one of his all time heroes" as well. GOAT.
He must have told Dave
@@southsideman4891 I was just coming to say that I wouldn’t be surprised if Dave knew ahead of time… this was a gift from Dave for Norm to be the last comic, and whatever he whispered was related to the whole thing.
Dignity sounds strange as applied to him, but that is the way he chose to go out, with dignity.
And the bit he did about Germany was honestly one of the all time great bits in comedy history. Just pure genius. I love that he did that bit in the final standup spot ever on Letterman. Just goes to show after all the hilarious things Norm has ever said, he was just as funny if not funnier in his oldest age as he was when he was technically “in his prime.”
Now, with Norm's passing, this interview is even more enlightening. RIP Norm.
Yes
So much makes sense now. What a tragic loss for the world.
That's how I got here. RIP NORM
Breaks my heart. Everyone from my childhood is passing...Norm was the GOAT!
:( here for the same thing
This hits so different after today's news. You'll be missed Norm
Definitely..
RIP
Spot on!
Agree
He can sleep now rip Norm
You were one of a kind brother
Wow….Norm knew. I’ve got tears in my eyes after this. He knew he was on borrowed time and to be able to be the last comic on Letterman…What a roller coaster of emotions he must’ve been on. Fighting for his life while making people laugh. I’m speechless…
Me too. I'm speechless. It is mind boggling how skillful and strong he was in his last days. Amazing.
How fortunate we are I was born in 60 to know Norm and his comedy and how you try to explain to young kids today how it was funny and good back then and innocent and loving it was different then we had fun
this is the Way for us all. Norm chose to make it a blessing.
So it is
It’s in the ego- rooted in our pride
Reminder that we all are on borrowed time.
All that Norm crying, it reminds me of that tragedy
Stalin was worse.
I wonder if his brother is still there in northern Canada
@@cutlasssupreme6984 walking through blood and bones
So the Germans would want you to believe...
The one that happened in the year 1911?
Rest in Peace Norm... the legend, a wonderful human being, and the real Colonel Sanders.
We love Norm!
All-Right
And Norm loved Dave and Dave loved Norm.
So, the Taliban beat "The World" without masks or vaccines?
RIP Norm.
@Book Book yup. So sad.
I can’t with Norm crying. Rest In Peace, you wonderful, kind man. And thank you for everything. #FuckCancer.
If Dave was his father figure.. Conan was his weird brother figure.
Wonderfully said
I love every single segment Norm and Conan ever did.
or perhaps, a crazy uncle?...
@@joshpierce7820 They were about the same age
Which is fitting because conan sees Dave as a comedic father figure as well
Not only was Norm's last set on Letterman heartfelt, but it's one of the most well constructed 9 mins I've ever heard. He put the work in on writing, placement, & timing and it paid off for everyone. That is how you honor a legend.
...or so the Germans would have us believe.
RIP Norm MacDonald. Grew up watching this lovely human being.
Norm’s last set on Letterman is the greatest talk show set ever performed by a comedian.
Agreed
“The WORLD!!!” The delivery is 2nd to none
now there is no tonight show you want to see.
Spot on. The routine he did that night was pure gold, as strong a set as I’ve seen anyone do.
I'd put it up there with Kaufman doing his Elvis impression.
When Norm got CHOKED UP on 'Letterman', I just CRIED!!!! I bet Dave's doing that now.
Dave, Conan, Seth, Jimmy... All of them, I'm sure.
He is so brave.
He will be missed by all of us in the twin states
@@michaelrmurphy2734 2 of these do not belong
@@timothyadams4477 I agree
@@timothyadams4477 Seth and Jimmy?
Watching this after hearing about Norm's passing moments ago. Really puts those tears into a different perspective. RIP, Norm.
RIP to one of the greatest comedians of all time, the world won't be the same without you Norm
This was a great interview, just like ALL of Norm's appearances.
He's a good guy
Actually compared to his others on the show it wasn’t. This is when he was on the apology tour
Norm is a really talented talk......show.....guest....
@@YokerBoyWhat was he apologizing for?
Norm was such sweetheart and a genuine person. RIP legend.
Norm is and always will be an absolute legend and he will be missed.
RIP to a legend. What a genius at his craft.
Norm's jokes just hit differently. Notice how he says "I couldn't afford the shoes" and how Howard caught it a bit later. That's just how next level Norm was.
Not really..that was a pretty obvious joke... but if you say so.
@@ianrodd9232 norm was different bro sorry you can't see it
This was a moment so much bigger than any of us knew. Heartbreaking and sweet.
Howard's greatest strength has always been pulling genuine truths out of guarded people. No one does it better.
And even during THIS interview nobody had ANY idea exactly why he was so emotional. These was his last goodbyes sort of.
"THE LIGHT WAS ON!" ..."Chairman of the BORED!"...best talk show guest ever!
Norm's love bomb threw Dave - he forgot to emphasize the MAC in Macdonald when he thanked him.
Knowing what we know now.. It's so much more understandable.. Norm truly had the clarity to love everyone and mean it.. It's such a beautiful thing to see.. He made us laugh with his comedy but in the end he brought us to tears with his humanity..
That was actually pretty dam cool how he chocked up for Letterman. Shows he's a human just like us and not just a famous comedian.
He told him in his ear ' I luv u' ... Norm came a very long way to hear is hero say that to him. Truly amazing. And that's when life makes sense. Rip norm Mac Donald.
This has a different tone knowing what was going on behind the scenes now. Rest in peace.
This moment came to mind the second I heard the news.
RIP Norm one of a kind comedian, fearless.
he whispered, “Norm, i love you- but i own a doghouse.”
I knew it!
Lol!
"come round sometime, we'll have chicken"
Lel
Ha! “Oh, you must be one of them gays.”
So genuine.... Such a loss. Grateful for his authenticity and willingness to be vulnerable. Wow.
I loved him on Letterman and he was always great on Conan
I loved letterman, he was always great on Conan
I loved him on letterman. And he was always so good on conan
And don't forget Jay! He was fair-to-middlin' there, too!
That moment brought a tear to my eye as well. You can tell Norm had a great reference for Dave. God Bless Norm Macdonald.
A lot of people will forever wonder what Bill Murray's character whispered to Scarlett Johansson's character at the end of Lost in Translation. I'll forever wonder what David Letterman whispered to Norm MacDonald. Rest in Peace, Norm.
They don't have him mic'd !!!
Dave(whispers): "I hope this doesn't mean ya manna have butt-sex now!"
RIP Norm, I can't even imagine what this is doing to those around him. He's such a magical person. To know him must have been mystical.
Thank you for this interview. Norm was my favorite comedian. As a fan, I am completely devastated of learning of his passing today. There are thousands of comedians but nobody delivers in such masterly detail like Norm did.
RIP Norm Macdonald... you'll be forever missed
God that sweet soul can make me sob in an instant. How I will always love Norm. 🙏🏻
God bless him. He really loved people and felt things deeply.
Norm obviously knew his days were numbered, so he was really saying good bye to Dave.
Glad this got an official post. Thank you.
I always love to hear the tale of Norms run with David Letterman. What a great birthday present!
RIP Norm! I remember running into him at a 7/11 @ 3:00am in Vancouver. We both were looking for munches! You will be missed Sir!
He was a legend!
@@rustyshackleford9309 he was a legend indeed!
Norm was a beautiful guy. That brought tears to my eyes.
This is why we love Howard. Thanks for this. Norm is gonna be, and is one of our generations’ finest comedians. The man is a genius. Gotta be to be that funny. Makes me laugh and that’s the key...
I have been watching anything Norm since his passing ... this made me weep.
Me too, and I think we're not alone.
I binge Norm videos.... I wish I had more!!!!

I often watch the last appearance of Jack Hanna on Letterman. Jack cries. Very moving
I miss him so much
I love seeing these honest moments of genuine respect and care.
I love norm/ Howard content. He’s the greatest
Norm is right up there with Morgan Freeman with one of the greatest voices on the planet. Sean Connery is also up there!
A model of what every celebrity should be--and is so rare Keep a wall between your private person and your public performance person. This moment is touching cause it's a rare break between this wall. So we know it's no BS.
Hes a genius and you always wonder what hes gonna say. His comedy is so great and up there with the greats! RIP Norm
Rest In Peace, Norm! You’ll always be one of the Greats!
Man this is crazy, miss you Norm, always bringing me laughs in hard times
I love Norm. I wish we had more videos of him
I love Norm, everything about him, great interview!
nicely handled, Howard. . . I think we were all very moved by that moment .
Somehow this feels heavier today. But at least Howard gave Norm his flowers while he was still here. That's what matters. RIP Norm MacDonald.
So true.
💯
RIP Norm- you were one of the greatest. My childhood Saturday Nights belong to you and Weekend Update.
That was a great, and appropriate final set for Letterman's show. Norm is one of a kind

Brilliant coverage!
Norm is just awesome. Real as real gets.
thanks for posting this. I just came across it It really shows the personal side of Norm.
I absolutely love David Letterman. Such wit like Norm. He will never be replaced and his show was ground breaking.
5:48 For me I think one of the most fascinating things about the Norm/Letterman dynamic is that he didn't interact with him backstage or away from the show.
Now I’m in tears!!
Beautiful interview.
Rest in piece the ultimate comedian. My hero.
Dave finally pronounced Norms last name correctly at the end,,,,,very cool,,,,Congrats Norm
The youtube clips where Norm is on the Dennis Miller show is so gut busting funny. What a truly comedic genius! Thanks for bringing me so much joy!

I have combed through the blood and bones of RUclips...and have yet to find one Norm talk show appearance that isn't hilarious and/or instantly rewatchable.
9/11 was a national tragedy...
I do the same thing when I’m feeling down. Side note I love when Robin laughs.

Ended up being Norm’s last howard appearance as well :/
Norm is just so special, the last of a dying breed.
"First of all, I couldn't afford the shoes". This killed me. Thanks for the laugh today Norm. I needed it.
