    A year ago I would've been drooling over this lens. I purchased the Sigma 14-24 f/2.8 and the Voigtlander 15mm f/4.5 Heliar earlier this year, and if they did anything, they taught me that I really don't need anything that wide. (The sunstars on that Voigtlander, tho... ) Turns out, I rarely find myself shooting wider than 24mm and the Sigma 24-70 or the Sony 24GM are in my bag way more than anything wider than that.

    I normally film at 20mm since I always film people in my videos, I find it's a nice balance of wide view + distortion free video. However this lens at 14mm oddly looks like it may be usable for this purpose as well as it doesn't seem to have the crazy distortion I usually see from ultra wide lenses.

    Good info! On the Sigma lenses, it could bear repeating what Art vs Classic vs Whatever means in their lineup. Same with Sony... G vs GMaster. When reviewing one marked as such, I could use the refresher on what it means.
    If this is minimal breathing, I was surprised. When focusing on and off the cube, the neon tubes in the background get translated what looks to be a long distance as their blur changes. Is that translation movement the breathing you're talking about? There's a lot!

    • @geraldundone
      @geraldundone  3 года назад +8

      This lens definitely has some breathing, just not as bad as the recent G Master releases. The breathing isn't so much about objects blurring out of focus, but more about when your field of view changes as you focus. If the shot gets a bit tighter or wider, that's focus breathing.

    Quick question, I know they’re not a fair comparison, but just wondering what you’d recommend for real estate videography.

    As always awesome info and review! I think you could also compare these two lenses with the Rokinon/Samyang 14mm f2.8 even though it's not a 1.8 it's a much cheaper option, and they recently released the Rokinon 14mm f2.8 mark ii, and I'm really liking it, would be nice to see how it stands against these much more expensive lenses.

    Hi ! Can anyone help me with some advice ? I am currently shooting some POV videos with my iPhone 11 Pro ultra wide angle lens which I understand is a 13 mm lens. My question is, if I get a full frame mirrorless, which lens should I get in order to replicate the image from the iPhone ( but better quality ) ? One important thing to consider is that I would like everything in frame to be in focus ( no bokeh ) and very good low light performance . Thank you !

    ALWAYS look at Gerald Undone first, For filters Haida rear lens nd filter kit for sony fe 12-24mm f 4 g lens should work have on my 1224 f/4 and f/2.8 for night they have the Clear Night filter that I shot with my f/2.8, very good for sky glow and good colors with ground lights. Where the Ultra Wides like 10,12,14 start to deform is when shooting in a room, shot at a corner from a corner but windows and doors will be elongated/wider. Some will want to use in a church/temple/mansion to get all the cool art but sides will be out of form and best to use a narrower lens and do a pano if possible. I saw a review with astro MW and this lens is like the 20mm f/1.8 and 24mm f/1.4 pinpoint stars wide open at 15s with an accurate NPF of 10.45s with A7s 10.47s A7Siii and a default of 20.95s. For astro the thing to remember yes you have 1.8 but SS has to be faster that 2.8 (accurate 11.73s A7Siii). Why because you are using more edge glass where comma is worse, just physics. The Sigma DOES has comma at 1.8 seen if galactic center is to the right in frame, sad!!! Also remember ultra wides must be level for straight lines. Thanks Gerald will be in my bag!!!!

    Dear Gerald, thanks for the review! Since a year, I use Voigtländer 12/5.6 III for Sony FE. I also tried Sigma 14-24mm. AF, faster apperture and zoom range seduced me...but I gave it back in the end.
    Why Voigtländer keeps beeing my one and only?
    Why I would consider thinking on this option even if you are a autofocus fan? (own experience)
    1. you can leave focus on one position in order to have everything in focus. Hyperfocal distance is extreme on ultra wide angle lenses. No AF needed.
    2. For moving objects, normally 1/160s is sufficient against motion blur. You don't need a AF system. At 8.0 every thing from 1m to infinity is in focus (42MP)
    3. Blury background rarely produces a desired/outstanding ultra wide picture. It is not the top attribute of an ultra wide angle.
    4. Price of Voigtländer is around 800€ thus significantly less expensive as either option presented.
    5. Voigtländer sunstars are outstanding already stopped down 1/3 stop at 6.3. Really well defined, well pronounced, no comparison to Sigma in my experience.
    Don't neglected sunstars in ultra wide pictures! Sun is mostly present in the frame! (Sorry Gerald for the bad photo-weather) the Sun is evidently a prominent element and should appear good...
    6. Center sharpness at 5.6 is remarkable. Edge sharpness is a bit worse. But at 8.0-11.0 edges are very usable. (ISO100, ~1/200 s is mostly no problem in day light)
    7. A typical composition of good locking ultra wide pictures is the game with perspective, lines and foreground/background. In my best shots I have very close elements and very distant elements dominant in the same shot. So stopping down is a must to get everything sharp.
    --> a fast lens provides no significant plus. It also needs to stopped down.
    8. Finally: weight...it is at 380g. I have it with me all the time.
    Even if you add, for example, a samyang 24/2.8 to your kit you are lighter, less large and cheeper than Sigma 14-24mm, and have 2mm extra on the wide end... Honestly, zooms are mostly used at theire extremities.
    The only drawback I see is astro and moving objects in the dark...
    Even indoor shots of static objects, hand held with (low) artificial light source are possible: burst-shoot at 0,5s ISO100 ; one of 5 is fine (IBIS)
    All in all, with time, if you think on the entire "package". It is remarkably how well the various parameters of a lens design are balanced. (I don't work for Voigtländer ;-) )

  • @Black3ternity
    @Black3ternity 3 года назад +1

    So the Sigma is more of a "Fisheyed" vs Ultrawide.
    Had that decision with the Samyang / Rokinon Lenses.
    Ultrawide vs. Fisheye.
    One keeps "perspective" and the other distorts and rounds it.

    • @geraldundone
      @geraldundone  3 года назад +3

      I shoot in S-Log3. So yeah, I do grade my footage. I keep higher blacks to make it easier to see the details on camera equipment, which is usually black. However, I don't adjust my guest's footage, because I want it to look how it looks on their channel.

    • @DP_Daro
      @DP_Daro 3 года назад

      @@geraldundone Yes, I noticed that. It's just a matter of personal taste and what your scenario looks like. If you had full blacks then everything would be very dark. I don't say your footage looks bad but after looking for more than a 1 minute of Jared video my eyes adapted to the contrast levels, saturated colours and overall brightness, so that made this huge difference. How good is the auto correction process of the lens? Sony are very good at correcting optical issues. I'm wondering if the extreme corners can be "improved" enough to see a satisfying result (subjective of course).

  • @TheSmeagol630
    @TheSmeagol630 3 года назад

    Here's the thing, the stretching of the wheels is is just perspective, which is just inherent to viewing the world at a field of view greater than our own. This cannot be "corrected", because you cannot have that wide a lens without it. Meanwhile, heavy barrel distortion, with curved lines, makes perspective "distortion" harder to detect. They're almost inversely related, in a way. Barrel distortion can be corrected for. Shoutout to Art Adams from Arri for this info, when he was on Potato Jet talking about the Arri Signature Primes.

    For your product review videos, does this 14mm lens have advantages over the 35mm you’re using to shoot this video? I have an a7c I’m trying to pair a lens with for (primarily) meetings/presentations with green screen, secondarily for wide angle nature videography. thanks for such a great channel!

    Ist have the Sigma, only good at 2 or 2.8, 2nd took the Sony out on the A7iii and had dove stars but on the A7Siii perfect. 3rd did the March firmware update and dove stars were gone, so do the camera update. 4th if you love, LOVE the 24 and the 20 you will want to marry the 14. Corners are pinpoint in landscape and portrait and no pincushion like the Sigma. This lens is perfect for portrait view 180 + panos even tilted up with horizon at bottom 1/4 as a close object, lifeguard stand is not affected and you will get the entire MW that is overhead after midnight in June, the arc is like a giant roller-coaster add the Alyn Wallace Starglow Filter (when available in 150m) you will get a dreamy sky full of stars, did with 20 and so good!!! I even captured a sea turtle laying eggs that came up behind me with a super fast SS that was so bright had to lower exposure so it looked like night with the stars and lights on the horizon. Gerald I hope you still have the lens and you can do some Aurora Borealis up there where you are. The 1224 f/4 and f/2.8 and 1635 f/4 are also superb for astro for years just pick what your wallet will bear speed is not everything!

    Great review, though I do wonder how this lense would go for astrophotography related work in regards to coma and astigmatism. Review on lenstip did not seem to rate it very well at all in this regard.

    I would like to see your review for the sigma 14-24 f/2.8 dg dn and sigma 16-28 f/2.8 dg dn, the 14-24 it’s few years old but I didn’t see you reviewing it 🙏 and even the sony 12-24 f2.8

      Very similar. In the comparisons the exposure settings were identical and the images look about the same in that regard.
