I told her to hold on to it and maintain it when I am to old or gone. There are so many memories of family trips connected to that car. I would not sell it for 100 000$!

Covered bridges served a few purposes. 1. The roof protected the structure from the elements in a time before treated lumber. 2 They were protection from the elements (like if a rainstorm popped up back in the horse and wagon days). 3. The stories are that they were a place that young lovers could steal a quick kiss while returning from a date.

I’ve heard lots of reasons as to why covered bridges came to be; so horses wouldn’t be spooked going over the bridge, to keep snow off the deck, etc. but from what I understand, the real reason is wooden bridges were covered to protect the wooden trusses from the elements. Wood will pretty much last forever if not exposed to the elements, but not so for concrete and even steel, they will deteriorate over time even if covered.... “I’ll Be dipped“!!! Btw I’m addicted to your videos, your sense of humor and funny names you give everything are absolutely priceless! I feel blessed to have you and your wonderful family in my life. Awesome to see you guys having such a great time !!! Love that your boy's are enjoying it !!! Betty White is doing you proud . . . Trivia report . . . The bridges were covered to protect them from the elements and extend the life of the bridge . . . Bonus fun fact . . . The majority of covered bridges were built between 1825 - 1875, wooden bridges back in the day usually only lasted 10 or so years without being covered . . . Keep enjoying the trip !!! Certainly enjoying watching it . . . . Cheers

5:00 mark is at the Casey's store in Marshall, IL on the southeast corner of US Highway 40 Illinois route 1. This is just a few miles from my Grandpa's farm. Though I live in the mountain west now, I was at that store just two months ago. My wife had to use the bathroom just before we buried my father in the nearby Marshall cemetery in a plot next to Grandma and Grandpa. I enjoy your channel for the nostalgia it brings of my mid-west childhood. Today I find it brought me tender memories of those that have past. Thank you!

Here in New England we were told that they were covered to protect the decking from the elements, wind, rain, snow and especially ice which can severely damage wood structures.

Apparently an uncovered bridge had a life span of about 20 years in the days before treated timber’s and over a hundred years covered.

The town that you went through with the world's largest rocking chair, wind chimes, golf club, ext. Was Casey Illinois and if I'd had know that you was going to be that close to me I'd definitely would have went to seen you!!! I love your videos and I'm so proud of you taking your kids and wife along with you. Also I'm so happy to see what you was doing when you you stopped along the way and would give kids those hot wheels toys. Back in the 70's I had Evil Kanevil give me an autographed toy motorcycle still in the package and that memory has stuck with me for all of these years. Unfortunately I lost the motorcycle in a fire back in the 90's but the memory will be with me til I die. Thank you for these videos and thank you for keeping it clean and entertaining. Safe travels y'all!!!🙂

I feel you there, my parents took us on a road trip me my brother and sister plus our cousin to Disneyland from Vancouver bc in Canada and my brother and I got into it a few times and my parents threatened to put us out in the side of the road if we didn’t cool it. Well we we didn’t and they did put us out in the side of the road and drive off. Somewhere near nehalem Oregon. We were stunned as they drove off. We knew were North was so we started walking north…having a convo about how we should have listened and maybe shut up when we were told. We walked for what seemed like an eternity but was probably 5 minutes. And boom there they were they had just gone up to the next turnoff and circled back to pick us up. Just enough time for us to figure out that we were being dicks.
We never did anything to piss of my parents after that…on the trip at least.
I heard a story a few years ago about some parents who did the same thing in the same area of Oregon.
But a state troooer happens upon the kids before the parents got back. And they went to jail for a litany of charges….the 80’s were a different time indeed.

14:39 My mom used to drive a Ford Falcon and this is exactly what I always wanted to do to it.
Seeing all these old cars really makes me wish I was born a few generations earlier. All the cars today look the same.We have a Mazda CX5 (Glorified Station Wagon) and I swear I've seen nearly the exact same car with a different grill with at least 5 different car company logos on it.
Also, your kids are amazing! Any of my nieces or nephews at that age would have been screaming for internet or wifi or video games by now. Hell, most of them still would be and they are over drinking age for the most part. The internet really has ruined our kids.
