- Here I show the construction of my favorite piece to date. I'm really proud of this one and it came out great. I used reclaimed leather from flooded couches. I also show how to make card board parts from scratch, which can be used in any number of projects. I taught myself the technique when building model rockets out of cereal boxes as a kid. I also show two different stitching techniques. Not sure what they are called, but they work well for what i'm doing here. I incorrectly refer to one as a saddle stitch which it's not. Any way, hope y'all enjoy.
What a great idea to use the blue tape to create a pattern! Awesome! Thank you!
A nice project. Thanks for making the video.
Now you've gone and done it. I'm going to have to make leather armor for my dog.
Wrapping in blue tape...GENIUS!!! Thanks.
Hey, man! Glad I could help!
hexadecimil I’m getting setup to make a leather fly rod tube for my pops and was wracking my brain over how to ensure a clean, tight wrap of the leather. Perfect solution. Thanks again!
Hey man, that's a great project! I love to hear about projects. What kind of leather are you using?
hexadecimil I’ve got a piece of single shoulder in 4/5oz
That sounds really nice. 4 oz. is gonna feel positivly bullet proof on the outside of a tube.
awsome, exactly what I was looking for and a perfect balance of detail. Plus the joint stich will work great for other projects too. Also looks great. :) thanks
thanks a bunch, Jet.
This video is exactly what I was looking for 😃 👍
I'm really gald my video helped you!
great video !
Nicely done. I dig.
Very helpful and informative. Thank you! Looks great.
Aww, thanks. I'm glad you liked it.
outstanding diy/from scratch video! had been trying to construct a tubular tool carrier from faux leather (too flexy & soft vs the real thing) & this one made it work as a working start.
what kind of tool(s) are you carrying?
hexadecimil... just the pronged hole puncher as none of the leather-specific tools work well with the vinyl leatherette. but then again the hole punching gets tedious because leatherette tends to close up with small sized punches.
This was great! Is the lower cap just a friction fit as well?
The lower cap was glued in place, if I remember correctly. Don't want that coming off.
How did you make the belt loop it would be nice to see that
The video was getting really long. All leather projects have a ton of steps. The belt loop was pretty simple. Just a scrap of leather cut to width and length and riveted through the whole thing. The only tricky part was backing the revits to set them way down in the tube. Got a peice of oak and clamped it to the table and put the tube over the oak. Then I had an something to put the little rivit anvil on inside the tube. Was still fiddly but it got it done. Hope this answeres your question
At 7:00 or so in, are you suggesting someone wrap their dog in masking tape to get a pattern for dog armor?
Daniel Duncan I'm being hylerbolic trying to say how versatile the technique is that you can pull a pattern from some complex shapes
Great video. I have been wanting to build a map case like the one you did here, except larger, to fit 7.5' topo maps. Excellent. What part of Louisiana? I'm in SW La.
54tlowry i live in BR. I've moved recently so i havent been able to put out any videos lately, but once i get my new, bigger shop set up, expect some new stuff. And thabks for the comment!
I'm in BR. would live to see what you make!
what tools would you say are needed to do something like this
Do you wanna build the whole thing from scratch? Or something less involved?
great job....
Leather Armor for the Cats and Dogs, yes.
How did you add the belt strap?
Just curious how the dog reacted to being wrapped in masking tape to create a pattern. LOL
You should call this how to make a RUclips video. Not only was the map case really nice the video was great. You actually talk and explained everything you were doing. Without stupid music!!
thanks!
I think ive followed instructions wrong. My dog and cat are taped together in the garage. They wont let me get it off
Ive wrapped them with 700 yards of thread. Its holding them still. For now... Plz respond.
How many tries did it take you to get that throw right at 5:55 lmao
like 3... tops
Was I the only one or was anyone else hoping the needle would slip and pop that thing on his thumb? 😂 Good video man!
Can't pop it. It's solid.
@@hexadecimil I have one of those showing up - whats it from - how to get rid of it? Also, how did you make pre-stitch holes in leather?
@@carpediem4413 It's a wart. Caused by one of about 12 strains of human papaloma virus (HPV) as all warts are. You have to get it frozen or cut off at your family physicians office. Mine doesnt hurt or bother me so its not a big deal.
@@carpediem4413 the holes were made with a pricking iron and a hammer, as is shown in the video.
Great but why wouldn’t you show how to do the stitch??? Useless if you don’t know how to start the stitching...!!!
I show the stiching at time stamp 8:28. Let me know if this is what you were lookong for.
@@hexadecimil Thanks for the reply. The video is sooo fast you can't see what you're doing, especially the very first section. This is the only video i could find on how to stitch around a cylinder in situe... If you could just slow it down for the first two or three turns, this would have been the best video on youtube. Love the idea too...
While id love to put another video in the pipe, I am super busy with other stuff right now, and don't plan on puting out any leather videos anytime soon. If I could suggest using the video option to slow it down at that part.
I'm not sure if you are familiar with that. I'm going to assume your watching on a phone. If so, when you tap the video, you'll see 3 vertical dots in the top right courner of the video with one or two other icons. If you tap those you'll get a menu that includes an option for playback speed. You can use that to slow the video down a pretty slow. Hope this helps you get what you need from my content. And thanks for commenting.
I know nothing, but I think it’s called pricking. You show how to thread a needle, yet you don’t show how you did all the holes for the threading which is one of the most critical (is it the same step as the butt cap?)
You are correct all around. I used the same pricking irons on all of the holes for this project. I don't show every step and every technique for every project because to do so would make every video no less that 2 hours long. Each video showcases certain techniques and glosses over the rest. This time it was building the tube (which is not a native skill to leather working) and making the pattern for the upholstery leather (which is the hardest part of all of the craft IMO).
@@hexadecimil thank you so very much for taking the time shoot and edit such an informational video, you’re a teacher, not just a RUclipsr
How much time did it take to do the whole thing
It took all day to do this project and some of the next day. But I was filming and it always takes twice as long if your filming. So id say 5 hours with a set up leather station all the materials on hand and full focus.
Awesome thanks
What size pricking iron did you use
pretty sure is was the 6mm
