#94: PNSO 2020 Miragaia (Rosana) Review

  • Erratum:
    I've mentioned elsewhere that geography isn't my strongest knife in the drawer and I think it's time I sharpen it! Thanks to viewer Bernardo Filipe, who pointed out that the map I used to show Miragaia is actually incorrect.
    There are two Miragaias in Portugal, the one where the actual dinosaur is from. The correct one should be the the actual village of Miragaia closer to the City of Lourinhã (aka the Capital of Dinosaurs of Portugal). The Miragaia in my video is a small neighbourhood in the city of Porto, and has nothing to do with the dinosaur except in name.
    Inicidentally, Bernardo Filipe is a really talented paleoartist as well. I love his black and white illustrations on Instagram. Look him up!
    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    I’ve used the word “beautiful” for many PNSO dinosaurs. But while in those contexts, there are laymen who would call me crazy, for this dinosaur, not even the most uninterested layman could disagree.
    This Miragaia is one of PNSO’s most beautiful pieces yet. It has the same quality of its previous stegosaur, Tuojiangosaurus, and far obliterates that of its previous Stegosaurus. PNSO has taken great creative licence in its conjecture in the shape of the plates and spines, while not neglecting the rest of the animal with a poverty of detail and texture.
    The proportions are very nicely captured, and what would normally be the showcase of this animal, the neck, isn’t lost in the splendour that is the array of plates. The result is a total package of beauty, not a one trick pony of plates. If there is a top 3 of MUST HAVES from PNSO, this certainly takes up one spot!

    I know this video is at the least 1 year old.
    But small fact checking.
    There's two Miragaias in Portugal, the one where the actual dinosaur is from.
    The true and actual village of Miragaia that sits closer to the City of Lourinhã (also know as the Capital of Dinosaurs of Portugal).
    The Miragaia you just showed on video its actually just a small neighborhood called Miragaia right in the middle of the city of Porto, that sadly has nothing to do with the actual dinosaur.
    Other than that everything you said is right! Great video.

      @@DinosDragons Sadly you must have mistaken me for another Bernardo...
      But I gladly appreciate your kindness regardless, but I will give you some insight on me.
      I occasionally volunteer and work with the Museum of Lourinhã, being a fossil preparator, been there for 3 years now. Prepared lots of pterosaur tracks, worked on a sauropod's foot, a nodosaurid and also on another local predator of the area Lourinhãnosaurus.
      But I really did enjoy the video you did on one of our local dinosaurs.
      "Excelente trabalho!"

    Another fantastic review!! And another one that might just make me change my mind about buying it. Miragia to me has always been so speculative with its form that I haven’t been willing to add anything of significance to my collection, but this might just be it thanks to you!

      I tend to resist the temptation to buy a model that is based on too fragmentary remains, unless it's an exceptional work of art and this thing is beautiful! You definitely won't be thinking too much of anything else once you have it in hand!
      Much of previous reconstructions seem to borrow from Dacentrurus, but there seems to be evidence that it's a different animal. The Costa 2019 paper is a most excellent read for a boring afternoon at about 120 pages long but makes a good argument for its validity. Also check out the Miragaia Project on Facebook!

    As someone who is Portuguese, i can only say that the interpretation of the name Miragaia is, at least, very colourful. In fact, my home town is Gaia, wich name comes from an old setlement, Calle, already ancient when the Romans came here. The city Gaia has borders with the city Porto (meaning Port, portus in latin), wich names combined, Potus and Calle are the origin of the name Portugal (Port of Calle, portus Calle, because that was exactly what it was, although some place Calle where the modern city of Porto is, although in an ancient Roman itinerary Calle is placed in the territory of modern Gaia). There's also a part of Porto called Miragaia, meaning a place from where you see (mira) Gaia, although the name of the stegosaurid comes from another land called Miragaia in the south. Anyways, the plates (splates, as a Portuguese paleontologist who is involved in Miragaia's study calls them) are supposed to be based on more recent material found.

    • @DinosDragons
      @DinosDragons  3 года назад

      Wow thanks Antônio! Geography has never been my strong suit, and you've painted such a clear picture that I can imagine it clearly. We tried contacting the paleontologist to ask his opinion of the plates, but unfortunately did not hear from them. The Miragaia project is the MG4863 specimen, but as far as I know that one didn't have plates. If you have any further reference on this, I would be very grateful!

    • @antoniorocha3967
      @antoniorocha3967 3 года назад

      @@DinosDragons Unfortunately, i don't have much on that, except for a comment from a Portuguese paleontologist in Facebook, regarding Pnso's Miragaia figure, where he replies to my comment about the figure being "wildly speculative" about the plates. And that was exactly what he claimed, that although the figure is not based on the latest reconstruction it is very accurate still, based on more material found. I'm not sure, but maby those comments are available on everything dinosaur's Facebook page, on the Miragaia's release fotos.

    • @DinosDragons
      @DinosDragons  3 года назад

      Unfortunately I've heard the same from other colletor as well. It's really challenging because in order to reduce warp they'd have to use a much harder material, but then that wouldn't be too safe. On the other hand like with the Tuojiangosaurus the spikes will keep in place better but are actually almost dangerously sharp.
