  • It’s been a while since we got an ankylosaur, let alone ankylosaurid from PNSO. After two marvellous nodosaurids - Gavin the Borealopelta and Isaac the Sauropelta - PNSO seemed to take a break from these armoured animals.
Now, PNSO is back… with another of these armoured tanks! And a relatively less popular, unknown one at that - the Asian ankylosaurid Pinacosaurus. But is PNSO’s latest ankylosaurid back with a BANG. Not just beautifully sculpted, with PNSO’s usual detail and faithfulness to the latest science, but vividly coloured to make a bold, brilliant, colourful statement, this Pinacosaurus is a must have for any ankylosaur lover!

After 88 years I am pleased PNSO not only released this Dinosaur but , did justice to it’s unique morphology . The Deeply keeled osteoderms and minuscule club points to a defense aimed towards maniraptoran hunters . Unlike the later Ankylosaurinae , who were preyed upon by giant theropods this one has armor covered ribs and forelimbs aimed at repelling kicks from sickle claws . The rear is also of interest for the great spines at the hips and those of tail base are angled towards each other creating a “ Kill Zone” for any hunter foolish enough to attack the rear legs . The shape and arrangement of the dermal armor is quite similar to a distant North American cousin Gastonia , who also contended with the giant maniraptoran Utahraptor . Despite belonging to the Polacanthidae their similar ecological niches yielded similar solutions .

It's always astounding how convergent evolution works. For me the most astounding example of this would be the evolution of the dorsal fin in cetaceans.
But back to Pinacosaurus. I have seen illustrations of maniraptoran attacks on Pinacosaurus. Indeed, Musee Studio offered just such a diorama, which I regret not knowing about when it first came out. I also completely missed out on commenting on the foreleg scutes, which has in fact been reconstructed in quite a few museum models. That's also a somewhat unusual feature I wish I'd talked about in the video.
I do have an awesome Gastonia, the one from Sideshow. One day I will have to do a revised video on it!

I honestly love this figure for several reasons.
Besides being a more obscure dinosaur that deserves more love, I love the striking colour scheme (especially since I’ve worked with thorny dragons before, they are beautiful little creatures) and the general unique appearance of this figure. I know that could be expected for Pinacosaurus but still. Definitely a must buy for me.
Hopefully we get more unique asian Ankylosaurids in the future, Saichania and Liaoningosaurus come to mind

    • @DinosDragons

You've nailed all its plus points! I honestly did not think I would like this figure as much as I did, even though I was expecting to to be a stunner. There's just something really loveable about this.
Saichania is a wicked looking specimen I'm surprise we don't have more figures of, and I would been very interested to see PNSO's take on Liaoningsaurus, and how they showcase its supposedly more aquatic lifestyle! Tarchia would also be a very impressive one to have!
It's so cool for you to have worked with these lizards. Hopefully you didn't get spiked often!

from djadochta formation there are also fragmentary remains of a big tyrannosaurid which might be either zuchenghtyrannus or tarbosaurus so pinacosaurus probably could come across a big predator, however we dont know how common this predator was in that formation and it may have been a rarer sight than surrounding and less dry formations

I'm starting to realise (and hear grumblings) that the earlier runs of PNSO releasess always have better paint jobs than subsequent ones. In fact sometimes, much better. I haven't monetized my channel and if I cared about numbers, I would have done a few things differently. For example, make my videos shorter and ditch the science and just focus on the toy, but that's not what I want to do.
I would be happier with a smaller number of followers, like yourself, who like my content, and know I'm adding value and happiness to them, than to have a lot of followers, but have to do things for the algorithm, that may not congruent with how I would like to share.
If there's any advantage I'd really be happier about with a bigger channel, it's that I can then help viewers with some kind of discount code! I believe most companies offer larger channels that kind of thing.

@@renantehitalada932 I too would have loved it if all my dinosaurs are 1:40 (I started with the Carnegie Collection series which were all claimed to be 1:40) and it was very nice to see how differently sized the dinosaurs all were when displayed together.
The problem is that there are many toys that would either be too big at the same scale (e..g the sauropods) or too small at the same scale (e.g. the dromaeosaurids, coelophysoids). Which means either you have Sauropods that are going to be not just expensive to sell, but also to ship because of the weight, and you have dinosaurs so small you can't see any detail, which would be a pity because then we would have lost the Wild Safari Coelophysis.
Consequently scale is something many companies have abandoned, and apparently enough people don't mind that they will continue to keep their scales inconstant. PNSO at least states quite clearly which models are scaled and which are not, so perhaps you could just get all the 1:35 ones you like 😁
