This is literally the most underrated Anthrax record. Consistently in rotation for years. Bush kills it. Really written for his range.

I'm a big anthrax fan and never really gave this album a listen. I'm gonna correct this mistake immediately.
Overlooked album. It has some good stuff on it. Worth an open minded listen.
You will not regret it. It's not perfect and has a slight ebb in the middle, but some of their best songs are on it.

Very underrated album with a bunch of hidden gems. Stealing from a Thief, Catharsis, Crush, Harms Way, Pieces. It’s a shame the distribution wasn’t there.
Killing Box, Toast to the Extras, Big Fat..
I'm giving it another listen right now for the first time in decades and I'm just not feeling it. The first four songs are good, not classic Anthrax but good, then the album just plunges into completely forgettable trash songs, 5 songs in a row are just boring, now I'm up to "Hog Tied" and this is alright....but its still not an exciting song. They just sound lost in 1998.
@@angryagain3801 To each his own I guess. It’s not a classic album or anything but I like a lot of the songs on it, and it’s clear they were just having fun experimenting and not worrying about the business side of things so much.

"Inside Out" is heavy as fuck! That song kind of has an "Only" feel during the chorus. That song will always be my absolute favorite song off of Volume 8.

I saw them on this tour. I've been to thousands of shows. Played hundreds myself. Pantera/Anthrax 97 is in the top 3 I've ever seen.
Was that the tour with Sebastian Bach? I went to that show in Akron Ohio, but don't recall the year.

@@brad9718 I once saw Soilent Green play in an illegal basement show in the Roxbury neighborhood part of Boston. Wild show, wild band. coal chamber...nah.
Caught that tour in Maine, probably the night before or the night after. Definitely a highlight in the many shows I've been to over the years. Definitely would've been better to be introduced to Seth Putman and company or better yet Soilent Green. Instead we got Coal Chamber.....what a weird time for metal.
Volume 8 is one of my favourite all time albums. Even the B-sides and bonus tracks were awesome.

Volume 8 is such a powerful record, my favorite record with John Bush. Every track is flawless and I'm so happy I was able to get it when it came out.

Easily my favorite Anthrax record. I played this album for years when it came out. Crush, Harm's Way, Big Fat, Catharsis, Inside Out. So many killer songs.
This thing flew under the radar, but it has some bangers on it... Crush, Catharsis, Inside Out... all are prime 'Thrax slabs.
This album brings back bittersweet memories for me. I had been living in Mesa, AZ for 4 years at the time, and the first years or so, the heavy music scene in the Phoenix/Tempe area was great, but then it began going steadily downhill in 1996 and by the time Volume 8 came out, everything had pretty much gone to shit and pop punk and ska had taken over both locally and nationally. And personally, I was going through a major depression over a girl I was in love with who rejected me and over my band falling apart. I was also going through an existential crisis thinking about the meaning of life, religion and all kinds of heavy shit like that. I remember sitting on my porch blasting this album, thinking about life and reminiscing about the early 90's. Even though it was only a few years prior, so much had changed for the worse.
I am a lucky guy. I have two copies of this album, the usa, and the japanese versions. Frank's song means a lot to me. My brother was gone at the same period of time. His name, Antonio, as Frank's brother.
The best from the "other" Anthrax...Bush just kills it in this...
He really does shine on this album.

Amazing album, and Bush crushes again. Big Fat, Stealing From a Thief, Crush, Hog Tied and Harms Way...every one of them on the top of my playlists.
This entire album is a shot of Piss and Vinegar.
I've been a fan since the mid to late-80s and I've learned more about the band in the last few weeks than in the last 30+ years. I love this series!

This may be my second favorite album behind Among the Living. And nobody even knows it exists.
There is not a single album I have ever owned that was played more than Volume 8. It spoke to me in a lousy point in my life. Thank you Anthrax and John!

We need Bush/ Thrax one more time
I know the history of the band during the 90's/00's but if you are a music fan, every album from Sound of white noise with Bush just carried that incredible energy where my benchmark is if an album sounds incredible and then the band tours it and just takes it to another level where you go into the album with a crowd who have all been through the good and bad days, then this is one of the most undersold classics in music. Sound of White Noise tour in the UK was to same sized arenas but a fraction of the crowd but the boys just played a blinder live and the balls on Bush's voice just made live gigs exciting again. Stomp 442 album and tour was even more potet and thanks to word of mouth of fans just needing a good time gig, same venues but more heads and buzz, with a new generation of metal fans loving the big energy,
Volume 8 album and tour just confirmed how damn good this band is live as the album/live experience was totally blurred. Even as a support act (which many times I've seen Anthrax live) they just raised the bar for the headline act to pull their balls out of their ass or be destroyed. Just loved the new tone and drive Bush's voice added to the bands roots. Can't work ut if they toured in the UK as support with Motorhead but it was one of the best, balls out best gigs I've witnessed for being in a crowd thinking that this could of been the best gig to have at the end of the world. Big love to this era of Anthrax.

Man, I could watch this everyday of the week, every month of the year.
I love this album. I wore it out with my friend in our senior year of High School. I remember seeing the video on Headbangers ball the new version. Inside out the twilight zone type video. It was awesome. It is without a doubt the most underrated album they have ever made. The riffs and Bush’s singing on the album were killer.
This is such a great record. I remember cruising to my record store after school one day and being like, “Wait, Anthrax has a new one?” I bought it and have never stopped listening to it. One of their most solid records, and people who say otherwise have not listened to it . Hard, heavy, aggressive, killer lyrics, goofy at times, truly an Anthrax record in that it does so much. I’m blessed I got to see them with Pantera in ‘97 in El Paso, but bummed I missed any Vol 8 tour because I’d love to hear every single song on this record live. Easily in their top 5 best.

I love this album. Have been a fan since 88 and loved the Bush era. There is just something so unique about this album. Every song is great.
Least favorite Anthrax album, but there are some really good songs. Lots of respect to the band for sticking it out and treading through the no fun 90s!

I was an 80s/90s Anthrax guy and seeing and hearing songs from this era is all new to me - it’s like a voyage of discovery
At the time Vol. 8 came out, I wasn't really into it. Didn't sound like the Anthrax I expected. Now that I'm older, I appreciate it even more because it didn't sound like the Anthrax I expected.

I bought Volume 8!!! On cassette lol. And true story: found a box of mix tapes I used to make and that cassette was in there! I thought all my tapes were gone. Somehow the mix tapes and Volume 8 survived!
CATHARSIS is the best song EVER by anthrax.
I‘m not talking about metal song but music wise it’s their BEST song EVER written to this day!!! Most epic ever!!!!

Superb song. I heard this album for the first time a while back when i decided to get all the albums i may have overlooked. This song stands out.
This is cool... I love CATHARSIS as well. That's Charlie playing the PETE TOWNSEND chords in the intro. He also plays the solo. It was tracked with his Les Paul Standard. Scott is obviously playing the fast downstroke intro on the right side.

Holy hell do i love that album. Alpha male is an absolute killer track.
Volume 8 is such a great record.......one of their best IMO. Such a shame the label folded and physical copies of it disappeared shortly after. I think Scott mentioned in his book that they tried to buy the music years ago from the label so they could re-release it and got nowhere. Glad it’s available on Spotify so people who missed it when it first dropped can hear it

My favorite Anthrax record - i listened to it again and again from 98/99 to when WCFYA came out in '04. Hell, i still put it on frequently. Absolutely love this one back to back. And the Dime stuff - hidden gems man.
It was absent from streaming for a number of years, so when everyone ditched their CDs i kept my old ipod around - just for this album. Thank you for making it.

Yes... it was right off of SAWMILL RIVER ROAD. I enjoyed the hell out of hanging there. We set it up cool. Pulled out all of their camo Marshall 4x12's. Made a huge wall of them. Charlie painted life-size images of the Simpsons on the walls.
I bought this when it first came out,saw a promotion in some metal mag. Anyway,love this album. Borrowed it to people at work and they loved it......but couldn't find it at store's.

What saddens/maddens me is that we never will hear these songs again live. Without Bush these songs except maybe Only are lost. They never did an album of Joey singing the Bush Era songs. Call it the Lesser of Two Virtues or something like that. I have two playlists on my Ipod the Belladonna Years and the Bush Era.

I saw Anthrax on this tour in Chicago at house of blues. Paul Crook played lead guitar for the show. It’s was so good. I got Charlie’s stick as well.
This is my all time favorite album from Anthrax! Every song was powerful. Heavy and uplifting. The bonus track was very powerful in it's own way too. If I had the chance to go back in time to see any live show ever, hands down, it would be Pantera/Anthrax late 90's!!

Volume 8 is amazing. It's right up there with Among the Living. In fact I'll put the opening 4 tracks up against the opening 4 tracks of any other album *ever*.
Volume 8 is my favorite and the best Bush Era album. Crush is a monster of a track. Pieces hits hard beautifully.

I'm still a bigger fan of the Joey era(s) music but this is probably my favorite album they did with John Bush. Plenty of good songs like Crush, Born Again Idiot, and Killing Box. Killer stuff.

I love this album! I think I first heard about it on the old Rock 103.5 in Chicago around the time the album was released. I bought it right away, and played it non stop for some time.
I don't give a fuck. Vol 8 is the best Anthrax record. Criminally underrated.

I really loved Vol. 8 as I didn’t care for Stomp 442 too much, lots of good songs on it including Crush, Catharsis and Inside Out. This a really good documentary, I’ve enjoyed every episode and I can’t wait for the next one.
Since release day I've at the least played Vol 8 in its entirety monthly, usually much more if you count the first 5 or 6 years haha! One of my biggest regrets was not being able to see Anthrax with John live. The videos floating around from this era help a bit but I imagine seeing it in person was something special
Since reading about the murder of Franks brother a years ago - there is a huge account of bands losing close members that arent always known. Love this series of videos, on Anthrax - probably the best of the big 4 to date!
If 'Persistence Of Time' was the underrated gem of the Belladonna era then 'Volume 8' to me is the one of the Bush era. There are loads of killer tracks on there. Great to hear Charlie mention 'Stealing From A Thief' as one of his standout tracks, that song has just got better with age. I mentioned it for one of the previous episodes, if that track finished off 'White Noise' instead of 'This Is Not An Exit', 'SOWN' would have been the perfect album imo.
Was aware of the 'Pieces' hidden track at the end of the CD but it was only a few years ago after seeing the 'Behind The Music' documentary that I discovered the meaning behind it. Heartbreaking stuff 😢.
As for choosing my top 3 off this record, there's a few songs that could easily have got in at 3rd place, such is the quality of the songs on there. But I'm going with:-
1 - Catharsis
2 - Harms Way
3 - Born Again Idiot.
'Harms Way' is probably my favourite vocal performance by Bush during his time with the band.

I was there! I had been living in Mesa, AZ since 1994, working shitty thrift store jobs and trying to get a band going, and I had pretty much given up at that point.

I couldn't wait for Vol. 8 at the time and I've always had a copy!! It was only out of print for a few years and usually if you went to enough stores could find a used copy.
My discovery of this album was made while perusing the used cd selection at our local Hastings (R.I.P.), circa 98-99. It wasn't even in the A section... lol. I saw the name Anthrax but didn't recognize the cover art. I thought, "What the fuck is this shit?? Volume 8?? Is this a new album, or something!?" Lol. Needless to say, it went home with me! Still have it to this day, along with a copy that has bonus tracks, plus the recent vinyl reissue. 🤘🤘🤘
