For those that are still a little lost, changing the katana from B rank INT scaling and E Rank STR/DEX scaling to E Rank STR scaling and A Rank DEX scaling was a significant damage increase because his DEX was significantly higher than his INT. Elemental damage types also scale off of certain stats, like Lightning scaling with Faith and Cold scaling with INT. This allows you to give certain weapons a hidden dual scaling through the ashes of war; you can add an Ash of War that scales with INT (Hoarfrost Stomp) to a weapon that scales with DEX (Keen Uchigatana). The Ash of War will use the base damage of the weapon and then further increase that damage based on stat scaling for its element, hence why Hoarfrost Stomp did more damage when he raised his INT even though his weapon doesn't scale with INT at all.
Thought lightening scaled with dex?
@@browniesbytes305 in all other fromsoft games holy and lighting were the same he probably meant holy dmg
@@browniesbytes305 When you add Lightning to a weapon the damage stats for the weapon scale heavily with Dex, but for whatever reason Lightning elemental damage appears to also scale with faith. Which is why I mentioned it like that that.
As Lipayy mentioned Lightning scaled more with Faith in previoius From Soft games.
@@ProSharpshooter Lightning damage scales heavily with faith, both in previous Soul series and Elden Ring.
Something else to consider, when applying an ash of war choosing a scaling that adds a element type like poison or blood then you cannot apply weapon enchantments or grease.
Also. Something I noticed last week when playing Elden ring as I was walking thru a cave with my stats screen up I noticed that as I stepped into water my lightning defense actually went down, subsequently my fire defense rose up.. very close attention to detail here from Fromsoft. And like I said I haven't seen or heard anyone mention this yet. This is actually major when implemented PvE luring enemies or bosses to be in a pool of water before tossing lightning spear at them to get a increase in damage same could be said in PvE. On the flipside you yourself standing in water when fighting an enemy or opponent using fire attacks so to boost your fire defense. A very interesting detail that can have some major impact when utilized proper or have devastating consequences when unknowingly factored in against you
I noticed that as well, I coated my uchigatana in lightning and f'ed up the invader that I encountered when I was running through a shallow river to get to this cave where there is a merchant you have to fight is located, forget it's name. Had a easier time in any wet areas with my lightning armament .
Nice observation. I'm a faith lightning user and another thing I noticed is that my lightning spells (Even the ones that are meant for a single target) have an AOE effect in the water hitting other enemies for less damage as it spreads out.
Very well put. We all should have figured but good find and thank you I’m gonna have to test this a bit.
Mechanic has been around since ds2.
Also works in rain
The silver tear helm you used to gain more arcane also has a nerf to your damage. I think this is important for a test like this.
Not even that big a dps nerf. Totally worth it for the stats and arcane buff imo.
@@n0isyturtle what are u on about. All the guy said is that the dmg decrease should be accounted for in a dmg test. Its not about it being worth or not.
Trian toot toot
As always your info is amazing. Love hearing the technical explanation and appreciate all the testing put into your builds
Me too couldn’t have said it better
If only everyone in IT tested their solutions before implementing them
@@OligoST that is a fact I appreciate it
Damn moxsy, I've been watching you for so long over so many games. I wanted to take the time to sincerely tell you thank you so much for all of your hard work, not just on this video, but for all the work you have put in over the years/games. You always try to be informative and fun. I always trust your information and really appreciate the work you put into your content. Keep up the good work man, you will always have my support!
facts
I already love this game, but your videos make me love it even more. Thank you so much for all this effort!
All blood ashes scale of arcane, the reason you didn't see more difference in your test is that the silver tear mask decreases your weapon damage at the same time as it boosts arcane. I hit the Albinaurics for about 2100 with bloody slash with a +24 weapon and 75 arcane (using flame grant me strength)
Damn wtf so for blood build I need to invest in arcane
@@ignacioespinoza8776 Well yes, particularly if you want blood ashes to do damage.
@@ignacioespinoza8776 Arcane also increases the Bleed build-up significantly, so more Arcane guarantees faster/more Bleed procs on your target.
I wonder, might you be able to test frostbite specifically as there seems to be some confusion over how it scales.
Appreciate the work you put into this! I was somewhat sceptical on your bl3 vids before, but the work put into this convinced me to give your channel another chat.
Hey Moxsy as always a thorough and awesome video, but just so you know, just because weapons have the same letter grades for scaling, it doesn't mean the scaling is *exactly* the same, or at least in past soulsborne games it didn't mean that, i.e. all A scalings are higher than all Bs, but not all As are equal amongst themselves
exactly. so whilst i appreciate all the effort that went into this even the very first test is kind of invalid because they're different weps, even though the both have the same numerical scaling the values could be quite different. one weapon at +22 could be a high B and one at +18 could also be a high B. meanwhile another at +24 could be a low B.
Yeah he should of used 2 different uchis not the other one. It would not be perfect still but would be better
Hey man, think you could help me out please? I was looking up the best faith scaling weapons I can apply an ash of war to and saw Sacred Uchigatana goes to Faith B attribute scaling.. yet when I tried it in game and apply sacred to the weapon it just keeps giving me D Faith scaling.. am I missing something here I don't get where the disconnect is?
@@itsbreezy2521 the scaling will increase as you level up the weapon. take it to the blacksmith at roundtable and pay runes+smithing stones to level the weapon and it will reach at least B scaling. however honestly i wouldn't waste your stones on a sacred uchigatana for a faith build unless you already have the bell to be able to buy unlimited stones. early/mid game play with winged scythe + sacred grave scythe, you will absolutely slap. later on you can switch to blasphemous blade and clap everything
@@marsh5953 Thanks fellow Tarnished! I thought this might have been it but couldn't see anything online that explained upgrading the weapon could also increase the attribute scaling, I'm trying to create a royal knights resolve build for incantations which is why the Uchigatana is pretty handy in this instance!
New viewer and thanks for all the info. Been watching your Elden Ring content as it's some of the quickest delivery and best explanations available. Didn't realize I wasn't subbed, thanks for your time man.
Thank you for all your input . Your videos are my main go to guide for my build right now for my confessor faith/ damage build .
Ok so when u put on the mimic mask it makes u do less damage read the description of the item but mainly bloody slice doesn't stack bleed I prefer other blood ash of wars if ur doing a arcane build and a weapon already has bleed then it's best to do occult affinity since that scales with arcane. Btw Some of the special weapons don't scale with arcane atm due to a bug/glitch. On the sword of night in flame I found if u have high int the weapon art performed better in damage
If you do Occult affinity then your bleed build up speed stays fixed, while for weapons with Blood affinity not only their base damage starts scaling with Arc, but also the bleed build up. Weapons with blood affinity and high Arc can reach 110+ bleed build up per attacks, which is MUCH better than the baseline 45/50/60 of the non-blood weapons.
Love the content! Keep it up, can't wait for wonderlands release!
Your delivery and clarity is very good. Thank you
Thank you my guy. Thank you. Now I can fix more my frostbite build. Even though I'm level 158 and running 27 intelligence and 30 faith now I know what to do. Frostbite is something so cool and interesting to me that I am having the blast of my life in this game after acquiring Zamor's curved blade earlier this morning. And yes I've been playing a lot lol. But thanks again man and keep it up. I'm subbing to your channel.
Excellent video brother. I theorized all this simply based on my personal game play & watching the damage of certain weapons continue to increase overtime a long with my stats. But I was hoping to find some hard evidence to confirm it, & here you are! Thank you for the time & effort
Thank you! You just cleared up my frustrations I had with this topic 🙏
dude thxs so much loved the vid u got my sub keep up the good work
Damn good quality video keep it up man sooooo many people just have no idea what scaling is! You explain it very well so..Brava
very goood info bro! thank you!
Thank you so much....I learned a lot...it's a bit clearer now.
This will help me understand better since I'm new to the game thanks a lot keep the good work🔥🔥
I was trying to figure out how this work today and now you make a vid about it lol thanks bro…👊🏼
Much needed information here. Couldn’t find this on google.
Perfect timing man, I plan to adjust my build tomorrow
Great work as always.
Dude was rewatching some of the earlier vids for my daily dose and boom new clip, nice!
Awesome video. My biggest question at the moment is how much the damage of an Ash of war gets boosted depending on the weapon type and AR.
That helped a lot, my first souls game so I needed it. Thanks
Greatjob moxsy! Really helps
Thorough and insightful, thanks!
The DON for borderlands and now Elden ring content! Keep it up dude!
Thank you so much this was a huge help I was very confused by stats and such . Scaling really confused me
thanks for this. A really good video explaining the really confusing stuff!
Awesome informative vid. A blood one would be just awesome. Thks for all of your hard work.
Tnx man, very informative.
Alot of the magic ashes of war, while boosting weapon stats does help them, they also still mainly scale off what the spell theyre based off scales on, so like moonveil, while dex helps it, Int scales it up higher even if its keen, because the ashes are considered purely magic atks
I thought you cant change affinity on unique weapons? Moonveil cant go keen or magic or cold, it always has B scaling in INT and DEX
Thank you for the info. A simple question to help me understand a little more if you would. Just to simplify things if I have a weapon that scales the same on dexterity and strength would having 50 points in either category be the same as having 25 in each as far as the damage it would go?
someone please answer this
This is actually pretty pog. Very useful.
I keep watching all of your videos, ig I should just give in and subscribe
That is REALLY helpful. Thank you
I like how ur top 5 videos are all elden ring guides, this game rly poped off on ur channel
thank you for the informative in depth video!!
Very helpful! Thank you!
Thanks, super useful 🙏🙏👌
Very useful, thank you!
Thank you sir. The explanation from your video is the best. Now i know which ash of war that will benefit the most from my build, because their damage actually come from their original scaling type.
You did a good job! Does this mean it is most optimal to use an ash that scales with my primary damage stat on a weapon that scales with that stat and set the ash to a type that scales with that stat? For example, a dexterity scaling ash set to keen on a dexterity weapon when dexterity is my primary damage stat?
this is what we all neded to know, thx for the vid :D
This was great please do more. Also trying to figure out a viable fth / int build around sword of night and flame. Currently about even between the 2 55 each . Though until I grab the death princes staff my incantations scale better because I'm using the golden order seal.
You gorgeous man. I needed this so much lol.
very informative, thx
Hey awesome video :)
I'd really like to know what how weapon stats affect your crit damage since there are normal and critical damage stats
Also how do Arcane, Faith and Intelligence affect your weapon damage: do they only affect elemental or also the physical damage?
I have a question. Does the faith scaling of your seal increase the damage of your weapon art attacks? For Sword of Night and Flame for example, would I benefit from having a higher faith scaling on the seal for doing more Dave with the flame attack?
Yes. For example, if a weapon art does holy damage. Faith scales Holy Damage.
Thanks man that was really helpful. Great video simple clear and precise. Just to clarify unique weapon arts that can't have ashes of war scale of the weapons scaling while weapons with ashes of war the weapon art scales with whatever damage correlates with whatever stat ex:Magic wtih Int ect.
Yessss, I’m so glad you’ve been playing this game too!
Nice work buddy
It looks like there is a relationship between the damage the weapon is doing and the damage the ash of war does. So it could not really matter if you select keen or quality etc. Changing the scaling of the weapon, changes the amount of damage the weapon does.
I don’t think AOW is worth the damage drop
Does the damage change when you put the same ash of war on a different weapon with the same scaling, i.e. frost stomp on a dagger with magic affinity, vs frost stomp on a claymore with magic affinity?
Cold is actually one of dual scaling elements, meaning it's int + str. Same with how lightning is dex + fth, etc.
This is extremely useful. What about Fire?
I actually checked and Hoarfrost didn't get any extra scaling from Str, but it did from Dex. Checked using the +5 stat talismans.
@@Tubercollosal both fire and flame art ashes don't seem to get scaling from any stat that I tried.
@@Newby1 I don't think they meant hoarfrost specifically. Cold* affinity does in fact increase STR's scaling along with INT on a weapon.
What about wind? I wanna make a wind build
Excelent info bro
i know nothing about this game, but listening to moxsy explain how to get more damage is always entertaining
Awesome vid thanks... Can we get a Mage build video bro?
Yo Moxsy, I used to like your content for BL3 glad to see you on Elden Ring. I see a lot of info that points to Failth increasing special damage on faith weapons. Does faith have more of an effect on damage increase than other stats? Keep up the detailed explanation mechanics research vids plz.
Thank you sooo much for this video
Bro... I love you, thank you
Happy to hear that the ashes of wars dmg type is the least affecting/scaling out of all possible ways to increase it's dmg, that means i don't need to run int build to get good dmg from hoarfrost stomp.
that's the frost axe ability, right ?? I was wondering how to make that stronger? but i can't find anywhere how to make the lt ability stronger like the sword of night and flame as well
Please do a bleed in depth. Bleed is the first build im running and would love to know all the mechanics
Hey, how did you changing your attributes points at any time? I couldn’t undo spent points on intelligence?
Very nice. Ty kindly.
Very nice thank you
this means that ash of war scaling is likely based off 2 things, weapon attack rating (thus upgrading your weapon and changing its scaling will change the damage output accordingly) and ash of war scaling, which seems to be a hidden function similar to weapon scaling, for example hoarfrost stomp probably has B int scaling (which is why it scaled damage even though your weapon had no int scaling)
moxie.... im a subscriber ... i need help with something... how do you put ash of war on magic weapons? like some you cant add ash of war on. like the wing scythe for example? what do you need to be able to put ash of war on it
What would you recommend for Bloodhound's Fang? I have mostly a strength/quality build.
What i want to know: is it better to scale solo on strength s for example or is it better to have more variety like int b str c dex d ???
I have a question. If you use a random ash of war for scaling or attribute changing do you lose the ash of war forever or do can u undo the process and get the ash war back?
Excellent testing!! Are unique weapons better than adding an ash of war to a weapon?
Is it possible to change the affinity of the Royal Greatswords ash of war. Or can you not do that for special armaments?
good guide!
So, how do I know what type of damage the ash is dealing? For example, I have bloody slash, and had no clue it dealt arcane. I have the icerind hatchet, and had no clue the stomp was an intelligence attack. Is there a detail on the display I am missing?
“as you can see plain as day” haha dude there is nothing plain as day in this game. but that’s why we love it. thanks for the info!
where can i find that armor? Love the content bro!
does this only apply to the special attacks? Are standard attacks changed as well?
Please make another test to verify whether base weapon damage is used to calculate the bonus damage the weapon receives or is it only based out of the scale multiplier and character stats/weapon type.
Thank you
Ok so if I’m using sepptku on my dual katanas and I have more points in dex than arcane, I would want to set the affinity to keen on both katanas instead of blood?
Very nice analysis, but I see two potential flaws: a) the dragon's resistances could play a role (like if it is resistant to magic it could make sense, that you deal more damage with a keen weapon which boosts physical damage) and b) your armor could play a role (like the Snow Witch Hat "Strengthens cold sorcery."). Not sure if that is of any relevance for your setup (I do realize you don't wear a helmet, don't know if there are other armor pieces with such bonuses), but these two factors should be taken into consideration, I think.
Regarding point 'a' I think since he's only attacking the dragon and comparing damage values when he modifies his own stats, it doesn't really matter what the dragon's resistances are since the goal of the experiment is to see what stat changes modify the damage numbers at all. If the dragon had really high magic resistance and we did something that increased magic damage but it did only a little bit more damage, we don't really care that it only did a little bit of extra damage, we care that the stat change made the damage number change at all.
@@rpielow I guess you are right. Although it's still a little confusing to me, the damage calculation in this game is pretty complex, I guess. To get a clearer picture, I did some further testing on the dragon with Hoarfrost Stomp (Uchigatana +23). In my case (Vig 43, Mind 30, End 18, Str 14, Dex 35, Int 68, Fth 7, Arc 9), Frost scaling outperforms the others a tiny bit:
Keen: 1446 (Queen's Crescent Crown --> +3 Int)
Magic: 1454 (Queen's Crescent Crown)
Frost:
Snow Witch Hat - 1458
Snow Witch Set - 1458
Queen's Crescent Crown - 1462
Then I switched to Dex 40, Int 63 and here are the numbers:
Keen: 1464
Magic: 1458
Frost: 1474
It's kind of surprising to me that Keen overtakes Magic, but Frost still is the winner. I feel like there is no way around testing it for oneself, with your stats, to find out, which is the best scaling in every case.
I would say their are three types of ashes of war. Spell , melee and buff. Ashes of war like lions claw is a melee ash and it scales directly off your weapon damage which derives from the weapons base damage and your weapon scailing . hoar frost stomp is a spell ranged ash which derives its base damage from weapon level only and since it’s frost you deal bonus damage from your intellect stat being higher. Buff ashes do what they do independently and only are changed by talismans. To add to the confusion some ashes are hybrids and/or the weapon swing spell animation can also deal base damage and throw numbers off quite a bit . The melee lighting slam ash scales the initial slam based on weapon level and weapon scailing while the lightning bolt that strikes the spot in the ground afterwards follows the spell ash rules above .
Interesting well done.
okay, so having a higher + on your weapon yields more damage on the ash of war, but is it because the + number is higher or because the per-hit damage is higher? for example, if you have a small dagger at +1 and a big ol colossal weapon at +1, will the bigger weapon deal more damage? essentially, if you want to maximize the damage on your skill, does it benefit you to slap it on the absolute highest per-hit damage weapon you can carry?
i'd test this myself but as it happens i made a faith build and can't carry any heavy weapons anyway lol
So let's say with a Mage build using hoarfrost stomp, should the affinity be magic or cold?
What do normal (white) ashes of war scale off of like that javelin throw ash of war and that sword wind attack? Strength or Dexterity?
So would glintblade phalanx still do good damage for a strength build of I use heavy scaling but have no intellect?
Thanks man
So would it be fair to say that certain AoW scales of certain stats? Frost with Int but Fire with Fth? Bleed Aow with Arc?
God stuff moxsy
I did a ton of tests to make the blasphemous blade better and the shard of Alexander, two finger heirloom, the fire scorpion, and marikas Scorseal all boosted the skill damage. Also activating golden vow and drinking a flask that adds fire damage all made it even stronger
Why does the first and sometimes second hit proc higher damage? This hints that a passive damage reduction is applied no?
I have physical and magic attack at 100 on Rogier's rapier. Does the magic mean my ash of war damage done or does it add magic damage to physical hits??
Curious to know what attribute fire damage is tied to? Might be worth a vid on all types of dam and they're related attributes
Iirc Fire scales with Int, but Flame Art scales with Fth
