  • A not so step by step look at cleaning the carbs on my YX600. If you've ever worked on these then you know getting these things removed and installed is a real pain in the butt. That made filming a challenge but I think I got some good content for everyone. Thanks for watching and consider subscribing if you learned something!

Great idea to use a white garbage bag to lay out your work. It makes seeing all the little parts a lot easier. And to those who don't know - those Vessel screwdrivers are JIS (Japanese Industrial Standard). They are almost the same as our Philips screwdrivers but just shaped a little different to fit better into those Japanese screws. A Philips head would have a tendency to gouge out the screw head under hard pressure.

Appreciate the comment. Those vessels are such good tools.

3 bolts remove to get the air box to move a little back. Then remove the 4 clamps on the air box side, they have little bushings on the screws so not to over tighten. Then push or fold the rubbers off the carb to help get the carb assembly out. Right hand side removal. Check the needle an seats with a magnifying glass. Look close on the rubber tips. A screen on the inlet of the seat. Drain carbs for storage.

Do you recall what exhaust you had on this bike? Looks like a 4-1 exhaust vs. 4-2 that came stock.

Not entirely sure, it came with the bike when I purchased it.

You didn’t have to synchronized your carbs? I took mine apart to replace the bowl gaskets. After that it ran good for a little bit and then started not running right

About a year ago, I did an eyeball carb sync while I had them out. Basically adjusted the screws until all the throttle plates looked about the same. I don't actually have the tools to do it properly but the bike has been pretty responsive so it hasn't been that big of an issue.

I gotta 85 xj700x, was thinking of cleaning the carbs this winter, any tips?

Patience, lots of patience. Soaking parts frees things up too, if they're stuck. I soaked parts in gasoline and in degreaser. I had to drill out two of the brass mixture screws the first time I rebuilt it, that was not fun, but took my time, bought a tap and fixed the threads afterwards and it eventually did go back together a few days later with new parts. Just budget more time than you think you need haha.

@@SkillCollectors Appreciate the reply and tips, I'm trying to do as much research as I can before I go into it. Patience is one thing I generally lack, I tend to rush things. Knowing this should help. Thank you for the video! I live in New York so as soon as the snow starts falling I'll have the rest of the winter =D. I even looked around on ebay for old carbs for my bike to practice on, didnt come up with much.

@@djlancer88 You got this. It's hard to find replacement parts for these old classics, sometimes impossible, so just another reason to take your time with everything. Everything could come apart with zero issues, you won't know until you dive in. If it's a part that doesn't seem like it needs to be messed with, sometimes it's a good idea just to leave that part alone, instead of opening up a can of worms. In any case, good luck with your project!

Hey, unfortunately I sold this bike, maybe try partzilla. Put your bike in and goto the parts diagrams and you can see how everything is configured.
