The 29th episode in a very long series about the American presidential elections from 1788 to the present. In 1900, the economy has made an amazing recovery and American is quickly becoming a superpower. William Jennings Bryan decides to challenge that anyway.
Feeling extra dorky? Then visit here:
    www.countingthe...
The 29th Presidential election in American history took place on November 6, 1900, exactly 81 years before my birthday. Oh boy, we got ourselves another re-match!
During William McKinley’s first term, the United States by many accounts became much stronger. The economy was back to being awesome, and the country had joined the “Imperial Club.” That’s right, America was now officially imperialist country, thanks to becoming involved in the Spanish-American War. The United States easily defeated Spain, gaining its colonies Puerto Rico, Guam, the Philippines, and even Cuba for a little while. Sure, there were some shady sides to this war and its aftermath, like the Philippine-American War, which raged on. But Americans were feeling pretty darn good about themselves overall.
The war represented American entry into world affairs, actually acting out what the Monroe Doctrine promised 75 years prior. Since then, the United States has had a pretty consistent role in policing various conflicts all over the world.
Anyway, so McKinley was popular and easily renominated. However, his Vice President, Garret Hobart, had passed away, and McKinley needed a replacement to run with him. One name floating around was New York governor Theodore Roosevelt. He was the former Assistant Secretary of the Navy under McKinley, and a somewhat reckless war hero of the Spanish American War. Thomas C. Platt, the New York State Republican Party boss, hated Roosevelt and wanted him out of the state, so he pressured McKinley to agree to let him to be his running mate. Although Roosevelt wasn’t too excited about the possibility of becoming Vice President, he accepted the nomination anyway.
Early on, the Democrats were leaning toward nominating another Spanish American War hero, George Dewey, who was the Admiral of the Navy and from Vermont. Dewey made a fool out of himself, however, so that ultimately opened the door again to William Jennings Bryan, who still had a large force of passionate supporters. Adlai Stevenson was his running mate. Stevenson was the first former Vice President to win re-nomination for that position with a different presidential candidate.
So it was another battle of the Williams! But let’s not forget third party candidates. By this time, the Populist Party, or People’s Party, had splintered. The faction known as the “Fusion” Populists again supported William Jennings Bryan for the nomination. But the “Middle of the Road” Populists nominated Wharton Barker, a publicist and investor from Pennsylvania, with Ignatius Donnelly, a former U.S. Representative from Minnesota and amateur scientist, as his running mate.
The Prohibition Party was reunited and it felt so good. They nominated John Woolley, a lawyer, reformed alcoholic, and public speaker originally from Ohio. Henry Metcalf, a businessman from Boston, was Woolley’s running mate.
There were several other third parties, but the only one I will mention here is the Social Democratic Party, a new political party that began after a large group of people left the Socialist Labor Party. At their first convention in Indianapolis, they nominated Indiana native Eugene Debs as their candidate, who was famously known as a national union leader and one of the founding members of the Industrial Workers of the World. Eugene Debs. Yep, get used to hearing that name in future episodes. The Social Democratic party nominated Job Harriman, a minister also from Indiana, as Debs’ running mate.
Again, it was a battle of the Williams, and this election was quite similar to the 1896 election, except this time the economy was in MUCH better shape, so Bryan’s call for Free Silver did not gain as much traction. Also, this time around Bryan vocally attacked McKinley’s imperialist foreign policy. While Bryan had supported the original war, he was against the continual occupation of the Philippines, saying McKinley had just replaced a bad Spanish tyranny with a bad American one.
Just like last time, Bryan traveled across the country giving many many speeches, but Theodore Roosevelt also did the same. Roosevelt was young like Bryan, and had a lot of the same energy. He would end up being an important force to reckon with in this election.

Super fun fact: during this time period the position of Vice President was seen more as a retirement position or just one where people's political careers would end. Part of why so many Republicans that hated Teddy wanted him to be VP.

To those wondering how Dewey made a fool of himself:
He said being president was easy because all he'd have to do is pass whatever bills congress would send his way.
He admitted to have never voted in a presidential election.
He said the U.S would likely see a war with Germany (German Americans were to the nation then what Hispanics are to us now, being the most significant and influential ethnic minority).
He infuriated Protestants by marrying a Catholic and giving his home he got from a veteran's program after the war to her.

At least this Adlai Stevenson won an election. The Adlai Stevenson of the 1950’s won the Democratic nomination twice and lost both times to Eisenhower. After twice getting whipped soundly he decided to throw his hat in again in 1960. Fun fact: Stevenson managed to garner enough support in 1960 to give the final nomination to Kennedy after a hotly contested convention where no nominee got the majority needed. Good ol fashion back room politics ended with Stevenson dropping out and supporting Kennedy which gave JFK enough support to win the nomination. Although JFK was forced to take on LBJ for Veep. After winning Kennedy returned the favor by naming Stevenson ambassador to the UN. There is a strong case to support Stevenson being just as much responsible as Kennedy for the peaceful end to the Cuba missile crisis. Had it been someone like McNamara or Kissinger in that role we would all be living in a nuclear winter wonderland right now.

wikipedia: Many suggested Dewey run for President on the Democratic ticket in 1900. His candidacy was plagued by public relations missteps. He was quoted as saying the job of president would be easy since the chief executive was merely following orders in executing the laws enacted by Congress and that he would "execute the laws of Congress as faithfully as I have always executed the orders of my superiors." He admitted to never having voted in a presidential election. He drew yet more criticism when he offhandedly, but prophetically, told a newspaper reporter that: "Our next war will be with Germany."Dewey also angered some Protestants by marrying a Catholic and giving her the house that the nation had given him following the war. Dewey withdrew from the race in mid-May 1900 and endorsed William McKinley.

The last year of the 1st century was 100 A.D., and the first year of the second century was 101 AD, and so, so the 20th century began in 1901. The year 1900 was unusual, though, in that, although divisible by 4, it was not a leap year, because, under the Gregorian Calendar reform, century years are leap years only if divisible by 400.

@@MeesterTweester, In the AD system at least. Let me just say that what if there was a year 0 in AD? Would you be arguing about it right now or is there something else involved here? Anyways other systems do have a year 0 and one system that does have one is astronomical year numbering. I'm not going to go into full detail on how it works but if you want more information about this system then I recommend you to check out this NASA link here. eclipse.gsfc.nasa.gov/SEhelp/dates.html But all you need to know is that it's a modified version of the AD system which just so you know it's not a full replacement for the AD system nor it is the AD system itself.
But it can be used to show an idea of what if the AD system had a year 0 just like all the other ones. That and it's also kinda arbitrary to not use a number which is so used a lot in math nowadays. Sure back then when the system was made europe didn't have a 0. That and the concept of 0 is much different compared to all the numbers that we use. But not only do we now have a 0 to use but also that it's in fact a number that we all use in math which means that we do have the potential to add a year 0 into the AD system.

He means the Gregorian/Anno Domini system. There was no year 0 to start the Anno Domini system and hence the first century spanned year 1 to 100, second 101-200, so on.
This also applies to decades and milleniums. Hence, the 2nd Millenium actually spanned from 1001 to 2000, and the 2000s decade spanned 2001-2010. It's not opinion, just math.

@@kothen4994 Well I don't know. I mean every year always starts a new decade, century, and millennium (although for the purposes of this comment it's better to talk about centuries) and then again the years 1900 to 1999 can be considered to be part of a century called the 1900s century or any year that's a part of the 19xx group and the years 2000 to 2099 can be considered a part of a century called the 2000s century or any year in the 20xx group. And if you're using the astronomical year numbering system which I mentioned in the paragraph above which has a year 0 then it makes sense to have these years be 100 years respectively.
You could consider these years as part of the 20th and 21st centuries respectively but I think it makes more sense for the AD system and not the astronomical year numbering system to use the xxx1 to x100 grouping of years due to the whole ordinal nature of the AD system (ordinal means ordering things in a sequence like 1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc) in which it makes more sense that a century called the 21st century starts in the 1st year in 2001 (even if 2000 and any other year of or that matter can be more acceptable to start the 21st century there).

In the AD era anyway. Why do I have to say this everytime? I mean there can be a year 0 and there are systems that do have a year 0. It's just that because of the fact that AD was made during the time when the number 0 wasn't as well known in europe as it is now. So because of this that's why the most popularly used year numbering system in the would right now doesn't have a year 0 compared to other systems of it's kind.
However it doesn't mean we can't have one however. I mean look around us. We use the number 0 all the time.
So we do have the potential of adding a year 0 into the most popularly used year numbering system in the world. One idea is astronomical year numbering or AYN for short. I'm not going to go into full detail on how it works but if you want more information about this system then I recommend you to check out this NASA link here. eclipse.gsfc.nasa.gov/SEhelp/dates.html Anyways all you need to know is that it's a modified version of the AD system which just so you know it's not a full replacement for the AD system nor it is the AD system itself. But it can be used to show that since every year always starts a new century and that it's arbitrariness was of course maybe by humans and that you can indeed start the 20th century in any year you would like including the year 1900.
It's just that because I wanted to give the 20th century and a another century called the 1900s distinction between each other, I decided to have two different start dates for these centuries. 1900 started the 1900s (century) in AYN and ended in 1999. The 20th century of the AD era started in 1901 and ended in 2000. I hope that you liked that Idea and I also hope that I was able to share to you that you can in fact start a new century in any year you would like and that you can also start two different centuries in two different years that being the 1900s (century) in 1900 and the 20th century in 1901.

Political parties change platforms all the time, in order to appeal to a wider base or to reflect the changes that the American people want! The Democrats started as a pro democracy populist party that wanted to increase executive power, then they became a party intent on expansion out west and gained support from a lot of slave owners, then they shifted their focus towards classical liberalism, non interventionism, and free trade, then they became a populist progressive party under Bryan (this video) after to progressive era they refocused to classical liberalism, under Roosevelt they adopted much more social democratic policies and shifted their view on civil rights, under Truman, Kennedy and Johnson they became the civil rights party, and under Clinton they took their modern form as an economically and socially liberal party.
