Everyone needs a Tubbs as a partner...best cop partner in TV history. Perfectly played the B Cop, but was individually strong enough to stand alone if he had to. Great show. Hackman deserved exactly what he got.
The scene where he is inside his boat and Tubbs gives the news that Caitlyn was pregnant is when the old melody from "Evan" plays in a heartbreaking swell of music.
Real Florida DEA agents and narcotics cops 👮🏼♂️ said Swietek & Zito were more like the real UCs who did buys, street deals in Miami. The hair, beards, sloppy clothes.
One of my favorite scenes in the show depicting depression, or a feeling close to it, alongside how they portrayed Tubbs' sadness for losing his former lover, son and brother. It was mature, respectful, way ahead of its time and few media would see the male protagonists in such positions. I also give much credit to the work of Don Johnson and Philip Michael Thomas.
Miami Vice, Delta Force & Top Gun Inspired Me To Enlist In The Navy In 1986! After 21 Years Of Service, Retiring & Working In The Private Sector As An Investigator It Was Great! Miami Vice Forever! 🇨🇦🇹🇭🇯🇵🥷🏿⛩️🔱🇨🇷🇯🇲🇲🇴🇭🇰🇧🇭🇲🇾🇰🇷🇸🇬🇵🇭🇬🇧🇹🇹🏴🇩🇪🇫🇷🇪🇺🇨🇴🇰🇪🇲🇰🇹🇷!
1. The music used by Jan Hammer in this scene... 2. Don Johnson and Phillip Michael Thomas... 3. The Dark Red special effect used when Rico is alone at the top of the boat. 4. The Dark Grey special effect when Rico tried to speak with Crockett at the end of the scene.... 5. Everything was PERFECT in this scene.
And the little slow motion at the end of the scene with a fade-out, as it often happened. I loved that little addition, very representative of "Miami Vice" as well.
Don Johnson deserves more credit for his acting than he gets. I often wondered why Caitlin was never mentioned again. When Angelina was killed, everyone went to the cemetery. Even when Sonny went to visit his son, Caroline never said she was sorry to hear about Caitlin. It was as though she never existed.
Probably afraid to open fresh wounds. It was a different time, then. Men, especially, didn't share their feelings, sometimes not even with those closest to them.
The original version of this music from Jan Hammer was originally heard in season 1 episode “Evan” as Sonny and Rico have a talk. Thus, the released version (heard in this season 4 scene) on Jan’s “Complete Collection” was called “The Talk”. 😎
Thank you man! I didn't notice it. For some reason I like the original versions Hammer did. His re-recordings on that Vice album sounded slightly different enough, even though he did some good work on expanding these little instrumentals like for Candy. Man i forgot how powerful the acting was in this scene!
This scene was devastating 😢..just broke my heart seeing Crockett suffer and Rico trying to navigate between consolation and telling the truth that could send Crockett into a worse emotional tailspin..this was hard to watch.
I loved it when the dramatic and emotional scenes ended with a gradual slowdown along with a fade-out, which was one of the visual signatures of Miami Vice: 4:52
I like how the director George Mendeluk incorporated Rico's footsteps on Hammer's synth score in this scene. You can here the apathy in the paces and sadness for his partner. Reminds me of more artistic European features from 1960s.
A huge thank you for putting this type of more heartfelt clips. Sometimes, when I wanted to emphasize the emotional and dramatic side of "Miami Vice", people looked at me with perplexity, because some people only saw in this TV show the fashion side, pastel colors, nice cars, etc. With this type of excerpts, you prove the more sensitive and captivating side of Vice, which is one of the reasons why this show is still relevant today, even decades later.
I totally agree with your comments .I enjoyed MV for Sonny's lifestyle he's loves and those night drive scenes.andvhow the music complemented this.So for me it was all about the emotional side
Even when he's disheveled, in dirty clothes, and here, given the impression he skips showers, he still looks good. I can't even wake up after 8 hours looking half this good 🤣😭
This is one of Miami Vice most intense episodes from its later seasons. This showed that there was still promise in continuing the series and building on the Crockett & Tubbs relationship which is central to the show's success. Unfortunately the filmmakers behind these last 2 seasons screwed the pooch after getting cancelled by the network for poor ratings just scrambled to get the show finished and ended up sacrificing the quality of stories being told. If the network had not sidelined Executive Producer Michael Mann, who had big plans for taking the show into the 90's, the show could have lasted another 3-5 years joining the likes of long running shoes like Magnum PI and Hunter but alas it was not to be.
Magnum was the Saturday afternoon casual, Hunter was the Saturday night casual, but Miami Vice was something else, the G of our Thursday nights that's when it aired in our area.
Sometimes I think it's better it ended when it did. Miami Vice WAS the 80's. It was everything 80's all in one package. Many years ago, I was in my late 20's, and a young man, middle school age, asked me what the 80's were like. I told him "Watch Miami Vice, that'll tell you most of it. The parts that matter, anyway." To push it into the 90's, I don't think would have worked. I think Home Improvement may have been the show of the 90's. As cop shows go, the 90's belonged to NYPD Blue, a show right up there with Miami Vice. There's a reason I have both on DVD.
Don Johnson was the issue. He almost left after season 2 and was the reason there wasn't a season 6. NBC was willing to continue it. To my knowledge the ratings were always solid.
@@markmorris76 They were getting smashed in the ratings because they were up against dallas, and because the show became so dark the network didnt see any use in continuing it
This was a tough time in my life. Losing Caitlin was hard. Drowned my sorrows in whiskey…got my shit back together and took care of Hackman once and for all.
That was Ferrari on the phone with the quote for new shocks , struts ,bushings and tie rod ends , new brakes, valve adjustment and U joints ..............sonny ?
I really like Phillip Michael Thomas in this scene. Like how he stands on the deck contemplating how to be there for Sonny, who is deep in grief. PMT is a good actor. Check out the movie Sparkle
Being a cop is a hard job. I have a friend who's a cop, and the stories I hear. Imagine being hired to do a job, take an oath to protect, and then have elected officials tell you not to do your job.
Men look men , women look women. No overgaining figures, no fillers, BROWS, Botox etc. normal lights, true emotions, normal speed of fights and shoots, normal angle of filming…. I guess we made wrong turn somewhere.
@ Gabriel Leao and Anto Erickson Thank You for reminding that Tubbs has been through as much loss (if not more) as Sonny has and is uniquely suited to discuss his depressed feelings with him. Through the course of the series run, Tubbs has endured the loss of his brother, Rafael Tubbs [S1 E1 Brother's Keeper], his ex-lover Valerie's sister [S1 E16 Rites of Passage], and his other lover Angelina Calderone and his son Ricardo Calderone [S2 E22 Sons and Lovers]. {BTW...the assumed death of his son Ricardo Calderone is a plotline that I believe the writers should have pursued in S3 E19 The Afternoon Plane and they failed to do so. Oh well...) Miami Vice--Greatest Cop Show EVER!!! FAN FOR LIFE!!!
What an episode. I always thought, how much could this guy take? His wife is murdered, Theresa is ripped from him by addiction, and his girlfriend in Yankee Dollar dies in his arms.
-The thing that stuck with me forever about this TV show was its authenticity, something you rarely saw in TV shows of the 1980s. I was 12 years old when this TV show aired. Being a not very happy child, knowing that life is not always positive, when I listened to this series, I said to myself "Finally, a series which is not in the fake, which is true". In spite of the very present fashion side, often in this series, almost all the finales of the episodes ended badly, the bad guys won, and whether we like it or not, it is the reality; often the bad guys have the last word, and it is often why we can be unhappy in this life, and this tele-series had the emotional intelligence to note it, which made us feel more understood, less alone in this more realistic observation of life. This made room for a rare emotional involvement in a police series, with great musical choices to support the scenes, the emotional intensity of actors like Don Johnson, the editing work that was striking, the outstanding contribution of producer-director Michael Mann, it is no wonder that this series is spoken of as an essential reference, even today.
Unbelievable how Miami Vice only lasted 5 short Seasons while cheap toxic cancerous reality TV shows like Survivor and Big Brother are allowed to be renewed year after year for two consecutive decades now. SMH
This episode, made me very sad, and I suffered, with my beautiful gentle Sonny´s pain, over the loss, of his loved wife Caitlin, and the baby, she was pregnant, from this beautiful MAN!! and she never had the chance, to give him, the good news!!ith
For past few weeks or like a month and a half, have only been seeing clips from Season 4 and Season 5, but what about Season 3. There are so many good episodes in Season 3 like Good Collar, Duty and Honor etc., which needs to be added bcoz there's more to Crockett's life than being depressive or being a bad guy
I think that cross is the one Hackman gave him after Sonny got tricked into clearing him for the murder of his former partner, he'll be getting it back soon enough.
The vibe of this show was topnotch. The acting was real and gritty. Sonny and Tubbs were perfect partners. The 80's will be missed!!!
Tubbs is such a great friend. So understanding.
This show had the BEST cinematography and atmosphere of anything before or since.
Still watching because of its uniqueness. I can't travel to Miami because of the pandemic. UK based. Vice helps the blues.
The best music too. That's what got me hooked on this show.
Beautiful awesome performance...
I hope you get there when you can.
Back when Michael Mann was good.
This show was intense but the soundtrack was pure fire❤️🔥
Indeed! 😎
Yes
I vividly remember this.
This was so sad and deeply hurtful
The shot of Tubbs on the boat is classic.
It's a beautiful shot.
Everyone needs a Tubbs as a partner...best cop partner in TV history. Perfectly played the B Cop, but was individually strong enough to stand alone if he had to. Great show. Hackman deserved exactly what he got.
All due respect to Tubbs but having Elvis around at that time might have helped too. :-)
IMO, Tubbs was the better cop
For years I thought Hackman was played by well known character actor JK Simmons. 🎭 . It was a different person.
Jan Hammer's musical genius captures the feeling of this scene perfectly.
The scene where he is inside his boat and Tubbs gives the news that Caitlyn was pregnant is when the old melody from "Evan" plays in a heartbreaking swell of music.
Hammer is a genius, but in fact is the opposite what you say.
The scene capture the best of hammerd song it was made for this song

The same with Theresa, we never heard if she fully recovered from her addiction
