- Back in 1987, The Washington State Department of Transportation drove north on SR-99 and recorded video to document the highway. This was part of a project that photographed/videotaped the states highways every couple of years. This video now resides at The Washington State Archives who were kind enough to share it.
Approximate Timestamps:
Entering Des Moines: 18:00
Entering Sea-Tac: 21:15
Entering Tukwila: 28:41
Entering Seattle: 39:00
Viaduct: 46:45
Those are antique 1950s Westinghouse Type OV-20, vertical version and they are remote ballast and uses 400 watt Mercury Vapor Lamps, and they are spanning across WA-99 from pole on one side of the street to the other pole across the street, but today, the LED street lights are stretching along WA-99 in Federal Way which the population is more then 100,000. Federal Way was incorporated as a city in 1993.
This is so fascinating to watch, you are literally driving through my memories! 🥰
Take me back amazing how some things changed so much and others stayed the same
This was filmed the day before I took my first ever flight in a small plane. Great memories of riding the Metro 174 along Hwy 99 to Seattle.
I remember the 174 which was replaced in 2017 with Metro route 120 from Seattle to tukwila transit station then Rapid A line will take you up 99 to the federal way station.
Blast from the past, I remember the 174 as well, took it from Des Moines to Seattle in the late 80s...
Took the 174 a lot to go from 260th to Sea Tac Mall. Good times as a kid …. Such an adventure to travel that far alone to meet friends ! Haha
It's so weird. So much has changed yet it feels all the same. I spent a lot of time at that DoubleTree hotel off 188th St.

I’m only 44, but this makes me feel old
I drove this exact route today synced with this video.Amazing how different sea-tac looks and area has grown from trees to apartments the drive in at the 17 min mark is now a lowes some of the major things like fred meyer and just about every gas stations fast food places are in the same spot . They sure didn't belive in sidewalks back then lol Like being in a time machine.
Really cool I was raised in SeaTac at the apartments to the right of 99. Brought back memories
Wow, I always associated Des Moines with Iowa, not Washington state. I guess there aren't enough city/town names to go around. :)
The difference is that in Washington, they pronounce the "Moines" just like it's written. In Iowa, they don't pronounce the S.
Feels like I went back in time to 1987 lol 😂 today it’s 2022
Cool to see these vids. What changed, what's the same 35 years later.
Too many things to list on both ends. I travel this a lot
That old taco bell sign, the newwest motel, i keep missing junctures because its all changed so much like a time worp flying backwards
Had seen a RAX restaurant they been out of business very long time
Loved fed way just not the neighbors
is this from a map maker? like his job is to make street maps?
It's from the state department of transportation.
It was darker back then wasn't it?
Do you have Minnesota
Unfortunately I do not.
