And it's too late, baby, now it's too late
Though we really did try to make it
Something inside has died
And I can't hide and I just can't fake it
Oh no no no no (no no, no no)

This was "Album of the Year" when I graduated High School in 1971. I'll be 70 before I know it, yet this song STILL takes me back to a very bittersweet time in my life! An incredibly special "Best Friend' (whom I'm still "Best Friends" with to this day, albeit separated by 3000+ miles), cruising in my '71 Mazda RX-2 and paying just 25 cent a gallon for gas, a girl I was MADLY in love with, (who died all too young from a brain tumor), all the while living in a very tumultuous and emotionally destructive home environment that was 'fueled' nightly by all too much alcohol. To quote from Dickens' "A Tale of Two Cities", "It was the best of times, it was the worst of times..." Memories that cause me to smile through my tears.....
That is an awesome, AND sad tale about the girl. Now... tell us an upbeat story, about the woman who gave you 5 kids, and how you wouldn't change that outcome - even if you could go back in time and prevent the death of a girl you once had feelings for.
I had many girlfriends since I was a kid, and I loved everyone of them (even though moving every few years, because my dad was in the Navy... took me away from them). I wish I could get in touch with every one of them, just to see how they're doing today, but I only remember their first names... so it isn't really possible (we'd also be in our 50's, now... who knows if all of them are still around?!).
May is Brain Tumor Awareness month 🤍 Sorry to hear about your girlfriend and your home situation.
DadBradTo5 Go Class of ‘71 what memories !what a year !
@@googleaccount1860 Wow! How 'prophetic' as I did marry an incredibly GREAT gal who has given me 5 wonderful kids, + 2 'Bonus Kids' that she was raising on her own when we met. I would have changed 1 thing about that though, in that I wished we'd met 10 years earlier, so that I could have hopefully averted the damage caused to her 2 kids (NOT her fault) by not having a dad around . Thanks for the reminder to be THANKFUL for what I HAVE been blessed with!!
I wish I was a teenager in the 60s-70s...I am in this era
I'm a 47 year old construction worker and I heard this song for the first time two years ago and I cried. I was alone in my truck, driving to work, so I had time to dry my eyes by the time I got there and told everyone that I was doing great, even though this song tore into my emotions!
Beautiful, love what you wrote , & publicizing it - takes some guts. ❤️ I haven't been able to get this song out of my head this past wk, (my not so subconscious at work, no dout), so just listened to it here for 1st time in 20+ yrs. I can't think of a song w/a higher emotional impact that nails the sorrow & loss of falling out of love more poignantly.

This is simply the most emotionally intelligent break up song ever written.

I stopped breathing and every hair on my arms, legs and back of my neck stood.
I was four years old. Have read about that time & the aftermath for those who served.
I might be over the pond in England, but to title another of the amazing Carole King's songs from 'that' album, 'You Got a Friend' - David.
I'm 74 years old and still love hearing her sing reminds me of love
This is the saddest realest song that I've ever heard. Almost everybody has gone through this and it hits the heart hard.
Another song that I could relate to in that sense would be the song "At Seventeen" by Janis Ian. The lyrics to that song basically just has Janis pouring out her emotions of never being accepted by the popular crowd when she was in high school.

@TonyTee79 Amazing song.
Going through it now.. sad.
YUP!

10 seconds into this and I'm convinced this is some of the best music ever written
Carole King is a prolific songwriter. She spent the 60s writing hits for other performers at the Brill Building.
Amen to that... BTW... I actually KNEW Diane Warren in school.. still like Carole the best. 🙂

The music industry just doesn't make musicians like this anymore.
Thanks for everything, Carole King.
THEY NEVER DID.
They don't accept artists like this anymore. Ms. King definitely made made herself
🤣🤣🤣
THE ASSHOLES IN THE MUSIC INDUSTRY NEVER DID MAKE MUSICIANS LIKE CAROLE,...HER VOICE IS STRICTLY "GOD GIVEN" PERIOD.
Yes you are correct. To my knowledge Carol, Joni Mitchell and the other women songwriter singers of that era never ever wore revealing clothing, had dancers behind them and pyrotechnics on the stage when they performed.
They just walked to center stage and performed. A lovely and grand time to be young and alive.

God bought us back together and we got remarried again we were married for 54 years. Iam 82 years old now and my beloved husband has gone to be with our havenly father. And today one off son's came up the stairs and he was hearing music on he's phone and they were playing that song. I hadn't heard it for a long time and it bought tears to my eyes.

In 1971, in L.A. at 18 years old, and enjoying this tune before departing for Southeast Asia. Now at 71, Carole King's song still one of the best sentimental songs that reminds me of love lost.
If you are ever asked 'what is a classic' the answer is simple: A song released 47 years ago which is as fresh today as it was then.
Alexis Mandrake man, you can say that... I actually believed it was from 2015 or some...
47 goddamn years ago
An entire album filled with classics.

it sounds like modern indie i thought it was recent!
Thanks Mom. I'm 60 now... you're gone..... but you turned me on to some GREAT music!!!

No one should feel awkward about enjoying this music. It expresses emotions we all have.
For sure Mary. I heard this song when I lived in Berkeley Ca at the Family house on Addison... I went to buy the album at Tower Records.
We don't have this kind of songs today, but we still have the feelings, so these songs are still very relatable .
My mum still has this record🥰 I remember she used to play it. In 1971 at age 21 I heard this song for the first time and I was a Carole King fan for life. I'm 74 now.
In 1971, I was a 7 year old kid listening to my mom playing this album. This song and the other one , "I feel the earth move under my feet, I feel the sky tumbling down, I feel my heart start to trembling, whenever you're around...." lol
This song played in my head for years. It’s amazing what the old songs can do for the soul.

One of my happiest memories, my dad, singing along, key perfect. Brought years to my eyes
I bought this album for my dad a few years ago he said it was one of his favorites, he passed away a week ago. I never cared or listened to it, when he was dying I wanted to play some music he liked, I remembered this and remembered buying it for him. I played it and fell in love with her. I was a student teacher, I sat in my car full of trepidation before I stood in front of the class to teach them English.
This tune played as I summoned the courage to walk into the school.
I am now retired and 68 years of age and recovering from surgery for cancer.
I ended up teaching troubled lads in Liverpool and had the privilege to be best man at the wedding of one of my lads who made a success of his life.
Unfortunately I stood at the graveside of one of my lads who was out of reach and took 8 bullets to the chest.
This tune will always resonate as I embarked on being a part of the best profession on the planet.

And I just can't fake it, oh, no, no
It used to be so easy, livin' here with you
You were light and breezy, an' I knew just what to do
Now you look so unhappy, and I feel like a fool
And it's too late, baby now, it's too late
Though we really did try to make it
Somethin' inside has died, and I can't hide
And I just can't fake it, oh, no, no
There'll be good times again for me and you
But we just can't stay together, don't you feel it, too?
Still I'm glad for what we had and how I once loved you
But it's too late, baby now, it's too late

The older I get, the more depth and sadness I realize Carole is portraying in this gorgeous song. I certainly didn't "get it" as a teenager in the early 70's when she released it. Hadn't experienced life yet and the odd mixture of bliss and agony that come through the years that we all end up living....

Right there with you.
I got this album not long after it came out, mostly for "I Feel the Earth Move," since the single had come out right before the 1971 Sylmar/Newhall earthquake, and became an instant hit in L.A. I loved the entire album.
I brought it over to my dad's one afternoon, and he enjoyed it as well, and some years later confided to me that this song was the one that he felt captured the ending of his marriage to my mom most perfectly.
Interestingly, the song that always reminded me of their split was "Overs," by Simon and Garfunkel, but I'm not sure that he had even heard that song, much less knew it.

Nothing to be scared about listening to this strong jam in front of no body. I’m a real man with real pain and this gets me by💪🏾
Melodically, this song is epic. Lyrically it takes you on a journey with a woman realizing the end of her romance within three minutes. This is an incredible realization of a breakup song. She goes from being stuck in bed, to realizing they don't have any fun anymore, to accepting the end within the context of the song. Even the answer vocal goes from "we can't make it" to "we can't make it NOW." This is a masterpiece by Carole King and a unique song in it's context. So many emotions within four minutes, not to mention amazing chords and musicianship.
For sure. We definitely had some great music back in the day...stands the test of time.
@Augustus Blake no, keep leaning into it. You're heading to worthy places
Very well put. What strikes me most about this piece is how Carole is not a piano virtuoso by any means, but a SONGWRITER who knows how to put a lyric to chords and melody with the best of them, and to convey all the emotions within. I believe Toni Stern wrote the lyric. IMHO this is one of the top pop songs of all time.
So well expressed, thanx...

Every song on Tapestry is a hit. She is a true artist.
Interesting, in this particular case, not the best song to listen to if you are seriously depressed. But one of the great songs ever, about Neil Sedaka?
Me too
This woman was beyond multi-talented. Great song writer for so many great entertainers and for herself, producer, as well as talented musician and singer.🎉❤
Timeless classic her voice is bountiful and stunning
A favorite of mine
True to that , classic, i just can't stop listening to this song 🤗🤗🤗🤗😍😍😍😍😍
She can barely sing. I suppose you like Janice Joplin's voice as well. Great talent though.
Thank you so much dear, where are you texting from?

I love the part where she sings "There'll be good times for me and you, but we can't stay together don't you feel it too? Still I'm glad for what we had and how I once loved you"
Benevolence, grace, compassion, reality not blame
..all those, yeah, but still the sting of her singing it to him.
Thank you!

Still
@@joecalleros1359 hello fellow Calleros where are you from ?

Want to know what the 70's sounded like? Here ya go...
JAMES ROCKFORD............................GREAT CHOICE !!!!!!!!!!!
There was nothing romantic about the 70's. Lots of tough times for lots of people. But the music? Sounds as good today as it did then. This song can't be remade. Estefan tried, but you can't really remake a perfect song and this is a perfect song.
Noel Taylor Exactly, everyone praises the era they grew up in and completely ignore the millions of people that suffered during that same period outside of their childhood suburb.
@@capitaoalcir thought about that show.
Amen, brotha
Pure and simple, melodic and timeless. Among the greatest albums ever.
It’s a beautiful song
Every song on that album was beautifully written and sung. Amazing Carole King.

One of the greatest albums of the 70s too
@the middle man Yeah most of us on here will be long dead by then..lol
the middle man The 1900s was a different millennium then 2000s.
Well, she wrote it.
Carole wrote dozens of hit songs...
I’m so glad I grew up in this time period. Music was the best. Clothing and culture were crazy, I guess, but the music speaks for itself. Rock on 70’s.
In 1971 being an 11-year-old male listening to this timeless hit, I never imagined that I'd still love and have a passion for such a relaxing easy listening song in 2024. Good times back then. We need Carole King in our music today to remind us that life has been great and is full of wonderful memories.
LYRICS
Stayed in bed all mornin' just to pass the time
There's somethin' wrong here, there can be no denyin'
One of us is changin', or maybe we've just stopped tryin'
And it's too late, baby, now it's too late
Though we really did try to make it
Somethin' inside has died
And I can't hide and I just can't fake it
Oh, no, no, no, no, no
(No, no, no, no)
It used to be so easy, livin' here with you
You were light and breezy, and I knew just what to do
Now you look so unhappy and I feel like a fool
And it's too late, baby, now it's too late
Though we really did try to make it (we can't make it)
Somethin' inside has died
And I can't hide and I just can't fake it
Oh, no, no
There'll be good times again for me and you
But we just can't stay together, don't you feel it, too?
Still I'm glad for what we had and how I once loved you
But it's too late, baby, now it's too late
Though we really did try to make it (we can't make it)
Somethin' inside has died
And I can't hide and I just can't fake it
Oh, no, no, no, no
It's too late, baby
It's too late now, darling
It's too late
Thankyou for lyrics

Tapestry is just brilliant.
Bill Higgins agreed
Tapestry was brilliant.
Possibly the best Album ever written I can remember word-perfect every track
It IS brilliant, in fact I recall hearing that music producers everywhere learned from this one album to NEVER put that many hits on one album, to parse them out over several albums to make more money.
The Best!!
The bit that really caught my ear when this became a hit and I heard it on the radio was the instrumental section: electric guitar, and soulful saxophone, and…wait, what instrument is that? An electric piano-weaving in and out of each other. Well, not just any electric piano, a Rhodes. I ended up buying one a few years later. I gigged with it extensively well into the eighties, and I still have it.
Only 11yrs old and liked her voice so beautiful ❤️
One of the most beautiful songs of all times...
One of the best break up songs ever.
One of the best songs ever break up or not
I'm so thankful to have been raised on this beautiful music ; it's the only joyful memory I have. (My mother is a Sociopath with Narcissistic Personality Disorder, so my childhood and that if my three siblings was horrific! But there is comfort, beauty and joy in this music. ). ❤
My relationship with music is similar. Maybe my childhood wasn't so bad, but my happiest memories come from songs. They seem so much more sincere and true than people
tapestry made such an impact on so many people, never gets old. every song a masterpiece

This is woman keeping real to both herself and her former paramour. Songs like this don't exist anymore because people rely on gimmicks and catchphrases instead of their actual feelings.
thank you!!!
There's no songs today that bring back feelings , I just know real music has died.

Gimmicks and catch phrases, something Democrats rely on instead of actually trying to solve the problem
This got me back to that time after coming home from Nam, an being in that hospital an getting my Dear John letter. I thought she must wrote that letter after hearing this song. But really like all of Carole's songs. an got 3 great kid, an 5 grand kids from a love of my life. So life always goes on.
thank you for your service
Thank you, that counts a lot, for now. but any one in any service in the 60's to the 70's, those times were very hard. From paper bags of dog shit, thrown at us, to not getting food in a restaurant, some times we could not even get in the door an them tell us, or me No food for you. Almost as bad as the blacks of that time. Just a very bad time. Now we have those people in government Crazy.
@@jackwireman5457 First & foremost, I most heartily thank you for your service as well! 👍
I grew up during the 60's & 70's & I had two uncles in 'Nam & one dear friend who came out of the jungle on the end of a rope!! Under fire! Sadly, we lost him to Crohn's BEFORE the VA concluded it WAS caused by Agent Orange. Grrr.
But mostly, as you point out above, the way you soldiers were treated upon your return was, to me, a grade school kid, abominable!! Truly if anyone believes that people are ugly right now {& many are} chat with a Vietnam Era Veteran!! Also, sadly & enragingly, here we go again with the whole "Baby Killers" bullshit! 😤
Unbelievable! My son in law did 3 tours in the 'sandboxes' & he does have undiagnosed PTS {as it is now called} but won't admit it nor seek help. Very sad. But here we are & I am so very glad that you are still with us! Our generation had CCR etc., & nowadays the troops have Five Finger Death Punch & so forth to listen & relate to!
Non Sibi Sed Patriae! Peace! ✌☮😊🤘💨
