As a 42 year old who started watching basketball in the late 80s, I concur with BJ…I’d rather watch my kids middle school basketball game than the utter trash the NBA is currently putting on the court.
I came up hooping in the mid 80’s… in Baltimore, back when Dunbar High School, Calvert Hall, Mount Saint Joseph, Cardinal Gibbons, Southwestern, Walbrook, Lake Clifton… Southern, were producing high level D-1 guys and many professional guys. In High School, hooped against so many great players, and the game was physical… Sam Cassell, Rick Fox(Basketball camp) were just a few of the guys I hooped against … Even after High School, I hooped in many leagues with guys who were former D-1 players and guys who played overseas… I only saw playing time because I played defense (I was a skinny 6’4 wing) and even in High School, the game was PHYSICALLY demanding… It’s different when you chasing a Sam Cassell off screens and the screeners are the 6’10 Dozier twins who in high school were built like Antonio and Dale Davis. Lol. Yeah many a times I felt like I ran into a wall… I think now, that had I come up in this era… I would’ve had a shot at playing beyond high school (I did try to walk on in college…but was the next to last cut, a kid named Melvin Swan made it over me, because he was … more physical, I was around 190 at the time, Melvin, same height, but was a chiseled 215) anyway my point is todays game is soft, and physicality made the game far more difficult.
And while Harper was hand checking you, you were able to keep your dribble alive without palming / carrying, without traveling, and you were STILL able to get a quality shot off and make it. But remember everyone, today’s players are way superior and more talented than any era of basketball ever….🙄
The clip you played of BJ Armstrong was posted on an IG account, and there were so many people(young fans) who defended the game and the analytics… of the 3pt shot. It was many arguments in the comment section … lol.. Honestly I try to watch, but I can’t watch a game from start to finish… because it is boring… What is not spoken about is that all the old school coaches are now gone, on all levels… the new coaches are all on board with the modern analytics game. They scout and recruit players based on these concepts… which lets me know, that old school game ain’t coming back… It will take a brave coach, who wins with an old school approach, wins consistently, for NBA teams and executives to change course. Otherwise, what we are seeing will continue for the foreseeable future… And again the young generation loves it… the next generation will emulate this generation and so on and so forth

It all started with David Stern when he took away hand checking and wanted that European style bullshit. Now look what we have, a bunch of 3 point shooting, a joke of an All Star game and players that take nights off whenever the hell they want to. Let's start by bringing back hand checking and some physicality.
