    System Shock is an upcoming action-adventure game developed by Nightdive Studios and published by Prime Matter. It is a remake of the 1994 video game of the same name, originally developed by Looking Glass Studios. The game is set to be released in May 2023 for Windows, followed by ports for Linux, macOS, the PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
    The original System Shock, released in 1994, was developed by Looking Glass Studios, which closed in 2000. The company assets, including the rights to System Shock, were acquired by Star Insurance Company, a subsidiary of Meadowbrook Insurance Group. In 2012, Nightdive Studios acquired the rights for System Shock 2 and produced a digitally distributable version updated for modern operating systems. Nightdive Studios subsequently went on to acquire the rights for System Shock and the franchise as a whole.
    Two months after the release of System Shock: Enhanced Edition in September 2015, Nightdive Studios announced plans to develop a remake of System Shock for Windows and Xbox One using the Unity engine. Originally announced as System Shock Remastered, Nightdive Studios has opted to simply name the new game System Shock, because they consider the level of effort put into the title makes it more of a reboot of the franchise rather than a remastering of the original game. Veteran designer Chris Avellone and members of the Fallout: New Vegas development team have confirmed their involvement.
    Nightdive Studios planned to fund the development of the game through a Kickstarter campaign that started on June 28, 2016, with a goal of US$900,000. Alongside the Kickstarter campaign, the studio released a free demo featuring an early build of the first level of the game, exhibiting their efforts so far on the project and intended to "demonstrate [their] commitment and passion" to faithfully rebooting the game. The Kickstarter goal was met on July 9, 2016 with 19 days left in its campaign, and closed on July 28, 2016 with more than $1.35M in funding from about 21,600 backers. The additional funding was to be used towards Linux and macOS versions of the game, expanded areas, and support for the Razer Chroma. With the successful Kickstarter, Nightdive Studios anticipated a December 2017 release for the game.
    During the Kickstarter period, Nightdive Studios saw that there was a considerable demand for a PlayStation 4 version of the title. They subsequently talked with Sony and were able to affirm that a PlayStation 4 version would be possible. The studio planned to release this version in early 2018. The addition of the PlayStation 4 port did not impact the Kickstarter funding request, as the studio believed it could complete this with the $900,000 sought. After breaking the US$1 million mark on Kickstarter, ports for Linux and macOS were confirmed.

    I'd say the remake is a far worse scenario, cause the original implies that you died and they reanimated your corpse, but in the remake, your character was just wounded enough to bring them down, and they were still alive while being assimilated, and by their final scream, it was a pretty grueling experience. you also kinda wonder if they are still conscious and lost control of themselve, or if shodan completely wiped their consciousness entirely. either way, that's a frightening way to go.

      The Hacker is definately alive in the remake due to the very heavy breath before the Cortex Reaver begins to drag them into it.
      So yup, the remake one is absolutely worse.

    • @thefallencog

      @@FiendMatadorSlayerOfNoobs The hacker isn't alive in the remake. Its the player model squishing preemptively to be modeled correctly for when the appendages of the Cortex reaver drag his body inside. Theres a lot of funny physics bugs and strangeness the developers needed to do to make things look sort of right in the remake. Lord knows why. The player model doesn't have a model other then his "Civilian clothes" The hacker doesn't even bleed ingame.
      You can make an argument that in some "deaths" the hacker is indeed intentionally giving himself to Shodan, as her Dialogue implies. Although its possible shes just having a god complex moment, its really hard to say, because Nightdive didn't really expand much on the original game or even the few bits and pieces they added here and there.
      The player screaming is supposed to be the body spazzing out as intense amounts of electricity are supposed to be going through it. In the original game the hackers chest was turned into a donut and he was very, very much dead. When the air is forcibly expelled from the lungs you get all kinds of weird sounds. Assuming the Vocal chords aren't destroyed, or they are also being stimulated.

    I remember vividly that moment when I first died in the original. For me it hits different because of the sudden change from hype, upbeat OST to that shit. In the remake it just feels like a natural thing to happen with the tense, atmospheric background music.

    If you look closer at the original's death animation, you will see that not only did the Hacker's eyes rolled to the back of his skull. As the electric currents of the Cortex Reaver ran though him, the skin and flesh on his head started to darken and crackled.... Add onto it the idea that you're still slightly conscious so afterwards it's like being in a constant state of dementia. You know something is wrong. You can feel it. But, you just can't focus enough to figure it out. All these minor memories keep flooding in with no correlation to the present, your body is moving but you aren't the one commanding it and it distracts you from the bigger concern. • @Gameprojordan
      @Gameprojordan Год назад +43

      The reason why she sends it after you is because Cyborg Reavers are the only robot in her force that can connect to cyberspace. Since the Hacker has alot of knowledge of hacking cyberspace, it makes his brain useful for the robot to use to fully power itself. Without a proper human host's brain it can't do anything but wait around until SHODAN commands it to retrieve and attach a human to itself.
