Thank you for this, my SP finally has a decent battery and I could do the mod by myself, despite my unremarkable soldering skills, by just ordering one of those batteries and your PCB from Osh Park.

I'm going to mod my original AGS-001 from when I was 10 and keep it looking beat up as a sort of sleeper system so I can leave my AGS-101 alone. Back in the day I upgraded to the 101 when my 001 charge port stopped working, so this will bring it back to life.
Little late, but thanks for all the useful info you provide for all your viewers. I'll definitely be utilizing this mod as an IPS equipped SP needs all the extra power it can get.
This makes me happy because I'm working on an SP mod board and had already thought that using a LiPo cell would work fine being at 3.7v. This confirms it for me. I'm planning on using one with a jst connector and using a similar daughter board to what you made.
I know it has been a year, but I'm waiting for my parts so I can do this. This is the best/cheapest option if you live in Eastern Europe. Hopefully the battery arrives at the same time as the PCB
I've ordered 6 of those boards. I plan to make batteries for not only my game boy but, also for all of my original DS's. Fingers crossed that it all goes well
THANKS!! Just got my 900mAh battery and did the soldering! It's not clean as you but it works!! :) Thanks!! Now I don't need to charge my gba sp every hour (^^'
Så awesome, just did the mod! But with the - BYX 1000mah (603048) batteries, up to the test now to see battery playtime, hoping for 6-10h Ordered from oshpark pcb
Ok so i’ve tested the mod today, it takes longer to charge (yes i know why so no surprice) but it has been on since fully charged with mid volume and backlight for OVER 7h now, still green light!? Insane! Super happy I found this ❤️ thanks legend!
Thanks. I recently bought one of the crappy teal ones and replaced the internals with one of these batteries. Bought it from Amazon and soldered the wires to the pads. It is just slightly too big and the batter cover pokes up just a bit. This was tried with both a stock AGS-001 and replacement case. :( The charge seems decent, but other than playing it, I don't have a way to test. It came with 3.0 volts and took several hours to charge and then works fine. Markings say PL 603048 3.7V 900mAh 2020 03 28. It looks like the 603048 means 6.0mm thick by 30mm x 48mm. There looks to be a LP523048 size that is thinner, 5.2mm thick with the same other dimensions, but the capacity is only 750 mAh. That might be why most of these batteries only go up to ~750mAh. No idea if my battery is ever so slightly too large or what. I think if I were to buy one again or recommend one to people, if you want to make sure the battery cover fits, sacrifice capacity for the LP523048?
would this battery gonna work on DS Phat? searching for a new battery and i dont even know where to look but i know that gba sp batteries are also fit on ds phat
saw the pre-soldered one on the shop but shipping to europe is more than the battery, gonna hold off for now and try some alternative methods but keeping this one in the back of my mind
Well I open sourced the design because I figured that international shipping on batteries would be tough to deal with. If you can source 603048 cells locally, the board will ship free from oshpark. Otherwise, helder's battery is also pretty decent and probably more reasonable to ship from zedlabz.
it's *not* 60mm x 30mm x 48mm It's *more like* 48mm x 30mm x 6 mm as biggest edge length of GBA SP battery is 52 mm so it definitely wouldn't fit if it was 60mm on any edge. it's also strange that it is 6mm not 5 as gba sp battery is 5mm thick
Hey makho love the sp mods you do keep them coming. I found this battery on ebay/aliexpress its a 603048 1400mAh Rechargeable Lithium Polymer Li-Po Battery by HSABAT. Would this battery work? if so would this 1400mah battery be as high as an sp can go?
I sincerely doubt the claims of the capacity of that battery. Cramming 50% more capacity into the same size does not seem realistic to me. If that's accurate though, yeah. As long as the size is correct, then yes that battery will work.
@@makho The highest 3.7v LiPo battery i can find is 10000mah on Aliexpress for $10. Charging voltage: 4.2 ± 0.03V with a thickness size of 12mm X 100m x 60mm. Even if claims is false and is off by 50% thats still a whole lotta Nintendo Power!!
@@makho so i think im gonna order the pcb from osh park. If i try to go for the high mah like a 10000 battery should i order the pcbs with 2oz copper, 0.8mm thickness?
Is it possible to do it on a 1200mah battery? Found a 603048 with this specs, and also at 3.7v. My EZ Falsh Omega and IPS screen are just eating my battery, so this was my hope, but I only found people doing it with 900mah batteries.
Comments like this make me sad because it indicates that people aren't listening to what I have to say. No because either the battery is not indicated size (where did that extra 300mAh come from?) or because the battery is not the indicated capacity.
Sorry, makho! English is not my main language, so I didn't hear some stuff right I suppose. Thanks for answering! Back to the questions, isn't the capacity the "mah" stuff? Shouldn't It just affect the battery life since the voltage is the same? And I don't know how they packed those extra 300mah, but I double checked and it is a 603048 indeed. I even found a 1400mah on Aliexpress, but the brand doesn't seem reliable.
@@DonateloGM1 Right, my point is that the extra capacity has to come from somewhere. Either the battery is physically larger than stated (and will not fit) or listed capacity is not the actual capacity (which it will work but it's not 1200mAh).
Ok, thanks! I'm gonna risk It and buy the battery. I will run some tests and report them here when I get the results, but it's gonna take a while. Again, thanks for the patience!
oh wow nice. i did same battery mod for my old psp and my old samsung galaxy phone and wondered if it's possible for my gba sp too and to my surprise it doesnt even require proprietary pcb. just old fashioned -/+ terminals. this looks so easy. thanks
Hi Makho, big fan of your work. I have a boxypixel unhinged v1 shell, but I have no desire to include the usb-c mod that is an option. Would this be compatible with the 1700 mah battery that boxypixel sells? I am thinking yes but want to be sure in case there is protection circuitry needed that I am unaware of. Thanks!
I'm a bit confused. If you got the 603048 from China as well, then how does it actually check out with the correct mAh but then the ones made for GBA SP are always less than advertised?
Not all cells are made equal. Buy from a reputable manufacturer and there won't be a problem. Reputable manufacturers don't cell directly compatible SP batteries.
Need some help... so I ordered a li-po 603048 and I received it today. The thing is that I didn’t even notice the that battery I ordered has 3 wires coming out of it (red, black, and yellow). Can I still use this battery? Can I just cut off the yellow wire? This the second battery I ordered because the first had the same model number but was too large for the battery compartment... yes I’m a noob :(
Hi mate! I have a GBA SP with corrosion on thebattery connectors. It is so bad that it actually broke (one of the connectors - partially). I think that would be interesting in knowing how we could hook up a battery in a different way (maybe with a regular battery connector), or fix the connector or any other way to circumnavigate the issue. Thanks!!
If you have a DS or DS Lite, you can salvage the battery connectors from either of those. The DS one should be drop in but the DS Lite one needs some modification IIRC. Otherwise, you can just pick up some battery connectors or something and solder in a pigtail.
@@makho Thanks for the explanation! =) I managed to buy another SP (very cheap) because I needed some other parts as well...I will probably savage the connector from it but your alternatives are also very good. Thanks!
Hey, hoping you can help me here. I purchased one of these batteries and chose to solder it directly to the gameboys motherboard. I soldered the wires to pins 1 and 2 of the battery connector and it turns the gameboy on fine. However, I don't get a charging light when I plug in the SP charging cable. Am I missing something?
@@TechnoGeek3D use a multimeter and check the continuity across F2 on the PCB near the charge port. If the part does not have continuity across it, replace the fuse.
Hi! I installed this battery mod in an unmodded AGS101 but now im experiencing frequent shut offs and reboots, I made sure the battery contacts were securely touching the prongs in the SP, but i still get the same issues
I sized the board so that it would have to be wedged in. If it fits loosely, it may make bad contact. RetroModding's version sought to fix this issue but you'll need a 3D printer and to file your existing battery PCBs down or order new PCBs entirely.
Love your videos, very helpful. I did try to buy one of the PCBs but they're out of stock and I live in Australia so shipping times are brutal. Would I have any problems just stripping a bit more length and wrapping the wires around the contacts then insulating with kapton tape? I was just gonna buy spare battery contacts just in case and solder but they're really hard to find for the sp for some reason.
oshpark offers free GLOBAL shipping so you can always just go that route. If you order the PCBs from a chinese fab (though you may have to look around for one that offers small PCBs), shipping may be quicker but will be quite a bit more expensive.
Would that work with the original Nintendo DS as well? Because, gba batteries work in those things. I'm just curious because, it would be great to not have to spend 15-20 bucks on aftermarket original Nintendo DS batteries.
It would work. The only difference between the original DS battery and the SP battery is the location of the small plastic tabs that help keep the battery in when the cover is off. I actually use a DS battery in my modded SP and all I had to do was file down one of the tab and half of another one. The cell is 850Mah for DS.
Hey there! I was hoping to get your knowledge/ opinion on having multiple batteries in an sp wired in parallel. I've seen it but rarely. I understand that so long as they're the same type& voltage that its fine. Am I missing anything? Is it ok if they're different capacities? Thank you!
When it comes to batteries, my typical advice is that "if you have to ask if it's ok, it's probably not ok" because safe battery handling can be very complicated. You can read more about it here: batteryuniversity.com/article/bu-302-series-and-parallel-battery-configurations
I have an AGS-001 that I use exclusively as a controller for GameBoy Interface. Since the link cable blocks the charge port, I have to worry about battery life while playing. Pretty annoying How difficult would it be to make an AC adapter for the SP? Ideally the console would plug into the wall and to the GameCube, and it probably wouldn’t have a screen at all. How feasible would it be to bypass the charge port and power the device directly from the battery terminals?
Made 4 of these today for my ags-101 gameboys. easy and simple to do. I have a 600mAh in one and im going to charge them both and test them side by side
So I ended up picking up two of these batteries. I then modded it into a cheapo battery casing. Also learned that shorting a LiPo battery is recipe for fire. However, I got it all packaged up nicely, but it still fits quite snug in the battery compartment. That is the cover closes but it kinda bulges a bit. And im a perfectionist so I wanted it super flush. Any suggestions ?
I can't say. Mine fits flush with no bulging at all. Perhaps the latest batch of these batteries is a hair thicker or something. I suppose you could cut out the back of the battery compartment to make room for the thicker cell but that probably defeats the purpose of the "no modding required" solution. If there is anything wrapped around the battery (aside from the polymer casing which is required), I'd remove it. If there are any labels or tape, try without and see if it fits better.
@@makho yeah I mean its all good. I got it to fit pretty snugly with some work. Was also thinking it might be cool to fit a 1200mah like a 803048 battery as well with no case/housing from a cheapo sp battery
Hey I know this isn’t relevant to this video but I was curious since you’ve had experience with virtually all the GBC backlight kits at this point: Have you encountered any trouble with the AIO kit? I just opened my GBC up to adjust the screen placement a little bit and when I pieced things back together, the screen now won’t go to full brightness while playing. On start up, it will fully illuminate and then drop down to a lower setting. The screen still cycles through the five settings but won’t get nearly as bright as before. Thanks for bringing us such great modding and tutorial videos, it’s been a big help as someone just starting out! P.S. - God bless you for printing those spacers lol
Hey Makho, I know how much you advice against TP4056. What about IP5306? No expert, but sheet seems to specify it has adaptive charging current, load and balance. Would this support charge and play?
I'm thinking of doing the same, but sacrificing the contacts from a bulging 3rd party battery, instead of ordering a board. Maybe 3d printing a bracket, spacer or something to make it fit snuggly. What's your opinion? I think it might work. Thanks!
If you're using a 3rd party battery, chances are you can also just reuse the frame of that battery and the contacts too instead of having to make a new frame. I've made quite a few this way but I don't know if I've ever made a video on that (and I'm not going to). I did dissect a 3rd party battery though: ruclips.net/video/WNPUOTrFTrs/видео.html
@@makho i ended up doing exactly that! I reused the frame of the old battery. It worked great and looks fine. And your video dissecting batteries was incredibly useful. Thanks for the reply!
Awesome videos dude. Your channels inspired me to do some game boy modding. You make it seem so seemless and fun, keep it up man. Quick question tho; does the mAh matter for the battery you use? I’m thinking of using a 1000mAh battery, same size and everything. Any dangers to that?
mAh is literally the capacity. The higher the capacity, the bigger the battery. In situations like this, it is nearly always safe to go with a bigger battery than spec. The danger is going with something smaller that might not be able to handle the current demands or charging spec of the existing circuit.
I use an original DS battery in my SP. It's 850Mah. All I had to do was file down the plastic tabs on it and it fits in perfectly. I think I would do this mod if we had any room inside the case we could expand and use for an even bigger battery. Unfortunately there isn't any. left has the battery connector, top has the power plug. bottom is the cartridge connector and right has a component in the way. Maybe custom 3d printed battery cover that stick out and a ticker battery? Or as someone else said in the comments, use the space behind the IPS screen. I did a battery mod on my PSP-2000 last year. Removed the entire UMD drive, cut the plastic between the UMD drive area and the battery area and used that entire space for a 4000Mah Battery. The problem with the PSP is that you need the little pcb from a real battery for it to work and can't just directly connect a battery.
The problem with original DS batteries is the same issue with SP batteries -- they stopped being made over ten years ago. The shelf life on rechargeable Lithium Ion batteries is typically much less than that.
@@makho Yeah but they are still slightly more recent than the SP batteries. I'm not saying we should seek them out but if you have one it's worth swapping them out.
I think it look cooler this way. On mine I have a black smokey shell and I use an original DS battery. It's black with white text on it but it has the DS logo. Just one more thing to show off through the see through shell when I show it to someone.
Will this also fit in a DS Lite? I know that the contacts are on the side instead so the board needs to be repositioned. But does it fit? All the reviews of most "official" and 3rd party batteries seem pretty bad. So this seemed like a good replacement option, if it will work.
I've found a 1100mah 603450 battery on ebay that's built just like this one. Noticed that it's barely 4mm and 2mm longer on each side. Would this still fit on here, maybe just a little more snug? Given that this one when you first dropped it in as a test fit, it would move around EVER so slightly... Plus it's 150mah bigger for even better capacity👀
There's extra room on the sides but not that much extra. I don't think it will fit but if you end up getting one and discover otherwise, please let me know.
@@makho Just got the battery!! Sorry if it's a lot, but I'm excited to start doing mods on my SP. This was my first console when I was 4 years old. The extra 4mm to make it 34mm unfortunately are too much, and the battery does not fit on that side... I THINK that if I trim just a bit from the inside of the battery compartment, I can make the battery fit ery snuggly. Tested the battery with just the wires attached, and it does power on the GBA SP and runs! But I don't have your custom battery board so I can solder the wires to it and just snap it into the SP, And I'm praying that the board fits, because the extra 2mm on that side to make it 50mm may be a little too much too, although without the board it looks like it'll fit snug... Will just have to wait for the board to come in! Also, I'm about to run battery tests for my original AGS-003 battery. It says 3.8v 600mah. As far as my own gameplay the battery lasts pretty good on regular cartridges but terrible with the EZ Flash Omega, but I'ma run tests to see how much it lasts with both, and when I get the board to solder this new battery in I'ma do tests on those!! Just don't know if I should run at Low or High brightness. Still have original AGS-101 screen. Thanks if you happen to read all of this.
@@Ben10Arg Indeed did have to end up trimming. The extra 4mm is too much. Even with that, the battery fits EXTREMELY tight. It does work though, but I haven't tested battery life. The thickness of the battery is just fine and the extra 2mm on the longer side just makes it fit more snug in that side.
I can’t find the gold batteries anymore like yours in the video so I am just gonna start building my own with these instructions! I couldn’t tell by the video I may have missed it but is there a + and -? That way we know which wire goes where? I am not good enough with an iron to replace those tiny fuses yet 😂
yes, it's right on the board right next to the solder pads. I even edited the files to make that marking more clear because some people still missed it.

This is amazing, I only recently got into “modding” by replacing shells, screens etc,... and this looks like a nice and easy solder job, large contacts make this a no brainier really, SPs do have to short a battery life. Do you know of any PCB diy companies in the UK I could do this with or would it be worth doing an overseas order? I really have no experience with ordering your own PCBs thank you.
makho: Thank you! When I checked which battery you used, the website had expired/ page unavailable so I was just wondering if you knew of other sources to buy from?
Hi, dude. This is nice and informative, thanks. I have just a little question: where can I find this specific PCB? (I don't live in the US) I already found the battery and I am going to order it from the same place you did. Thanks in advance.
@@makho Thank you very much, I checked, but did not see it the first time. I ordered and expect it to come. Your videos have a good content with a lot of tech solutions and you won a new sub. Continue doing such things, man. Cheers.
hi, i'd like to make the same mod (I ordered your PCBs), but I'm doubtful about the batteries to buy, they all come from China, like the low quality ones you talk about in other videos (where they write 850 and then they are 350). Why should these "naked" ones be better than those? Can you advise where to buy them or which ones you took? They all look the same on ALI, but maybe they are not.
Because these cells I recommend are standard sizes made by reputable manufacturers (and less than reputable). The aftermarket SP batteries are all custom jobs and none are made by reputable companies from what I've seen. For the former, if you buy from a reputable seller, you should have no issues. For the latter, well, don't buy those.
I really want to mod this type on removeable battery on my gpd win 2! I hate having it screwed in and stuck down! Wish I could switch out batteries on the fly
@@makho yes, I would try to mod a magnetic cover instead of the screw. Also shave down the pcb a little if possible and wrap the entire lipo. But great idea thanks
Nice battery mod! I've just bought everything I need for my 3 GBA SP, thanks for the links! How can I do the same with a GameBoy Micro? Is there a suitable size available in the market with more mAh? Size in Micro is 37*23*6.7, I've found that there is a 602035 or 602535 that maybe can fit, what do you think?
Honestly, I'm not quite sure. There is a bit of wiggle room in the Micro so that bigger one might be fine. The last battery mod I did on a Micro, I used a much smaller cell because it was what I had on-hand. ruclips.net/video/887x2ws7bHQ/видео.html
Thanks! I haven't opened the macro yet, I'm waiting for the USB cable to charge it and check the battery I have cause I have only the Japanese plug and doesn't work here in Europe. I'll try opening it and measuring the space inside.
Makho, I know I'm kinda late on this video but since I'm from EU and since your batteries are sold out all over US. Could you kindly update the AliExpress link for the battery cell? And could you recommend an adpter from the same website? Thanks in advanced!

Fingers crossed that it all goes well
How did it turn out for the Phat DS?
@@michaeldunn5788 It should be fine. The original DS used the same batteries and charger as the SP did.
hi, cool mod, i can't wait for your video of your AGB lipo Mod !
That’s a very engineering solution for this mod. Kudos
i love your gba sp mod videos it helps me alot thanks
THANKS!! Just got my 900mAh battery and did the soldering! It's not clean as you but it works!! :) Thanks!! Now I don't need to charge my gba sp every hour (^^'
Så awesome, just did the mod! But with the - BYX 1000mah (603048) batteries, up to the test now to see battery playtime, hoping for 6-10h
Ordered from oshpark pcb
Ok so i’ve tested the mod today, it takes longer to charge (yes i know why so no surprice) but it has been on since fully charged with mid volume and backlight for OVER 7h now, still green light!? Insane! Super happy I found this ❤️ thanks legend!
Veredict: SP turned red low bat after 10h and 16 min ❤️
Edit: dead at *13h 08 minutes*
Fantastic. Just ordered the PCBs
Mine just showed, in a stock shell it was a little loose, no friction fit, hopefully the battery itself will keep it in place
Simple and elegant! Nice work.
I'll look into it, thanks
Would be nice if RGRS would sell already modded batteries. Not everyone has a solder iron or even can use it well.
would this battery gonna work on DS Phat? searching for a new battery and i dont even know where to look but i know that gba sp batteries are also fit on ds phat
yes
I love your vids man! It helps me alot!
Ok! Veredict, the SP turned red (low bat) after 10h 16min 😳 insane!
Nice Mod!! Thank you for sharing
Appreciate this video. Hard to find information about this stuff.
Great vid and brilliant but simple idea, have ordered mine, free postage to the UK cant say better than that.
saw the pre-soldered one on the shop but shipping to europe is more than the battery, gonna hold off for now and try some alternative methods but keeping this one in the back of my mind
Well I open sourced the design because I figured that international shipping on batteries would be tough to deal with. If you can source 603048 cells locally, the board will ship free from oshpark. Otherwise, helder's battery is also pretty decent and probably more reasonable to ship from zedlabz.
You've got a Ez Flash Omega to test with this mod?
Of course I do. Why though?
@@makho the ez flash omega consumes battery 3 times faster than a normal cartridge
How many hours does it last on?
Lasts 5 hours on gba with Ips and Ez flash omega... but the Red light turns when about 2 hours left battery life
Just ordered the board on osh. Have a couple of slim 1000mah batteries.
I don't know that those 1000mAh batteries will fit
@@makho I did a test fit minus the board and it seemed to fit perfectly.
Nice PCB and solution
You really need to put some sort of Frankenstein logo or artwork on the gameboy
it's *not* 60mm x 30mm x 48mm
It's *more like* 48mm x 30mm x 6 mm as biggest edge length of GBA SP battery is 52 mm so it definitely wouldn't fit if it was 60mm on any edge.
it's also strange that it is 6mm not 5 as gba sp battery is 5mm thick
yeah china battery codes start with thickness first. it's 60 as in 6.0 idk why they won't brand it as something less confusing as 63048
I'm looking for a battery. If you know of places that sell those, that would be great.
Again, thanks for the patience!
where can I buy a pre soldered version?

oh wow nice. i did same battery mod for my old psp and my old samsung galaxy phone and wondered if it's possible for my gba sp too and to my surprise it doesnt even require proprietary pcb. just old fashioned -/+ terminals. this looks so easy.
This the second battery I ordered because the first had the same model number but was too large for the battery compartment... yes I’m a noob :(
yes, just ignore yellow wire. It should be fine. Double check with a multimeter in case they used non-standard wiring.
I managed to buy another SP (very cheap) because I needed some other parts as well...I will probably savage the connector from it but your alternatives are also very good.
Did it charge before you decided to make modifications? Are you sure your charger works?
@@makho I checked the voltage, it was 4.02v. My charger definitely works too as I get the orange indicator light on my other, non modded sp 🤔
Oh schitt! I think it will work.
It would work. The only difference between the original DS battery and the SP battery is the location of the small plastic tabs that help keep the battery in when the cover is off. I actually use a DS battery in my modded SP and all I had to do was file down one of the tab and half of another one. The cell is 850Mah for DS.
@@chamoo232 so it WILL work. :]
@@SuperLuigiGuy64 definitely.
Yup, it will work.
Where can i find soldering equipment for cheap? I want to try this since i have both the battery and little conductor piece.
I highly recommend learning to solder on a practice kit. ruclips.net/video/i7KBzwaj6nE/видео.html
I have an AGS-001 that I use exclusively as a controller for GameBoy Interface. Since the link cable blocks the charge port, I have to worry about battery life while playing. Pretty annoying
How difficult would it be to make an AC adapter for the SP? Ideally the console would plug into the wall and to the GameCube, and it probably wouldn’t have a screen at all. How feasible would it be to bypass the charge port and power the device directly from the battery terminals?

I was wondering if the lipo mod would work in a original ds? was wondering this because the original ds and gba sp basically use the same batteries.
yes
Made 4 of these today for my ags-101 gameboys. easy and simple to do. I have a 600mAh in one and im going to charge them both and test them side by side
anyone need 4 relatively new aftermarket sp batteries? lol
I got a good extra 90 minutes on an ags-101 on full brightness with an ez flash cart. about 6.5 hours overall. not shabby
8.5 not 6.5.... grrrr
Nope, mine's been fine other than the noisy last column when playing double-speed games.
Hey Makho,
I know how much you advice against TP4056.

@@makho If a DS battery lasts me six hours, then would the battery in this video add another hour or two due to it being a lot more recent and fresh?
@@Scarftail DS batteries have the exact same issues I mentioned. Not only are they lowe capacity (by design), they are also like 15 years old. So yes.
nice! put a sticker make it look stock

@@eebenitez373 hey, what ended up happening with using a 34mm instead.. did u trim anything and did it work for you?
@@Ben10Arg Indeed did have to end up trimming. The extra 4mm is too much. Even with that, the battery fits EXTREMELY tight. It does work though, but I haven't tested battery life. hi, i'd like to make the same mod (I ordered your PCBs), but I'm doubtful about the batteries to buy, they all come from China, like the low quality ones you talk about in other videos (where they write 850 and then they are 350).
