Note that the batteries tend to fit better in the bracket with the text side down. This solved my battery cover bulge. Also, yes, I did record this in November. I forgot to publish it. Oops.
3d printing is expensive since most ppl aren't going to pay hundreds of dollars to buy one only to print a small bracket. the best suggestion is buying cheap modeling clay mold it to the size you need to hold the battery so that is has no room to wiggle and then use an oven to harden it once it is done and cool just place the battery into the mold. clay can be bought for like $5-$20 depending on the amount. clay allows you to do it in the most basics forms or make a complicated bracket like the one you are holding. all you need is a smooth bottle and a knife.

If youve got a dead battery just gut it and use the board thats already there. Its what i did for a giant battery that sits where my umd drive used to sit and it still charges using the regular charge port (modded mine so i no longer needed the drive)
Thanks, i was trying to find a way to replace the battery cell without having to mod the console so i could still use my umds. but i may have to do it has you suggested
With the ones retro modding is selling, I found cutting off the center and rear plastic that went across the bottom made the bulge go away too. PS - have you tried the battery by helder that retro modding has for sale now? That one looks to have the same size as the OEM batteries.
Thank you so much for your videos, I learnt so much and I just did my first battery mod. I got XZK branded "1000 mAh" batteries and there's some bulge on the battery cover, even though I put the battery with the text side down (it only seems to fit that way anyway). It seems to work great though, SP plays fine and is currently charging.
@@makho I copped it about a month ago. Battery life is epic. It plays for a while then goes orange for a while then back to green. In your experience is this power switch related? I saw your video a while back about desoldering it and cleaning it (no problem for me of course), but I was just curious if that behavior warrants the operation.
Hey Makho! Hopefully you see this but do you know if this would work with an iPod Mini? Size wise it should fit, I’d just need to wire the connector up. There’s no quality batteries on the market for the Mini and everything being sold is old “new” stock (several years old) and either dead or dying. Tempted to spend the money just to find out, this would be a great alternative.
idk if youll respond bc its an older video but i broke off the actual contacts part to the battery on the sp motherboard, can i solder a lipo battery directly to the points?
that requires having already made the poor decision to buy an aftermarket battery. Most OEM batteries do not have salvageable frames (or even frames to salvage)
@makho Hey I just bought 2 of your batteries from RGRS and I tried 3d printing the battery holder for the LiPo battery but it came out extremely flimsy. What material did you use for it to come out sturdy? ABS? PETG?
Hi dude, I have one of those batteries without the blue case around it. What can I charge it with? From what I understand the gba charger is too high voltage for it despite using it in the past. Thanks
Any chance you're designing a bracket for the DS Lite? I thought about using your v1 battery mod since it should technically fit in the DS Lite with the PCB on the left instead of on the end. A bracket would just be a nice touch for aesthetics.
Awesome. By the way, do I need a charger with higher amperage when I use one of this modded batteries. I'm planning to use the OEM charger of my SP but it's 5.2V with only 320mA. Actually did try it with the 850mah battery pack and it smelled like burnt plastic initially but turned out fine and the charger is still working and no signs of damage in the battery when I check it's voltage and amperage. But when I use my OG battery it doesn't smell of course. I just scared I might start a fire. Lol
The charger is in the Game Boy itself. What you are asking about is a power supply and no, you do not need a higher amperage power supply. The Game Boy will only pull the current it requires and no more. A higher capacity battery will simply take longer to charge.
What would you consider a healthy parasitic drain for a modded SP when it's off? I'm using this exact kit minus the bracket, and on a whim I decided to test for drain and got .3um on my multimeter. The SP is using the cloud game store laminated screen, Helder's power cleaner + amp, and Giltesa's USB-c charging mod w/audio passthrough, and as far as I know none of those components should be causing parasitic drain. Your videos have been indispensible as I've gotten further and further into modding and restoring gameboys over the last few months. Your SP battery board is my go-to now.
I've never measured it but there is a chance that SP consoles have an extremely small amount of parasitic drain. Even when switched off, the battery will still be connected to the charge controller (or PMIC in one chip SP models) via a mosfet. I don't know the leakage on the mosfet but I've heard people boot up SPs after being off a charger for 15 years and the battery still had enough charge to boot fine so it should be extremely minimal. I do not have any tools precise enough to measure that low a value.
Mahko, i need a help. I not have other gba sp and start restored my gba sp, but found a problem i cant identify. Try charger my gba and led indicator stay on, i stay charging 6 hours and led not off. Fuse and em8 this ok. I suspect The battery by time use. Exist some one test i can try before swap battery?
So I got two of those for my SPs cause their batteries were absolutely dead, and whilst I get crazy battery life (>7 hours on AGS101 full brightness), the voltage drops the LED to red about 2/3 of the way which makes it hard to know when it's dangerous to play without recharging it. Did I get faulty cells ?
Nope, that's just how the SP works. The batteries I use and the batteries that Nintendo designed the power management circuitry for have a slightly different voltage curve. Basically, most of the capacity is above the 3.7v point on OEM batteries whereas most of the capacity is below the 3.7v point on these batteries. My recommendation is to just pop the SP on the charger when you're done using it (or after you've used it at least a couple hours if you don't play for longer sessions). There is no "memory" on these cells (that was NiCd batteries) so you can recharge any time safely.
Hey man I luv your vids, been following ya for a while now. I got a question to ask regarding an AGB i bought. I've purchased a GBA AGB 32 pin. The console worked and the only issue it had was the right shoulder button not working. So i've ordered a new one. When it arrived I removed the older one and soldered the new one in. (I've quite some experience with soldering, been doing it for many years) Upon rebooting the console for some odd reason I get a blank screen. The console powers on just fine, audio plays, and with an inserted cartridge the game sound can be heard.I have another 32 pin model AGB laying around so I tried to swap the screen to see if perhaps was a screen issue, but still same issue, despite the fact that the other screen works just fine inside it's original 32 pin AGB mobo. What is puzzling me is, before replacing the right shoulder button the console worked fine... Any suggestions on what the issue might be? Im going mad trying to figure it out.
