I would gather to say that the overwhelming majority of women who run their home and raise their kids full time would NOT allow a lazy husband to not contribute in some way to the house that he also lives in. “What’s the point of having the male around” just shows me that you don’t have a committed life partner who also contributes, and who shows/tells you every day how wonderful and valuable and amazing you are. Men are in our lives for so many reasons, but to name a few: physical protection and comfort in our deepest darkest moments; a shared love of life and living/building that life together; making us laugh and ensuring we don’t take life too seriously (it’s why they call men “big kids” all the time); and to reminds us-women, who are the hardest on ourselves than anyone else can be on us-that we are awesome, strong, and beautiful, inside and out.
Well my family are not Jewish either but I was raised the same way. Dishes were washed in a container and then the soapy water and rinse water were put in the garden and on the flower beds. Everything was recycled. We had paper drives glass drives and the money earned went to different projects in town. We had community gardens. We even planted one because it was available. We also had a yard so we had a good sized one. Any extras were given away. Resale shopping, real estate and gardening has also been passed down to my children. Materialism in my generation is rampant and I don't know why. You know keeping up with the Joneses. Look at all the crap in their houses and in their yards. I started learning that in my 30's from people who are not from my culture. Why? because my culture doesn't know how to save. Half of the advice I follow is Jewish finance.
Life is hard enough. I don't want to make it harder. I want to make it easier. I don't want to learn the hard way, via scars and pain. So I want to gain the experience of my elders, because they went through the painful struggles that I seek to avoid. In order to optimize my life, acting upon the advice of elders and sages of old times, would be a much better choice.

Yesssssss. I have too many toys and especially when I was making a lot of money, I bought a lot that I've never used. I think that I could have bought a house with all the money I've wasted. Now I'm poor and am more appreciative. Well, actually I don't consider myself poor on 50 euro per week. I have food and health and a house.
Some of our kids won't listen to us to the detriment of everyone in the family. We all suffer because the grandkids are over stimulated and their home is chaos. Simplifying equals peace.

I am Ukrainian and my Mom was raised in Jewish neighborhood. Lady Dina described my childhood with my Mom tried to do her best and make me happy by efforts and emotions - not money.
I'll tell you one thing I learned... don't use the dishwasher. My water bill tripled the month I decided to use my dishwasher instead of doing everything by hand. I immediately called my leasing office & the young lady said, "I thought there was something wrong. Do you mind my sending a maintenance person to your apartment to check for leaks?" I agreed. He didn't find any leaks but he knew how much water is used by the dishwasher. So we figured out that was the cause of my drastic increase. I also turn off or unplug all electrical stuff, including the lights. Many years ago I saw a documentary that said that even though your electronics are turned off or are not in use, they still pull electricity.

If you think giving a whole apple is bad you should see how much food is wasted in school cafeterias with "free" breakfast etc also lunch too. Kids take food and throw it straight into the garbage untouched.....!!!!

This woman is a national treasure. Actually, most grandmothers are. She is almost a twin of my Cuban grandmother, who passed away five years ago. I miss her so... it was wonderful to hear this lovely grandmother sharing her advice. God bless her and keep her.
Grandma’s recommendation to check your receipts is spot on. The food stores almost always have a mistake in their computer system, never in your favor. Some stores have a policy that if an item is wrung up incorrectly and you go to Customer Service to fix it, you get that item for free. I have saved hundreds and hundreds of dollars over the years. Just checking my receipts.
It’s hard to stand there and check your receipt when there’s a line of impatient people waiting to check out behind you. I’m not going to be that person to hold up the line. If it costs me a couple bucks, so be it.
People including family members thinking am doing to much by collecting and checking my receipt, don't care even if I am buying salt! I go further by keeping the receipts for at least for 1 month.
@@lessehead You don't check the receipt on the spot. You move away & check it. Then if there's a problem, you take it to the service counter. The cashier has often scanned an item twice when there was only one. At big supermarkets we also get that item for free. I much prefer to self serve & scan then pay for my own items.

Grandma Dina is so authentic. I miss sitting around the dining room table with Nana Pauline and my mom and Aunt listening to Nana's stories and words of wisdom. She also learned to laugh a lot. She and Poppy escaped Russia and Poland to avoid WWII. They made it to the USA right before the war broke out. So, the wisdom and comedy we gained from them is invaluable. 💕💕 old Jewish wisdom is like salt on eggs. You don't realize how necessary it is until you've tasted it.

This literally just saved me $129. I watched this video this morning and just now I went to Target and bought a comforter that was $129. I never ever check my receipts, but today I did because of this video. Sure enough, they charged me twice for the comforter. Thank you Grandma Dina! ❤

All these great advice reminds me of what my nana said when my brothers and I accidentally broke her vase. My mom was super apologetic for what we kids did and my nana said, "It's ok. Things are meant to be broken, but people are meant to be loved."
as a childcare provider, the point about the toys is SO ACCURATE!! all of the kids i take care of that have a plethora of toys can't even focus on one thing for more than a few minutes, and they don't seem happier for it
Hey Dina, I remember my Irish Catholic mother taking me to Cafe for something to eat when I was a child and just having a cup ot tea herself. When I asked why she wasn't eating she said the same thing-she wasn't hungry. Hearing you say that brought me to tears. The sacrifices our mothers make-all colours and religions and that is why we love them. I bet your grandchildren love you 🙏

NYC Jewish older women are the coolest to be around. They are loud and talk a lot but such a sense of humor, kind and honest, always have advice and spice up any events. Also the Italian neighborhoods are a trip. They also have them in Jersey and Boston.

I am a Muslim and totally agree with grandma. This was grand wisdom. I think all our grand moms were full of wisdom. Home cooked meals, not over buying and not spoiling children with tons of toys. She is so right, if you want to develop your child’s focus, give him a few things to play with. I only introduced my child to a Tarzan book which we would read every night for months. We then went and watched the movie and he was thrilled because he knew all the characters, clothes are another complete waste of money. Hand me downs were the best thing. Those who fall into the advertising trap become literally hypnotized. They don’t understand that all they want is for you to think that what you already have is outdated, old and not good enough. Exactly! Younger people have no idea how valuable older folks are. Istead of being ageist against the elderly, kids today need to be made aware how valuable they are. They need to be listened to and held to the highest esteem! How do ya think they made it to that age? Not by winning a Darwin Award, that's for sure.
This is how I grew up in Morocco where resources were limited. We grew up to appreciate and use these resources carefully and efficiently...never threw food away! I think this beautiful grandma grew during hard times..
MyJewish Moroccan family moved to France in the 50s. Never went back. I heard all my childhood how they miss their lives there and always had a lot of Moroccan friends in France. I feel very Moroccan ( especially the food and the music), even if I have never been there yet. God bless the Maroc and its People.

My family are Jews from Spain and Morocco. Moved to France in the early 50's. Both Grandmas look like Dina( especially the Spanish one!!) Dina is Ashkenazi from Eastern and/or Central Europe, but still looks like a Hebrew Matriarch. Our Mothers/GrandMothers are gold. Bless them.

I am not Jewish but I am loving this!! I agree with her about toys...to add to her thoughts on the subject...kids who get too many toys don't appreciate them. Same thing when parents buy their kids new cars without making them pay for at least half. They don't take care of the car, and if they wreck it... parents buy a replacement. Anyhow, you're totally right about kids not appreciating toys if they have too many, and especially right about the car thing! Yes pay for half! As a kid who was spoiled myself, I can attest: I did not appreciate what it took to Buy this car, I did Not take good care of it - didn't even know How, really - and when it overheated and blew the head gasket, who paid to have it fixed? Love this episode! I am Chinese, but my mom and this sweet grandma. My mom used to make her own and the kids' clothes. When friends sees them, they would ask where my mom bought it from, my mom would proudly tell them she made it, and friends would end up buying from her. We didn't take showers till I was a teenager. We only had a bucket of water and that's the only amount we can use to save money. Any extra money we had, mom would put it into a savings account, in different currencies to hedge against risk. We then put money into real estate, but more focused as my dad ran a factory and his theory was "things need to be made, so factory space is important part of society". As my parents were building their wealth, my dad became a huge watch enthusiast, but he always buys used and always find a diamond in the rough. And this grandma is right, finding a good bargain is fun! I remember I found a thin jacket for USD 6. I was wearing it one day and my dad saw it and asked me how much it was, I told him $6, and it turned into conversation of the day. I now teach my kids to buy used toys and share amongst themselves. She's right, we don't borrow anymore. When I was a kid, my friend and I would exchange toys and Nintendo games for a week.my sister would borrow friend's clothes. I got a bunch of hand me downs. We are blessed that we got a lot of hand me downs for my kids.
Sharing economy. I live in Yangjiang and whenever I need a scooter or air conditioner or TV or toaster oven I go to those second-hand stores with huge piles from hotels that went out of business. Whenever I need a new laptop or computer monitor it's all second-hand. And then whenever somebody needs something I give it to them. My motorcycles, my lighters, some trinket around my house, women just like to take them.
I had a Jewish grandmother and she was fantastic! "Grammy" had a wealth of information and solid advice. She's been gone for 41 years, but, her words are still very clear, in my mind, today.
GrandMa Dina is so precious and full of wisdom. She reminds me of my Mother who taught us to shop sales and thrift stores. We didn't have money growing up, but most people thought we were way better off than we were. My Mother will be 85 this year and when I go visit I always take her shopping. I also tell her of grocery sales and such and buy things she wants to take to her. I want to see and hear lots more from Dina. I agree with you, she needs her own podcast. Grandma Dina is such a wise woman and hopefully we can all learn from her. So many of us waste so much of everything everyday and we are not even aware of it! One thing that makes me mad at our house is when people waste water by letting the tap in the kitchen sink run at full blast when they are just washing one little item like a spoon. I grew up in Southern Africa with nothing much, and that taught me to value everything I've got.

Yes, very pratical and useful advices. HOWEVER, if everyone would follow it, half the clothes shops would close (people would only buy second hand) and all those people would go to unemployment, then also second hand clothes wouldn't be available because people would not buy new clothes. Then clothes factories would close... and so on. Basically we would regress to the beginning of the 20th century. Similar effect on borrowing toys. Unfortunately economy is not so simple.
Let the rich people and financially dumb people and wasteful people keep buying all the new clothes. Nobody is saying “Everyone, don’t buy new clothes.” Some people have to buy new because they can’t find anything that fits or that they like at 2nd hand shops. People who are frugal and smart about saving money and who listen to good advice shop thrift stores and consignment shops. That’s only a small percentage of the population, so no worries.

This is AWESOME!!! I feel like I'm listening to my parents. My parents came here from Italy with $500. My dad had a job lined up, and soon bought a car. My mom worked as a seamstress and cleaning lady. Later they bought a house, then they bought a two-flat for rental income. These are true pearls of wisdom that will never go out of style. Talking to your kids about these kind of things is so important. I think in most families today, there are no discussions about all of this, and beyond. Even when she said to check the receipts...I was told that all the time. My parents both passed in the last year, so this kind of brought tears to my eyes. I kept thinking of what they would say if they were watching this : )

I'll tell you one thing I learned... don't use the dishwasher.
My water bill tripled the month I decided to use my dishwasher instead of doing everything by hand. I immediately called my leasing office & the young lady said, "I thought there was something wrong. Do you mind my sending a maintenance person to your apartment to check for leaks?" I agreed. He didn't find any leaks but he knew how much water is used by the dishwasher. So we figured out that was the cause of my drastic increase.
I also turn off or unplug all electrical stuff, including the lights. Many years ago I saw a documentary that said that even though your electronics are turned off or are not in use, they still pull electricity.

"Don't give them a whole apple to eat" needs to be on a sign in every kitchen.
Easier to eat cut up and they might finish it cut up. Kids are afraid of the seed and the core of the apple which is why they just have a few bites.
If you think giving a whole apple is bad you should see how much food is wasted in school cafeterias with "free" breakfast etc also lunch too. Kids take food and throw it straight into the garbage untouched.....!!!!

Grandma’s recommendation to check your receipts is spot on. The food stores almost always have a mistake in their computer system, never in your favor. Some stores have a policy that if an item is wrung up incorrectly and you go to Customer Service to fix it, you get that item for free. I have saved hundreds and hundreds of dollars over the years. Just checking my receipts.
It’s hard to stand there and check your receipt when there’s a line of impatient people waiting to check out behind you. I’m not going to be that person to hold up the line. If it costs me a couple bucks, so be it.
People including family members thinking am doing to much by collecting and checking my receipt, don't care even if I am buying salt! I go further by keeping the receipts for at least for 1 month.
@@lessehead You don't check the receipt on the spot. You move away & check it. Then if there's a problem, you take it to the service counter. The cashier has often scanned an item twice when there was only one. At big supermarkets we also get that item for free. I much prefer to self serve & scan then pay for my own items.

Grandma Dina is so authentic. I miss sitting around the dining room table with Nana Pauline and my mom and Aunt listening to Nana's stories and words of wisdom. She also learned to laugh a lot. She and Poppy escaped Russia and Poland to avoid WWII. They made it to the USA right before the war broke out. So, the wisdom and comedy we gained from them is invaluable. 💕💕 old Jewish wisdom is like salt on eggs. You don't realize how necessary it is until you've tasted it.

I am a Muslim and totally agree with grandma. This was grand wisdom. I think all our grand moms were full of wisdom. Home cooked meals, not over buying and not spoiling children with tons of toys. She is so right, if you want to develop your child’s focus, give him a few things to play with. I only introduced my child to a Tarzan book which we would read every night for months. We then went and watched the movie and he was thrilled because he knew all the characters, clothes are another complete waste of money. Hand me downs were the best thing. Those who fall into the advertising trap become literally hypnotized. They don’t understand that all they want is for you to think that what you already have is outdated, old and not good enough. This is how I grew up in Morocco where resources were limited. We grew up to appreciate and use these resources carefully and efficiently...never threw food away! I think this beautiful grandma grew during hard times..

Never went back. I heard all my childhood how they miss their lives there and always had a lot of Moroccan friends in France.

I am not Jewish but I am loving this!! I agree with her about toys...to add to her thoughts on the subject...kids who get too many toys don't appreciate them. Same thing when parents buy their kids new cars without making them pay for at least half. They don't take care of the car, and if they wreck it... parents buy a replacement. Sooo true. I'm glad your said that about toys. Her statement about wooden blocks made cry: that was such a beautiful thing, to just use one's imagination and to physically interact with the blocks. Anyhow, you're totally right about kids not appreciating toys if they have too many, and especially right about the car thing! Yes pay for half! As a kid who was spoiled myself, I can attest: I did not appreciate what it took to Buy this car, I did Not take good care of it - didn't even know How, really - and when it overheated and blew the head gasket, who paid to have it fixed? My poor, dear Dad who worked so hard in his life and deserved a much better daughter. So you see, if you don't manage to teach your children about responsibility and consequences, you just make yourself And them less happy. (It wasn't my dad who didn't discipline us. It was like living between two opposites.)

Love this episode! I am Chinese, but my mom and this sweet grandma. My mom used to make her own and the kids' clothes. When friends sees them, they would ask where my mom bought it from, my mom would proudly tell them she made it, and friends would end up buying from her.
We didn't take showers till I was a teenager. We only had a bucket of water and that's the only amount we can use to save money. Any extra money we had, mom would put it into a savings account, in different currencies to hedge against risk.
We then put money into real estate, but more focused as my dad ran a factory and his theory was "things need to be made, so factory space is important part of society".
As my parents were building their wealth, my dad became a huge watch enthusiast, but he always buys used and always find a diamond in the rough.
And this grandma is right, finding a good bargain is fun! I remember I found a thin jacket for USD 6. I was wearing it one day and my dad saw it and asked me how much it was, I told him $6, and it turned into conversation of the day.
I now teach my kids to buy used toys and share amongst themselves. She's right, we don't borrow anymore. When I was a kid, my friend and I would exchange toys and Nintendo games for a week.my sister would borrow friend's clothes. I got a bunch of hand me downs. We are blessed that we got a lot of hand me downs for my kids.
Sharing economy. I live in Yangjiang and whenever I need a scooter or air conditioner or TV or toaster oven I go to those second-hand stores with huge piles from hotels that went out of business. Whenever I need a new laptop or computer monitor it's all second-hand. And then whenever somebody needs something I give it to them. My motorcycles, my lighters, some trinket around my house, women just like to take them.
I had a Jewish grandmother and she was fantastic!

GrandMa Dina is so precious and full of wisdom. She reminds me of my Mother who taught us to shop sales and thrift stores. We didn't have money growing up, but most people thought we were way better off than we were. My Mother will be 85 this year and when I go visit I always take her shopping. I also tell her of grocery sales and such and buy things she wants to take to her.

Grandma Dina is such a wise woman and hopefully we can all learn from her. So many of us waste so much of everything everyday and we are not even aware of it! One thing that makes me mad at our house is when people waste water by letting the tap in the kitchen sink run at full blast when they are just washing one little item like a spoon. I grew up in Southern Africa with nothing much, and that taught me to value everything I've got.

Some people aren't as fortunate to have 2, Hell, even 1 Well-to-do Parent(s).. Keep that in mind.
Yes, very pratical and useful advices. HOWEVER, if everyone would follow it, half the clothes shops would close (people would only buy second hand) and all those people would go to unemployment, then also second hand clothes wouldn't be available because people would not buy new clothes. Then clothes factories would close... and so on. Basically we would regress to the beginning of the 20th century. Similar effect on borrowing toys. Unfortunately economy is not so simple.
Let the rich people and financially dumb people and wasteful people keep buying all the new clothes. Nobody is saying “Everyone, don’t buy new clothes.” Some people have to buy new because they can’t find anything that fits or that they like at 2nd hand shops. People who are frugal and smart about saving money and who listen to good advice shop thrift stores and consignment shops. That’s only a small percentage of the population, so no worries.

This is AWESOME!!! I feel like I'm listening to my parents. My parents came here from Italy with $500. My dad had a job lined up, and soon bought a car. My mom worked as a seamstress and cleaning lady. Later they bought a house, then they bought a two-flat for rental income. These are true pearls of wisdom that will never go out of style. Talking to your kids about these kind of things is so important. I think in most families today, there are no discussions about all of this, and beyond. Even when she said to check the receipts...I was told that all the time. My parents both passed in the last year, so this kind of brought tears to my eyes. I kept thinking of what they would say if they were watching this : )
