in this video, i will be sharing with you how to install genshin impact using the genshin installer.

please note: editing config.ini isn't required. i had just always done this to avoid an error i encountered when a major update was released (i think around 3.6 or 3.7) where it will just show a blank or black screen after hitting "play" on the steam deck. if it works for you without editing, then that's great ~ !
the video shows how i install to my ssd but for everyone installing on their sd card:
1. create a folder first on your sd card. (i used to create a "games" folder, of course, you can name it anything you want)
2. right after the installer screen comes up (after hitting 'play' or around 2:04 of the vid), open dolphin and find the genshin folder in compatdata folder (use protontricks or sort by date modified to quickly identify)
3. click and drag the folder you created on your sd card to the genshin folder (with random numbers)/pfx/drive_c and select "link here" from the options
4. going back to the installer screen, hit "advance" and select the folder in your sd card

Can you elaborate on this step because I'm hella confused as to how to get this to install to my SD card.
I was confused too, I can elaborate because I came across the same problem and I fixed it.
First you need to enable hidden files on the dolphin file explorer, go to home and look for local/share/Steam/steamapps/compatdata then search for genshin. Link the exe file from your sd file to that genshin folder. Then change the file path path to D: (or the one that has the genshin folder.) It should work from there. Let me know if you need more clarification

There is no need to change your controller layeout, you can use the pointer at any moment if you hold "Steam" buttom and using the trackpad 😉

Or you can just tap it. Genshin recognize touch input, but not sure if Steam Deck translation layer properly forwards them to the game though.

I had been trying for hours to figure things out, the comment saying to press both the steam key and cursor helped with avoiding touch screen during installation and I didn't have to edit the config.ini files. Great tutorial, thank you so much!

does this automatically update your genshin if a new patch comes in? i used to be able to play genshin on my deck before the most recent patch but i butchered the updating process so i had to reinstall the whole game again and it just has so many steps and not to mention how big the game is so i just didn't bother installing the game on my deck again. idk why ffs they do not have genshin on steam just plain and simple. all this extra steps. so frustrating.

Thanks for this information it really helps alot, last video I saw of this installation tutorial said delete the installer on steam which causes you to download the whole game again 😅 such a pain

hi! Do you know why, after I've installed the game, and I add the launcher and launch it it tells me "Get game" as if I haven't downloaded the game at all even though I 100% did? Also, if I relaunch the original installer and hit install the launcher itself then pops up and it says play and I can then Launch but then my keyboard will not come up!! Thx
Great tutorial! Here is a tip, at 4:06, open the folder called "Genshin Impact game" and use the executable inside that instead. Then the game will immediately open bypassing the splash hoyoverse page everytime!

it will work as if you are updating genshin on pc. launcher will have update button etc. i will try and post another tutorial when next patch comes 👌

Followed all instructions but when I hit play the game does not launch it loads for a second then it goes right back
Great video. I was able to get this to work on the new Steam Deck OLED with this. The only thing I had to do that wasn't mentioned here was restart my steam deck during 1:53. The proton version wasn't showing until I restarted it.
EDIT: @huemann, would you happen to know how to launch the game at a lower resolution full screen everytime? It keeps defaulting a different resolution I changed it to.
Do u think u can get banned?
@kracksickles you can try going to game properties and change game resolution there set for internal and external display
@mrsabry3023 there is a possibility. so if you don't want to risk it then maybe get windows on sd (which isn't a really good experience) or stream
@@huemann96 Thanks for the reply. Game properties in steam? I tried it there , and checked internal and external display. That only messed up the display of the game's launcher (zoomed in on the game launcher). I tried switching to desktop mode and looked for any settings on genshinimpact.exe , with no solution.
I really want this to work, because if I have it at a lower resolution than steam deck's native resolution, I can kick on steam deck's FSR frame generation ability. For now, I just change the resolution in-game after every launch.
the launcher will look funny but you can still launch the game. when launched, the game itself will be at reso you set.
but during my testing, genshin's built-in upscaling would result to better quality image than deck's though. but you sure can squeeze a bit more fps enabling deck's fsr

glad it helped! editing config.ini isn't essential so it will run ok. but previously i got a blank screen after launching the game - this was after a major update (around 3.7 i think) and editing the config was the solution. so i just always do it to avoid that same problem in the future.

Hello... I know this is a dumb question question but, can you get ban by playing genshin using linux/proton?

That why if your main device is a Deck, is better to dual boot and run GI on Win10
I have not been able to start it, when it tries to validate the files after downloading it gives me an error message saying that it cannot unzip them, so I cannot play Genshin. I tried to use epic and I was able to start it but when I try to log in the captcha screen comes up blank and I can't get past it either, it's very frustrating.
that is unfortunate ~ i personally never encountered such issues and i've installed/re-installed like 4+ times. maybe try different proton version?

Nice tutorial, I have a question, I saw on other people, if u delete the installer it also erases the game, I haven't try to delete it because it took me 4 hours to install, did you deleted the installer?

Hello! Very nice tutorial, but could you please give me more instructions on how to install to my installed SSD? It's the big problem I'm running into - can't seem to choose a "good enough" file path to my SSD, which is causing the installer to spit out: not enough space, and I'm stuck. Any help would be appreciated!!!
i just followed the default file path if installing to SSD. if installing to an SD card though, best to create a folder first then create symlink. i'll try and put out a video later or tomorrow about installing in SD card.

You have to restart your steam deck for the new protons to show up

there is that risk but i am fine to risk it and been playing on the deck since 3.5 or 3.6. of course if you are not happy to take that risk there are other ways to play genshin on the deck

I installed the game on my SD card, can you please explain the symlink creation? I'm assuming an update can break the game/launcher if it's not created.
glad this helped! to establish a symlink, go to compatdata folder then genshin folder (with random numbers) > pfx > drive_c
have the sd card files list open on split view then left-click and drag the folder where you installed genshin to the drive_c location then select "link here" from the options.

Additional info to others who might ask for this - you need to delete the empty "Genshin Impact game" folder in the location where you initially installed the launcher of the game. Then, just drag over the "Genshin Impact game" folder from the SD card and create the link in the launcher's folder.

I was able to start the game just one time with this method. After that, the complete compatdada/(ID) directory got deleted .....
Now i have to redownload the whole game
why does mine need to be download again, but when I click on it i dont have enough space for it? did i miss something>?
So I’m able to open the game if I use the executable from genshin impact game folder where it bypasses the launcher. When I try the launcher executable it says to download again. Any idea what I should do?
Having a issue, I have game installed at "/home/Games/GI/Genshin Impact game/" but I copied the game files (only the items of GI game folder) from other system (windows) , and in launcher it says to download again n again or If it starts it gives black screen, (game v 4.6.0, protom exp-valve)
Hey why do you use proton ge? It also works with proton expiermental right? Is there any advantage of running ge?
works with experimental yes. i just like how ge is more "stable" as experiemental is sort of like the "beta". i dont think it matters that much though, it's just what i've always done which works for me so ^^
how did you get there to be no blur of the games artwork in the backround? and fullscreen when prompted to launch the game?

Trying out this tutorial again because it didn't work for me the first time and when I tried to launch the game the screen would show up blank after loading for a brief amount of time. It was most likely my mistake but hopefully it works this time T_T

I found why for me, did you checked "show hidden files"? After that i did `/home/deck/. steam/steam/steamapp. And it worked

How do you make sure you have enough space? Once you downloaded it did you have much space left? What do you recommend in this situation?
i have 1tb ssd installed and still have like some 400gb free storage (including 20+ other games installed). previously, i had it installed in a 512gb sd card and didnt encounter lack of space coz i only have around 3 or 4 games that i play most installed and i still have like 200gb free. so i guess i would leave at least 50-100gb free for future gi updates/releases.

Hey thank you so much for the tutorial🙏 Tried it with another tutorial and didn’t get it running. The solution was to go im /home/local/steam and not /home/steam. My only question is what the changing of the sub channel to 3 does? Thanx again🥰
glad it helped! tbh it isn't a required step, i had just always done it because during 3.6 or 3.7 update, the game won't launch for me. it was just showing a blank screen or black screen and the solution i found was to edit the config file and change the sub-channel.

I tried this method to HSR, but it dosen't start (it installed perfectly and shows the launcher screen) when I hit play button, it show black screen then exit the back to steam. if anyone tried it before tell me dose it work with you?
Tried it myself a day ago, same thing happens. Start it up in the launcher only for the black screen. Pretty sure I did all the same steps too so I’m not sure what went wrong.
There is a video from Hi-Tech Lo-life, posted 3 months ago, for Genshin Impact. You can follow the same tutorial for Star Rail.
Instead of installing "An Anime Game Launcher", you just need to install "The Honkers Railway Launcher". It's on the same list.

nevermind just figured it out by finding the launch.exe thing in the genshin folder on my sd card and making that where it launches (i also moved the file with a bunch of numbers to the sd card but im unsure if that did anything)

can't really say it's safe as hoyo never officially released for steam deck. but i've been playing on sd since 3.5 or 3.6 and i'm okay risking it. if you're not then there are other ways to play on the deck

Tysm for the tutorial! I’ve reached the point where I can open the game but when I use my controls (joysticks) it don’t do anything. The game works but the only issue is that I can’t move in game. I didn’t changed the controller layout because someone in the comments here said that this isn’t necessary. Although I’ve tried anyways but I couldn’t changed my controls. Do you have and idea what I can do? 🥹
