Dead On Arrival: Intel i9-10900X CPU Review & Benchmarks vs. 3900X, 3950X, 9900K

  • Intel's Core i9-10900X 10-core CPU lands on the HEDT X299 platform and competes in price with the R9 3900X, R9 3950X, and Intel i9-9900K CPUs.
    Sponsor: EVGA RTX 2080 Ti XC Ultra (Amazon - geni.us/tebmP)

    Buy AMD's R9 3900X (Amazon): geni.us/PFNAIh
    Buy Intel's i9-9900K (Amazon): geni.us/O0N6
    Buy AMD's R9 3950X (Amazon): geni.us/Rs83
    The Intel Core i9-10900X is Intel's 10-core, 20-thread CPU that was supposed to be a big step-up from the Intel i9-9900K. It's close in frequency -- sort of -- and higher in core count, but it's also entering a field heavily dominated by the AMD R9 3900X and R9 3950X CPUs. All three of these, of course, have been largely paper launches, but both AMD and Intel are working toward getting shelves more consistently stocked. In the meantime, the 10900X's launch is nothing short of a bloodbath, and it's not in favor of the new Intel 10-core CPU. PCI-e lane count is perhaps the only defensible position, but even that is challenged by other chips on the market.

      Let's hope AMD will gain a lot (!!!) of market share, so they will be at the position to pay 100k for finding security vulnerabilities or will be interesting enough so people will search without a bounty ... the people who found Spectre, Meltdown, Zombieload etc. were payed by Intel in a program to improve security of CPUs. AMD does not offer anything like this, so as of today it makes no sense in searching for security vulnerabilities in AMD CPUs + they only have 4% (!!!) of the server CPU market, which if you have any knowledge obviously is the only one where Spectre, Meltdown etc. are relevant (makes it interesting that gaming kids without any knowledge are the ones crying the most, even though the security flaws are not applicable on their systems ...). This is why most security vulnerabilities are found on Intel CPUs. That some of the recent were applicable to AMD processors was random luck. If AMD had over 90% market share AND would pay 100k for finding security vulnerabilities most of them would obviously would be found on AMD CPUs. To think AMD CPUs have no security flaws, only because nobody is searching for them is simply said stupid.
      Btw Ryzens and Xeons here, before some 12yo will try to call me a "fanboi" again ... I don't give a single fuck about companies, I only care about the product. Sometimes Intel offers the better deal, sometimes it is AMD, which is why I always considered CPUs from both companies over the past 20+ years. The only security flaw that I ever saw being used was the one right in front of the monitor ...

      That doesn't mean that the average user is in grave danger or something like that, because of the vulnerabilitys, it's simply a blow to the overall image of the brand. And that's really bad for Intel...
      Most of us will gladly sacrifice 5% of the frames per second in change of better security...

    • @SURO90
      @SURO90 4 года назад +2

      @@TheSilviu8x "nice try" on what exactly? The only ones found by Google and Microsoft were the 4. variant of Meltdown/Spectre which already has been patched as they made it public, which is why nobody could claim the 100.000$. That was more of a publicity stunt because everyone was on the Meltdown/Spectre hype ... Has anyone who actually found these vulnerabilitys BEFORE they have been patched declined the 100.000$ or what are you trying to say? Do you mean the BIOS updates for Spectre/Meltdown to sacrifice 5% frames for better security? If you meant choosing AMD over Intel you are misinformed in thinking to have a more secure system, as I explained above. There are reasons to take a AMD CPU over one from Intel, which is also why I went for a Ryzen on one of my systems, but security is not one of them, you must be naive to think that.

      Well that needs to be AMD. Nvidia have no reason to lower prices. They have the high end (for gaming) pretty much to themselves. If AMD can pull a Ryzen in the GPU market, we'll get competition and lower prices. But it's not really AMD making the GPUs, any more than it's Volkswagen making Lamborghinis. Sure, they bought the company and replaced the money men, but the know-how guys are still the same people. Unfortunately, ATI guys don't seem to know how. You can't just replace them all, or you might as well have just started your own GPU company from scratch. It takes time to built the right team. The money coming in from Ryzen will help lure the right people to the team. I think it's smart not to start a GPU war just yet

      AMD will clean Ngreedia's clock within a year or so. AMD is powering both PS5 and Xbox2. Both have confirmed ray tracing. I'm guessing Ngreedia has a response in the pipeline, as even the 2080ti was an overpriced, lackluster part (relative to a 1080ti and the absurd price). AMD has said their next GPU will have raytracing and beat Nvidia performance, and I believe them since both of the next gen consoles are using AMD GPUs. I can't wait to get an AMD GPU and OC the hell out of it. I have a 2080ti and a radeon r7. The R7 sucks, a lot. Awful OC, awful cooling, awful drivers, and awful performance (even with a 560mm radiator that keeps the card under 50C on water). The 2080ti kicks ass compared to anything from AMD right now, albeit at way too high a price. I have no doubt next gen AMD will at least beat the 2080ti at a fratcion of the price. Since 4k monitors that run at 144Hz cost a kideny right now, I'm happy with an AMD GPU driving my 2 4k monitors @ 60Hz. Next year is going to be a great time to be a gamer, especially if the AAA publishers can pull their heads out of their asses and realize they don't need ALL the money in the world. Now we just need affordable 27" 4k 144Hz HDR10 monitors (I can dream).

      AMD pretty much confirmed that they aren't going to bring GPUs prices down with the 5x00(XT) launch, they are literally putting right at the spot to match the inflated prices Nvidia created(slightly lower in the case of the 5700(XT) to compensate for the lack of features), even when they could probably be sold for much less when judging by die sizes compared to previous generations and Nvidia cards, there's no way that a 5700(XT) costs the same to make as the 2060(Super) or the Vega 56 at launch.

I currently play on a 1080p 144Hz G-Sync machine, and will probably soon upgrade to a 1440p 144Hz machine.In most games, I've been able to hold up 144Hz stable after adjusting the settings correctly. DX12 and Vukan-based games are typically more stable, because they tend to better use the high core count. There's actually a video of mine playing Doom 2016 on 1080p Ultra giving out 200fps in game, while streaming the entire thing to youtube in 60fps 1080p. I'm willing to sacrifice 10% or so of gaming performance for the 30 to 40% more productivity performance I get with the 3900x over a 9900k. Comparing the 3900x to the 10900X, you can clearly see that the 10900X only has an advantage over the AMD machine once it's heavily overclocked, at which point we're talking about a ~200W or so CPU against a 105W CPU. Not really a fair comparison now, is it?

For games that don't exceed 4-8 threads would keeping the process on the same CCD, or even the same CCX, make a measurable or perceivable difference? I have a 2700X (and a 1700X before that) and back before Windows 10 1903 I noticed that keeping games on the same CCX improved frame time consistency (less stuttering). The 8700K has more or less identical performance to the R5 3600, which is the current go-to CPU for the vast majority of gamers. You just paid twice and much and had it 2 years earlier.

      @Massimo De Grazia I agree to an extent, I still think that the time it takes for the technology to move forward shouldn't (or rather isn't) be as drastic. These results include games from previous years, so even in the slightest bit I should see improvement. The improvement here is so negligible you can throw it up to error of margin.
      That isn't okay. It most definitely should not be acceptable.

    Go with a 3900x because it costs $520 - 580.. Don't buy a 9900k because it costs $450 - 490. It doesn't matter if both chips are on par with each other, AMD costs less. Here's the proof:

      AMD fan boys need to get their eyes checked... Intel is clearly cheaper and slightly faster in gaming, but amd is more expensive by 30 bucks for slightly better video encoding, plus they have to disable SMT for gaming. Do you really want to deal with all that switching around?

    These and x299 mobos are a really good deal right now provided you need lots of pcie lanes. I need 2 nvme drives, 16x GFX, 8x SDI capture and 8x 10gb networking and another 1x PCIe. Can’t get that on non-HEDT chips and x299 parts are much cheaper than threadripper.

    I cannot understand why the most important (I my mind), CPU to compare it to, the 7900x is not included?? How does it compare to last gen so to speak? You include 36 CPU's in comparison, non of the with the same core count? I find it odd.

    • @stoneymahoney9106
      @stoneymahoney9106 4 года назад +5

      I believe they revamped their test suite last year (IIRC?) so the numbers they have on the 7900X from it's review at release back in 2017 may not be comparable. They certainly didn't test the same games back then. Also, would they bother to keep it? It's a weird, super-niche part that was appallingly bad value, hardly moved any units and is all but flushed out of the supply chain at this point, so it could have been too much effort and/or cost to get hold of one just for this review.

    • @ObjectiveCoder
      @ObjectiveCoder 4 года назад

      @@stoneymahoney9106 I do understand all of that. But this follow-up is an equally "super-niche"-part. And the only natural upgrade path for people on the old part. So if you choose to review a niche part like this, then I still expect it to be compared to it's predecessor.
      Ok, let me say this then: This is not a good part, we understand that. The only LOGICAL consumer of this part would in my world be people already on x299, why I think the generation comparison becomes important. Because for all other consumers this basically won't be a part they consider anyway.

    • @stoneymahoney9106
      @stoneymahoney9106 4 года назад

      @@ObjectiveCoder No. Not even slightly. Logically speaking, no-one should replace a 7900X with a 10900X. It takes 3 seconds of looking through their spec sheet to realise they are virtually identical in every way that counts, you would be an idiot of epic proportions to consider the 10900X as an upgrade to an existing 7900X system. Unless your 7900X is dead, you might as well just flush a grand down the toilet. Or spend it on replacing your entire platform with a higher performing AMD equivalent - hence all the AMD comparisons in the review and not even a single mention of the 7900X.

    • @ObjectiveCoder
      @ObjectiveCoder 4 года назад

      Yes. Again I agree. I only believe a proper review of the part should include that conclusion.
