      look i get that having a 10900x and a 10900k which are very different is confusing, but at this point would you really prefer they go with something other than 10900k? at least it's consistent that way. i would much rather they continue with their usual core product naming scheme than change things at this point. this is what allows me to know, even without checking that the '10900k' is going to be their top consumer CPU, since that's what they've done for a decade and we are well familial with it at this point. why ask them to change, i don't get it.

    They could have simply reworded to "60% of games benefit from increased single core performance" and that would surely be true for current games.
    There are games with minute-long loading screens, and you check and see 100% on one core for decompressing stuff/compiling shaders/whatever, 20% of another core to render loading screen animations, and that's it - actually I wish someone would benchmark that (idea for April Fools next year perhaps? :)). Those benefit from single-core performance, even if you don't see it on FPS graphs.
    There are also games that have one thread in critical path that everything else has to wait for, and those benefit from increased single core performance as well.
    Really, this was salvageable, they just had to screw this up with this "internal guidance" rubbish.

      I wouldn't have a problem with this statement if they actually meant anything by it. If they guaranteed like AMD did that this new socket will be compatible with the next-gen CPU's then I would feel it would be less of a blow. Unfortunately, there are no guarantees with Intel. It seems like every generation, here's a new CPU and you have to buy a new motherboard to use them. It seems damn shady.

      AMD has done the exact same thing both in the past and present.
      There's loads of older Ryzen boards, which can't take the Ryzen 9 chips, for instance.
      Also there are certain technologies which means you have to make a new chipset, like a new type of ram being the standard.
      Keep in mind, that motherboard makers also have to sell boards so both Intel and AMD is sometimes forced to make a new chipset.
      And then there's the biggest argument of them all, most people arn't changing cpu's that often.
      So while it's great that some of the older boards can take the new chips, it's not always the best solution.

      Orcawhale Sure, but the lack of 12-16 core support doesn’t stop you from running a 3700X to replace a 1700, even on the crappiest boards. Yes, if you want PCIe 4.0, you need a new mobo, but if everything seems to work, you can keep your old mobo for 4 years. AM3 was similar, you can actually update the bios on some AM2/2+ and install an AM3 CPU on it if you didn’t need DDR3 or other upgrades at the time.

      So chances are that the next generation, won't use AM4.

    For Intel 8th to 9th gen CPUs, quad core is ~126 mm^2 die area, hexa is ~149.6 mm^2, and octa is ~174 mm^2. At 0.8 mm thickness with a IHS thickness of 2 mm and assuming TIM is 1 mm, this translates to a package thermal resistances of:
    Quad = ~0.167666 °C/W
    Hexa = ~0.141733 °C/W
    Octa = ~0.122218 °C/W
    Deca ~= 0.107636 °C/W
    GN's 22 mm x 9 mm die size for deca core match with the 24 mm^2 increase for every 2 cores added to a die.
    Since the IHS is then thickened, we need to take into account the additional thermal resistance added. Additionally, thermal spreading increases the amount of area available for cooling and reduced power density. Both need to be factored in and increase the cooling surface.
    The reduction og 0.3 mm of silicon and added 0.3 mm of copper will alter the package thermal resistance to:
    Quad = ~0.154676 °C/W
    Hexa = ~0.130874 °C/W
    Octa = ~0.112941 °C/W
    Deca ~= 0.099526 °C/W
    However, at 250 W of power being pumped in and dissipated as heat, this equates to a drop in temps by the following:
    Quad = ~3.2 °C
    Hexa = ~2.7 °C
    Octa = ~2.3 °C
    Deca ~= 2.0 °C
    If you delid, with a 250W load, you'll see drops of *up to* the following:
    Quad = ~35.5 °C
    Hexa = ~29.6 °C
    Octa = ~25.6 °C
    Deca ~= 22.5 °C
    All of this is theoretical
    Intel boosted clocks from 8th to 9th as well as thickening the die. I don't expect there to be a meaningful temperature difference between the 9th gen and "10th" gen.

It's hard to get the cores to time up and layer your images properly if they're across multiple cores, and joining threads constantly can lead to issues. Most multi-core processes in games are more calculations which need multiple threads so the program can continue rendering, while the program does it's calculations for position, collision boxes, shadows, etc in the background; mostly because that stuff can be calculated and the time in which the calculation is done isn't really important.

Let's say another year, a year and a half for platform maturity and for the software to catch up...
    That's 2023 at the earliest.

    The USB 4.0 spec is in the works and some servers at torontos IXP have the ports on the boards, standard A port but the C port would likely end up coming in the future. I heard this from my old professor whose main job is system administration. He brought me back a couple stickers because he would regularly fly out. He said they do not function because the spec hasn't been finalized. If that is true it's likely those ports will never be used because they were designed when the spec was calling to use current processors of the time, but like you mentioned Intel is touting using more pins for future protocols and hardware standards, USB 4.0 is likely being designed around that pin layout now.
    I'm also speculating that a new storage protocol is in the works, as in NVMe 8.0 or 16.0 which would definitely need a larger pin layout and more lanes.

    Finally. Intel is being forced to *do something*. Feels like they would have kept giving tiny upgrades to their 4c/8t line for the next several years if AMD hadn't stepped up. Now, even without a die shrink, it's starting to look like my 6700k could use an upgrade that's not a piddly 10% difference. I'll wait though, I want the new changes to mature a bit and may still hold out for a die shrink.
