    Very sad to see B450/X470 won't be supporting on going future ryzen chips. I really hope there is a real reason for this and it's not simply an arbitrary thing designed to pressure consumers into having to upgrade their board. I bought a b450 board to go with my 3600 because I wanted an ITX board and X570 ITX didn't exist at the time (nor would it have offered any meaningful additional features b450 didn't offer in that form factor outside of pcie4.0) and it's kind of annoying to see that I'm apparently stuck on a dead end chipset.

    AMD can easily support 4000 chips even on a320(some a320s even support 3950x) b350 and x370 boards, let alone x470 and b450. That BIOS chip size excuse is complete BS, some new x570 boards have 16MB chips and they will support 4000 chips. Even for some BS reason 16MB chips don't have the storage for all the AM4 chips, motherboard makers can easily make 2 bios versions with, let's say, only Ryzen 1000 and 2000 chip support, and another with 3000 and 4000 chip support. That is IF AMD allows them to. After all it all comes to money, and AMD is a company. And companies need to make as much money as possible. Except this move will hurt AMD rather than helping it.

    • @Wheres_my_Dragonator
      @Wheres_my_Dragonator 4 года назад +10

      I doubt amd gains anything from not supporting an older board. It's the board manufacturers that are losing money by supporting older boards. If anything, amd gains more money by supporting old boards since only the cpu matters for them. Why would amd intentionally cut off support unless it's just not feasible?

      @@Wheres_my_Dragonator The only reason they're not compatible is bios storage yet some BIOSes have enough storage space so it's definitely possible. I just don't think that the average Joe that walks into a store to buy a mobo is going to recognize the difference between the b450 tomahawk and tomahawk max or will assume that since one b450 board or x470 board can do it all can do it. It is not so simple. OEM partners either have to buy certain parts from the big three or pay them if they want to use their products or features. For example buildzoid recently covered a older EVGA board, during (board's time) Nvidia forced OEM's to buy their SLI support chip, when in reality that chip had no purpose. Today they may not force partners to buy extra parts anymore, but instead just taking a slim piece from the sales. It is a common practice in other industries, so why would it be any different here.

    I'd actually prefer a 'downgrade' to B550, the X570 chipset fan bugs the hell out of me (I'm surprised there are no aftermarket kits). The fan on the Asus X570-P is meant to be silent but that is BS. I can hear it from 1,500 rpm, which just happens to be about the minimum because the XFX 5700XT THICC2 (it was cheap and it doesn't actually suck) blocks it. Asus or XFX is out of spec as the only way to get the card seated is to push from the back of the motherboard too. Currently waiting for a THICC3 heatsink kit to be sent out, but there's some sort of logistics issue...
    It's so tight that I had to break the PCIe x16 locking tab when I removed it (the metal look is cosmetic, it's actually not that strong) to track down where the coil whine was coming from. I've currently got the GPU to keep spinning which does help a lot, but that little bastard will spin up in games.
    Anyway, only piping PCIe 4.0 to the top x16 and M.2 slots is a decent compromise which would be fine for most people. Especially if it gets rid of the useless PCH heatsink (most of the surface area is thick plastic) and I not sure why Asus thought putting a fan in the area normally covered by GPU heatsink was a good idea. There is something wrong with the x570 chipset, it drains power even when not in use (just a sound card), I could understand if I was moving data between the 2nd m.2 and a bunch of data drives. Steve's BFF did a video, I wonder if AMD did respond? 🤔
    PS: Asus' AI suite also sucks as it won't display the chipset temp (just motherboard and CPU, package temps) when there are actually NINE temp sensors on the motherboard!! I just want VRM (which isn't even labelled) and chipset. Plus, Asus is about the only company that doesn't offer control over the chipset fan, despite loads of requests.
    /I'm glad I got that out of my system. Wooooosa....

    I just did a rebuild on my computer a month ago. Wanted to wait for the 4000's, but computer was dying. Didn't want a x570 because I didn't like having to deal with a proprietary fan on the board. So I went with the B450 Tomahawk MAX partly because it was a new design with larger bios to handle the extra cpu numbers. I went with a 1600af and just 16GB of 2666 to save a little with the idea that latter I would get an 8 core 4000 and 32GB of what ever speed memory would be best for it. I made these choices based on over a year of looking into options and how things went with the 3000's vs older boards and AMD's "claim" to support am4 to 2020. Now they pull this crap? I mean...not at all, no. If you bought the first generation of motherboards, you could use the first two generations of chips, and the better designed motherboards support third generation.
      Now, we're in, functionally, the third wave of boards, and if you wanted to do a build today, say your a320 fails, ports fail, whatever..you could buy a $160 x570 motherboard. And that's it. Everything else, including your first gen 1600 works. You can buy a motherboard, today, to fit a first gen ryzen CPU. I don't know what the future brings, I don't know what x670 will support, but that means four years of NEW motherboards that will take that perfectly usable OG chip.
      That's a cycle I'd like to see pushed forward.
      Compare that to intel, where sometimes they had sockets that lasted a _single year_. Say you bought a chip in 2014. The chip is still good. It still WORKS. But in 2019, half the RAM slots on your motherboard dies. You're either hunting for a a three generation old motherboard, to go with your still fully functional CPU that gets you 60+ frames in most games you play, used, or buying a new CPU.
      Nothing lasts FOREVER. But with AMD's system, you have overlap. When Intel rolls out that new socket for their 10'th series chip...how many people will have a legitimate need for that? Currently, no one. It doesn't do anything for you, functionally.

    @Gamers Nexus The tech media just has been burned from this decision as well, recommending B450/X470 for such a long time and not putting much more pressure on AMD to get B550 in order backfires right now. If you had known in advance that X570 is "more future proof" in CPU support, that would have been a major selling point for these high end boards and would have made AMD look stupid to not have a B550 chipset available on time to cover the entry- to mid-level market. But the tech media exonerated AMD on this point because B450/X470 was still readily available and at least it was assumed from many to be compatible with Zen 3. So where is the rage in the tech media now?
    It also highlights that their current platform strategy isn't great at all. Their reliance on Asmedia just bit them hard with the 500 series (having to sacrifice their I/O die for X570 and the need to delay B550 for a year). AMD should put much more effort into their platform (timing and feature wise). As Gamers Nexus argued about in the past about letting third parties handling the chipset production we now clearly see the downsides, as no third party has the same incentive as AMD to do it right and on time. It is a contract but the existance of the company doesn't rely on it. In my opinion this whole mess shows that more integration is in order here to have more control over their own platform (e.g. in-house-development of the chipset) and lessen the reliance on third parties. It is not a distraction, the platform is an important part of their core business.

    So, AMD says they look at the comments and listen to their customers? Well listen to this, it's total bs that AMD is saying nothing under B550 will work with next gen Ryzen. Maybe it wouldn't be as egregious if B550 came out a year sooner, but instead you have all of us people who bought new 3000 chips with older B-class motherboards because we didn't need X-class boards. If the new B-class was out sooner, we would have bought it over the older B450, but it wasn't. So now that AMD screwed around and didn't get out B550 out in time, all of us who didn't need a premium motherboard are screwed when it comes to future upgrades. Thanks AMD. I understand that there is only so much room on a bios, but maybe you should have thought of that sooner and instructed manufacturers to keep that in mind when designing a board. And if it's too late now to add support for 4000 series on older motherboards, then you should have optional bios codes available that does away with support for older cpus and can support only 4000, or maybe 3000 and 4000 if they'll both fit. But seriously, AMD, it doesn't mean that much to stick with the same socket for 5 years if a ton of boards have no upgrade path now, even though the cpu will still physically fit in the socket. We all bought B450 because YOU said there would be backwards compatibility through this year. Now you're reneging? I hope AMD gets pushed back on their decision not to (even unofficially) support the 300 and 400 series Motherboards for Ryzen 4000 CPU's like they did with the 3000 series.
    Many 300 and 400 series boards were built with cheap components, since motherboard vendors have never really taken AMD boards seriously until X570. There were however really good boards too, like the Crosshair series for example (I own a X370 Crosshair VI Extreme) which are massively overkill for pretty much any Ryzen CPU.
    Its been shown that PCI-E 4.0 used to work fine on the better boards, but because AMD didn't want confusion about which boards can handle it and which can't, they Removed that functionality in the AGESA code. (Wish someone could create a modded BIOS with it re-enabled) I'm guessing AMD is once again trying to weed out those weaker 300 and 400 series boards while sacrificing everyone who bought good ones.
    I don't buy the excuse i've heared about the BIOS ROM size not being large enough, as thats why the MSI Max series of boards were made (32mb), and the Current largest BIOS size for my ASUS board is about 10mb. I always build my computers to last a good 8 years, and resell parts if possible, so as not to add to the mountains of E-waste. I refuse to upgrade my perfectly servicable high end motherboard and feed into useless consumerism.

      @Comeonregister Having upgraded from a Phenom II X6 System, I'm well aware of how long AMD's sockets last. It was pretty clear that Zen 3 was going to be on AM4 from the getgo. My point was that there doesnt (yet) appear to be any legitimate reason for locking compatibility with past generation boards. The pin count is the same, the boards still use DDR4, PCIE-4.0 is on the CPU side, there doesnt appear to be any power constraints, and i doubt BIOS size is an issue as was claimed.
      Sacrificing everyone who bought good or high end boards, because others bought cheap A320/B350 boards which *might* cause issues is insulting to the DIY audiences intelligence at the very least. You don't throw the baby out with the bathwater.

      not every board maker had that 32gb of rom, thus your ire would be better directed at them for not using them universally. Maybe we can expect MSI to enable support due to using the larger rom size. From what i'm told the cost of those 32gb roms are significantly higher than 16gb which may be a factor.

    Second, My Asus Maximus VII Formula kicked the bucket. I was planning upgrading to the 5900x and a x570 board. Preferably the Dark Hero but both are impossible to get and both Asus and AMD have no time table for re-release and I know that the bots will swoop in and get them before I have a chance any way. I always buy the top I can when I need to upgrade then re-up every 6 or so years, picking up used stuff along the way. With DDR4 and now PCIe 4.0 it was time to re-up
    Currently I can get a B550 ROG Strix-E Gaming which has the passive cooled Chipset, which is why I wanted the Dark Hero X570, Passive chipset cooling (I hate additional fans) + Additional PCIe 4.0 lanes (I just know they are faster)
    I constantly Photo/Video Edit, Draft in CAD and create 3d Renderings. SO...I was stoked about the jump in speed with PCIE 4.0 and wanted to run 2 M.2 Nvme Drives to speed up my work flow. OS on one and Storage and Scratch disk on the other. I'm still a little lost with the difference between the capabilities of B550 and X570.
    If I am running Windows on one of the M.2 slots at PCIe 4.0 NVME would the other m.2, by default, run at PCI3 3.0, Do I have that correct?
    Also, If the GPU is running at PCIe 4.0 would the m.2 running the OS drop to PCIe 3.0? I'm a little confused.

    To all you guys with A320, B350, and $80 b450 boards... did you really expect to actually upgrade CPU’s without a motherboard change? Like.. sure currently Zen is behind but I’m sure there will be $100 options for B550 if you want Ryzen 4000, and if you’re concerned about $100 why don’t you spend that money on a better graphics card instead? AMD said they would support AM4 until 2020. A 3300x and 3100 are both new processors that will work on at least some B350 boards. They technically held true to their promise. Sure you may feel mislead, but they’re a multi billion dollar corporation. They don’t care about you. Over 90% of CPU sales are of people that buy new boards for a new system, if were actually going to put a Ryzen 4000 chip in your b350 board, you are the minority of a minority. AMD is in a good position now, they don’t have to be as competitive. Now they are going to start focusing more on server chips and mobile chips because that’s where money is really made, and where they can really gain more market share. AMD already has 90% of new cpu purchase market share, not much room to grow there. But they have less than 10% of the server market. If you were a corporation trying to make as much money as possible, what would you focus on?
    We have to remember that both intel and AMD are simply corporations with shareholders. They want their customers to be happy, but they will always prioritize shareholders first. The only reason they want the customer to be happy is because that’s what sells processors. Also remember that AMD doesn’t make much of any money from motherboard sales, so they simply did what they believed was the right choice in order to assure that people don’t put processors in boards that motherboard manufacturers may or may not still be doing bios updates for. It sucks for very, very few people relative to their overall market.

      AMD unofficially told Tech Deals that they could support Ryzen 4000 on older mainboards but they decided they wouldn't. Main reason for that is that the are too many different boards with differently sized bios chips. And the BIOS chip for Ryzen 4000 series needs to be 32MB big. From all the B450 boards only the MSI MAX lineup boards would qualify for that. So basically Tomahawk Max, etc. As for x470 I don't know. You can look up Tech Deals last livestream where talked about this.

    • @jasonhurdlow6607
      @jasonhurdlow6607 4 года назад

      @@Matruchus Close, but not quite right. 4000 support doesn't require a 32MB BIOS. For instance Gigabyte x570 motherboards (like my x570 Aorus Master) will support 4000 chips, and they only have 16MB BIOS (x2 in the case of the Master). They're saying there isn't room on the some BIOSes to *add* support for 4000 on top of what's already there. The answer is disturbingly obvious: offer more that one BIOS option to users, one that supports older CPUs and one that supports newer CPUs (including 4000), but drops older/less-used CPUs. For motherboards with BIOS flash-back, it's super easy. For ones without it, they just need to maintain some overlap (ideally). AMD is either being a) Lazy, or b) Intentionally Intel-ish (in all the worst ways).

    Allow me to rephrase that title
    "AMD being a d!ck explained"
    The "motherboards have limited ROM capacity" is just total BS from AMD.
    1- even some of the Expensive X570 boards have 16MB ROM and these boards will support 4th gen, meanwhile B450 Tomahawk Max from MSI has 32MB and will not support 4th gen.
    2- most of us bought B450 boards under the impression it will support 4th gen based on their missleading claims.
    3- if im not mistaken AMD claimed to support AM4 boards until and during 2020 in one of their older slides.
    4- you can simply drop 1st gen support form boards that are going to upgrade to 4th gen.
    5- most of "techtubers" and other reviewrs recommended X570 boards ONLY if you care about PCI-E 4..
    never have AMD, board partners nor reviewers stated that 4xx boards will be obsolete in the very near future.
    6- B550 was delayed almost a whole year... meaning that me and many others who were trying to guarantee future compatibility for upcoming CPUs were forced to either buy over-heating / over-priced X570 boards or just buy any decent 4xx board.
    Its obviously easier to blame us consumers for having boards with "small ROM chips" instead of making board partners take the fall for their delays...
    Guess its our fault now B550 was delayed

      @Shirou Kotomine Here is a list of the main differences. Which one is better is going to depend on your build and preferences:
      CPU:
      X570 supports older and newer processors. B550 only supports gen 3 and newer.
      Storage:
      x570 supports two PCIe 4.0 m2 drives. B550 only supports one with PCIe 4.0 and another with 3.0. So if you plan to use two nvme drives, and need really fast transfers speeds on both, then go x570.
      PCIe 16x (GPU) slots:
      x570 supports PCIe 4.0 for multiple 16x PCIe slots. B550 only supports PCIe 4.0 for the top slot (GPU) with PCIe 3.0 for the rest. This is probably not a big deal unless you plan to run SLI, or a bunch of extra cards, or something exotic like that. Even then, a graphics card isn't going to be bottle-necked by a 3.0 slot.
      Networking:
      X570 supports 5 and 10 gig lan. B550 only supports 1 gig.
      USB:
      X570 supports more USB 3.2 ports and more overall ports.

    • @KL-lt8rc
      @KL-lt8rc 4 года назад

      @Shirou Kotomine You could add another M2 drive, but the read/write speeds won't be as good for the second one because it will be using PCIe 3.0 instead of 4.0. Not sure about the audio. I think x570 boards draw more power in general, which is why they generally have cooling on the boards. Also the LAN difference doesn't seem to be universal. I've run across some x570 boards still using 1 gig. And unless you're transferring stuff around a local network a lot, with 5 or 10 gig switches, the bottleneck will still be your ISP.

    G'day Steve,
    Thanks for trying to help us understand the differences in the chipsets instead of just making a video whinging that Zen 3 won't work in pre X570/B550 M/B (like so many other channels), I'm not angry with this decision by AMD but just wondering what their actual wording for CPU to M/B compatibility was, either any release upto 2020 or including any release including 2020?
    the Description of USB Naming made me spit my cup of tea all over my screen & Keyboard, I have my own naming scheme for USB which is:

    the fast blue one,
    the superfast funny lookin' one

    Why is everyone so sad about x470 not supporting ryzen 4000 series? I bought z170 with 6600k and that was a dead end, excluding 7700k or 7600k which didn’t show much improvement. It was and is with intel, so at least amd offered a bit more. Besides, if you do have an x470 with a 3000 series ryzen, why tf would you upgrade to 4000 series?

    As it turned out later on, the biggest differences between B450 and B550 next to the differences between ZEN3/ZEN2 support:
    B450:
    - Does not support PCI-E bifurcation
    - Supports only 64GB RAM
    B550:
    - Supports PCI-E bifurcation
    - Supports 128GB RAM

    So I know this is over a year later, but the 3000 series Zen+ support isn’t entirely defunct. This may be an edge case but I purchased a Gigabyte B550i Aorus Pro AX micro-ITX board. The box explicitly states that it is incompatible with 3400G and 3200G, yet when I put it all together, it worked. My best guess as to why it was advertised as such has to do with the fact that XMP profiles may be extremely hit or miss and you obviously won’t get PCIE Gen 4 for Zen + CPU/APUs.
    This was only meant as a stopgap for this PC so I will have a 3700x in its place very soon.
    The compatibility in short, is variable for zen +.

    i am so pissed off that they drag their asses getting the b550 out and when they do they say you can't use your current cpu? On top of that you can't use their new cpu on your current board you bough because you didn't want to overspend on an X570? Fuck that, just going to get a new GPU and not bother upgrading anymore. I wouldn't buy this series now anyway wait till the AM5..this is a screwjob gen.

      @@Anderson_Hwang Agreed. The only reason I even upgraded to Zen 2 was I was able to get the 3900x for $450 on a discount for 12 cores and 24 threads for rendering workloads. I will hold out until Zen 4 at a minimum of 30% on IPC performance. Then I might consider upgrading my 2700x build.

    Honestly what AMD is currently doing with AM4 is not that different from Intel's whole Z270/Z370 incompatible thing. In fact I would argue it's worse cuz Intel made a very clear cut, while AMD is like "well we aren't technically wrong so you can't sue use but we want you to buy new boards so fuck you all"

    There some conflicting information shown in this video, your charts say B550 wont have pcie 4.0 but the image at 15:00 shows B550 is pcie 4.0 not 3.0 like you say? Would seem odd if amd went backwards in evolution on the b550 and removed pcie 4.0 to leave in old pcie 3.0 like the 4xx boards?

    • @BaerentoeterLP
      @BaerentoeterLP 4 года назад +3

      I think the chart you are referencing is about the chipset, the B550 PCIe 4.0 is directly connected to the CPU instead of through the chipset, which does have PCIe 3.0 lanes.

    • @haukionkannel
      @haukionkannel 4 года назад +2

      Yep... 4.0 from cpus, 3.0 from chipset. That is one way of making b550 cheaper!

      What already was the case with b450 and x470 boards... Before AMD shafted people again and blocked the CPU lanes to 3.0 on these platforms.
