      Console architecture and desktop architecture is not directly comparable even if they are the "same gen tech" fro same company. Beside, we know for a fact that console will have CPU with feature from both zen2 and 3.
      For a 8c/16t on console land, if we we're lucky, we are looking at linear from 1c/1t to 6c/12t on PC land, and basically logarithmic for anything more.
      That's assuming porting is done right (which it never were and never will) plus dev spend lots of resources on optimizing the port (yea... not happening most of the time).

I was never a huge fan of the 6700k, looking back on it I heavily regretted not going for the 5820k at the time, I listened to reviews that pushed the "just Overclock it to 4.7-4.8 its easy and guaranteed" well it wasn't for me. Mine hit 4.6 stable with a pretty high voltage (1.375v most of its life. 1.4 in the last year when it quit being stable at 1.375) and had nothing else to give.
    For gaming yes. It was grand. I guess. But for photography I never felt it was a big upgrade from my dead 2600k, I would have benefitted from the extra cores on the 5820k for my particular usage. The 6700k was a rig I didn't listen to myself on and always regretted it. I did not make that mistake on the 3900X
    Biggest gaming improvement I saw was the lows in BFV. The 3900X eliminated the horrid stutters the 6700k could hit when the physics went nuts. I game at higher resolutions so I'm not very cpu bound so overall any decline in gaming performance is negligible whereas my productivity performance is many times better which is a trade I'll happily make.

    Older Intel CPU prices are simply ridiculous! I was forced into buying a new computer when Overwatch was released, that is in spring 2016. The only sane option at the time was i5-6500 on H110 chipset mb, anything else would cost twice as much for maybe some 10% to 20% of performance improvement. The only viable upgrade I can get for it without replacing the motherboard and ram is probably i7-7700 and it still going to cost me more than just dumping this pc and buying the whole combo of B450 motherboard + RAM + R5 3600!

    This review is disappointing to be honest:
    The 6600k is a 3.5 GHz stock up to 3.9 GHz turbo, if you overclock to 4.8 GHz: +1.3 from stock and +0.9 from turbo.
    The 6700k is a 4.0 GHz stock up to 4.2 GHz turbo, if you overclock to 4.8 GHz: +0.8 from stock and +0.6 from turbo.
    I don't understand what's the point on overclocking only one of the 2 cpu's, even less when you are overclocking only the one that benefits less from the overclocking, attributing all of the difference in performance between a 6600k and a 6700k to hyperthreading is a mistake when their stock clock speeds are quite different, one of the selling points of the 6600k was how much overclocking headroom you had over the stock speed.

      Wait to see what Zen 3 brings to the table. I've heard launching anywhere from January 2020 (doubtful) to August 2020.
      Not only will Zen 3 offer 15% IPC which already damn good on Ryzen 3000 series, they're also consolidating the cache to a single I/O die and (at least in my humble opinion) probably going to double the number of CCX interconnects per core like they did recently on Threadripper 3960X / 3970X.
      If you don't totally understand what I just said - think about it like this. Intel still crushes in gaming because it has a much higher memory bandwidth than Zen as well as slightly faster clock speeds. 1st Gen was quite bad in this regard. Even comparing say the R9 3900X to an i9 9900K the 9900k is a clear winner edging out 10-20% depending on the title.
      Enter Threadripper 3970X with an improved package compared to Ryzen 3000 series. Much faster memory bandwidth. In gaming? It's within 5% of the 9900k and in some cases beating the 9900k by 1-2%. (Look at HardwareUnboxed's review of the new Threadripper CPUs)
      But yes, comparing a $2000 HPC monstrosity to a $600 desktop CPU isn't really proportional. Yet AMD clearly figured something out with Zen and how to leverage Infinity Fabric scaling.
      What will AMD do with Zen 3? I'm guessing we'll see those memory bandwidth improvements on even the mid-tier R5 4600X. You're then talking about a $200-250 6c/12t CPU coming to within 5% +/- of Intels "King of Gaming."
      Speculation of course. Check it out for yourself. But definitely wait for Zen 3 to launch. It might just be the first unavoidably good Ryzen series yet clearly beating or matching Intel in everything while remaining 50% cheaper.

      @Malus1531 4 года назад

      @jvalex18 Uh no, pretty much the complete opposite of that. Only some games can make good use of many cores, but any game can make use of more speed. If you are entirely CPU bottlenecked, a 25% increase in per-core performance (frequency in this case) will lead to a 25% increase in fps. That's a big if, I agree my +25% Cinebench often won't translate to +25% fps because of bottlenecks elsewhere, but if a game needs more CPU power then more frequency will always help. You can't say the same about a 25% increase in core count, which could potentially do nothing if the game isn't programmed to use more threads.
      You say "games nowadays care about cores" like it's mutually exclusive, it's not. Games can better utilize more cores of late sure, but that doesn't mean they care about per-core speed any less. It's just as beneficial as it ever was, as say 3700X vs 2700X proves. Speed is what made 3rd gen good for gaming, 12/16 cores did pretty much nothing.

    • @Malus1531
      @Malus1531 4 года назад

      @jvalex18 Cores and per-core performance* Whether you achieve per-core performance through IPC or frequency doesn't really matter to the game.
      I agree, I switched my 6600k for an 8700k for the same reason. That still doesn't mean the 6600k can't see significant gains from an overclock. 25% per-core performance gain is meaningful. I'm typing on my 6600k right now, honestly pretty happy with it paired with 1070 @ 1440p, where it only needs to feed ~60 fps. I really enjoyed 6700k. I had the option to go with a 7700k but clearly Intel peaked at 2-4th gen. First now with 12th gen did we really get something good from Intel. So when picking when to build I settled on a good deal 6700k. Such a improvement from a I5 2400. Was not going to let that disappointment ever happen agen since that doomed me from having the epic 2th and 4th gen CPU's just because 2400 was 'good enough'. It really made no sense to skimp out on the CPU.
    Was possible to upgrade and run 32GB 3000Mhz ram on my 6700k. Never OC it much and have ran it stock on a NH D14 for most of the time. Never found a reason to go faster and even at full load it was not very loud. How about that a overkill cooler helps. Still a grate system and makes me very sad that I did not get some of that 2500k or 4790k action!! The worst thing about 6700k is that the older stuff looks so good in comparison! 6700k never catch a brake! It sucks looking forward or backwards!
    Still have a use for my I5 2400. But to think that old thing can have lasted me to 2019 and still not really hold one back?? That is just bonkers. But 2400 was really not enough even for Fallout 4 and just stupid AMD drivers :c. I just had to get something better and 6700k fit the budget. And seems like I was right that there was nothing better to get for years to come.

    It's like you've read my mind Steve! I'm currently running a 6700K on Z170, and I've finally managed to get hold of a Ryzen 3950X in the UK, came yesterday, although I am missing a motherboard, I want the MSI X570 Unify, but prices are $30 more than it was in October, so hoping there's a price drop over the post Christmas period.
    I've wanted to see the figures, especially Premiere, for a comparison, as I video edit more than I game. But this video definitely confirms I was correct to stay with the 6700K until now, definitely wasn't worth making a move until late this year. I usually do wait at least 4 to 5 years before a CPU upgrade though. I'll only be upgrading CPU and motherboard this time around as I'm already running nVME and the 32GB 3200 GSkill RAM will transfer nicely, and I always offset my GPU upgrade so the 1080Ti won't be upgraded for at least 2 more years - it's a good way to spread costs and you see a bump in performance with each "tic toc" (CPU/GPU) upgrade.
