      Same. I'm trying to stretch one more gen to 14th generation now, 4.7GHz 6700k is holding strong still, but I'm itching to move to DDR5. Honestly, gaming is still fine. I can lock in at 144Hz for most games I play outside of super-CPU-bottlenecked stuff like main cities in MMOs. Shooters like Destiny 2, Warzone, and Hunt: Showdown are all running at or above 120hz locked so it's hard to be motivated to buy.

      +imapie4688 In at least one video the kitchen was green-screened in because none of the sets were ready and they needed to get videos done.
      +ChaosCorrupter I don't think any of the actual sets they'll be using are ready yet. They've resorted to mixing it up between the Orange wall(which I think is in the library or upstairs) and the WAN show set(the one in this video) until the rest are ready... and I think they're rebuilding the kitchen set, though I don't know for sure.

      There is a 5 percent difference between the 4790k and the 6700k. If you want to buy something newer than the 4790k, buy a 5820k and overclock it. The cost is very close to the 6700k and it os a better cpu.

      +mandeFTW You can do this with a lot of brands of motherboards .. my Asus Sabertooth 990FX R2 has a header on the MB where you can attach a momentary switch and if you press it it will boot directly to uefi. You can launch a program in windows and it will reboot your system to uefi. You can use Asus's software (tho its junk and causes more issues than it helps) or 3rd party software to OC in Windows without having to go into uefi. I'm sure the one he is talking about has those features also. EDIT: using a windows program to OC your system is good for a general idea as to what to set the UEFI settings to but not a good thing to use as your main overclock. It can cause issues during boot and waking from sleep or hibernate.

    I'm still blazing through everything with my i7 6700k @ 4.2Ghz Turbo. Same 16GB DDR4 Ram. Only just recently upgraded my GPU to a RTX 2060 Super from a GTX 1060 6G. (Which is still an amazing card, BTW)
    Just went through Modern Warfare last weekend with every possible setting ultra, 1080p/60fps, DX12/RT, etc. and it didn't stutter once. Turned turbo off the CPU and the same.
    I don't feel I wasted a penny. I'm also going to be happy with this and not full on get into 1440p gaming (Which I can do usually above 60fps) until I can upgrade my MB/CPU next year.
    I know AMD is making moves, but I'm going to rock with Intel again next year for my Upgrade. The rock solid performance sells it for me every time.

    OC'ing indeed shorten lifespan of cpu but avg lifespan of an cpu is about 10-12 years so if you do oc it to max lets say its new life span is about 5-7 years that really doesn't change anything because in 5-7 years dozens of new hardware will come up and make you're rig look old as fk, so you are bound to change you're cpu and gpu even if you don't overclock.

      It depends. I've seen OC'ed CPU's that needed a downward adjustment every few months to stay stable. I've also seen OC'ed CPU's running 24/7 for over 10 years without any sign of degradation. Not for nothing it's called a silicon lottery.

    • @taz874
      @taz874 5 лет назад

      I doubt a moderate overclock will half its lifespan. Maybe a more extreme overclock might. I've seen plenty of overclocked CPUs from the sandy bridge era still kicking today and those CPUs are like 7-8 years old today.

      Hadn't had the time to finish editing my videos, just got the PS5 and trying it out in the meantime.
      my gpu before:
      I had GTX 1080 superclocked by msi!
      if you thinking about overlock:
      Do it. I didn't bother overclocking too it felt too excessive until now. Maximized performance + stuttering is gone.
      Friends told me to upgrade cpu, need those higher core count but tbh, overclocking is good for now it runs games.
      READ this if you own this cpu:
      also, just because this skylake cpu is generations behind the newest guy, that doesn't make it shit. This was the best generation to ever come out during 2014, and they didn't lie when they said it's future proof. 6 years later it's running the flagship gpu price to performance to date and rtx as fuck.
      Metro exodus RTX max performance:
      I ran metro exodus at 4k with ray tracing turned on and set to extreme 1080p im at 60fps and at 4k im at 40fps and thats rlly good considering this game has some heavy graphic settings and they're all set to the max with raytracing and for $400 that's insane.
      death stranding DLSS 2.0 max performance:
      no ray tracing support but it has DLSS 2.0 in the settings and you can set to "Quality" or "performance" i chose quality and maxed out the highest settings to epic/veryhigh. Then installed a reshade mod and tweaked some fake hdr and sharpness to look photorealistic and both 4k & 1080p is constant 60fps beautiful.
      GTA V with the natural vision remastered reshade mod installed
      4k @54-60fps on ultra
      Temps:
      with all things nice, only thing i notice is now the cpu temps r higher than before at 78-80c which never got this high before, but that's just the added heat in the case because of this gpu getting hot over a prolonged amount of time. I took my case cover off and turn on my AC and the temps r now at 72-74c I'm okay. 92% load on cpu when I'm playing and streaming off OBS at the same time 1080HD@60fps at 6900 bitrate and 128 audio.
      verdict: I was worried that I might have to upgrade my cpu, but feeling superior 6 years ago being a flagship cpu, I'm glad I invested in it and I'm sticking to it until my pc BSOD lmfao. I care about fps and having the best looking graphics, and this card is too good once you set it in, it's amazing

    My Z170 Pro Gaming went over 1.4V at default bios settings. I would advice not to use any automatic solutions with Asus motherboards.

      So i tried to do the same as you did, 1.275 with + 0.005 offset, didnt worked for me, my pc crashed. Then i tried 1.300 didnt worked either so i got it on 1.325 again and now the + 0.005 offset (i couldnt figure out how to put it on standard again). My HWMonitor tells me i have a value of 1.388 to 1.408Vish, Min is 1.338V and max is 1.456V. But on Aida64 Extreme it tells me im on 1.328V and so does CPU-Z. How can i set a maximum for the voltage? I dont want my cpu to go higher then 1.4 again. Also my temps for the CPU are arround 80C ish during the 15min stresstest on RealBench (stress test passed btw). Is that too much?

    HELLO IN 2023. My last overclock before I retire my system. I got 5 GHZ today, stable at 1.48 volts. Yep. Sat at 4.9 1.44 for YEARS stable. Lucky? Kind of. PLL, OC, IO, SA volts all are up a few %.
    5 GHZ. I finally achieved my dream. I would try every 6 monts to a year. 4.9 forever, just wanted that 5. is 1.48 safe. DUNNO! But I hear people been doing 1.5 for years so I decided yolo.
    It can retire to it's base 4ghz clock to run my cnc which is complete overkill but still it can say I WAS GLORIOUS ONCE.

      Damn 5 GHZ is nuts haha, i just got this CPU and was wondering what kind of speeds i should aim for, seeing as i'm running it with an outdated hyper 212 evo cooler what would you say a stable overclock speed would be? I'm not trying to get the absolute most out of my CPU i just want it to run a bit faster. Would 4.4 GHZ be doable? The mobo is a gigabyte z170x gaming 3.
      Forgive me for asking but you seem 10x more knowledgeable on this than i am haha

    • @thenext9537
      @thenext9537 9 месяцев назад

      @@Boofski It is! But, even at 5ghz, its still short of modern day stuff like intel 13900k or 7800x3d. It just sits in a garage now at base clock running a cnc machine. I feel bad though, because it was such a good cpu but tech is such a little punk ass and evolves. Poor little buddy haha. For your clock, 4.6 should be pretty easy. I'd set volts to 1.45 and 4.6, run cinebench, 3dmark and some games see how it goes. I'd lower volts, test, lower test until you get issues.
      At this point though, 4.4 I think you could set pretty easily, and 4.6 is super common. 4.7 -4.9 not so much and 5+ is not very common at all. I upgraded to a amd 7800x3d but I'm proud I got that old cpu to get to 5 it was the dream. My new amd I can barely get like 100mhz now for OC so it's just not the same!

    Sort of a half assed guide. Especially if you're new
    Doesn't show on the software what numbers to look for/at. i.e HWMonitor has two voltages. CPU VCORE under your motherboard and VID under your CPU.
    Then you have two temperatures under both your motherboard and cpu... Which one do we look at now?
    7:50 and what the hell.. Changes the Voltage override without explaining what it does..

    • @bradleyd8359
      @bradleyd8359 7 лет назад

      VID is what the chip requests. VCORE is what you are getting. VCORE is the one you put into BIOS. The motherboard temps are for your motherboard, and the CPU temps are for the CPU... it's not rocket science. Personal unpopular opinion: skip the OCing. It's a waste.

      When I lower the voltage, how come I get higher temps? He said in the video that if you add more juice, that means it will heat up more. I find that's the opposite of what is happening in my rig sigh*

    Linus,
    I have a pretty comprehensive H20 cooling setup. I am moving from a SB i7-2600K on an Asus MB to a SL i7-6700K on an MSI Z170A Gaming M5 MB.
    Can't explain how immensely disappointed I was to discover how poorly the new HW overclocks compared to my 2700K. My prior 2700K setup used a multiplier of 52. I don't recal what voltage settings I used in BIOS, but I do remember tweaking a few different settings other than simply Vcore. At idle, the 2700K ran at 1.6Ghz @ 0.9V. Under load it would go to 5.2Ghz and 1.52V. The temps would hover in the 65-75C range. AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    My 5yr newer system (6700K) can only run at 4.7Ghz with 1.45V and remain stable.....WTF ? I have found reviews regarding my specific MB (gaming M5) suggesting it may not be the best overclocking MB for the 6700K. Great. Wish I found that review B4 purchase and install.
    SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
    Do you have any recommendations on MB's which will allow me to push the 6700K beyond 5Ghz on a comprehensive open loop H2O system?
    THX!

      Automatic mobo overclocking is much sketchier than manually overclocking. You get wayyyy higher voltage than necessary, voltage fluctuations, sometimes even thermal throttling from poorly managed temps/voltage. As opposed to manual, where you gradually step up specific voltages within safe ranges to get exactly the voltage/temperature you are comfortable with.

      Mobo overclocking doesn't always give good results.. I have an MSI z170a-g45 and applied the automatic overclocking settings in it, thinking that they would bring the 6700k up to about 4.4 ghz. I started up a game to try testing and the computer just blue screened. Apparently the mobo had done idk what but when I got into the bios the cpu was sitting at 4.8 ghz which.. It was crashing. So, don't always trust mobo overclocking.

      I got 2 sticks of 8GB (16GB kit) rated at 2133 MHz at 1.2 V CAS 14-14-14-35. Overclocked mine all the way up to 3000 MHz at 1.35 V CAS 15-15-15-36. Is it noticeably faster? Yes, 5-10% faster in benchmarks, and windows is more responsive qualitatively of course.

      Mines been running a motherboard pc profile for years at 4.4
      Done as you've got and it's easy stable 4.5, going up now to see what I can get at that voltage, what could you get from yours and are you air or water cooled?

    • @noblessus
      @noblessus 2 года назад

      @@GmoLargey Hey man sorry for the late reply. My particular Core i7 6700K seems to be able to run quite stably at 4.6 GHz at 1.34 volts VCORE. Even HIgh-end games seems quite stable at these settings. It does run into BSOD though if I do something like video transcoding using FFMPEG to encode H264 video. Therefore I bumped up the voltage to 1.38 volts and that seems to have reduced the BSOD quite significantly so that's what I'm running it at right now for a few months with no BSOD so far. I do use AIO water-cooling (CORSAIR Hydro Series H60) so that helps with temps I guess, since at idle the processor runs at about 35 Celsius and at peak while encoding video it rarely goes above 71 C.
      Unfortunately regarding the voltage, what I'm using to achieve 4.6GHZ is quite close to the 1.4v VCORE spec limit, so I guess 4.8Ghz ain't gonna happen for my particular CPU. I didn't win the CPU lottery. But I'm quite happy with the 0.6 GHz boost regardless.
      The BIOS settings I'm using to achieve 4.60Ghz (for an MSI Z170A GAMING M7 motherboard):
      OC Explore Mode: Expert
      CPU Ratio: 46
      Game Boost Function Control: "By Onboard Button"
      EIST: disabled
      Intel Turbo Boost: disabled
      CPU Core Voltage: 1.380V
      Intel C-State: Disabled
      Happy overclocking

      @@noblessus thanks so much, I found 4.6 the limit before it started crashing in games, 4.5 was ok but honestly didn't test much before resorting to that stable 4.4
      Literally just finished building the new rig, went 12700k and 3080ti, windows 10 and 11 both giving me absolute grief, never had to spend so long in command terminals just to install an os.

      thats called silicon lottery and new cpus perform better with same clock speed and gets to same clocks as before and i think chips will be very hot and use lot of power if clocks would be higher maybe it will be like 9590 what has 220w tdp and needs high end cooling and doesnt even perform that well

      ***** Well it works great. Some games will limit med because of the graphic card. Like Fallout 4 ultra 1080p was to demanding for my gtx680. But if i replace the GPU im certain Ultra 1080p would be easy again

    It's kinda hard to take your reviews as valid when you literally get sponsored by Intel and Nvidia.

    • @thefinder8087
      @thefinder8087 9 лет назад +8

      +Nukeclears Then don't watch them, find a tech channel that's sponsored by no one connected to the tech industry, and to find that out for yourself you'll have to hunt down the owner of the channel and make him take a lie detector. Some people can beat a lie detector so just go ahead and water board him too. It has been found that water boarding can produce false results so just go ahead and hire a psychic to read their mind. Then you'll have to hire another psychic to read the first psychic's mind to make sure they're not lying. Etc. The point is you are going to have to trust the reviewer, no matter who they are sponsored by. Some of them don't even tell you they're sponsored even if they are. If you don't trust Linus then stop watching.

    • @RoryMitchell00
      @RoryMitchell00 9 лет назад

      +Nathaniel Graham It is important to have full disclosure from reviewers, etc, since it allows the viewer/listener to judge the validity of what's being sold to them. So I think OP has the right to be skeptical, but that said, this is an overclocking guide, and about the only sales pitch here was the claim that overclocks with Skylake were more consistent than previous CPUs, which definitely needs objective sourcing, especially with so few consumers having them at this time. Plus, I don't remember previous CPU generations being known for "variation" in any significant way. But the rest of the video was simply useful information for beginner to intermediate level overclockers.
      My 6700K is running right now at 4.5GHz at a manual setting of 1.35V (which HWMonitor shows at 1.36V+ actual), so the idea that 4.6GHz is guaranteed is definitely questionable. I haven't had too much time to tweak or change other settings though (except to disable Intel Virtualization).

    Linus, I love you sir.
    I followed your Guide down to a T and I've got a Stable 1.325 v @ 4.7Ghz, I also changed to Adaptive CPU Core Voltage, and also changed the Additional Turbo Mode CPU Core Voltage to 1.350, just to give me a 0.025 v head-space in the BIOS.
    I get about 70 to 75 Degrees C with Load and I use a Coolermaster Nepton 240M with a Coolermaster Cosmos SE case.
    I'm also running an XMP Profile for my G.Skill Trident Z RAM, I've got 32GB of DDR4 @ 3200 Mhz and it's running like a charm.
    The motherboard I use is an ASUS Maximus VIII Hero it's perfect for me and it has everything that I need for a PC enthusiast.
    I am also using the Sapphire Radeon R9 Fury X (watercooled version) for my GPU.
    I really thank you a lot for your Guide and I've learned a lot from you.
    Next Video I'd love to see is a Guide on Overclocking the R9 Fury X.
