- Humans can live without sex, but we can’t live without love, intimacy, and community. So where does this leave Christian who are gay, who are also pursuing celibacy as a vocation? Pieter Valk helps us think through this question on a rich, theological, and practical level.
Pieter graduated from Vanderbilt University with Highest Honors in Chemistry in 2013. After graduating, Pieter studied at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary for a year with a focus on Lay Leadership and Culture-making.
Pieter is the founder and director of Equip Ministries, a Nashville based organization created to help churches become places where LGBT+ Christians could belong and thrive according to a traditional sexual ethic. See more here: equipyourcommunity.org
One of the most interesting projects Pieter is involved in is the Nashville Family of Brothers (familyofbrothers.org), a monastic-like community of Christian men devoted to pursuing celibacy together.

Amazing conversation - thanks so much Preston for hosting it!! :)
Thank you so much. Very encouraging and helpful information that I have been seeking for years.
Inspiring conversation! Beautifully speaks to the cracks vocationally single people face, and what their solutions look like. Thanks for the hope! Love from Calgary, Canada.
I'm just grateful that I can follow the Apostle Paul's advice to remain permanently unmarried and serve the Lord without distractions.
This interview was a good eye opening to things I would not think of because I first saw equip I thought it was all about conversion therapy but when you look of it it isn't that depends on if you see choosing to restrict sexual relations but on the whole this man's organization is not about changing people's sexuality but helping people who are LGBT thrive in the church with the basis of a traditional sexual ethic and I like how he realizes the way the church approaches LGBT has a very negative affect and I hope more christian has a conversation on LGBT is approached because it's not helpful and churches also needs to stop normalizing discrimination on LGBT and violence because this is only going to cause a great divide we need to approach this issue with kindness and love and stop spreading bias and stereotypes on LGBT like the STDs and pedophilia it only makes the issue worst so Pieter your organization can help LGBT be comfortable in addressing there issue without feeling shame and uncomfortable I wish all round the world christian churches can use this approach and stop normalizing hate
Am I the only one that caught the Princess Bride quote at the beginning? 🤣
Is there a thing like this for women?
Pieter Valk is giving me golden girls vibes with his brotherhood thing 😂😂🤣
When heard about Pieter I was very fascinated that he used gay christian instead of ex gay but I like how he said the word gay is now associated with gay and I think the church has a fear saying gay and I have watched so ex LGBT so say they are or struggling with same sex attraction but my opinion using the term ex gay is what is gay is it only being in a homosexual relationship and I find the term misleading because it's like saying ex straight is ex straight just not being in a heterosexual relationship now I know some ex gay will use the term because they no longer have any attraction to the same sex but I have a problem with the ex gays that have same sex attraction but not act on it I still believe you are gay or bisexual the term can be very misleading
The most important thing required for celibacy is a fake smile.
Really Preston? Pieter Valk?
Is he bad?
@@overcomingword1980 He's not a bad man, but he gives a bad message. Preston also needs to get a hobby.
