Terminal Velocity marks the first solo album by John Petrucci to be released in 15 years, as well as, his first through The Orchard Music on his Sound Mind Music record label. The artwork was created by Sean M. Smith at Echo Designlab (Stone Sour, Hollywood Undead, In This Moment). Terminal Velocity was written and produced by John Petrucci, recorded by James ‘Jimmy T’ Meslin and mixed and mastered by Andy Sneap (Judas Priest, Killswitch Engage, Arch Enemy).
The album sees the return of bassist Dave LaRue (Dixie Dregs, Flying Colors) who played on John’s debut solo album and subsequent G3 tours, as well as, an eagerly anticipated reunion with former Dream Theater drummer Mike Portnoy (Transatlantic, Winery Dogs, Sons Of Apollo). “It was awesome bringing Dave back to play bass on this album. He is just such a monster player who can handle anything you throw at him with tastefulness and unmatched musicality. His melodic approach to bass lines along with impeccable technique and groove for days really stands out on these tunes.”
Portnoy’s appearance on Terminal Velocity marks the first recording of the guitarist and his former bandmate in over a decade and the first since Portnoy left the band in 2010. “Having Mike play drums on this record was really special for me and he did an absolutely incredible job navigating the various styles and technical challenges my music presented in the way that only he can do. It was very cathartic for the both of us, I think, to be playing music together again after all these years and it really felt great! Mike’s spirited, intuitive and energetic playing truly helped to elevate these new songs to a level that I couldn’t be happier with.”
In the beginning of March 2020 while the COVID-19 global pandemic was unrelentingly reeking it’s havoc on the world and especially NY, John started working on the music that would make up Terminal Velocity at the DT Headquarters on Long Island with engineer Jimmy T at the helm. “All DT touring for the rest of the year was either being cancelled or postponed and even though I had already planned on starting the project this Spring, I suddenly found myself with many unanticipated months at home. Jimmy T and I would head into the DTHQ 5 days week for about 2 and a half months and, as I wrote and constructed the new tunes, he was right there capturing it all and turning it into a record. Initially, he programmed drums and we shared bass playing responsibilities just to get the ideas to a place where they sounded like completed and cohesive songs but we always anticipating that ‘work in progress’ drums and bass would eventually be replaced.”
The 9 songs on Terminal Velocity showcase John’s affinity for writing tightly-weaved guitar instrumental powerhouses that feature everything from monster riff breaks to passion-filled melodic themes worthy of film soundtracks, to all-out shred extravaganzas that leave the listener feeling like they just stepped off of a thrilling musical roller coaster ride. “Much like the songs on my first solo album, Suspended Animation, I wanted the new tunes to really showcase what I’m all about as a player and to give an up-to-date depiction of where I am musically and how I like to express myself on the instrument. It’s about capturing the attitude of the performances and of course as always, very much about capturing the tone that I’ve worked so hard over the years to develop and refine.”
Although a few of the songs that make up Terminal Velocity were actually written quite a long time ago and even played live but never properly recorded, over half the album’s content is new music that John created while in the studio during the quarantine. “I believe that making this record when I did really helped me to maintain a sense of stability and normalcy during such a crazy time in our history.” “It was encouraging for me and my family to embrace something so hopeful and positive as we faced a very uncertain future in the music industry and in the world and for that, I am truly grateful for having music be such a big part of my life.”

Seeing Portnoy and Petrucci played together after 10 years is one of the best things ever happen in 2020

Such a warm feeling... "I'm home!"
It's so touching that I'm crying to see Portnoy and Petrucci playing together. Portnoy~ I'm sad about the years that have been stained on your hair. I have really happy tears. ㅠㅠ

Every time I watch John play, I am torn between the desire to practice more and the desire to throw my guitar in the trash Lol... amazing...
practice, bruh ;-)
Haha! I liked that comment!
Love your comment.
John is such a technician, but he is always so musical it doesn't bother me. He has absolutely whooped my ass into a 10x more disciplined player over the last 25 years. He inspires me to play more than anyone ever has. Fortunately, 99% of that time is when I have a guitar or 2 a few feet away at most.
It's easier than ever to approach his technique with all this vidjas and interwebs and everything in between floating around. I had to do it the fucking HARD way...wearing tapes out, looking at (BAD) tabs like ?#@?? How the FUCK is that like THAT?? LOL...those were the days. Not really. What with these Fractals and Mark V plugins and such, you can get the tone for less than ever...it used to cost $10k at the minimum to have that kind of tone...plus a shitload of studio knowledge. Polished tones are like water these days, all you gotta do is learn how to drink it like a pro.
Practice till it hurts kids
@@rickfeith6372 Well said! John's technique is a joy to watch but he also fucking sings with the guitar.
@@Minenangel I love the singing....in my experiences, making a guitar sing is the best way to captivate an audience.
I've been at this sport for 30 years now, since I was a little snot nose 13 year old wearing Levis's and Metallica shirts. I thought I could play pretty good by the time I was 18. I could definitely play, but I had NO CLUE that this was literally the starting point of playing...it's the advanced stuff that really separates the men from the boys. Things like dynamics, tone, control, spot on intonated bends, vibrato, volume control, proper use of effects, improvisation, smooth and tasty bar work, etc....and making EVERY note count and have its own flavor and delivery.
I think I'm FINALLY starting to really understand this here wooden thing, it only took 3 decades. 😂
I love when he plays in Major.
It always sounds so ritch an good
yes, i totally agree. Major just has a totally different feel to it that i love.

Portnoy + Petrucci = one of the most definitive and essential alchemy in the history of modern music.
How does modern music have a history if it's modern?
@@middlegroundlogic Modern music spans some 70 years and rapid evolution in that time, so there is history. Whereas the general musical traditions span hundreds or even thousands of years.

#3 Petrucci reunites with Portnoy for solo project of the century
that's a lot of hair since Petrucci's last solo album. In his next I'll bet he'll look like cousin Itt..
MP always lays down the perfect bed underneath Petrucci's solos. Just totally supports what John is playing without ever getting in the way.
Words cannot express how much I missed JP and MP playing together. They complement each other so well tonally.

It's hard not to love MP
Absolutely!

It may seem like a silly thing, but seeing Petrucci with Portnoy gave me a joy that I haven't felt for a long time. Exciting for those who hear DT since the age of 18. Great! I dream of the day of the MP's return to DT. Health for all!
Joy here too. That's a lot of compression on those drums, guessing Mike wasn't in the mixing session.
I prefer Mike Mangini now in DT. Portnoy left, dude. That means he didn't want it anymore. Plus Mangini loves being in the band and his style fits perfectly. All that said, I miss the Portnoy days, but they're gone.

Man, having Mike Portnoy and Dave LaRue as your rhythm section. They've teamed up on multiple projects. Three virtuosos. Priceless.
In the 80s John Petrucci and Kevin Moore taught music lessons at Focus II Guitar Center in Commack New York. I took lessons there but not with John, a guy named Joe but I would hear John giving lessons next door. This was before they were famous. My mother took piano lessons with Kevin while I was in my guitar lessons to pass the time. She was a doctor and never practiced, I think Kevin was very patient with her but knew she wasn’t a serious student.
That’s amazing, I love stories like this.
@@deasnutz4ever same
Damn, what a story haha. Sounds awesome tbh!
WOW amazing story!
I remember in a very old interview JP saying that when he writes a 1.5 minute solo, his main concern is that the listener won't yawn through it. And that's exactly what he does, at least in my book. He's the only shredder I know where every note seems to be meticulously and painstakingly placed exactly where it's supposed to be. Listening to his solos makes me feel like they were there all along, just waiting for him to piece them together. A unique and unmatched talent.
Well said!
He's definitely a shredder who gets to the point. One of my favorite virtuoso soloists to listen to, just because of this point. His solos never overstay their welcome and they always have something to say.
Can we all take a moment to appreciate John's cerebrum. Let me explain: He has this lead style which always sounds like 'him'. Somehow he's never written a phrase that's a total rip off of any earlier stuff. How does someone write thousands of melodies over their career, and stay true to their tone and expression, without turning into a copy-paste specialist? Very cool brain, bro.
@Todd Lewis
Sorry but A LOT on Systematic Chaos sounds like stuff from Train of Thought and Six Degrees of Inner T. and Scenes From a Memory.
But yeah he s a Melody genius aside from that. Which he proves with this Song

I agree totally, although it could be accidental that some phrases often come out as "inspired" or very familiar to other phrases whether from his or other guitarists.

I remember the 1st time that I heard about Petrucci, LaRue & Portnoy, It was in 2009 through my mother (a person who never listens HM) and she bought me an historic concert back in 2005: G3: Live in Tokyo
and the 1st song "Glasgow Kiss" was my history about these 3 members in my personal life.
Now in 2020, that song is still one of my favorites and Petrucci, Portnoy & LaRue participation in G3 is still one of the best (for me).
And this new song is in another level, better than the 1st time I heard.
Hail John, Dave & Mike!
... and I remember how that G3 DVD was "that new Petrucci DVD". Feels like yesterday, but hey - so does unwrapping Scenes from a memory on Xmas eve 1999... 🥰
@@stringfinity Oh yeah!
It was out of control
It always seems to amaze me on john petrucci guitar playing and the fact you have mike portnoy doing the drums on this absolutely amazing beautiful song very well put together!! Live on dream theater!! For the future ahead!!
2:39 with that image I will stay. Feelings :')
😍😍😍
This feels like coming home to mom. The groove is so fetching. Classic old school 90 shred. Perfect. A hint of erotomania vibe on the solo and the count of tuscany sound.
Merqury5 hit the nail on the head. It sounds great.
Coming home to mom - Nailed it!
John Petrucci is one of the greatest guitarists ever. And now….more great music.
The fans owe Petrucci a great debt. The fans continually want more material, AND John Petrucci delivers!
JP & MP together forever... The SOUND 🤟🏻
Everyone - 2020 is getting worse every month
John Petrucci - Hold my Beard
Hey, don't hold on too hard, that beard adds tone!
gold XD
make my day dude...
Here, have a like!
This singlehandedly saved 2020
JP & MP together again sounds perfect!! I missed this combination and chemistry!
Playing a game with Spotify list “epic and melodic” and this came on. Had to find and listen over and over
Of course, we all know that...The Child is moving John's fingers.
2:33 hahahahaha it's true!
Took me a minute! Good one!
Moving his fingers he is.... :D
Something is wrong with that one. His ears shouldn't be up like that.
four legends together at last: petrucci, portnoy, larue and baby yoda. \m/
Lmao!!!!
Aa doğu yücel :))
The 2 beasts are back thank you God
Oops, stopped and read this because I thought you said...2 Breast. Good point though.
You can close your eyes, and feel the energy the chemistry all the things that made dream theater something special for me for almost 24 years (I'm 30), all those things are back. It is not only beautiful but very very special and important. Thanks Mike, thanks John. I love you guys
What can I say... when the chemistry is there, will always be there...
Like muscle memory :)

It is impossible to hear and see this without a smile on the face. This is truly amazing, Portnoy belongs to Petrucci and Petrucci belongs to Portnoy, period.
Seeing John and mike play together again...feels like 2 separate half's of my heart have been put back together again.
John, you seriously deserve every single penny you earn! The love you give to your fans is the essence of who you really are! The first aspect everyone should notice is that you haven't change a bit during your long time career. Everytime I watch you playing, I see the same guy of Live In Tokyo '93, with the same spirit, the same energy and the same humbleness...Just a little bit older 🤪 Keep on rocking man!!!!
Really loving John Myung's vocals on this
