The FUJIFILM X-E3 is INCREDIBLE

  • I recently bought the Fujifilm X-E3 after trying out both the Fujifilm X-T3 and the Fujifilm X-Pro2. While I really liked the two top end models, the X-E3 offered the same image quality in a smaller package. And its priced well under $1000.
This month the rumored Fujifilm X-H1 will likely be announced as another top of the line so it should be interesting to see what it offers.

Here's how I think of the transition from Canon full frame to Fujifilm X-T20, to the X-E series cameras. With the Canon it felt like I was sitting at a big, wide executive desk interviewing my subjects. With the X-T20 I was photographing acquaintances - you know, smiling but still being a bit reserved. With the X-E's I was photographing friends, smiling and laughing with my arm around their shoulders. Really - there's a very big difference in the connection.

I picked up an X-E1 + 27mm pancake a couple months ago, and I've loved it so far! Definitely nice to have big image quality in a small package.
Also at under $200 used, the X-E1 is great for budget-minded shooters!

Nice video. I liked seeing you set it up with that ND filter and showed off their T mode with an example. You also made a good point about Fujifilm's camera range and price structure. They do tend to base it more on use-cases that relate to physical control and mechanical features such as dual card slots or more advanced viewfinders, which makes sense.

As longtime Fujifilm user I now have an XE 3 and love it. I started with an XE 1 after a friend bought an X pro 1 and have had an XE 2 and XT 1. I love that even the 18 -55 2.8 to 4 lens is so good and that the XE 3 has the same sensor, autofucus and processor as the flagship models. I love the regular firmware updates that improve functionality and sometimes add features. The XE 2 came with wifi that allowed you to send images to the smartphone, then the XT 1 came with wifi that allowed the phone to control the camera functions via an app, then Fujifilm had a firmware update that enabled this feature in the XE 2. Brilliant.

I bought the x-e3 with the 23mm f2 I think it’s a good jumping off point for starting in the Fuji systems. I use it as my personal street/everyday camera. I think it’s convinced me to invest in Fuji further down the line for photography. I hope Fuji will increase their video functions in the future too.

In my humble opinion, the go to man for any one with a serious interest in "the ART of photography." And as a bonus, this video; as I have decided to switch from Nikon to Fuji, and have just bought an x-e3 with a 23mm f2 fujinon and who better to review it. Thanks, Ted.

Very informative as always. I’m kind of in the same mindset with regard to spending more on the lenses and compromising (hardly) on the body. I bought the XT-20 instead of the XT-2. Like you it’s got the same sensor and MP and combined with the Fuji lens range you can’t tell the difference. I certainly don’t miss my Canon cameras anymore.

Love the filterholder system. It is probably the best out there. I do not own it myself but have seen how it works. It is great! Personally I use round filters with Xume magnetic adapters at 77mm and use stepup rings to compesate for the various diameters. It is not the same of course as square filters when it comes to gradiant filters, but it works like a charm!

Great review Ted. I've had Fujifilm cameras before and loved all of them. I actually own an Olympus but I’m considering going back to Fuji, so these Fujifilm reviews help a lot.
Both Olympus and Fuji offer the best ergonomics for my taste since I like to have access to dial buttons for the shutter speeds and aperture functions. Wouldn’t even think of going to another manufacturer without those options. I can set my camera much more quickly than if I had to maneuver through a menu system (or use smaller buttons).
We must beware when we talk about “Downsizing” mirrorless cameras because the downsizing must have no impact on the ergonomics. If its size forces a user to hold it an awkward manner then all the user experience is lost. And I totally agree with you Ted that one should not have to buy an extra grip to get the ergonomics back. It should all be built in from the start.
I thought that I didn’t need a weathered proof camera but I was wrong. I found myself shooting at -40 degrees and partly damage mine. So I will invest on one next time.
Correct me if I’m wrong (on a next video) but I would guess that using the electronic shutter over the mechanical one would limit the risk of accidents when shooting in very cold weather. Am I right?

I also love the x-e3. Can’t wait to see if that Eterna film emulation rumour turns out to be true, and wether it’ll show up on the x-e3. I encourage you to try one of the stabilised zoom lenses and shoot video btw. Surprisingly great stabilising for video, and amazing auto focus.

    • @jas_bataille
      @jas_bataille 6 лет назад

What are you talking about the Eterna film emulation "rumour"? Fujifilm is pushing the Eterna simulation marketing like crazy and already shown that it looked like. I don't know if it will be available in the X-E3 but what one thing is clear as water, the Eterna film simulation is *indeed* available in the XH-1. Otherwise they plainly lied.
I don't have the XH-1 in my hands right now but from memory, word by word, Fujifilm said that the Eterna is available for the XH-1 and it is not a rumour, I saw the video they shot with it and I cried just because of the colours after 30 seconds, not lying.

3 weeks ago (when the comment was posted), Eterna had not been officially announced. It has since been introduced in the X-H1, and it looks really great. I hope the Eterna film simulation will migrate to the other new generation Fujifilm cameras. I really like it.

Hi Ted, just came across this review last night. Really nice review and I fully agree with your assessments. Welcome to the Fuji X system. I'm confident you find it as fun and fulfilling as many of us do. Regarding the 16mm....you may also want to consider picking up the 14mm f/2.8 some time. It was designed by the same optical engineer that designed the 16mm f/1.4 and the 23mm f/1.4, and it is optically really superb; exemplary. One of the finest lenses I've ever used, with virtually no geometric distortion. I've found it to be quite versatile (like you, I tend to shoot wide with my Fujis) and with respect to your smaller X-E3, it's considerably more compact and lighter than the 16mm f/1.4 Regards, Stephen Scharf

Thanks for the video and speaking of video, what did you think of the 4k video quality, did you try to tether(HDMI Capture Card) it to a computer? I do a lot of Live Streaming and I would love to find out how this camera would work in that type of environment. I know that is not your focus(no pun intended) so I totally understand if that is not something you have tried. Would love to know what you thought if you did try that out.

One great and cheaper alt to the grip that I got is a high end leather half case it solves all the problems you mentioned minus the arca plate but it looks mutch better. Love the camera and lenses and image quality like you. Thinking of seling the pro2 and get an x100f as backup camera. Keep making you great videos. Plus I love my x100f and carry it everywhere. I shoot studio studio with the pro and street with the f but the way I shoot my pro would work with the xe3 and gain some cash for more lenses. tldr sounds like a good move from xpro2 to xe3

    I'm agree with you.
The X - E serie cameras are awesome for street photography, small, easy to use and has the nearest looking as film , the advantage to have the viewfinder like rangefinder camera but viewing through the lens is so helpful, good performing in low light , equally sharp as D800 , even in high ISO, beautiful design, top and bottom sides are metal, very elegant , but nothing is perfect and now I will review my negative points:
The eyepiece is a bit small
Lacking of an central split -image rangefinder spot and micro prism grid , something that X-T series has
And the Focus Piking I wish more evident is difficult to see .
    Apart of that great camera.
    Fuji XE1

So when shooting street, do you use a pancake lens? I am torn between this and the 100f, I currently have a d3300 that I use with a Nikon 35mm f1.8. I have a tamron 17-50mm 2.8 with it. I like the versatility and don't want to give up my IC lens camera, because I want to be able to do portraits and such later on of my daughter etc, but I love street photography mainly and the idea of the F with its leaf shutter and such makes me want it and use it in addition to the d3300, however, the xe3 would reduce my costs by quite a bit as I would be able to trade in the d3300. I have wanted to upgrade the d3300 for a while now thought because the lack of focus points and HSS capability.

I've been wanting a Fujifilm camera for a long time now but have been waiting for the right one with the right features. Like you, I wanted small camera, great IQ, but also a joystick, and a camera I could have with me at all times. It wasn't feasible carrying my 5DMKIV's everywhere. The fact that you get so many features in such a small package blows my mind. I will say that I have the same issues with the swipe features and something else; I like shooting using the viewfinder but the eyecup is almost non-existent and allows a lot of ambient light in. The jpegs are wonderful with the film simulations and now Capture One Pro supports the X-E3s RAW files. I love this little camera!!!!

Love hearing from real usage (not just a review period). I've entered the Fuji system (toe in the water) with a X-M1. X-E on my radar for sure. I think for me it will come down to flip/articulating screen. IE: once I know how much of a big deal it might be.

Curious about the lens hood you've got on that lens, did it come with it? Is it the 35 F/1.4 lens? Also wondering if it's worth an upgrade from the X-E2 to this one?

Great review, I’m torn between the X-Pro 2, the X-E3, and the X100F. Can I ask what filter system you’re using. I’ve never seen that filter holder before.

I'm loving the XE1 and picked it up in 2017 for only £150.
It's a lot of camera for such a bargain price.
I'll keep an eye on the XE2, and XE3 and hopefully try one soon.

I have anXE-1 and an XPRO1...I can't see getting a camera with just the joystick and not the keypad...If I ever wanted to go up..it would be the XT-20

Jon Tait I'm not sure if I should upgrade to the XE2 or not...I think it's much quicker at reading and writing to SD cards than the old XE1

First, I have been watching your channel for a long time and wanted to congratulate you for your very good work. I have some thing to say over your comments on the handgrip/plate for the camera : there is a technical reason for the tripod soquet in cameras for not being centered with the lens, simply there is no space in most big sensor compact camera to put it there. The soquet have to be strong to secure the camera that implies a certain size of the assembly for the screw. Years ago when the sensors where small it was easy to put the tripod screw aligned. But in a camera of that type to put the screw under there you would need to make the camera bigger ; that is just to put the optional plate/grip permanently integrated to the camera. In my view is better to have it as an option just for the person that wants to, when they wanted it. Sorry for my bad English. Congratulations on your work in the channel, specially on classic and not so well known photographers and their works.

Hey what tripod/ball head is that? I've got a cheap ballhead that came with one of those budget CF tripods, and I want to replace it with something a bit more sturdy (it wobbles around at the connection between the tripod and the head).

Love this review, but why do you have one of the programable wheels set to change shutter speed when there is a dial for that on top? Thanks.

    Question..
I wear glasses, I'm concerned about the evf detection with the x-e3 is this as much of an issue as it was with the x-e2? It's why I went for an xt1

Nice review of the features of the X-E3, Ted! When I got the X-Pro2, neither the X-E3 nor the XT-2 was released, and I wanted the extra resolution and new processing engine, hence I jumped on the X-Pro2. Since I print quite large (24x36" poster prints), and as I shoot 100% stills (landscapes and products), I am likewise anxiously awaiting the XT-3's alleged new sensor and engine! The X-Pro2 however, has proven to be extremely robust and reliable, even though I too, rarely take aadvantage of the hybrid EVF/OVF features. As for the upcoming hybrid XH-1, I think mostly video shooters should love that one! I also agree with your statement that Fujinon lenses are outstanding! In my 35+ years in photography, the Fujifilm X-System I find needs the least post-processing; the image sharpness, dynamic range and tonality are simply that good OOC!
