Brighton Works, the chaotic and compact railway headquarters of the LB&SCR, where engines such as the Stroudley Terriers, Billinton E2s and the Marsh Atlantics were drawn and built. We take a look at the history of the area from 1841 to the end of steam, and see what remains in the present day.
You can watch the not-so-serious footage in the not-Hornby Terrier Travels vlog: • Giant Balloons, Seagul...
Thanks to Harry for making it possible.
Also thanks to TheBallastMan for the documentary footage: / @theballastman
The brief clips of you and Harry goofing around truly made this for me.
There's far more where that came from in the next #TerrierTravels vlog!
@@Terrier55Stepney the adventure begins trailer us trainz remake 22
Absolutely love the Henry acoustic theme at 5:42, and the 'Stepney Bell Hill' theme in 12:40. Absolute moods
So many of my favourite locos were build in Brighton: the E2s, B1s, the Atlantics, the I3s, the Terriers, D1s, E4s and even Bulleid's Leader to a certain extent.
I love the Super Bell Hill/ Stepney's theme mashup too; I just wanna see more of that.
I’m SOOOO glad that I found this gem of a channel!
I'm SOOOO glad that you did too, thank you!
Great to see. I used to sit on the wall overlooking this collecting engine numbers in the early 1950’s and watch the special workers train to Lancing carriage works and terroir class engines depart to Horsham via shoreham, Bramber, Steyning, Henfield and Southwater as well as both the Southern 3 rail electric trains towards Portsmouth and the main line to London.
Many great memories.
I really like how this episode started with a Terrier tank engine like Stepney coming out of the workshop
Thanks for this fun little history video. I love a great many LBSC locos, including the A1s, E1s, D1s, Brighton Atlantics, E2s, Gladstone, E4s and although not LBSC, I do have a soft spot for Bulleid’s Leader.
The Terriers are my favourite engines built there, especially Stepney and Boxhill.
I’m going on holiday to Brighton for the week and one thing I definitely want to do is to see the station
I'm saying the truth (or maybe) you guys, everyone in Thomas Fandom you guys really teach me the true meaning of Thomas of it's History is a great experience and i love this Fandom. (and even if it's starting to get toxic i don't want to get into something very mean let's all leave it behind and always be happy.) 😊
Great Video! I really enjoyed the then and now comparison in this quirky little video (the use of jokes as well as history worked perfectly).
There are some really interesting locomotives that were built at Brighton, including everyone’s favourite Terriers. I really also like the E4s like Birch Grove, and the K Class 2-6-0s (which were probably one of the Southern’s best mixed traffic engines), and of course the BR Standard 4 Tanks.
Keep up the amazing work!
I enjoyed this quick documentary. Looking forward to more.
This is gonna be awesome! Can't wait!
MORE TALKY VIDEOS PLEASE!!!!
Great video Max!
This was awesome! Great video! Loved it a lot!
Very interesting history, presented in an enjoyable way.
I'd certainly love to see certain videos about the Locomotive Works of the LNER, like Doncaster or Darlington.
Can’t wait!!! 😊
Very nice video matie and a good historical look into the worlds famous works
When Stepney gets sued he knows what court to go to.
Sued for what?
I don't know, it was meant to be a pun.
@@thomasandharry5199 Yes I am aware.
@@TheBrickGuy7939 sued by britt allcroft for “copying” TTTE Stepney

Dayum! The Remembrance is a BIG tank engine!
At that yard at 8:46 is PACKED!
I've Used To Go To Brighton In East Sussex In England When I Was A Kid. Thanks Mate. PS I've Been To Lot Of Attractions In The City Such As The British Airways I360 Post Office Tower And Of Course The Royal Pavilion Museum Which Is Bigger Than Buckingham Palace In London In England As Well Too. I've Also Excited For Disney's Winnie The Pooh At Brighton's Theatre Royal This Year. Wish Me Luck. X
This Is Amazing Video!!! Keep Up The Great Work!!!
Very nice vid excellent archive shots of btn and the works. As an aside , when I started at bton in the eighties I was told that a driver, can’t remember who now, went inside the works when it had closed having a nose round , looking for anything “useful “
He fancied one of the large wall clocks so had it away and went home. Turned out there was a master clock and what he’d nicked was a slave clock so by unplugging it and breaking the bus circuit every single clock in the works and on the station stopped. And it took quite a while for the reason to be discovered. And the clock was no effiing use to him either.
Where I live, a lot of railway lines have been ripped up but at the same time, many of the bridges and buildings from the original railways. I never would have guessed that a place as famous as Brighton Works would succumb to modern development for roadways.
its a shame and same at doncaster works theres nothing left but if u know were to look bits are still there its crazy really great video :)
Very informative, thank you
Great video man, loved to hear about the history
All the engines from Brighton are my favorite.
About 930 when you’re looking over the engineering dept( or what’s left of it) and Montpelier sidings. ( Montpelier junction is where the east coast lines swing away to London road viaduct ) some of that area and the sidings were rebuilt in the early nineties. The track became flatbottom and all the ash ballast disappeared and we had to stumble over mainline ballast. I got half a dozen bricks with the hardest mortar known to man still stuck on them. They d been part of a small remnant of blue brick paved walkway, probably part of the running shed ash pit area. Their paving a bit of my garden now. , a bit of the steam shed lives on
Really amazing. I haven't really been to where Brighton Works was. I haven't really been to Brighton.
The LBSCR is beautiful
I accidently pulled the coupling off jennylind last weekend :(
Amazing Video!
I love watching these!
I have always loved Brighton
Oh hi Mr 55. I love your videos
Idk why i Liked tell about Engine and another by Max!! Its like tell history!! (I feel like that)

an Great job on this video.
Glad to know about the railway lines in Brighton cause I was born in Brighton
I really enjoyed this video. :)
Very good thank you for the video

Along with the K and E2 class locomotives, the LBSCR L class is one of my favourite engines built at Brighton works
And yes, I am aware of the flaws with the E2 class locomotives
My favorite Brighton engines, by the way, are Stepney, Boxhill, Fenchurch, Martello, Merton, and Thomas.
A good mix of tank engines!
@@Terrier55Stepney By the way, did you know that the Southern Railway loaned some Terriers to the GWR?
Edit: Can't forget Birch Grove!
my favorite was about Stepney so thank you
I always wanted to build a LBSC Jenny Lind in 3.5" gauge from the LBSC (Curly Lawrence) kit. I love for Single locomotives with Inside cylinders.
Nice video! You deserve a comment
And a like
The look in thomas his eyes in the thumbnail looks like he has seen horrible stuff and is now traumitised
Or he’s just giving you the death stare
He see the reboot!
He's seen the man
It took a very long time to remove part of the chalk down which inhibited the expansion of the Works. the before and after photos were in a 1960s Railway Magazine and also in the 1935 Railway Mag.
Your perfectly timed “now now”
I recently learned that boxhill was turned into a 2-4-0 for a bit...
What-

Can you teach us something about the LNER next time?
I loved your knowledge Max and #StepneyCon
School of Stepney. Thank you!
How very interesting!
Nice!
Looking back at this video it's still funny to think that I live where some of the best engines were built.
Plz do more and can you do the E2s there my favorite
I really want a hornby e2
Beautiful
My OC is based on Brighton's E1X No.89
the only E1 that was given Modified parts and paved way for the E2"s
All the original books were written in the rectory my 3x great grandfather built when he was Vicar of Emneth himself.
i had to ditch the premier because flying scotsman popped down to south norwood, which happened to be the first time a steam engine came up this way since 2013!
its so sad that one of the brief histories of once stood of an old era station suddenly banished
Noooooooooooooooooo! I missed the stream
My favorite loco that was built in Brighton has to be the Bulleid Q1, Neville’s class.
Luckily, 33010 was one of the Q1s built in Brighton.
Sad very little of Brighton works remains today though its nice to see some refrences and call backs to what was once there to a nearly forgotten era. Not a fan of the modern office and parking building currently standing though overtime I think it will change again after a couple of decades!
My favourite steam locomotive that was built in Brighton is Stepney built on 21st December 1875
I bet your looking forward to the terrier anniversary event at barrow hill next year
6:32 hey looks familiar in the TV series
I love the Video and I got my own Terrier model called Brighton and its a Hornby make and have you got a Hornby Modal Railway?
my favourite engines are the E2 TANK ENGINES
Will you be at the terrier weekend at the Isle of Wight? Im going there on the Saturday.
I'll be there on Friday I'm afraid.
@@Terrier55Stepney Well, I’m coming there on the Friday and staying for the Saturday. I won’t be at the railway on the Friday though.
One thing I’ve learned about thomas in the rws Thomas and boxhill are old friends!
Amazing video as usual!
Also, gotta ask, will you be going to the Awdry Extravaganza?
Thanks! I will be there, yes. Very much looking forward to it.
@@Terrier55Stepney I can't wait for that then, lol Also, probably expected, but my favorote Brighton Works engine is the E2, because of my childhood, that is the design I think of when I think Tank Engine
@@Matthew-oi6kz Did you happen to watch a train show with an E2 in it? Or read a book or a few with an E2 as a character?
Cant wait am 5th
What's that comment at the opening of the video? It appears to have been made by me but I dont have any memory of making it, nor can find any evidence of making it.
Well I found it. It was a reply to someone else's comment about the shocked face on thomas in one of your thumbnails. I dont understand why it had to be plastered at the opening of your video but that was weird.
8:51 look at the bottom there, it’s that one spinner!
Wait wAit waiT that E4 over there 8:03 bottom right corner ITS BIRCH GROVE!
R-I-P the parts of the LBSCR R-I-P
interesting history
Be assured the Ghost Train did light up at night for the first year or two after installation.
R.I.P Brighton
The Brighton Belle used to be at Brighton Works before it was demolished.
My favorite is the obscure e2 tank engine
You have no idea that the e2 was popular
@@ejisbored7438 Only in certain circles. I had to learn about E2s from a toy one.
Can you do a history video on fenchurch
I plan to next year.
I miss the days of steam

I own Morden/Brighton Works engine but in it's SR green (dapol D70 A1/A1X SR 2635 Morden)
Wow 😮 the birth place of the E2 too bad the actual locomotive works are gone
The last br loco built at Brighton workshops was 80154
Thomas is blue
keep doing these talk videos plz
2:42 Well, well, well. If it isn't Martello.
3:07 also known as the most hated class
So if Stepney and thomas came from Brighton does that mean Cousins?
Thomas theory
Thomas and Stepney should’ve been close relatives
3:03 me lol
Una gran historia que desearía escuchar bien si tan solo entenfiera inglés 😿😿😅😅😐😐🙃🙃😓😓
wow
I like the street names referencing the rail works; the Isetta bubble car was built in Brighton and were transported by rail & this is referenced in one of the street names as well. Shame about the graffiti...
I think he likes terriers
