- How to treat thrips! I'll show progress of about 3 months in dealing with a severe thrips infestation plus a milder one in my own home. What i learned most? You have to be patient for predatory bugs to work! I got mine from www.entocare.nl - They're currently not shipping because of the heat, but they'll be back online when it's safe again.

I use predatory mites too. When I had a really bad thrips infestation I also used some predatory thrips, but also some mites that live in the soil to kill off any young thrips. Thrips lay their eggs in the soil.
Now I use the little baggies to prevent thrips and Spider mites. I haven't seen a thrips or Spider mite again now for over a year.
I used pesticides before. It was a lot of work to spray over 100 plants. The mites are somewhat expensive, but in my opinion worth it.
Soms people think it's icky, but I rather have bugs that eat bad bugs than bugs that eat my lovely plants.

Exactly! Good bugs became my friends 😅 And some thrips have their eggs (I think pupae too) in the soil but other kinds of thrips lay their eggs in the leaves. It depends on which one you have 🤓💕

This isn't helpful at all, they used pesticides in combination with predatory mites. A HUGE no no. Even organic pesticides like Spinosad containing sprays will harm predatory mites

The ones not in the satchels look like Rove beetles "Staphylinidae" and they are ferocious both adults and juveniles. They also can get up to 3/4" long.
Hey! They are Franklinothrips vespiformis, predatory thrips. They do look pretty similar, but from the sound of it much bigger!

I have a tiny question about the mite treatment - Is it possibe to see these mites on the plants and how can I identify them?
I´ve managed to caught an early thrips infestation with a few buggers eating on my monstera. I´ve seen one adult but mainly the larvae, so I´ve cleaned the leaves thoroughly before treatment with a. cucumeris mites. Today I did a check-in on my monstera, found some thrips and removed them. I also saw some kind of smaller thing searching around the leaves in my magnifying glass, but It´s not easy to see exactly what it is. Can I identify the mites by maybe how they move and by their color? Thank you!
Hey thank you! It helps to have an idea of what they look like, but I can't tell you exactly. There are often different kinds of mites in the baggies, including some to feed the ones you bought in case there is not enough thrips to eat. Generally mites are small and round and have 8 legs instead of 6 if I remember correctly.. Check entocare.nl for close-up photos and video of them!

It's interesting that you have the swirskii instead of the cucumeris with being in such a cold climate. Swirskii can't breed below 20 celcius. They're able to eat instar 2 and instar 1 however whilst cucumeric only instar 1. I think it was a bad idea to add the predators so quickly after applying the leaf treatment. Best to wait two days but nevermind. You had such a large quantity of predators :)
I go by the advice of the company, they're the experts in my climate as they're based in the Netherlands too. And regarding the wait, that was not possible in this case as it is not my own house. But yeah I agree that that would have been even better
Hee Roos ! Merci alweer voor n erg fijne en nuttige vid. Those cats are so cute ! Ik heb ook n vraagje als dat mag, since you're the alocasia queen... About a month ago I bought this gorgeous Azlani from my nursery (dollars dollars :/ but worth it) and it was doing great, two leaves in one month ! Then... drama started... I saw little webs but couldn't identify any spider mites, so I sprayed the plant with filtered water, webs kept coming back and even with my jewelers magnifyer I couldn't discern spider mites but I decided to treat it anyway, with Fazilospray, which has done wonders here before (I also use neem oil solution, but for the rarer plants ...) The orning after the treatment I noticed the alocasia was also in need of water (eventhough I measured it two days ago) this together made all the leaves droop and the day after all of them except the two new ones started to yellow and brown. Day after the 2 new ones also started to yellow a little bit. So I decided to cut all the drying leaves except for the new. I now have a very sad plant isolated in my bedroom. :( But you always say Alocasia are strong, they will come back. So long story, but now a question, would it be helpful to put a transparent plastic bag over the plant cause I remember hearing somewhere it helps jewel alocasia recover and put out new growth. Curious bout your experience. ( I also have a polly and she seems to do ok... so I'm not new to alocasia, even sucessfully grew a Sarian, but then gifted it cause it was getting to wide - Is it also your experience that some varieties are trickier ? ) Very long message sorry. Hey Riff Raff! Thank you 💕 Yes the plastic bag would help, and yes some are more tricky than others. I find that the jewels are more tricky than the bigger ones, and the big ones need more water. If they're small or struggling, a closed high humidity environment will help 🙌🏻 good luck!

ik struggle al maanden en ik vind het heel overwhelming :( veel planten weg gedaan of naar buiten en mijten, aaltjes, sprays etc geprobeerd. IK HAAT ZE
Wat vervelend! ik begrijp je helemaal, het is zo niet leuk! maakt de liefde voor planten ook anders. succes en hou vol!
Spray-Total Wipedown-Spray. Spraying alone doesn't help because the eggs are stuck quite well onto the plant. I use a microfibre cloth but it's never enough because it's impossible to completely wipe off every nook and cranny of the plant. I get less frequent infestations compared to just spraying.
I don't want to do either of these because it would remove or harm the good bugs!
Get a wide brimmed paintbrush. Get in the habit of brushing leaves when you inspect your plants, then immediately after spray the floor area around the plant and the soil top with a must of 1 part iso propyl alcohol and 3 parts water, this kills the ones that you fkucked onto the ground. I disagree with the video poster, it ABSOLUTELY IS about having no bugs, 1 hug becomes 100 in about 4 days.. then exponential from there. :)
Worth mentioning also that your r.h meter in the tent says its 88% rh in there.. I hope it's also about 37c in there too?? This is where you'd be in good vpd range at that humidity. 88% at 21c for example puts your plants in prime vpd range for pathogen growth.. not joking and respectfully intended.
It's never been that warm in my tent, I'm in the Netherlands and didn't use a heating element. Also this video is very old, I no longer use a tent.
So I've used mites for the past 6 weeks, I got 60,000 predatory mites, and I now have predatory beetles that are due to turn up while the mites are still alive to deal with any of the remaining pupae in the soil and adults that are flitting around, I will then be bringing in my colony of ladybirds that I've been cultivating in our outdoor greenhouse and feeding them aphids from outdoor plants lol
Honestly it's been really affective in my opinion
I used this same method a couples years ago and haven't had any until now

Actually I don't think that's the solution for thrips. Of course it's important to have good airflow and you can use a humidifier but that's not thrips treatment.

@@plantwithroos its actually good advice, keep the vpd in check for plants, but air movement slows mating ;) cannabis grower for overx30 years here, but also grow vegetated monsterras, edible plants and flowers.
What happens if you use these bugs, but it turns out the plant doesn’t actually have thrips?
From what I know - and I'm no expert - they will go look for food nearby or eat from the provided food mites until they die
I ordered them 2 days ago and put them on my plants now i hope it works because im so scared my plants will die like last timee

I'm battling thrips. I'm using orius and also the sachets. Have you been successful in eradicating thrips? How often did you release predathrips?

Hey! Sorry to hear you have them, they suck! I have had success in my own home where I renew the good bugs army every 4 weeks. It took several months for me but it worked. They do pop up in new places sometimes cos they can also come in from outside in many ways, just like other pests. Don't give up! 💌♥️
Get nemotodes for the soil, 99% iso alcohol at a 1 to 5 mixture will kill bugs and eggs on contact and rarely damages Leafy plants ( flowers burn ), if you can spray them with 1 part iso and 3 part water and brush them with a wide brimmed paintbrush in the shower, then rinse off, remember the muxture kills on contact so you can dilute and wash it off immediately if your concerned. She's seeing larvae 8n the video 2 weeks later cause the predators are dying off and the larvae in soil is hatching

Is it recommended to wash and treat the plants before releasing the predatory insects? That leaves them with little to eat, especially the insects that are there to eat the adult thrips and cause them to compete with each other. I wonder how long the predatory insects can live without much to eat while they wait for the population to build up again. Insects can also turn on each other when food source is low.
Wouldn’t it be better to release them, let them do their thing and then do a round of wash and treat and then do another round of predator insects?
I bought lacewings for thrips once, but felt bad because I noticed most died due to not having much to eat since I caught the trips early on and didn’t have many plants with the thrips.
If anyone can advise, I’d really appreciate it so I am more prepared for the next time I have an outbreak!
I don't know what's recommended, as always I'm only sharing my experience and I'm no expert. Since only predatory mites doesn't always work on big infestations we thought this would be the best course of action, since the plants could also use a dusting. The bags some of these bugs come in provide food for the good bugs so that's not an issue. I don't know how it works with the predatrip but in this case there were plenty of adults left for them to eat.

Thats perfect that they come with food in the bags and a great back up solution so they can do their thing as more emerge. I’ll go that route next time. Your videos are helpful and entertaining so thank you for all you do.
I wouldn't spray them first. The predatory mites seem to work best and breed best when there's a good amount of prey although there are feeder mites included when you buy. If you are going to spray first then wait at least two days for an insecticidal soap or two weeks after a pesticidal spray.

I mention this in the video (or maybe I cut that part out? Now I'm confused). The spray only works on impact, once it is dry it doesn't kill anything anymore.

Now that I've finished the whole video, THANK YOU so much for this!! I often get so discouraged when I see a new pest infestation and it's so overwhelming. I've been using the Koppert Swirski packs for a couple months, (Thank you for your video on beneficial mites!) I've noticed that my Fungus Gnat issue has lessened a LOT. Even though I know they aren't supposed to work on fungus gnats. Beneficials are a whole new world! I LOVVVVE them so much, and there isn't very much information on them. I so appreciate your video's, I've learned SO much.

I’m not sure but I heard if you use leaf shine that thrips & mealy bugs don’t like leaf shine but I’m not sure if it helps as a preventative or getting rid of them or if it makes a difference
In November we took in two kittens that were dumped off at our work & they’re sisters and always together & if separated our gizmo cries and her sister abbey comes running 💕
Yes leaf shine can work against pests but it is super chemical and would also kill good bugs unfortunately 😩
