This has always struck me as a sad song, despite the relaxed tropical island vibe. The man's been drinking for days because he had problems with a woman, and he's gradually coming around to realize that it's his own fault. It's a lovely contrast between content and tone.

As an old guy who grew up on this song, when I hear it these days I think about the fact that the younger generations probably don’t know what “stepped on a pop top” means! 🤣 up through the mid eighties (I’m guessing there) soda cans (and beer cans) were opened by pulling & removing a tab. The kind that flip over & stay on the can are a new style! So, it was very common for people to pull off the “pop top” and throw it down. They were everywhere you looked. I think that’s why they changed the design, to cut down on litter. Anyway, these “pop tops” had sharp edges, hence the line “stepped on a pop top, cut my heel, had to cruise on back home” This is one of the biggest, most well known drinking songs of the 70s-80s era. But when you sing along, you have to know where to add the “salt! salt! salt!”

This is exactly right. I’m 51 and had a friend about 7 years younger ask me what a pop top was, so I’d guess the cut off was the mid 80s. I was born in 72 and distinctly remember not being able to go barefoot on beaches and around pools because of discarded pop tops.

You can't discount all of his later records. Some times you might not like what you hear the first few times you listen. But they grow on you rapidly. Then you put it away for a few months pull it out and hear them with a whole new perspective finding things you completely missed .And find he hasn't lost a step in over 40 years. Always sharing wisdom with a new verse

    • @Guitaural.
      @Guitaural. 2 года назад

@@roryschweinfurter4111 True - definitely wouldn't discount them. But, most musicians tend to concentrate more on firing up the touring machine later in their career, rather than new music. Especially now that the music business is in such bad shape - touring is where the income is now. Plus Jimmy also has a lot of business interests these days, which I'm sure takes a lot of his time. None of that takes away from the music he's made tho.

He's always made his focus on the touring and hasn't had a hit record in over 40 years except for 5 o'clock somewhere with Alan Jackson. And he's a non-stop money making machine. But he's always stayed true to himself. Like in
      Why we ever go home
"Just writing little stories of what made it a ball". And that's why he has fans like PARROTTHEADS. who follow him like he's the Pied Piper. He leads we follow. And we all want to live his life. Sailing. Flying acting singing
He paid his dues. Now he's reaping the rewards

Back in the 90's it was a ritual for us to go to the Buffett concert every summer. It was a huge beach party in the parking lot that moves into the arena for the show. Everyone singing the words to all his songs. People dressed as sharks, lobsters, and of course parrots.......Buffett fans are called Parrotheads.......then after the concert is over the party moves back to the parking lot. Such a great time and memories.

My folks liked this song alot back in 1978. Gave them an excuse to mix up some margaritas I suppose. That sound is likely a xylophone played to sound like a steel pan drum. "Stepped on a pop top" -- back in the 70's, beer cans came with tabs you pulled off completely and then discarded. So if you were hanging out bare foot and drinking beer you had to take care that you didn't accidentally cut your feet on the discarded tabs. One of my summer roommates in college back in the late 80's worked as a roadie for Jimmy Buffett. She brought us a case of Corona beer courtesy of the tour when she got back in time for classes to start. She was the coolest.

Jimmy used steel drums sometimes in his recordings. I used to listen to this great summer tune on a $5 transistor radio I got for my 10th birthday. No MTV, no Internet, no cell phones. Nothing. Only hoping you get a good reception on your radio. This song became its own legend and made Jimmy a gazillion dollars. He even has his own club called "The Margaritaviile" down in Florida.

I grew up in Florida (by Madeira Beach) and when he lived here in the 70's/80s he used to pop into local bars and play - he is such a great guy!

Buffett fans are called Parrot Heads. He did a concert in Tallahassee after Florida had been hit by a couple of hurricanes. The concert was titled after one of his songs "Trying to Reason With Hurricane Season". All of the Houses on Fraternity Row were themed to songs from Buffet.
His fans range in age from 10 to 110 and a lot of us are crazy (in a good way)

Asia and BJ, you were pretty close when you were talking about the Caribbean. Actually it was closer to home, Key West, Florida. He spent many years down there( maybe he still does go down there), and that is where the original Margaritaviill restaurant was. He and his Coral Reefer Band used to play there frequently, and if you happened to be there at that time, you got a great show. That’s just one of many reasons I love the Florida Keys. I know your followers are going to recommend many of his great songs( he is a terrific songwriter and musician), so I’m going to add 2 of my favorites and hope you can check them out. “The Captain and the Kid”, and “ A pirate Looks at 40. They both will pull at your heartstrings. Great job as usual!! See you next video.😎👍👍👍

I was in high school when this song was released. I remember my father asking me, "What does "I blew out my flip flop, stepped on a pop top" mean?" I told him it meant the guy's sandal broke and he stepped on the pull tab from a beer and cut his foot. My Dad said, "No. I know this is about drugs." I replied, "No Dad. This is about alcohol." I'll never forget that conversation. :-)

Are you kidding? You must be young, because I agree that millennials don't know/care about/listen to it at all, which is why it may seem underrated to you. But I'm 49, and folks about 10 years younger than I, and up to DEAD think of this song as their party ANTHEM. I've know people who have had this for their first dance at their WEDDINGS! Then they honeymooned on an island somewhere to live it out. Years later, after having kids, and actually finding a sitter so we could all meet at the bar for a night out, this song would come on, they'd cozy up to each other tight like they were all in love again, do a ton of tequila shots with/on each other, and then by the end of the song, have a sad, hollow look of lost youth. I knew 3 couples like this! Sad! Trust me, this song is actually OVERrated in my generation, and the ones before and after mine. If you really listen to, or read the lyrics, it really is kind of a downer song; the guy and his pathetic life are not too admirable. Just sayin'.
Edit: Okay, I can see by your avatar that you're not a millennial, so sorry about that. But I still stand by several generations overappreciating this song as, 'brilliant,' and I just don't understand it. Tomato, TomAHto, I guess. ✌

I’ve been to like 5 of concerts. Check out of his live videos and you’ll see the massive amount of people and how people are just having so much fun. Grass skirts, coconut bras etc

He wrote a lot of great songs, but this is Buffett's career-defining song. He said not too long ago that people never seem to realize that it's about a guy who's life is kind of a mess. There's so much humor and charm to the song that you almost can't see that, though, kind of like a favorite uncle who's so much fun and so sweet that you don't realize until you're older and look back that he was a drunk who's personal life was something of a disaster.
