He decided to open some Margaritaville locations and eventually his song Cheeseburger in Paradise also spawned a chain of restaurants. These and other business decisions led Jimmy to become a billionaire. He was considered a rock guy but his crossover favorability with country fans was huge too. In fact there is a song called 5 o'clock somewhere which he did as a duet with country star Alan Jackson. Appreciate the video this morning. Before you call me a stupid jerk-weed (I probably am), remember I had never heard of Jimmy Buffett. Years later, I was at a club in New Orleans called Tipitina's Mardi Gras eve listening to The Meters when Jimmy Buffett takes the stage and plays a short set. There's a break and some of us went outside to powder our noses. I turned around and who did I se, but Jimmy Buffett. I said I had all of his albums back through "Rancho Delux." He said, "So you're the one." (who bought the album)

On one of his live albums he answers the question about the location of Margaritaville, "... it's either in your mind or at the bottom of a Cuervo bottle". That about sums it up. Besides the fun party songs, he's written/performed some truly beautiful songs. He has a huge catalog worth exploring.

I knew Jim back in the late 1970's We used to hang at a small bar in Key West. He bought that bar, renamed it Margaritaville . That where it started. Behind the bar was a clock . The only numbers on it Where 5s. That's where the we get it's 5 o'clock somewhere comes from. Another great song.
The line about "stepped on a pop top" is one you're too young to understand. Back in the 70s, when this song was written, soda and beer cans had a different type of opening. You'd pull on a ring, and the little piece of metal would come completely off. It was very thin, and the edges were quite sharp. They would also curve a bit as you pulled them off. And then people would throw them on the ground, where the curved and sharp edges would stick up. I think all of us who were alive then had the experience of getting a cut either on a foot or a finger from one of those things.
The “Margaritaville” in the song, I’ve always believed, was not a physical place but rather a frame of mind, a laid back, alcohol induced party lifestyle sort of thing that you could live wherever you happen to be. And pop tops were the original removable tabs used to open aluminum drink cans. Prior to them you had to physically puncture the can with a can opener, then came the pop top which, when you pulled it off, would curl up and was definitely capable of cutting you if you stepped on it. I used to live in Key West ,JB had a bar called the Green Parrot where he would play every third Saturday night when he was in town. When playing, it was just him, his guitar, and a pitcher of beer on a bar stool. Best Buffet ever!!! When in town he would stay on his sailboat at the Sunbeam marina. We lived across the street. This was the best time of my life, living in Paradise! RIP JB we will miss you!

Everyone has answered the which came 1st on Margaritaville, but I want to also share that his fan base was huge and very loyal! Not only did the have the nickname of Parrot Heads, but they followed him around from concert to concert, in RVs and even buses. They set up tailgating parties that put football tailgates to shame. I went to a concert complements of a local radio station and it was eye opening. I always liked Jimmy Buffet 's music, but had no clue any of this was going on. The concert was one of the best I have been to. Jimmy performed for about 3 hours, non stop. His band took a lengthy pause in middle, but Jimmy kept talking to the audience and showing videos of his Parrot Head fans on a big screen. He was barefoot, wearing cargo shorts and a tropical print shirt. It was great!

Jimmy passed away recently at 75. Great singer song writer and I am lucky to see him in concert a few times. What a vibe. And like people are saying he became a billionaire from concerts, merchandise, and restaurants. I think back in the 90's I read he was bringing in about 50 million a year and I don't think he ever had a #1 hit. But he made a lot of good memories for many people.

Jimmy got tired of seeing T-shirts with his name misspelled so he took over his own Marketing… There are Margaritaville hotels, restaurants, retirement communities, casinos etc…Jimmy was a genius!!!

Ah, yeah, there are lots of Margaritavilles around, all stemming from this song! Also, Cheeseburger in Paradise. I highly recommend so many of his songs - A Pirate Looks at Forty, Changes in Lattitudes, Come Monday, Volcano, He Went to Paris, Pencil Thin Mustache, Son of a Son of a Sailor, Grapefruit-Juicy Fruit, It's 5 O'Clock Somewhere... there are just so many lovely songs. He created a sort of laid-back, relax and drink vacation music vibe that is his own brand. I might stay away from 'Why Don't We Get Drunk and Screw' - probably outside of your RUclips rules :)
Ive never gotten in to his taped live performances much because he's so responsive to the audience, and I like to sing along. But I'll bet they were HUGE fun to be at!!!
Jimmy started out trying to make it in country... then he visited Key West. He fell in love with the lifestyle and stayed there. While he had more success on the rock charts, he inspired a generation of country artists, from Kenny Chesney to Alan Jackson (who shared billing with him on their #1 country hit, "It's 5 O'clock Somewhere". So many great songs from his catalog. A couple that get overlooked include "A Cowboy In The Jungle" and "Son of a Son of a Sailor" :D

So sad to hear of Jimmy Buffett's recent passing. He was a great singer-songwriter, musician & actor. His songs had such a laid back island feel to them. I had a couple of his albums. He had a lot of hits especially in the 70's-80's such as “Son Of Son Of A Sailor”, "Come Monday", “Fins”, “He Went To Paris”, “Cheeseburger In Paradise”, “A Pirate Looks At Forty”, “One Particular Harbor”, “Changes In Latitudes, Changes In Attitudes”, “Volcano”, “Boat Drinks”, “Pencil Thin Mustache” etc.
Jimmy Buffett’s clever laid-back songs touched a wish for simplicity that grew in many of us boomers as life got more complicated. Buffett seems to have circled the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean like an aquisitive butterfly, picking up a little reggae here, some calypso there. Then he breathed some country chords on it all, so that the music gently filled his sails for leisurely cruise into our hearts. In my own case, when he sang about the Keys and the Caribbean, personal experience produced memories of islands in the Andaman Sea, the Gulf of Siam, and a couple of hundred miles of the Mun River, the Mekong, and the Tonle Sap. Also, I’d guess that a very shrewd Jimmy Buffet didn’t get drunk nearly as often as he sang about drinking.

Britt, the original Margaritaville is in Key West, Florida. How the song came about was Jimmy was a struggling guitarist and songwriter in Key West and asked the owner of the bar what he should do to get a hit song. The owner, a legendary barkeep, told him, "Why don't you write about that margarita in front of you." He did and the rest is history. Jimmy was one of the biggest booster of the laid-back Key West lifestyle. It made Key West one of the most popular tourist locations in the U.S. Every concert he gave had thousands of "Parrotheads" in attendance. He was catagorized as a country artist but many considered him Caribbean country artist.
There is a Margaritaville at the City Walk at Univeral Studios right before you get into Islands of Adventure. Just across the border from me in SC they have a Margaritaville retirement community for the seniors who still want to party.

The song is about a guy just chilling on an island enjoying the Caribbean lifestyle and Margaritas. This song spawned the Margaritaville chain.

When this came out your return flight was sometimes referred to as a flip flop and stepping on a pop top could also mean getting too drunk to function. So that line could mean getting drunk and missing your flight home and, hence, staying in Mexico all season.

The song came out in 1977. At that time, there was no such thing as Margaritaville. It was just a clever, tongue in cheek way of saying he was drunk on margaritas. The song is basically his view of what Margaritaville would be like. In the song, apparently, his woman left him of his own doings, and some people were saying it was her fault. The first chorus ends with him saying it’s nobody’s fault. Then, he goes to “It could be my fault”. Then it ends with him taking full blame with “It’s my own damn fault”. Jimmy had even had several people ask him after the song came out where Margaritaville was, and he said, “It’s anywhere you want it to be. It’s in your mind”. The Margaritaville clubs/restaurants came many years later. I’ve had their food there. It is really good. Went to the one in Panama City.
I saw him in California right after he wreaked his foot and he was in a cast. We loved the concert sitting on a grassy hill. Such a great time. Every one loved him. Sun and Jimmy in 1977.

I saw Jimmy in concert 8 times, the first time with my parents and my boyfriend (who later became my husband), they introduced me to him when I was a young teenager. I lost my husband three years ago but was fortunate enough to have been able to take my kids with their significant others to his concert last summer…they grew up listening to him as well as hearing us talk about him and his concerts. What great memories we made around our tailgates and summer nights listening to Jimmy, he will be missed but always loved.

Those pop tops could become a pain in the posterior when the tab broke before even starting to open the can. You had to go looking for a can opener.

This song was so iconic, it actually created a whole new marketing concept of Margaritaville type party destinations and still going strong today. It was absolutely a huge hit and made Jimmy very famous.

I highly recommend so many of his songs - A Pirate Looks at Forty, Changes in Lattitudes, Come Monday, Volcano, He Went to Paris, Pencil Thin Mustache, Son of a Son of a Sailor, Grapefruit-Juicy Fruit, It's 5 O'Clock Somewhere... there are just so many lovely songs. He created a sort of laid-back, relax and drink vacation music vibe that is his own brand. I might stay away from 'Why Don't We Get Drunk and Screw' - probably outside of your RUclips rules :)

Jimmy started out trying to make it in country... then he visited Key West. He fell in love with the lifestyle and stayed there. While he had more success on the rock charts, he inspired a generation of country artists, from Kenny Chesney to Alan Jackson (who shared billing with him on their #1 country hit, "It's 5 O'clock Somewhere". So many great songs from his catalog. A couple that get overlooked include "A Cowboy In The Jungle" and "Son of a Son of a Sailor" :D

So sad to hear of Jimmy Buffett's recent passing. He was a great singer-songwriter, musician & actor. His songs had such a laid back island feel to them. I had a couple of his albums. He had a lot of hits especially in the 70's-80's such as “Son Of Son Of A Sailor”, "Come Monday", “Fins”, “He Went To Paris”, “Cheeseburger In Paradise”, “A Pirate Looks At Forty”, “One Particular Harbor”, “Changes In Latitudes, Changes In Attitudes”, “Volcano”, “Boat Drinks”, “Pencil Thin Mustache” etc.
Jimmy Buffett’s clever laid-back songs touched a wish for simplicity that grew in many of us boomers as life got more complicated. Buffett seems to have circled the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean like an aquisitive butterfly, picking up a little reggae here, some calypso there. Then he breathed some country chords on it all, so that the music gently filled his sails for leisurely cruise into our hearts.
In my own case, when he sang about the Keys and the Caribbean, personal experience produced memories of islands in the Andaman Sea, the Gulf of Siam, and a couple of hundred miles of the Mun River, the Mekong, and the Tonle Sap.
Also, I’d guess that a very shrewd Jimmy Buffet didn’t get drunk nearly as often as he sang about drinking.

Britt, the original Margaritaville is in Key West, Florida. How the song came about was Jimmy was a struggling guitarist and songwriter in Key West and asked the owner of the bar what he should do to get a hit song. The owner, a legendary barkeep, told him, "Why don't you write about that margarita in front of you." He did and the rest is history. Jimmy was one of the biggest booster of the laid-back Key West lifestyle. It made Key West one of the most popular tourist locations in the U.S. Every concert he gave had thousands of "Parrotheads" in attendance. He was
catagorized as a country artist but many considered him Caribbean country artist.
There is a Margaritaville at the City Walk at Univeral Studios right before you get into Islands of Adventure. Just across the border from me in SC they have a Margaritaville retirement community for the seniors who still want to party.

The song is about a guy just chilling on an island enjoying the Caribbean lifestyle and Margaritas. This song spawned the Margaritaville chain.

When this came out your return flight was sometimes referred to as a flip flop and stepping on a pop top could also mean getting too drunk to function. So that line could mean getting drunk and missing your flight home and, hence, staying in Mexico all season.

The song came out in 1977. At that time, there was no such thing as Margaritaville. It was just a clever, tongue in cheek way of saying he was drunk on margaritas. The song is basically his view of what Margaritaville would be like. In the song, apparently, his woman left him of his own doings, and some people were saying it was her fault. The first chorus ends with him saying it’s nobody’s fault. Then, he goes to “It could be my fault”. Then it ends with him taking full blame with “It’s my own damn fault”. Jimmy had even had several people ask him after the song came out where Margaritaville was, and he said, “It’s anywhere you want it to be. It’s in your mind”. The Margaritaville clubs/restaurants came many years later. I’ve had their food there. It is really good. Went to the one in Panama City.

I saw Jimmy in concert 8 times, the first time with my parents and my boyfriend (who later became my husband), they introduced me to him when I was a young teenager. I lost my husband three years ago but was fortunate enough to have been able to take my kids with their significant others to his concert last summer…they grew up listening to him as well as hearing us talk about him and his concerts. What great memories we made around our tailgates and summer nights listening to Jimmy, he will be missed but always loved.
